Book Description
This is a history of economic thought from Adam Smith to John Maynard Keynes--but it is a history with a difference. Firstly, it is history of economic theory, not of economic doctrines. Secondly, it includes detailed Reader's Guides to nine of the major texts of economics in the effort to encourage students to become acquainted at first hand with the writings of all the great economists. This fifth edition adds new Reader's Guides to Walras' Elements of Pure Economics and Keynes' General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money as well as major additions to the chapters on marginal productivity theory, general equilibrium theory and welfare economics.

A poor aproach for economic understanding.......2005-03-29
What can I say about this book? First of all it's very boring ( that's not a bad thing if you're reading Wealth of Nations, but this book it's not worth the try ). Second, it turned out to be a compendium of major economic schools and a poorly "guide to" major economic topics. This book seem more like the personal Blaug's survey on Smith, Ricardo, some of the Austrian School, Marx and company.
Not recomendable although it can provide some insights on the things one should know about economics ( anyway books alike will give you that at least ).
Reader can try Rothbard's "History of Economic Thought" or Schumpeter's "History of Economic Analysis".
Good synopsis but poor analysis.......2002-11-29
I have always felt uneasy with this book since I was an under graduated student, 30 years ago. This is undoubtedly a quiet useful book for anyone who needs a bird's-eye view of the classics in economics. If you don't have time to read Smith's Wealth of Nations or Marshall's Principles, here you have the book you need. However, it is not here that you can look for a good analysis of the meaning and implications of the main schools of economic thought, as well as the relevance of the work of its most distinguished authors and their social and intellectual environment. That is reason why I always preferred Schumpeter's History of Economic Analysis. Today, that I am lecturing this course my dissatisfaction has increased, among other reasons because you have more and better textbooks, such as Lionel Robbins' History of Economic Thought, Mark Skoussen's Making of Modern Economics, or Jürg Niehams' History of Economic Theory, which I really enjoyed reading because they try to make a portrayal of the intellectual and human stature of the most important economists of all times and their background.

good for econ dudes.......2001-08-30
as an econ major i found this book highly informative and interesting. however, if you are not mathematically inclined you might find some of the models and graphs difficult to follow, especially the ones involving differential equations.
but if you are an econ dude, this book is great. lots of insight about how commonly used theories and models came about. well written for the most part, but somewhat wordy at times.
Too much lopsided for my taste........2001-01-15
The problem with this book is that it offers an astounding bibliography, being therefore a mandatory list to further readings, but unfortunately it is entirely teleological, as it considers neoclessic economics of the most conservative kind to represent the acme of all economic thinking.

Book Description
Avinash Dixit and Joseph Stiglitz revolutionized the modelling of imperfectly competitive markets and launched "the second monopolistic competition revolution". Experts in the areas of macroeconomics, international trade theory, economic geography, and international growth theory examine the success of the second revolution in this collection of papers. They reveal what appears to be "missing" and look forward to the next step in the modelling of imperfectly competitive markets. The text includes a comprehensive survey of the two monopolistic competition revolutions, and previously unpublished working papers by Dixit and Stiglitz that led to their famous 1977 paper.
Download Description
In 1977 a seminal paper was published by Avinash Dixit and Joseph Stiglitz that revolutionized the modeling of imperfectly competitive markets. It launched what might be called the second monopolistic competition revolution which has been far more successful than the first one, initiated by Edward Chamberlin and Joan Robinson in the 1930s. In this collection of original essays experts in the fields of macroeconomics, international trade theory, economic geography, and international growth theory address the question of why the second revolution was so successful. They also highlight what is missing, and look forward to the next step in the modeling of imperfectly competitive markets. The text includes a comprehensive survey of both monopolistic competition revolutions, and previously unpublished working papers by Dixit and Stiglitz that led to their famous 1977 paper. With original contributions from Dixit, Ethier, Neary and Stiglitz amongst others, this collection will excite interest amongst researchers, advanced students and economists.

Book Description
An Introduction to Soils for Environmental Professionals assembles and presents the basic principles of each of the major soil science fields. It introduces fundamental concepts and shows the interrelationships between the various branches of soil science - from mineralogy to soil physics. Each chapter was reviewed by a professional in the particular field, and expert contributions were made throughout the text. This well-written and interdisciplinary book begins with introductory material, covering the fundamentals of soils, soil science, and soil classification systems. The presentation of soil mineralogy contains contributions from a lecturer in the field of mineralogy and so constitutes an excellent source of introductory material on the subject. Soil mechanics and soil physics are described in detail, incorporating interesting discussions related to applied problems in soil science studies and research. The coverage of soil chemistry emphasizes environmental aspects and contains information that has been used and reviewed by students in environmental science courses. The coverage of microbiology reflects the input of a specialist in biodegradation and bioremediation of contaminated sites. Sampling techniques and selection of appropriate procedures for soil analysis are reviewed, and contributions from specialists in both of these fields are included. The chapter on agricultural considerations presents the basic concepts of plant and soil interactions. The management and interpretation of data obtained in soil studies is discussed, emphasizing the need for proper handling and presentation of data. The book closes with a presentation of case histories from published articles, public data, and the personal experiences of the author. These presentations illustrate the application of many of the important concepts highlighted in An Introduction to Soils for Environmental Professionals.

Book Description
Marianna Haun wrote about research on large hearts and racehorse performance in her previous book, The X Factor. After three years of continued research and more than 1,000 horse scientifically measured by equine cardiologist Dr. Fred Fregin, Haun reports the newest findings in heart score and pedigree research. She shows readers the photos, pedigrees and actual ECG records of such Thoroughbred racehorses as Northern Dancer, Cigar, Mr. Prospector and more. Standardbred and Quarter Horse racehorses are also featured.
Customer Reviews:
Still scratching my head.......2003-06-21
After spending more than a week of trying to validate the information in Marianna Haun's latest book, I've come away less impressed by the whole X-factor theory than I was after reading the first book.
I think that there are some serious problems with Marianna's research, yet at the same time, she's onto something with merit. There is something to the whole idea of sex-linked performance traits, but I don't think that it's as important as Marianna makes it out to be, nor do I think that her research has been checked thoroughly enough to be very useful to thoroughbred breeders.
I found myself removing 5-10 double copy mares from her list just trying to get some of the pieces of the puzzle to fit together and always ending up with loose ends that couldn't be tied together. The end result is that it's probably not really possible to determine accurately from her theory if a specific horse is carrying the x-factor or will have it. Instead, the best one can probably do is to make sure that horses like War Admiral and Blue Larkspur appear in X-chromosome passing positions and hope for the best.
Book Description
The wedding bouquet, like the center jewel in the engagement ring, is a focal point for the celebration. The bouquet’s colors, arrangement, and even fragrance, can express the mood and style of the ceremony, from the bridal gown and attendants’ attire to the décor of the reception room. How to decide? Each of the 300 bouquets displayed here comes with lavish close-up photos and careful descriptions of each detail, with recommendations for the kinds of dresses and ceremonies they best complement. Every color theme receives special treatment (with price range indicators), from whites, ivories and creams to yellows and oranges, reds and pinks, blues and purples, as well as variegated and original color schemes.
Customer Reviews:
Which one to Choose?.......2007-08-17
With the 300 beautiful bouquets in this beautiful little book that are so beautifully photographed it will be hard for the bride to decide which one to choose. The photography is exquisite and shows the bouquets off to perfection giving you a brief description of how it's made and which type of dress it would be appropriate with and the scents they carry. What more could you ask for?
I would recommend this book for all brides in waiting, to help them decide what type of bouquet to choose, for their special occasion.

Good for color ideas.......2007-07-12
This is a great little book to help you get ideas on colors and different types of flowers for your wedding. It's current and gives you just enough information.
Pretty but not exciting.......2007-05-15
I bought this book when I was trying to plan my wedding, reading all the reviews I felt that it could be an excellent resource. On the good side, the pictures are really beautiful with close ups of each arrangement. It is also very well organized with each section focusing on the main colors in the bouquet. Unfortunately, I found the bouquets themselves to be completely unexciting, I got more ideas flipping through wedding magazines. There was not a single arrangment that I ended up showing my florist as an example.
Just what I needed.......2007-01-18
HI! This book had just what I needed to determine what kind of boquet I wanted. It was all PICTURES of RELAVENT stuff and not just a bunch of words. Also it lists out what kind of flowers are in each boquet and what they mean. That is awesome!
A great place to get ideas for your bouquet.......2007-01-10
This book has so many lovely, colorful photos of wedding flowers you will be spoiled for choice. I found it an excellent armchair guide to the many options out there for the bridal bouquet. Even if you have no idea where to start, this book will give you plenty of ideas for picking a stunning modern wedding bouquet.
Book Description
The Rumpole renaissance continues to build, and now the beloved barrister's many followers have a special reason to rejoice: a sensational full-length Rumpole novel that at last relates the oft-mentioned but never revealed story of Rumpole's first case, the Penge Bungalow affair. Looking back half a century into a very different world, Rumpole recalls a man accused of murdering his father and his father's friend with a pistol taken from a dead German pilot. It was this trial and its outcome that put Rumpole on the map and shaped him into the cantankerous defender of justice that readers know and love. This is a must-read for every Rumpole fan and a compelling invitation to new readers.
Customer Reviews:
Finally we get the whole story!.......2007-09-06
The faithful readers of beloved Horace Rumpole finally get the whole story about the Penge Bungalow Murders which was Rumpole's first criminal case "alone and without a leader". He mentions this case often in his stories. We also get to see how Rumpole and She Who Must Be Obeyed meet and marry. These are both good things! This book is a novel and not a short story, and it's extremely well-done. There are lots of puzzles and mysteries, but Rumpole sees his way through all of it and is able to get his young defendent acquitted. The setting is early 50's, but we slip back and forth to the present day as Rumpole is trying to remember this time and write his memoirs, so we get glimpses of his wife as she is now, as well as Soapy Sam and Claude Erskine-Brown. Present day characters though take a back seat to the characters that were in Rumpole's life when he was a brand-new member of the bar. We also see evidence of the man that Rumpole becomes even when he was young and eager. Mortimer does a great job in this book.
Without A Leader Rumpole Cheats The Gallows Of A Victim, Befriends the Timsons, And Wins The Heart Of She Who Must Be Obeyed..........2007-07-01
Through the years Rumpole has so frequently made reference to his first great courtroom triumph in the matter of the Penge Bungalow Murders that it was good to finally read about that long-ago case. The problem is that so often has Rumpole referred to this first occasion when "alone and without a leader" he carried the day and set an innocent man free of the shadow of the gallows, that perhaps a reader expected more than John Mortimer (could possibly have ever) delivered in this slim novella. It was a lot of fun to read Rumpole as he gazed back half a century into his early days in the Old Bailey, and it was delightful to have this beloved old legal fart honestly portray himself as an ambitious novice elbowing his way into renown, but it was also a bit tiresome to excuse contradictions, anachronisms, and historical discontinuities that plagued Mortimer's sometimes lovingly delivered story of blood stains and stealthy cross examination. Fans of this thirty-year-old series will probably be happy to look past the frustrations that arise from this plot, and if those are forgiven Rumpole and the Penge Bungalow Murders is a quaint trip down memory lane that makes one wish for an entire collection of tales set in Horace Rumpole's junior days.
Rumpole.......2007-03-20
Poor old Rumpole. It is madness as usual (imagine a lawyer not out to empty your pockets like a "cut purse!). A fun read as usual even if "She Who Must Be Obeyed" doesn't get it. You may not agree with some of the liberality, but it is still fun.
Rumpole and the Penge Bungalo Murders.......2007-01-04
This audio book is vintage Rumpole, full of the usual Mortimer humour and wit. I thought that the reader's voice was a bit younger and less gravelly than I expected at first, judging from my experience with several other Rumpole audio books. However, I soon became accustomed to this very minor flaw and thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I'm new to Rumpole: very very British.......2007-01-02
I've never read any of the Rumpole stuff before, though I think I've seen one or two of the shows on PBS. John Mortimer has done a number of these: they've essentially made his reputation in mystery circles. There is one thing that makes Mortimer stand out from other mystery writers: as far as I know, up till this book, as far as I know everything's been short stories. My criticism of this book essentially boiled down to it being the embodiment of Ambrose Bierce's sardonic definition of a novel his book "The Devil's Dictionary": a short story padded. If ever anyone wrote a short story, and then padded it until it could stand alone as a novel, this would be it.
Apparently the Penge Bungalow murders are something that Rumpole, in his other books, speaks of as if he were the best defense lawyer ever, citing this case as proof. In reality, the case is rather mundane, the plot pretty simple, and the characters pretty much what attracts you to the story. The young Rumpole is fun, whether he's trying to make time with a young lady friend (and failing) or clumsily talking to the boss's daughter (and inadvertently proposing to her, successfully), whether he's sparring with the prosecutor's junior assistant, or arguing with the judge. The whole thing is very British, and very very fun. I enjoyed it a great deal, and other than the plot being rather thin, think it a great book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Southern Fiction.......2007-09-21
This was about 6 girls who became friends in college and have continued to meet twice a year since graduation. The setting of the book begins when they are in their late 40's and describes the lives of these women together and apart, dealing with their own personal experiences. I thought King did an excellent job writing about southern women, with their humor, their strength and their spunk. Her writing is full of emotion and I found myself on the quintessential roller coaster ride, laughing out loud and then later, with a lump in my throat. I thought this book shows immense talent in expressing deep emotion, humor and is an excellent depiction of southern fiction. I was surprised to learn she is Pat Conroy's wife. I would definitely be interested in reading another one of her novels.
Very Sweet & Sentimental.......2007-07-05
I found this book at a rummage sale of all places ~~ and since I was battling insomnia, I stayed up most of the night to read it ~~ and finished it this morning after two preschoolers woke me up to tell me they were hungry for breakfast. If you have to have insomnia ~~ this book is great for it! It will entertain you all the way through and you won't be able to put the book down. I didn't laugh out loud but it is funny and a little bit sarcastic ~~ which I love.
This book is about friendship and love. I am wondering though if this book is a sequel because it feels so unfinished ~~ yes, they've been friends for thirty years, but I was hoping to get more of a feel of what they were like when they were in college and just out of college. This novel focuses more on three characters than the six of them together. The other three characters seem to be there as fillers ~~ which is sad because I'd love to hear their stories too. Anyhow, there's Julia, the governor's wife, who feels no passion for her husband and is tired of the glittery life she has been living for years. She has a great secret from her past that haunts her to this day. Then there's Lanier, who allowed an affair to destroy her marriage and she retreats to Dauphin Island, her childhood summer home, to recover and "lick her wounds." There's Corrine, an artist who lives in the Blue Mountains, struggling to recover the peace she has been seeking for years. Together, the three come together in one of the worst and best times of their lives and forged a new chapter in their middle age. Lanier and Corrine were roommates in college and Julia was roommates with Astor, a character that is very unlikable ~~ at least, I didn't like her. She seems to bring trouble with her wherever she goes ...
This novel covers a year of their friendship and leaves much to be desired, especially at the end where the novel seems to be abruptly ended. It went from laughter, wine and being good friends to a sad but happy scene ... there's so much missing that this novel feels like an unfinished work. That's so disappointing to me since I did enjoy her first novel, "The Sunday Wife."
But if you're not nitpicky like me ~~ you will love this novel! How can you not? It's about friendship, regrets, loves, dreams and finding your own way again. It will make you cry (I did) and it will make you long for your friends again ... it is a wonderfully written book ~~ perfect for summer at the lake.

Entertaining and enjoyable audiobook.......2007-04-20
This was a wonderful sotry of sisterhood that made me wish I belonged to such a fun and supportive circle of friends, especially in the face of tragedy. Controlling men who treat their women badly raise my ire. Patricia Kalember's voice gave realistic life to this beautiful story, which did not disappoint.
You gotta be a Dixie Darling.......2007-02-01
Cassandra King can capture a Southern Belle and she does in The Same Sweet Girls story. You almost have to be a Dixie Darling yourself to fully appreciate each of these women, however, and from the reviews not every reader does. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book almost as much as The Sunday Wife. I like King's style of writing, and I know these people she's talking about even though they drive you crazy at times.
I do wonder, however, how many loyal daughters of the W, the REAL W, Mississippi University for Women in Mississippi, the oldest state supported college for women in the country, will rise up in arms because King has moved their beloved alma mater over into Alabama and even brought along its spiral fire escapes. Poetic license no doubt, but as I read, I put it back where it belonged as there are many such friends there who would fit the cast as well. If you belong to one of these groups, you'll like King's story even better.
The Same Sweet Girls.......2007-01-12
I especially enjoyed this book. I have been with a close knit group of women for 20 years now and this book brought all that home to me and the fact that we are getting older and someday we will be losing some of our dear friends. Enjoyed the personalities in the book and the message: Live life to the fullest, be accepting of others, and don't ever be afraid to say what you feel.
