Book Description
In An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory Paul A. Ruud shows the practical value of an intuitive approach to econometrics. Students learn not only why but how things work. Through geometry, seemingly distinct ideas are presented as the result of one common principle, making econometrics more than mere recipes or special tricks. In doing this, the author relies on such concepts as the linear vector space, orthogonality, and distance. Parts I and II introduce the ordinary least squares fitting method and the classical linear regression model, separately rather than simultaneously as in other texts. Part III contains generalizations of the classical linear regression model and Part IV develops the latent variable models that distinguish econometrics from statistics. To motivate formal results in a chapter, the author begins with substantive empirical examples. Main results are followed by illustrative special cases; technical proofs appear toward the end of each chapter. Intended for a graduate audience, An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory fills the gap between introductory and more advanced texts. It is the most conceptually complete text for graduate econometrics courses and will play a vital role in graduate instruction.

Another excellent econometric textbook.......2007-07-23
This is another good, modern textbook on parametric, cross-sectional econometrics (don't look for non/semi-parametric or time-series econometrics in here). It is, I think, in the same league as Wooldridge, which is however less technical and spends more time describing empirical applications. I think Ruud is a very nice addition to an econometric shelf. The notation is good, and the math/stat appendix is one of the best I have ever seen (the section on multivariate differentiation in particular is outstanding and very useful). Overall, if you want to have 3 *relatively* basic books on parametric cross-section econometrics, I think this is a good companion to Wooldridge and Cameron and Trivedi (a nice compendium of applied tools, which also includes some non-parametrics, for which the best introduction is likely Pagan and Ullah). If time-series is important to you, Hayashi is a good choice. As you may have guessed, I am not a big fan of Greene, which I do own but never look at.
nice.......2006-02-04
here we have just another big graduate textbook. the style reminds me of simon/blume (brrrr): a lot of material, reader likes it, solves the excercises (ahh I'm doing econometrics) and is left without a clue. at least for me ;) I think most of the 1000 pages is quite useless. too many distracting pictures and the proofs are either 'technical' (i.e. boring and dispensable) or very intuitive. most of the details you forget anyway. hopefully, since i find all the padding very confusing. don't get me wrong, intuition is very good but the term is short and the next one is probably harder => buy a maths book instead!
The book is OK, but not good really.......2001-09-01
I gave it a one-star to balance those biased 5 stars. The first part of the book is pretty good, intuitively explains what an OLS regression is really like geometrically. The second part of the book is just horrible. The author just goes on and on and on without being able to clearly explain the theories. The book is used in my program for one year and then stopped. Now we use Yamashi's book, which is much better.
Simply the Best.......2001-01-19
I have just completed reading Professor Ruud's textbook from cover to cover. It is the clearest, most insightful graduate-level econometrics book I have read. Whereas many texts seem to be compendiums of theorems and proofs with little in the way of explanation, Ruud takes the time to explain things thoroughly. At over 800 pages, however, Ruud's book is never verbose. A good explanation takes time, but Ruud never takes more time than is needed. Yet, in addition to all concepts being thoroughly explained, they are introduced with practical examples, and--what is most amazing--the proofs are built up systematically in such a way that you can actually read though them and be enlightened rather than convinced.
Previous econometrics texts have a "Losing sight of the forest for the trees" sort of feel to them. Ruud's text, however, works like the old drill Seargent in the Kipling poem who explained his teaching method as "Firsts I tells 'em what I'ms goings to tells em; then I tells 'em; and then I tells 'em what's I tolds 'em." Ruud does this by first building up the fundamental concept of matrix projection. Then he demonstrates how that can be used to explain Ordinary Least Squares regression. Then he adds onto that all the common assumptions: independent, identically distributed errors; normality of the errors, etc. He builds things up one assumption at a time. And all the while he tells you what he's doing and why the content of each chapter matters and how it is related to what has come before and to what will come afterwards.
But, then--in a master stroke of pedagogy--he tears it all down. He starts taking away, one at a time, all the assumptions like normality that he just spent chapters building up and shows how econometricians deal with matters when they *do* in fact remove the standard assumptions. In this way he can introduce consistent estimators, non-linear regression, latent variables, and so on as what they were historically: practical solutions needed when the assumptions of the classical model fail to hold.
By systematically showing which assumptions imply which results and then showing how to deal with things when a given assumption fails to hold, Ruud's book produces a better econometrician. Too often have previous books left previous readers unable to really understand the art of data analysis, which involves taking a data set, seeing what assumptions can be fairly made about it, and then analyzing it given those fairly made assumptions.
Professor Ruud deserves many plaudits for writing what will surely become the standard text for the next generation of graduate students.
Econometrics finally makes sense!.......2001-01-13
Econometrics seemed to me a technically demanding subject with results that are either magic (stated without derivation) or based on some arcane mathematical tricks. But after reading Ruud's textbook, econometrics finally makes sense. It provides a great exposition of graduate econometrics with all the main results and techniques clearly spelled out. Furthermore, it actually has derivations of the results. I also really like the emphasis on the geometry behind econometrics; it provides a systematic approach and the results even become intuitive.
So, if you want more than just a recipe book and actually understand econometrics, read this book!

Book Description
Employers need to protect themselves from workers whose behavior damages the company. Does that give them the right to conduct random drug tests, read employees' e-mail, search desk drawers, and monitor off-the-job activities?
Workplace privacy issues are complex -- many employers are confused about their legal and ethical rights. The New Battle Over Workplace Privacy provides critical information to help companies create appropriate policies and practices. Through case examples, highlights of state and federal laws, checklists, and sample policies, this book shows a company how to:
* protect itself from employee theft, substance abuse, and other misconduct
* stay within legal bounds by learning what laws are (and aren't) in place
* avoid litigation -- and win the cases that do go to court.

Be prepared!.......2006-02-16
Employers and managers today face an increasing number of threats to the organization. Theft of business assets costs U.S. companies an estimated $40 billion a year. More than one million employees a year are victims of workplace violence. Employees who download games from the internet increase the risk of introducing viruses to company computer systems and expose their employers to charges of software piracy. However, measures that employer's have taken to address these issues, like workplace surveillance and performance monitoring, have sparked a violent debate, and several lawsuits claiming invasion of privacy, sexual harassment and discrimination. Your best defense, says William S. Hubbartt, is to be prepared. He presents guidelines for helping you to avoid battles over workplace privacy and examines some of the laws that protect employees' rights.
· Develop policies that will stand up in court. The best way to avoid lawsuits is to clearly spell out the policies that the company will use to handle privacy issues like testing, conduct and performance monitoring. Before you draft your policies, make sure you are aware of federal and state laws that apply.
· When screening job applicants, relate all questions and checks to the job.
· Protect computerized records containing information about employees.
· Develop tests that fairly evaluate employee's work attributes.
· If you use drug testing, notify applicants and employees that they will be tested. Utilize procedures that allow them as much privacy and dignity as possible.
· Have a clear business justification for formal dress codes, such as public image, security or safety. Apply dress codes equally to men and women. Communicate the purpose of the dress code to employees.
· Banning solicitation at the workplace must apply to everyone, from girl scout cookies to distributing religious literature.
· Respect your employees lifestyle choices.
· Investigate if the problem is serious.
· Use monitoring to check routine issues.

Book Description
Understanding the factors affecting crop yields is crucial in our efforts to provide food for the growing human population. This book examines grain crop yields from a new and unique perspective, by concentrating on the influence of seed growth and its regulation. It examines all aspects of seed growth and development, including environmental and genetic effects on growth rate and length of filling period. It discusses the effect of the seed on the two main yield components, individual seed weight and number of seeds per unit area, and evaluates the concepts and models developed in terms of crop management.

Book Description
Astronomy Across Cultures: A History of Non-Western Astronomy consists of essays dealing with the astronomical knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Polynesian, Egyptian and Tibetan astronomy, among others, the book includes essays on Sky Tales and Why We Tell Them and Astronomy and Prehistory, and Astronomy and Astrology. The essays address the connections between science and culture and relate astronomical practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay is well illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both the history of science and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Useful Sourcebook.......2001-02-14
This book has wide-ranging essays on the astronomies of the ancient world (other than Greek and Mesopotamian which are traditionally taken to be the forerunners of Western astronomy). The book is steeply priced, but it is worth it.
Book Description
Other than the Brooks Range in Alaska, the Uintas are the most prominent east/west range in the United States. They also contain the highest mountains in Utah, many of which exceed 13,000 feet, including Kings Peak at 13,528 feet -- the highest point in Utah. There are well over 1,000 natural lakes and over 400 miles of streams in this 100-mile long range in northeastern Utah. While the intended scope of this book is fairly broad, the author presents the geologic story of the Uinta Mountains with a clarity and wit that gives this book a unique and popular appeal.

Customer Reviews:
This is a total scam.......2006-12-12
As a trained acupuncturist who has practiced martial arts since 1982 it is my humble opinion that this is a fraudulent book, as is the other vol. It will be obvious to any acupuncturist that Mr. Montaigue, with the aid of a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practitioner (Simpson), simply made use of TCM texts and reversed the application of energetically active points to suit "his" Dim Mak model. Anyone who has been in a real fight will not harbor an illusion that they can make use of minute accupoints to defeat an opponent. This is pure fiction and displays a total lack of understanding of Qi energetics. I don't dispute that Dim Mak once existed, but those capable of using it are people who were raised in temples where life revolved around simultaneous medical & martial training for many years; an existence most westerners cannot really understand. So Earl who bounced around from place to place and one thing to another does not even remotely fit this model. In his bio, he dedicates 1-single line mentioning his "main internal martial arts master", and makes no mention of being granted a rank of sifu or receiving a place in the lineage from this "master". So what great knowledge was really passed to him?
Ask yourself logically: How does Earl know the effects of striking all 360 + accupoints? Has he hit that many people and studied the effects? Did one of those old Chinese teachers he brags about give him such complete details? Or is it that he is just giving you the TCM obvious, like ST9? It does not take rocket science to know that striking a point where the vagus nerve & carotid artery are close will produce a negative effect. In fact, every true martial art is aware of such targets.
While Dim Mak makes perfect sense to me in theory, I am under no illusion that it is something I will ever perform in my lifetime. I have studied with, met, and observed many Chinese "masters", and I have yet to encounter a single one who has such command of their Qi. Unless you have lived like a monk uninterrupted for some 20-years under expert guidance, it is simply not realistic in this age.
The application of real Dim Mak is beyond any of us today. It is the equivalent of performing acupuncture treatments without using needles, but under combat stress. If you believe Earl is some high Qi master, then this book may be for you.
More likely, your martial path will be significantly enhanced by studying the legitimate positive effects of these points through a TCM text book. After learning to heal yourself you can consider healing others. Earl's "Dim Mak" would have you take that in reverse. Focusing your Qi to harm others, or even just entertaining the thought is a dangerous act that has no place in daily training and should only be reserved for life-threatening situations.
GET IT! .......2006-06-16
I cannot recommend this book highly enough - for both practitioners of the internal arts and the healing arts. I've had both volumes for years and am still regularly using them for cross-referencing, research and study. Lucky enough to have been instructed by Erle, I can assure you he is a true master in every sense of the word and the information in these volumes are worth gold.
A great addition to his other works.......2005-02-12
Mr. Montaique has expanded on his other masterpiece, and well done I might add. This is the follow on to his other encyclopedia and a must have to complete the collection.

REQUIRED READING !!.......2002-07-13
erle montaigue just never seems to go wrong! this book is greatly written on not only point locations, effects, applications, multiple strikes, etc. but also has an added bonus on qigong (internal) training. also shows how to discover which points are most idealy for one to study by explaining how to learn the way which YOU already naturaly react. great learning tool to add to ones training. even includes his very personal fav. points in which he trains with. great companion to the fisrt volume! highly recomended reading!!
One of two required DIM MAK books.......2000-11-20
Mr. Montaigue's companion volume to the Dim Mak encyclopedia is a welcome addition to his outstanding series of Dim Mak titles. This book covers point strikes to the extraordinary meridians (covered in TCM theory), as well as additional information concerning the medical effects of point strikes to the human body. This book along with its companion "The Encyclopedia of Dim Mak" are excellent reference material for those wishing to learn more about both the damage and healing which this art can be used for.

Positively Implementing Change.......2006-08-31
This book is helpful in learning to frame questions that help to effect positive change. Most people are more willing to accept answers that they discover for themselves. And of course, no one will make any real change unless they want to. The best you can get with force is outward conformity, and you will only get it to the degree that employees feel they "must" go along with. It takes a lot less energy to help people find their own internal motivation than it does to push or drag them along.
Great Companion to The 7 Powers of Questions.......2006-03-04
This is a great companion to Leeds earlier book--7 Powers of Questions. There's some great practical tips here that will help you work smart, have greater interpersonal influence, and avoid shooting yourself in the foot.

Questions Rule.......2004-12-12
I am in Consulting and I convert most of my statements to questions; and boy, it works. First few chapters of this book are essential to your business communications.
For any manager who wants to be a great coach.......2003-08-28
As a professional personal coach who works one-on-one to help others reach greater success, I really appreciate the approach of this book. "Smart Questions" is for anyone who doesn't realize that good coaching isn't about advising. This book shows you why asking the right question is much more powerful than giving an answer or advice, especially advice that someone isn't necessarily looking for. The essence of great coaching is all about asking smart questions. The best answers almost always come from whomever you're helping, not you.
This is the smart choice in this category!.......2000-06-28
The 'smart question' to ask is "Why am I looking at these types of books?" If the answer is to improve your ability to get more out of your meetings, interviews, negotiations, and communications with everyone at any level (internal and external to your organization), this is the book to buy by far. I've read many self-help communications books and this one really gets to the heart of the matter -- ask and you shall receive; ask the right question(s) and you'll get what you want/deserve. It was an easy and enjoyable read that gets you engaged from the first chapter (unlike so many other books that take 5 chapters to explain what they're to accomplish). The quizzes really provide helpful and immediate feedback. You can read from cover to cover or use as a reference. Either way, this book gives you tools to use right away. You'll carry this one around with you until you've mastered the technique.
You won't be disappointed (as I have with so many other books of this kind). This one is a winner, hands down!

Captivating.......2005-03-07
It's not easy being fifteen and living on the streets of New York. It's especially not easy when you have a little girl to take care of too. Chan thinks she has it made until young Elizabeth wanders into her life. Chan instantly takes Elizabeth under her wing, protecting her as if she was her own child. The two develop a bond like no other, relying on each other for everything, but what happens when you start to grow up? What happens when you fall in love? What happens when it is time to let go? Is there bond truly strong enough to last forever? This page turner will keep you up all night long pondering love, family, and life. This is truly a book you do not want to miss.
Really great!.......2005-03-05
Although some parts of Tomorrow, Maybe are a little bit weird, it is a totally great book. it tells of a girl that ran away from home and meets elizabeth a 11 year old runaway. she learns to care for her. It's a touching book that almost made me bawl at the end! i recomend it to anyone.
a must read!.......2004-01-09
This captivating novel developes the story of one girls journey as she roams the streets of New York. Chan has been on the streets for several years with no one to depend on but herself. When she meets a younger girl, Elizabeth, she decides to take her in and care for her. Elizabeth helps Chan realize that life wasn't meant to be this way, that children shouldn't be on the streets. This causes Chan to make a plan of action, to get out of New York or merely to leave the life that she and Elizabeth are leading. This is a book you won't want to put down!
A Story That You Will Never Forget.......2003-07-08
This story is about a girl named Chan who is 15 and has been homeless for 2 years after running away from home. She is always moving around from place to place. Staying with people she doesn't know if she can trust. Until she meets 11 year old Elizabeth, another run away girl who she cares for more than anything. This story is about their adventure as a team, through the rough streets of New York. I loved this book because it truly made me fall in love with the character. I loved how the plot was well planned and there was always something new and exciting coming into Chan's world.

famous knowledge about Aboriginies.......2003-02-12
I bought that book in Australia. Monty Prior wrote his life and the hole culture of this spectacular people within 180 pages. It's a resumée of everything about this culture, we never had the chance to learn about. Just great. It's a must to have for every open human beeing. Greetings from Switzerland. Peter
A real believer.......2000-12-04
Maybe Tomorrow was a fabulous book. I was into Boori magnificent tale right away. I was about to say i feel his passion, but i could never feel the amount of passion that Boori has, and spreads throught the Australian land. I knew ther were many problems with Aborigonals in Australia, but never quite so bad. I thought people just didn't have any real respect for them. which made it hard fort them to get on in life. But i never knew of any of the harsh treatments they go through. Especially abuse from Police. The way he lived his life, and told his stories made me want to read on. I'm also into Djing and Basketball like Boori which caught my attention more. The other day I was thinking how great it would be to go and visit this man and his family in the Bush. I come from the same area as him too. I would love to see the way the traditional Aborigonals go through their days, preferably without hassle of 'white Australians.' Overall, definately an insperational book, and a must read for many people. Humerous, yet serious problems in life. Well done Boori(Monty)Pryor!
A peak into the Aboriginal mentality.......2000-07-12
Boori Monty Pryor's "Maybe Tomorrow" is a delightful, thought-provoking book, full of insightful stories (both humoristic and tragic) about Aboriginal and non-Aboriginals' interactions in Australia. It is easy reading, told in a vivid, story-telling language, and the stories mostly revolve around Boori's experiences with school children, when he talks to them about his Aboriginal culture, traditions, the Aboriginal situation today, etc. "Maybe Tomorrow" brings up a lot of prejudices that many non-Aboriginals unfortunately have against Aboriginals. Boori gives his side of the story in a neat, creative, non-bitter, and understandable fashion.
I would definitely recommend "Maybe Tomorrow". It gives you a great picture of Aboriginal culture, traditions, mentality, etc. It also helps give this amazing people the respect and appreciation, they so much deserve. In addition, I think that Boori's messages not only apply to Australian Aboriginals, but may also give an idea as to why other indigenous peoples across the planet live the way they do, in their attempt to adapt to non-indigenous (or white) society.
Customer Reviews:
Silly and over-written, but it has a glow.......2002-11-03
I was not especially surprised to find out that A Golden Circle is out of print. The writing is too exuberant for the events in the plot; the characters speak in language too elevated and gushing to be convincing; the plot is simple and predictable. However. There is beauty in this book. It glows with a larger-than-life vibrancy that may irritate you or make you smile; it infectiously sings the praises of musical theater. Don't make a huge effort to track it down--I'm sure better stories of the stage and screen abound. But if it's a rainy day, and if you come across A Golden Circle in a used-book sale as I did, it may make your day shine.
