Book Description
Most Anglo-American readers know Bataille as a novelist. The Accursed Share provides an excellent introduction to Bataille the philosopher. Here he uses his unique economic theory as the basis for an incisive inquiry into the very nature of civilization. Unlike conventional economic models based on notions of scarcity, Bataille's theory develops the concept of excess: a civilization, he argues, reveals its order most clearly in the treatment of its surplus energy. The result is a brilliant blend of ethics, aesthetics, and cultural anthropology that challenges both mainstream economics and ethnology.
Customer Reviews:
a work of genius.......2000-07-31
Read both books that contain all three volumes: in a way, the summation of Bataille's thoughts and written with clarity. It's not just the consumption-expenditure approach to analysing human activity that's orginial, he is (as he states towards the end of vol. 3) the closest thinker to Nietzsche. That is an assertion that bears merit as Bataille examines in as thorough a way possible (and in many ways supplements and is a good commentary on) Nietzsche's ideas of the overman, which he calls the sovereign man. At the core of his thoughts is Hamlet's last line, 'The rest is silence'. Sovereignty is NOTHING. A brilliant and vital contribution to the century's history of ideas.
A thought provoking work connecting religion and economics........1998-03-07
In this book, Georges Bataille explores the connection between man's religious and economic pursuits. By focusing in on such divergent practices as human sacrifice and ritualized warfare in Aztec society, the practice of "potlach" in native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest, Tibetan Lamaism, and the conflagrations of our most recent World Wars, the author seeks to overturn classical models of economics. Instead of economics being driven by individuals seeking to satisfy their personal needs, Bataille proposes that economics is actually a social process that seeks to destroy, excrete, and expend excess goods and services. His unique perspective centers around the idea that the systematic destruction and loss of goods and services is intimately connected to our age old struggle to attain the Beyond. The French philosopher Michel Foucault once stated that Bataille said what had never been said before. After reading this first volume of Bataille's three volume work "The Accursed Share", you can begin to understand why Foucault believed as he did.

Book Description
Undesirable invasive plants are infesting public and private lands and waterways in this country at an alarming rate. Various methods are used to suppress these nonnative weeds, from herbicides to burning to cultivation. Classical biological control-in which selected host-specific, plant-attacking insects, mites, nematodes, and pathogens are introduced from the invasive plant's native lands-provides an additional tool for land managers.
In this book, leading experts review the discipline of biological control of invasive terrestrial and aquatic plants. Topics addressed include ecology, safety testing, nontarget impacts, and the processes of identifying, introducing, distributing, and monitoring biological control agents.
This book also provides information about 39 target plants in the continental United States and 94 agents, including their origin, biology, habitat, impacts, and distribution. The book concludes with information about invasive plants targeted for biological control in the future.
An invaluable reference for land managers, natural resource and weed control specialists, and students of natural resource management, "Biological Control of Invasive Plants in the United States" provides practical, science-based information needed for understanding and using biological control as part of an integrated invasive-plant management strategy.

Book Description
This is the first in the two-book series covering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Offered are descriptions of nearly 200 miles along the Canadian border and over 1200 miles of canoe routes through some of the most beautiful country in the world. This book describes several routes from each of 28 entry points, covering distance, portages, difficulty, and Fisher maps needed. This volume comes with a 4-color foldout map of the region covered.
Customer Reviews:
Not for the weak.......2006-05-05
As we read the descriptions of "Easier" and "Challenging" routes we realized that Beymer lives at a higher physical level than we do. The information is well-presented and useful, but it would have been nice to find some routes appropriate to our out-of-shape adults and younger kids preferences
Useful and Inspiring, Despite Instant Obsolescence.......2006-02-12
The Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota (BWCAW) -- 100 million acres of pristine lakes interconnected by overland portages and streams -- is the closest place to heaven I've seen on this earth. Journeying through it in a canoe, one is struck by its "cumulative grandeur" as a friend described it to me.
Many uninitiated visitors from out of state just arrive in Ely, get outfitted, and head out with little advance preparation. Most of them live, but this is not the way to experience the Boundary Waters. Along with books on the specifics of canoe tripping and camping, and back country cooking, you will want to research possible canoe routes in this indispensable book and its pendant, volume 2 on the eastern region. If you're planning a trip, keep in mind that trips out of Ely generally fall in the western region, trips out of Gunflint fall in the eastern region, but a single trip can easily wind through both regions.
This book provides specific routes that can be followed exactly or used as an outline for a trip you customize. Each itinerary gives helpful general information: suggested trip length; miles per day; number of lakes and rivers; and number of portages (overland routes between lakes); and difficulty level. It also tells you which Fischer maps will cover the trip ... but I prefer the McKenzie maps myself. Then comes a full description of what you can expect to encounter on the trip, highlights along the way, tips for avoiding pitfalls, etc. If you're new to this kind of wilderness experience, you should read several itineraries -- even ones you don't plan to follow -- to get a feel for the terrain. If you're a BWCAW veteran, then reading these itineraries will fuel your daydreams! (You may even learn something to make your next trip go more smoothly.)
The book also includes general information on planning your trip: BWCAW reservations and regulations, advice to trip planning, an introduction to the ecosystem and its attractions and dangers, recommendations for camping guides and other references.
A couple of caveats. When the blowdown of July 4, 1999, that leveled 1/3 of the trees in the BWCAW hit ... this book was just going to press -- a fact that is acknowledged in the Preface. Recovery of this vast ecosystem will take a century or more, and the landscape has been altered forever. Therefore, to a certain extent this book was obsolete before it was even published. Needless to say, not all descriptions and photos represent what you are likely to find in the hardest-hit areas -- although lakeshores, with more windfast trees, are in many places the only trees still standing, extending a curtain between the paddler and the devastation inland.
The other caveat, which should be needless, is that even if you have mapped out a specific route, you must be prepared to alter it in case of weather, low water in streams, or other unexpected occurrences. Be alert and adaptable.
The definitive guide for outdoor enthusiasts.......2001-02-16
Now in a thoroughly updated and revised sixth edition, Boundary Waters Canoe Area: Western Region continues to be the definitive guide for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to enjoy a land of beautiful landscapes and wildlife. Veteran travel writer and outdoorsman Robert Beymer provides details on 27 entry points in the western part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and includes important information on the length of time needed to complete each trip, distances and difficulty of each trip, number of lakes, rivers and portages encountered; and the maps required. Boundary Waters Canoe Area: Western Region is enhanced with a four-color pullout map and is a "must" for canoeists, anglers, vacationers, and hunters seeking to enjoy what this unique and remarkable country have to offer.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area - Vol. 1 The Western Region.......2000-08-24
This is a great book to start your plans for a trip into the Boundary Waters. There are suggested routes for every entry point in the western region and whether you use the suggested route or not it's a great place to start!
A "Must Have" for planning your next BWCA trip.......2000-08-22
I have canoe camped in the BWCA since 1971 and have found previous editions of this guide essential for my trip planning. This well-written, newly-revised edition is even better. It contains the latest information on obtaining a permit for entry into the area as well as general information regarding the destructive storm that swept through the BWCA on July 4, 1999. The 2000 edition is slightly larger in size and with bigger print is easier to read. It is also about 70 pages longer than the previous book. The author has changed the format of the route numbers to better correspond to the entry points, making it easier to relate the two. There are updated photos throughout the book and some route recommendations have been changed. This edition is full of information to make your trip planning into the western region of the BWCA easy. It allows you to choose routes based on your physical ability (easy to rugged), fishing desires (it lists type of fish in 185 western region lakes), scenery (waterfalls, pictographs), time constraints (suggested routes for over 50 2-8 day trips), etc. It tells you how to reach each entry point and one of my favorite statistics, the popularity rank of each entry point (I like to find solitude as quickly as possible). This is trip planning guide, and does not provide detailed camping "how to" information, although the author refers you to reliable books on this subject. I recommend it and am planning to purchase the revised eastern region edition as soon as it is available.

Customer Reviews:
does the job.......2007-09-03
This review is of the paperback edition which I assume is the same as the hardcover. I've worked through this book twice using it, as intended, as a self study guide. It works reasonably well and is agreeably free of Idiot Guide annoyances ('takin it for a walk!', adolescent jokes, etc). The approach is conventional with readings, vocabulary lists, grammar sections (in quite bite sized pieces), many excercises and drills and (essential for a self study guide), three review sections and a complete answer key for all exercises. If you work through it in a systmatic way you should get to about the equivalent of a university level It 101. You'll have reviewed all essential grammar and will have a vocabulary of about 600 words. There are however some problems. There is no index so looking up something you've already covered involves a lot of flipping. The grammatical discussions are a little brief in places and a supplementary reference grammar is recommended - but you should have one anyway. Finally, the book is marred by frequent typos, often poor layout of tables and vocabularies, inconsistent conventions and general signs of a lack of editing that is surprising from a major publisher - Wiley for the paperback. These are annoying rather than fatal and since no one else has mentioned them, maybe I'm just a little obsessive.
Easy guide to learning Italian.......2007-04-11
If you want to learn more than just conversational italian, this is the book. I would also purchase an Italian/American dictionary for referance.
Really easy to uinderstand.
Great way to learn Italian!.......2007-01-10
This is a great educational book with lots of problems and dialogue to learn Italian.
Excellent Self-Learning Guide.......2006-08-19
This is a no-nonsense approach to learning Italian. I read the book three times, and did the exercises three times. Each time it was easier, and I understood more. I was able to enter an Italian 2 class, and even had a bit of an edge from working so much with this book. I still will go over some of my "problem spots", and also I use it as a reference. Now I'm ready to tackle Italian 3. I don't know of any other book that is so thorough on the market today. Bravo Professore Lebano!
THE BEST WAY TO LEARN ITALIAN.......2004-03-28
This book is fantastic. I am currently learning Spanish in school and thought of the idea of learning Italian also. When I went to the bookstore and picked up this book by Edoardo A. Lebano I struck gold. It was extremley informative with great examples and excercises and it covers all the basic to advanced grammar and vocabulary. If you are considering learning Italian this is the book. It is not extremley quick to get done, ( about a month of constant work or two) but when you finish the book you actually know the basis to intermediate of the Italian language. It helps to have some idea of spanish or french or latin just for it to be easier to understand the grammer, which helped me because they are so close. Even if you don't have that, this book is so clear that it is not that big of an advantage to know another romance language. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ITALIAN LOOK NO FARTHER THIS IS THE BOOK.

Vivacious and sparkling! Very highly recommended.......2002-01-21
Reporter Chelsea Brockway is a skeptical that a skirt can become a man-magnet, despite her best friend's claims. But when she catches the skirt, in lieu of the bridal bouquet, at her friend's wedding, Chelsea sees it as an opportunity to further her career. She spins several fun articles around the man-magnet skirt, three of which capture the eye of an editor at Metropolitan magazine.
Chelsea's plans come to a screeching halt, however, when Zach McDaniel takes over the helm of Metropolitan, planning to steer the magazine away from sensationalism in an effort to attract a highbrow audience. Although he intends sweeping changes in the magazine, he finds himself drawn into the skirt's allure. Chelsea persuades him to take a bet: If she can convince him of the skirt's allure, he'll print her article. If she can't, she'll walk away from the contract without pay. Zach accepts, figuring he can't loose.
Cara Summers' vivacious voice sparkles in MOONSTRUCK IN MANHATTAN. Her skillful manipulation of humor, implausibility, and love result in novel that is both smoothly sensual, and excitingly fabulous. Indeed, this unexpectedly thrilling plot combines with a sizzling romance guaranteed to add heat to the season's cold winter nights. Once again Summers demonstrates her mastery of the written word, making MOONSTRUCK IN MANHATTAN come very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Unmistakably Exciting!.......2000-10-10
If you've read any other Cooper Ellis books, you'll be familiar with Wendy Lee Nentwig's incredible talent for writing. Cooper and her friends Alex and Claire are back, along with Josh, Cooper's boyfriend hopeful. While Josh seems, at times, genuinely interested in Cooper, why does he appear to continually be hiding something from Cooper and mysteriously running off somewhere else? And then there's the pretty little redhead Reagan Josh keeps showing up with, even though he's just asked Cooper to the spring dance. At the same time, Cooper's modelling career is flourishing, with getting a job with a hot new photographer. But though his work is very professional, Cooper's just not comfortable around him. Meanwhile, between Cooper's modelling and her struggle to define her relationship with Josh, her friendships with Alex and Claire seem to quickly be drifting away. In this funny episode with Cooper, you'll experience a lot of laughs and a few times of seriousness and contemplation. It's easy to get into this book and hard to put down! Believe me, it doesn't take long before you feel like you're right there. If you liked Cooper before, you'll love her now. Check out Moonstruck in Manhattan!
