Book Description

From Tijuana to Tierra del Fuego, Latin America is remarkably misunderstood, often viewed merely as a source of cheap labor, where corrupt politicians and drug lords run rampant. As a result, many--especially smaller--U.S. businesses are missing out on lucrative opportunities to expand their operations into this dynamic region, home to over 500 million consumers. Drawing from over 30 years of firsthand experience and research, Dr. Thomas Becker helps readers overcome these stereotypes and presents a concise and authoritative approach to conducting business in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America. Featuring current economic, geographic, and demographic data, illustrative case examples, and scores of practical tips, the book delivers a wealth of insights for understanding market conditions, assessing competitive opportunities, and negotiating successful deals. Chapters on the history and culture of Latin America explain the context for how business relationships are established and sustained, and illustrate the profound changes that are positioning the region for renewed growth--particularly for small- and medium-sized U.S. businesses. Subsequent chapters cover the details of business practices--from choosing distribution partners and managing logistics to conducting yourself in meetings and trade shows to getting paid and protecting intellectual property. Integrating strategy and tactics, the author shows you how to separate fact from fiction and earn a passport to profit in a region that is breaking with its past.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-02-18

A very interesting, well-written book. It covers both the current status of business and business needs in latin america and also the cultural aspects of doing business there. Most books cover one topic or the other. This one blends both into a good read. Gives good, practical tips on negotiation techniques, dealing with the government bureaucracy, impression mangement, marketing to latin american consumers and business leaders, etc. Makes you think of dealing with the latin american market from a whole new perspective. Buy it if you are thinking about doing business in latin america or even if you are already there.

5 out of 5 stars Small USA based business exploring Latin America for opportunity.......2006-01-03

Thanks to Dr. Becker for explaining in practical and action oriented detail the growth opportunities in Latin America for my small USA based company. After stumbling onto our first Mexican client, my team and I thought we better learn more about how Latin American business operates. Becker clearly highlights the economic and cultural factors that shape doing business in the region, as well as provides many "real-world" tips on how to spot opportunities, avoid pitfalls, and develop long term, profitable customers.

An excellent book that provides current market intelligence on Latin America in an easy-to-read form.

5 out of 5 stars Must read. Must re-read. Must recommend to others........2005-02-01

I highly recommend this book for anyone doing business in Latin America.

I recently expanded my business into Central and South America and was desperately in need of education regarding the business practices and social customs of these new markets. I am usually more critical in my reviews, but Doing Business in the New Latin America exceeded my expectations tenfold, so please forgive my enthusiasm.

I was expecting a dry and analytical tome in the style of the two other books I had already read: Winning Strategies for the New Latin Markets and Latin America's Economy: Diversity, Trends, and Conflicts. These books were beneficial in their own way, but Doing Business in the New Latin America is in an entirely different league.

With only six chapters and 236 pages, you might think that the scope of the subject matter would be limited, but Thomas Becker has managed to cover every base by presenting only the most cogent and relevant material.

This book is written with a casual professionalism--I felt as if I were having a conversation with a well-informed friend. Topics that elsewhere are lackluster and uninspired are here presented with enthusiasm and even humor. This book was actually fun to read.

I began speed-reading the text, but quickly found so much worthy content that I finished the book word-for-word. My second time through, I marked up the pages for later reference, only to discover that I marked up almost every page so much that my business partner had to order his own copy.

The chapter: Using Cultural Literacy to Hone Your Competitive Edge (alone worth the price of the book and the investment of time) explains not only the current and relevant customs and rituals of Latins, but gives them context by explaining the origins and evolution of those customs. I found these stories to be as fascinating as they were useful.

I was horrified to learn that many of my new Latin relationships were already tainted by numerous easily-avoided faux pas and that I had missed opportunities that this book made clear to me. Still, my business has only begun to capitalize on this vast new market and the lessons I learned in this book will, I'm certain, be incredibly beneficial.

The entertaining quality of this book does not overshadow its pragmatism. There are negotiating and selling tips (that are contrary to anything you've ever learned in the U.S.), communication methods, risk avoidance strategies, management practices, and brilliant applications of old-fashioned business approaches to an entirely new market.

I particularly enjoyed the contrasts between the business styles and social norms of our two cultures, often presented in crystal-clear tabular format. I was surprised to learn, for instance, that the U.S. fascination with individualism is not well received in Latin America, where collectivism is the norm, especially among workers.

The comprehensive index makes this book an excellent reference source. A Latin associate mentioned guayabera (a style of shirt) in an e-mail referring to dress codes and I found four references to this word in the book.

I learned so much from this book that I came away feeling like an expert in Latin American business. I won't say that this is the only book you should read on the subject, but I will say that if you were only going to read one, this should be it.

    Book Description

    Build teams that move mountains!

Activity participants enjoy a simulated mountain adventure. In this imaginary setting, they must arrive at consensus in order to succeed, and they experience the magic of group power: synergy. Participants face fatigue, dehydration, an avalanche, and more. First, they make decisions on their own. Then, joining the group, they compare answers and attempt to agree on the best course of action.

    Participants will:

  • Listen closely to coworkers
  • Recognize the benefits of soliciting opinions
  • Understand the power of synergy . . . and much more!

The leader and participants will have a perfect opportunity to examine the impact of their interpersonal behaviors on one another, on the group's effectiveness, and on the outcome of their adventure. Every step in preparation, facilitation, and follow-up is carefully detailed in the Leader's Manual. The Activity contains the engaging simulation--every participant will need a copy.

Leaders will watch teams develop and prosper when they are "stranded in the Himalayas."

5 out of 5 stars Discovery in the Himalayas.......2007-01-10

I did this activity with a team. As we worked through the activity, we made some interesting discoveries about each other. 1. One person may appear to have all the knowledge b/c he argues logically, but you have to trust your instincts and weigh arguements. 2. Impressions of other people may be wrong. The person we felt would be the less likely to compromise, eagerly did so. This was a great experience and lots of fun. We walked away with a deeper understanding of each other, ourselves, and the role we play on a team. Highly recommend!

        Book Description

Sensory discriminative analysis forms a fundamental type of methodology and is used widely in sensory and consumer research. Sensory Discrimination Tests and Measurements: Statistical Principles, Procedures and Tables provides a comprehensive discussion of sensory discriminative analysis from a statistical perspective. A wide variety of test and measurement methods, which were developed during the past decades and scattered in various statistical and non-statistical journals, are included in the book. The book gives a unified picture of the state of the subject and reflects some features of advanced sensory discriminative analysis. Designed to be both a reference manual and a research monograph, practitioners will discover various useful test and measurement procedures. More statistically-oriented readers will find the statistical considerations behind the procedures. Sensory Discrimination Tests and Measurements will be of interest to everyone concerned with testing and measuring sensory difference and consumer preference.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Bodybuilding Training Manual with Lots of Exercises.......2006-08-08

This book has a nice collection of exercises, with photographs and detailed description on the proper execution techniques for each one of them. The detailed description on each exercise include: The muscles emphasized by the exercise, its starting position, movement performance, exercise variations and training tips.

One valuable aspect of this training book is that at the end of each chapter you will find a lot of routines from Professional bodybuilders and champs. Each muscle is treated with great detail in its own individual book chapter.

Since the Table of Contents is not included in the book information presented above by the seller, I am including how the book is organized, so everybody can visualize what topics are covered:

                - Basic information.
                - Biceps training.
                - Chest training.
                - Shoulder training.
                - Back training.
                - Thigh and hip training.
                - Triceps training.
                - Abdominal training.
                - Calf, forearm, and neck training.
                - Advanced training techniques.
                - Glossary.

In summary, very useful manual, with lots of exercises and routines, and plenty of information on training techniques and principles as they apply to bodybuilding.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Learning Guide for Weight Training.......2005-09-14

I have owned this book ever since it was first published. Periodically I give it to people asking for guidance on weight training. It is nicely comprehensive on the various exercises, giving the proper form and names of equipment, movements and such. The photos are 80's vintage and dated but the info is not. Training with free weights has not changed. The exercises that worked twenty years ago work just as well today.

4 out of 5 stars Good Exercise Descriptions.......1999-12-02

This book has good detailed descriptions on every exercises and also has info on reps, restance training and how to recover from a workout. The exercise routines are a little out-dated.

4 out of 5 stars This book gives you the "language" of the gym.......1999-10-28

I liked reading this book but I don't know exactly how scientific some of the terms are; like when he calls people who jerk the weights around for high reps "pumpers." I usually refer to them as time wasters because they are injuries waiting to happen. The book does present you with modern training methods, but if I have to recommend one book.....Steve Reeves' new book "Building the Classic Physique" is still the best.

5 out of 5 stars The term "encyclopedia" is deserved.......1999-01-13

For those who want to learn an extensive set of exercises for each muscle group, this is the book. It illustrates every exercise it refers to and indicates the muscles affected. Moreover, the descriptions and illustrations are almost always on the same page for easy reference. Very useful for learning your set of routines and as a reminder before a training session.

Bodybuilders, wisdom has it, go through three stages: First, people make fun of them because they're so skinny; then, after they've been training for a while and starting to see results, people admire them because they look so strong and healthy; then, after they've become successful bodybuilders, people make fun of them again because they have so much muscle. The Gold's Gym Encyclopedia is about getting to that third stage and staying there--and not caring what anyone who's not a bodybuilder thinks of the way you look. For the hardest of the hard-core, this book shows the way to hugeness with the latest information about training, nutrition, nutritional supplementation, and, of course, actually competing in the sport of bodybuilding. There's an interesting discussion of high-volume (lots of sets and repetitions of each exercise) vs. high-intensity (one killer set per exercise) training methods and other systems, plus a token caution against using physique-enhancing drugs (followed by a list of drugs that's far longer than the caution preceding it). If Gold's Gym is the mecca of bodybuilding, then this "encyclopedia" is surely the sport's holy text.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Bodybuilding Training Manual with Lots of Exercises, .......2006-08-08

In summary, very useful manual, with lots of exercises and routines, and plenty of information on nutrition, aerobics, training techniques and principles as they apply to bodybuilding.

                2 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner.......2004-11-01

There's not much to be learned here unless you've never stepped foot in a gym or are a relative beginner. Some of the exercises are shown improperly(e.g. the one-arm dumbell row shows the girl lifting her elbow above her torso at the contracted position - a great way to experience rotator cuff surgery and elbow tendinitis - not uppper back development).

I would say that I learned something from this book, but the fact is I didn't.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent descriptions and pictures of exercises but..........2003-01-22

This book had great descriptions and pictures of many types of exercises for each body part, with numerous variations. As far as an encyclopedia of exercises this book is thorough and very useful. As an intermediate lifter I refer to this book when considering altering my routine and substituting exercises to work specific areas.
However the book also reads like a propaganda piece for Golds gym. It is repleat with statements about how it is the best gym in the world, famous European lifters dream of going there, it is the most inspiring place, etc... The text sounds alot like the bottom review, which is nearly directly cut and pasted from the intro. Also the nutrition and supplement sections are very vague, not particularly describing what vitamins might be good, or why.
Finally the lifting recommendations are all HIT training, that is high intensity training, short trips to the gym, ie. 45 min intense work outs. Other theories are excluded. Although I use it as a reference for exercises, the other stuff would make me prefer Arnolds encyclopedia or the various Ironman's books.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GOOD BOOK FOR THE BEGEINER.......2001-01-12

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK IF YOUR JUST STARTING OF. IAM ONLY SEVENTEEN AND THIS WAS A GOOD BOOK FOR ME TOO READ. IT TALKS ABOUT THE STUFF THAT IS REALLY OVER LOOKED LIKE NUTRITION(PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATES, AND FATS). IT ALSO TALKS ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS AND THE DANGERS OF DRUGS, IT ALSO NAMES ALL THE ILLEGAL DRUGS THAT MOST PEOPLE USE FOR BODYBUILDING. THIS A REALL GOOD BEGEINERS BOOK.

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent..............2000-02-03

Excellent if somewhat dated. A very useful text but not a manual...... an encyclopaedia.... as the title states. I've just bought another one to replace the one I lost when I lent it to someone.

In the case of Steven D. Stark v. members of the American Bar Association, we'd all come out winners, if Stark prevailed. For 12 years Stark taught legal writing to Harvard Law School students; now, he's out to teach the rest of us. "You don't need a literary critic," says Stark, "to know how badly most lawyers write." He offers as evidence most briefs, memos, and law review articles. Using legal jargon helps lawyers confuse the court, which in some cases is the best defense they've got, and it also helps convince impressed clients that exorbitant fees are well earned.

But Stark argues that good legal writing should pass what he calls the McDonald's test. "If you were to read the document you're drafting aloud in McDonald's," Stark asks, "would people understand what you're saying?" He also insists that, like fiction writers and journalists, lawyers need to be good storytellers. "On one level," he says, "a lawsuit is simply a clash of competing stories. If you tell your story better than the lawyer for the other side ... you will have a far better chance of prevailing." Writing to Win is an excellent resource for guidance on organization and research, litigation writing, oral argument, and even writing memos and letters. Stark illustrates his lessons with examples written by lawyers--whereas most law schools rely more heavily on the writing of judges. Among his many salient points are his recommendations that you should lead with your conclusions ("legal arguments or explanations," he says, "should not be like an O. Henry short story") and that you should deal with the arguments against your case. The latter is not only best heard from you rather than from your adversary, but it "actually enhances your credibility." --Jane Steinberg

                      Book Description

From a master teacher, a results-oriented approach to powerful legal writing that communicates, that persuades--and that wins.

Of all the professions, the law has the most deserved reputation for opaque, jargon-clogged writing. Legal education, which focuses on judicial opinions, not instruments of persuasion, is partly to blame. Yet forceful writing is one of the most potent weapons of legal advocacy. In Writing to Win, Steve Stark, a former teacher of writing at Harvard Law, who has taught thousands of aspiring and practicing lawyers, has written the only book on the market that applies the universal principles of vigorous prose to the job of making a case--and winning it.

Writing to Win focuses on the writing of lawyers, not judges, and includes dozens of examples of effective (and ineffective) real-life writing--as well as models drawn from advertising, journalism, and fiction. It deals with the problems lawyers face in writing, from organization to strengthening and editing prose; teaches ways of improving arguments; addresses litigation and technical writing in all its forms; and covers the writing attorneys must perform in their practice, from memos and letters to briefs and contracts. Each chapter opens with a succinct set of rules for easy reference.

No other legal writing book on the market is as practical, as focused on results, as well written as Writing to Win.

3 out of 5 stars Short And Sweet, But Not The Best.......2006-02-07

Stark takes on the whole legal writing proces in a breezy style. Stark was a litigator once, and it shows. But that was years ago, and I think you can tell. In contrast, I liked Bryan Garner's "The Winning Brief" a lot more, in part because Garner gives real-world examples of what to do and what not to do. Stark tells more than shows. As a litigator myself, I find it more useful if an author shows me an example of what not to do and how to correct it. I gave it three stars.

This book is very useful if you are a law student or a young lawyer. It gives simple rules and is easy to read. Some of his advice should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, he believes that briefs should not be written by several lawyers--but most young lawyers have little choice in that regard. Also, Garner's book (which is much longer and more detailed) gives much more advanced techniques. Overall, it is a very solid and readable resource for legal writers. It just is not the last word.

This book is a great tool for the over-verbose legalese writer, as well as the novice who needs to know how to LOOK as if they know what they're doing. It knocks legal writing down to the basics (face it - if you haven't got a valid case, no amount of purple prose is going to save it.) It also clearly defines the parameters of specialized legal writing (pleadings, writs, etc.)

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening, yet funny.......2003-05-19

More than one person has referred to Stark as the David Letterman of legal writing instructors. He advances the notion, also advanced by Bryan Garner and for many years by James Raymond, of clear and (hard as it is for a lawyer to do) interesting writing. The several series of commandments at the beginning chapter beginnings enable you to keep the main ideas in your mind. The book is a good combination of instructional manual and a quick briefing paper. All lawyers should read and embrace Stark's notions. I only wish he had not emphasized winning as the goal, but I suppose that what his publisher needed to get someone to buy the book.

                      5 out of 5 stars great book.......2002-10-02

I own the book by Mr. Stark, and I also recommend the books by Bryan Garner, including, Elements Of Legal Style. The Stark book and the others, like the example I gave are useful for lawyers, law students, and paralegals, like myself, or anyone who writes on legal matters.

                          Book Description

Writers and readers have long been inspired by the haunting wisdom and sheer imaginative power to be found in the fairy tales of the immortal Brothers Grimm. The editors have collected more than a hundred poems inspired by Grimm tales and written by our finest living poets. A brilliant and informative anthology, a teachable text.

Jeanne Marie Beaumont first book of poetry, Placebo Effects, was selected by William Matthews for the National Poetry Series in 1997. She teaches at Rutgers University. Claudia Carlson works at Oxford University Press in New York. Her poems have appeared in Heliotrope, Coracle, Space and Time, Fantastic Stories and NYCBigCityLit.comm

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go Into the Woods Without It.......2003-09-20

THE POETS GRIMM is an essential addition to the collection of anyone who grew up with fairy tales - that is, everyone in America who ever opened a storybook that began "Once upon a time. . ." or watched a Disney movie that opened with a princess tortured by her evil stepmother. Here are the stories from the Grimm brothers collections that terrified and delighted us as children, now revisited with adult distance, wisdom, and humor. Ably edited by Jeanne Marie Beaumont and Claudia Carlson, THE POETS GRIMM embraces the breadth of poetry in English in the 20th century, from our most recent poet laureate, Louise Glück, to writers like Terri Windling and Jane Yolen, best known for their work in contemporary fantasy and science fiction. Anne Sexton's important poem, "Twelve Dancing Princesses," from her groundbreaking collection TRANSFORMATIONS, is included, as is an intensely moving poem by Amy Lowell from 1912, which strikes a surprisingly contemporary note.

A deep sympathy for the much maligned usual suspects, wolves and witches, underlies the entire volume, and frankly, if I were Prince Charming, I'd have a call in to my lawyer about a possible libel suit. Perhaps most American of all the Grimm interpretations found here is Tim Siebles' "What Bugs Bunny said to Red Riding Hood," which alone is worth the price of the entire collection.

Reading the poems in this collection bathes the old tales in a new and revelatory light; most telling of all perhaps are the poems which offer new versions of the detailed and mysterious marching orders given to every fairy tale hero or heroine who set off, willingly or not, on a quest. Neil Gaiman's "Instructions," in this vein, makes wonderful new sense of these ever-puzzling rules. Through these poems we see our own childhoods recast, and the clamor of impossibly conflicting childhood directives we all received invoked and examined.

The Poets Grimm offers a wonderful snapshot of poetry of the last half of the last century, taken through an enchanted lens, and I highly recommend it to anyone who ever felt a little cheated by the words, "And they lived happily ever after."

5 out of 5 stars Grimms in Verse.......2003-09-18

While this collection might appear gimmicky to some, a quick persusal of the table of contents will show that many respected poets have used fairy tale motifs in their work. Beaumont and Carlson have gathered numerous poems from a wide range of poets that reflect the enduring themes and characters we inherited through the work of the Brothers Grimm. The usual suspects, such as Anne Sexton, are here but so are some lesser known poets. The anthology is strong and represents many well-known fairy tales along with a few that are lesser known by the general public. The book is recommended for libraries and classrooms in which poetry and/or fairy tales are taught. It also makes great armchair reading for anyone interested in new interpretations of familiar stories.

                              Book Description

Having once been snubbed by a former best friend, Claudia knows what it feels like to be “dumped.” Now she’s faced with having to do the same thing. Only this is someone she still cares about, the precociously memorable Duffy Booth, her much younger neighbor who was featured in the earlier Claudia stories. But she is outgrowing him, wants now to have friends her own age, and he is smothering her with his dependence on her. The surprising solution to this dilemma is not exactly the one Claudia would have chosen. But she knows she must accept the fact that Duffy is growing up. And so, for that important matter, is she!

“Characters, situations, and family dynamics are credible and entertaining.”
