Book Description

A Guide to Modern Econometrics explores a wide range of topics in modern econometrics focusing on what is important for doing and understanding empirical work. It serves as a guide to alternative techniques with the emphasis on practical questions such as when to use a particular approach, what can be gained by its use and what are the drawbacks. It does not concentrate on the formulae behind the approaches and their practical relevance.

4 out of 5 stars language and presentation is good.......2007-01-06

I like the book because it's among the few econometrics books that I can understand by the frist read, but as the book title says it is only a "guide", it does not include anything about survival models, which I think is an important part of modern econometrics.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Best!.......2006-11-13

I used to think that the book written by Davidson & Mackinnon (2004) is the best graduate book in econometrics. After reading this book, however, I changed my mind. This book is better for a number of reasons. First, it covers standard material (rather than non-standard one such as the geometry of OLS, artificial regressions, etc); this tailors to the need of most readers. Second, it covers OLS quickly and moves on to alternative estimators (rather than spending two chapters on hypothesis testing and confidence intervals, which is quite redundant). Third, it derives an estimator in a formal way (i.e. optimizing a particular objective function rather using the informal method of moment). Fourth, it complements econometric methods with empirical examples (rather than discussing econometric methods alone); this facilitates reader's understanding. Finally, its exposition is crystally clear (Bravo!).

One critique: An ideal graduate text should contain enough material for two semesters. However, this book is too short for two semesters but too long for one semester. So, I would suggest that he add two things. First, please expand the material on GMM and compare it to OLS as the organizing theme. Second, please add the material on bootstrap and Monte Carlo methods.

5 out of 5 stars must have it.......2003-12-17

One of the very few econometric books that are possible to read for non-mathematicians. Recommend to everyone interested in econometrics.

5 out of 5 stars Nice balance between proofs and intuition........2001-07-31

The strength of this book lies in the nice balance between mathematics and intuition. Although Wooldridge is easier to understand and better in the intuition department, he doesn't prepare you as well as Verbeek for what is yet to come: books like Econometric Analysis by Greene or Econometric Society Monographs. Verbeek uses much of the language found in scientific articles and more advanced works, without making the explanations unneccesary difficult.

If your goal is, however, not to go much deeper than introductory econometrics, then do yourself a favour and buy Introductory Econometrics by Wooldridge.

5 out of 5 stars Econometrics Explained.......2000-10-22

I'm an econ grad student - and I'm always looking for books that give me insight on econometrics. This book does precisely that! Verbeek writes econometrics like others write novels, he develops the models clearly and logically. This book should be used in graduate and undergraduate programs everywhere. It's also good for the practicing economist who wants to brush up on econometrics. It's hard to find a text that offers this much intuition and still gives a good solid mathematical treatment of the subject. I've also used the standard "kennedy" book (too simplified), the Greene's textbook - technically thorough but doesn't do much for intuitive understanding - Verbeek's book is much more readable and useful in my opinion.

      Book Description

This volume examines how employees in two manufacturing concerns perceive and perform their jobs, and how the workplace influences employees thinking. Based on extensive fieldwork, the book describes and explores the experiences of daily work. Workers are observed as they interpret instructions, and deal with often contradictory expectations and ambiguous information. The study shows that this process is far more complex than the one portrayed in discussions of skill requirements by managers, expert analysts, and many educators.
The book demonstrates that workplaces impart lessons that are at least as powerful as those conveyed in training programs and other official activities. It explores how people acquire an organizational world view that enables them to interpret the rules of the workplace and to perform appropriately. The book also examines how the new worker becomes part of a dynamic community of co-workers. Ethnographic descriptions document variations in the experiences of different workers and the strategies they adopt. The picture that emerges challenges widely held assumptions about the importance of skill requirements at work and the presumed inadequacy of ordinary people to work effectively. This book is especially timely as the nation seeks to reform education to better meet the demands of increased competition, and to address domestic concerns about preparing people for employment. A bibliography of references is included.

        4 out of 5 stars a festschrift for Bicak.......2006-12-13

The book is the festschrift of Professor Bicak. Many of the papers are on cosmology and astrophysics. Reflecting Bicak's decades-long contribution to those areas. The book also lists the many research papers he authored. Very impressive legacy.

The papers describe numerous solutions of Einstein's Field Equations. Some in the semiclassical limit. Others in the context of generating gravitational waves. The only thing lacking, if this may be said, is experimental results. That may have to wait for another generation of detectors.

This book examines the roots of the present environmental crisis in the neoclassical economics upon which modern industrial society is based. The author explains that only when we view ourselves in the larger context of the global ecosystem and accept the physical limits to what is possible can sustainability be achieved.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the ecological economics paradigm.......1999-04-26

For students wishing to get a grip ofthe ecological economics conception of the ecological-economic process, this boook is highly recommendable. Peet delivers an excellent discussion of some of the most revealing ecological economic criticisms of the conventional economics viewpoint. And most of all, this is done in a very curioussity provoking way, which off cause is a great recommodation for an introducory textbook.

For folks already familiar with the ecological economics, the book will, although apleasure to read, not yield many unfamiliar insights. But the book provides an apt taxonomy of central ideas within the field.

Lastly, a word forthe student which has already read this book, and wonders how to get deeper into the subject. For you I would strongly reccommend Nicholas Georgescu-Roegens (1971) classic "The entropy law and the economic problem," or to aslighter degree one of Herman Daly's books. Roegen's work has (as will be immediately appearent in Peets book) served as a major inspiration and pathbreaker in the development of the ecological economics. His work is, however, of a natural philosofhic content, which is NOT easily understood - but it is a true masterpeace.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic challenge to existing paradigm........1999-02-03

This book may knock your scientific socks off. It is a cogent criticism of existing scientific perspectives, especially regarding classical economic theory.

It is reasonable to assume that the environmental problems that have been created by our current economic practices are a reflection or the outcome of our current reductionist, deterministic (e.g. Newtonian) scientific paradigm. It is obvious that demonstrated success in mechanical physics is not a priori evidence that the tools are available to solve more complicated problems in natural and economic systems. (As an example, we can put a man on the moon, but why can't we feed the world?) Peet offers a new perspective -- the systems perspective -- as appropriate for the construction of new models of the natural and economic world.

It is not surprising that economic theories dating back to Adam Smith and inspired by analogies with Newtonian mechanics (what might facetiously be called "Newtonian economics") should be found inadequate in the context of the systems perspective. Simply put, human behavior does not submit to the calculus of mechanical reasoning. If one accepts Peet's arguments (which are difficult to undermine), then it becomes clear that our most urgent research need is in establishing and articulating a new paradigm of scientific reasoning that offers hope for addressing the environmental problems of the present (and presumably the next two hundred years, give or take). Peet suggests that an "ecological view" is the proper basis for a new science called Ecological Economics.

There is a wide and growing body of literature associated with Ecological Economics. Peet is only one spokesperson of the new paradigm, but he benefits from a background in chemical engineering that distinguishes his voice from those of the economists, ecologists and biologists that are also eminent in this new field. As such, the principle scientific underpinnings of his message are the laws of thermodynamics. Not the dreaded thermo endured by sophomore engineering students (e.g. heat engines and temperature-pressure diagrams), but a more accessible thermodynamics that offers a new perspective on familiar problems.

This text should be required reading in engineering graduate programs everywhere. It is increasingly more difficult to do engineering in the narrow, puzzle-solving context of the late 20th century and the broader perspective provided herein is essential for solving the problems that have been left for us by previous generations.

          Description:
Supporting the lifestyles of the populations of modern cities requires vast quantities of natural resources and leads to environmental stresses such as air and water pollution. Research into the metabolism of cities therefore aims at understanding the physical flows into, within, and out of cities with a view to reducing the use of resources and the environmental impacts. One important physical indicator is energy use. Most studies on cities only consider direct or end-user energy consumption. Since the function of cities is to serve the lives of their residents, indirect energy use in cities, or energy embodied in the consumption of goods and services by its residents, can be regarded as being as important as direct energy use. However, physical models of cities are extremely complex and have difficulty in dealing with boundary issues, and hence the indirect resource requirements. In this paper we use input-output analysis and detailed household expenditure data to yield comprehensive energy use breakdowns for the 14 Statistical Subdivisions of Sydney. Multivariate regression and structural path analysis (SPA) are used to interpret the results. Clear correlations can be drawn between energy use and income, household size, age, and degree of urbanity. The structural path analysis is used to demonstrate how significant differences in lifestyles between inner and outer areas of Sydney leads to different energy use characteristics. This final consumption-based approach to analysing the energy requirements for households has important implications for measures aimed at reducing energy use, which tend to only consider direct energy use.

            Description:
In this paper, we analyze the consequences of mass and energy conservation and the second law of thermodynamics for economic activity. In contrast to former studies, we deduce our results formally from a general model of production and consumption. We show that in a static setting for economies containing irreversible processes, a non-zero resource input as well as non-zero emissions are necessary to sustain a positive level of consumption. We generalize this result to a dynamic setting and apply it to the growth discussion and the sustainability discourse. Thereby we show that limits to growth of production and consumption are likely to exist and that the concept of weak sustainability is either morally unattractive or physically infeasible.

                Description:
The energy balance of the 1860-1870 agrarian system in a Catalan county (Spain) shows a 1.41 energy return on energy inputs. This positive figure was achieved despite the high intensive Mediterranean organic agriculture then practiced and its unavoidable dependence on the inefficient livestock bioconversion of biomass to obtain manure and traction. The key feature was the integration between agricultural, pasture and forest lands mainly by means of livestock breeding. The study of past socio-metabolic flows helps to highlight the two sides that have led to a lower energy performance of the agrarian systems in the 20th century: (1) the injection of external energy subsidies coming from fossil fuels; and (2) the functional disconnection between the different land covers inside the whole agrarian ecosystem. This disconnection has brought about a much more inefficient land use from an ecological point of view.

                  Description:
In recent years, the threat of global climate change, high fuel import dependence, and rapidly rising electricity demand levels have intensified the quest for more sustainable energy systems. This in turn has increased the need for policy makers to promote electricity generation from renewable energy sources. Guaranteed prices coupled with a buy-back obligation for electricity fed into the grid is a popular renewables promotion instrument, especially in Europe. More recently, driven mainly by electricity market liberalisation efforts, quota targets for the share of renewables in combination with tradable 'green' certificates (TGC) have received considerable attention. TGC offer a greater theoretical potential for economic efficiency gains, due to price competition and the greater flexibility assigned to the obliged parties. While guaranteed prices and TGC schemes support the operation of renewable energy technology systems, bidding schemes for renewable energy generation capacity are used to raise economic efficiency on the plant construction side. All of these policy instruments suffer from the shortcoming that they do not explicitly account for the often widely varying environmental, social and economic impacts of the technologies concerned. In this paper, we propose a methodology for the design of renewable energy policy instruments that is based on integrated assessment. In particular, we argue that using participatory multicriteria evaluation as part of the design of renewable energy promotion policies would make it possible: (1) to differentiate the level of promotion in a systematic and transparent manner according to their socio-ecological economic impact, and (2) to explicitly account for the preferences of stakeholders. A further problem of existing TGC and bidding schemes is that diversity of supply could be severely diminished, if few low-cost technologies were allowed to dominate the renewable energy market. To ensure a certain diversity of technologies, our scheme suggests the use of different technology bands for technologies that are relatively homogeneous with respect to their maturity.

                    Book Description

The quantity of fossil fuels left on the planet is limited, and their use is subject to further restrictions due to constraints on CO2 emissions. This crisis has brought to the forefront of the political agenda the need for a conversion to a sustainable society. In this compelling book, a backcasting approach based on energy flows is used to evaluate the physical constraints on sustainable development. The starting point for the backcasting approach is the definition of a desired situation at a determined point in the future. This leads to the development of scenarios that connect our present status with the desired future point. This detailed, quantitative approach gives insights into the challenges that lie ahead in order to realise our goal. The book clearly displays large sets of expectations concerning the development of future population size and wealth, technological improvements and resource quantities. These are used to discuss the overall possibility for a transition to a sustainable society and highlight the dilemma between equity and environmental quality. A selection of other energy-scenario studies using different approaches are also discussed and contrasted with the backcasting model. The book concludes with some reflections on the institutional and socio-psychological aspects of a transition to sustainability and recommends a goal-oriented policy to implement this change. Transition to a Sustainable Society will prove essential reading for those with an interest in ecological economics, energy and environmental policy makers, and research planners.

                      Description:
The extended exergy analysis method, taking into account the mean life time cycle of building, has been applied to evaluate the sustainability of an urban area. The impact of the emissions due to the life cycle of the buildings has been evaluated. Two thermodynamic indexes, @h"I and @h"I"I showing, respectively, the first and second law efficiency of buildings, have been proposed as thermodynamic indexes. The applied methodology provides a single thermodynamics environmental criterion for the selection of technological alternatives, strategies and designs that produce lower environmental impacts connected to higher exergy indexes @h"I"I.

4 out of 5 stars Bias - Shorin Ryu Marketing.......2007-08-05

Although we have to admit that Mr. Bishop put a lot of research on the history of the Birthplace and Development of Karate, there is too much of his opinions imprinted on the writing style... all in favor of the several branches of Shorin Ryu and at a certain point minimizing the importance of the other Okinawan Karate Koryu... Further more on his excerpt titled Goju and Health, Mr. Bishop presents an irresponsible and highly biased personal opinion disguised as a "medical proven fact" of the alleged health effects caused by Sanchin Kata (Three Battles Form). Reality has it that Mr. Bishop is not a health licensed professional and according to my research there has never been a scientific study performed or any type of medical lead investigation that supports his misguided and fantastic allegations about the Danger of the Practices included in Goju Ryu Karate Do... He goes to the length to even propose that Goju Teachers die at an early age, this cannot be further from the truth, e.g., Yagi Meitoku Dai Sensei founder of Meibukan Goju Ryu and Successor of Miyagi Chujun O'Sensei founder of Goju Ryu Karate Do, died at age 91, and reportedly, practiced Sanchin Kata until the dawn of his days (1912-2003)... The book relays interesting information to include apparent gossips of the Okinawan Karate Koryu, and excellent tables of lineage... Certainly NOT a technical book and NOT for beginners. Otherwise recomended as a good source of record of Okinawan Karate Teacher-Student Lineage and Geneolocial Tree... Juan Javier Adames / USA - Philippines

4 out of 5 stars Unfortunately does not show Kanji / Chinese characters.......2007-01-10

Okinawan Karate, and its history tends to be contradictory, or ambiguous depending on who does the telling, and how long the "telephone game" was. Bishop's english language book adds to that history as he saw it. What's missing are Kanji / Chinese characters for the various people, locations, and styles. Kanji have multiple pronuciations (i.e. Japanese is a language full of homonyms). Since this book is in part intended to perserve Okinawan history it would be considerably more useful to have the correct words.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Reference.......2007-01-10

For those who study the Okinawan martial arts, this is an excellent historical review of the origins of these arts. While a bit "dry" in places for those who might not understand the historical significance of many of the founders, Mark Bishop does a great job in preserving the heritage of the Okinawan arts, and shares insights into the lives of its origniators. Many of these founders are overlooked in other publications, this is a "must-read" for those who want to know the true history of the Okinawan martial arts.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-08-28

In this book, Bishop tries to show all the branches in Okinawan Karate-do. It details the well known stiles, interviews with the responsible masters and so on. It also includes valuable information on some rare styles. But if you are looking for the "secret techniques" they are not here, of course (try training with your Master for 20 years ;-) ). Very good and recommendable book!

5 out of 5 stars A major reference on Okinawan Karate.......2006-08-26

An universally acclaimed book. A real reference praised by all martial arts scholars and experts including the same karate masters it faithfully depicts! Includes a specially accurate and complete rendering of the Nahate (Goju-Ryu) line which sadly has been lately distorted by some very successfull "reference" books for individual promoting purposes.
This book should be present in every serious martial artist's bookshelf.

The price to value ratio is poor. The content of this tiny booklet is available on the internet for free while the layout and press quality are amateurish at best.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Handbook.......2006-06-13

The FMEA Pocket Handbook is an excellent pocket handbook that is easy to understand and is straight to the point. Despite its small size, it is packed with useful information, concepts and ideas required to employ FMEA. This is a valuable and treasured addition to my library.

This is a well organized handbook that contains the essential elements of what one needs to know and understand about FMEA. It is a fantastic quick reference guide that has the beauty of being small, thereby enabling us to carry it anywhere. It is like a friend that is always there for you in times of need.

This pocket handbook compliments the other Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) information that I have been able to locate. The handbook contains definitions, types of FMEA, Basic concepts and tools, a FMEA process outline, prerequisites and preparations, the process in detail (flow charts), corrective action, forms/tables, and examples, all in a 40 page pocket sized handbook. Very useful for the working logistician.

This little book will get you as far down the road as most of the 1000 page books on the market. Actually farther, since you will either never get through the 1000 pages or, if you do, you will never remember what they said. You can trust me on this point, I've tried. It covers all the basics in a well organized manner and makes a good quick reference.
