Lacked a rational decision maker in the writing process.......2005-08-24
Economics likes to pretend to be rational, but to say that any rational decision maker uses an ideology, is a contradiciton. Since an ideology is not rational to begin with. So right from the first chapter, I could see where this book was headed.
Filled with mild anectdotes like one of the books larger claims is the raising of minimum wage would be harmful overall towards investment. Then in a small box in one of the chapters, information about recent research showed that these ideas are false. In other words the raising of minimum wage didn't reduce investment, and didn't increase unemployment, infact it reduced unemployment. Not satisfied with that result, the authors note that groups that have found legitamate results such as this, are ignored by politicians, and thus comes the remark that "research has its consequences."
There is also a quote from Einstien talking about how wonderful compounded intrest was. Actually, the man was making a joke, he wasn't serious about it. But the authors go on to explain compound intrest, using Einstien as an example of a great thinker supposedly baffled by compounded intrest. It makes me wonder how much other things were taken out of context.
There are also chapters written about the wonder and might of supply side economics a.k.a Regeanomics. In fact this policy is so wonderful, it is almost as if there is no other economic policy on the face of the earth.
I honestly would have liked to know more about other types of economic policies, both their negative and positive effects, but this book provided nothing but bias.

The educated layperson will find Dr. Thompson's *Spirit of the Soil* to be a perfect introduction to the bewilderingly complex ethical and economic questions that increasingly surround modern agriculture. The author ruthlessly dissects politically charged and often intentionally vague terms and concepts such as "sustainability," "stewardship," the consumer mentality, and the flawed yet indispensible materialism of modern production agriculture. This book will be enormously helpful to anyone who wants to attack farm policy with a more mature understanding of the ethical issues upon which the cultural and physical sustainability of modern agriculture depends

Very interesting mix of politics, science and space research.......1998-04-15
I've just finished this book. It is very enjoyable, and takes you through the politics involved in getting a European space mission off the ground. The author makes it all exciting as well (even now, many years after the mission which I remember from the television coverage), as he tells us the near-failures and last minute fixes which made the mission a success. The science of comets is also explained in some detail, together with theories about the role of comets in the formation of our own planet as we see it today.

Good Account.......2006-03-06
I am in the unusual position of having been both a Duke and a Carolina fan, so I was interested in what Featherston proposed to add to the tale of this storied rivalry, as well as the intense competition with NCSU and Wake Forest.
Featherston's writing was clean and enjoyable, but the book did not include anything that I had not already read in other titles or had already heard from other sources. It would serve more appropriately for someone wanting an introductory lesson on major ACC rivalries. For something more in-depth, other fans might want to turn to Art Chansky's "Blue Blood : Duke-Carolina: Inside the Most Storied Rivalry in College Hoops."
That being said, don't let me stop you from reading it. It's not a bad book at all. Just not the cornucopia of knowledge I was hoping for at the time.

Great Resource Book!.......2006-02-19
I've lost track of the number of weddings that I've conducted or assisted using this book. My wife and I originally used it to find readings for our own wedding 16 years ago. Since then, I've given it to many about-to-be-wedded couples, and they inevitably love it. An uncommonly thoughtful and wide selection of great quotes & readings.
Not the best by far.......2003-08-19
I'm giving this a low score because the cover claims that the selections are specifically for wedding readings, both traditional and informal. I agree with another reviewer: the few excerpts I liked and could use in a ceremony all appeared in other collections. I'd recommend this only to someone who is reading about love and marriage for a peek into other times and traditions...not to gather readings for a ceremony. The texts were certainly interesting and educational, but most are only appropriate for self-conciously nontraditional events, very brave readers, and highly literate guests. Lots of archaic langauge and rather overwrought expressions of love. I'm planning a small, casual wedding and many of the guests are writers also. I'd be embarassed to have most of these readings presented, so I'm returning my copy. If you're researching wedding rituals or are looking for quotes for an article on commitment through the ages, this might be good for you. If you're a busy-wedding-planning bride looking for some readings that will engage but not challenge your guests, I'd recommend looking at other guides.

Great book for finding readings for a special ceremony!.......2000-01-20
I really enjoyed all the readings this book included. It has religious and non religious readings. It includes sonnets, love poems and passages from the Bible. If you want some alternative selections for your ceremony, I definately recommend this book. Whether you are Jewish, Christian or Atheist this book really has something for everyone. Some of the readings they include in this book would be great to be recited at the reception, or be placed in your wedding program or invitation. I would recommend reading this book from cover to cover so that yu don't miss any of the special passages that you may want to incorporate!

An excellent collection of readings from great literature, and various cultures and religions. With so many good selections and such variety, the book nears a one-stop shopping resource for readings. Makes you want to have more than one ceremony! The author provides some subtle suggestion/guidance by grouping readings according to themes and speakers.

Shakespeare has not written a more compelling tale of love and romance than the story woven through this biographical tale of Scott and Kate's journey through her recovery from cancer and their trek along the Montana Continental Divide Trail. The book is not gushy or explicit but shouts of love while restricting its prose to a description of recovery from cancer and the 900-mile journey. No written expression better captures the feelings of neophytes to long distance hiking.
This is truly a book for 4 day backpackers who yearn to walk the distance of one of the big three North South trails, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail. There are no gear lists, no suggestions for how to go the distance. There is an exciting and entrancing tale of commitment, uncertainty, fear, and satisfaction as well as a description of the Montana portion of the CDT which will alert all to its beauty, its lack of remoteness, the presence of livestock, and the amount of time spent on roads as well as the feelings concomitant to the presence of grizzlies.
The book is sectioned in a to allow the selection of either the cancer recovery or the trek, or both. Those who have been through traumatic medical conditions of their own may wish to read the trekking portion only; hikers without this experience will find Kate and Scott's commitment to her recovery truly amazing and uplifting.
A neophyte planning a long distance hike can see the problems with logistics of supply and transportation, route finding, grizzlies, and fishing as well as feel the joy of being out for an extended time. Here too is the camaraderie of the trail, trail angels and the scourge of cattle, clear cutting, and OHV's.
Any hiker thinking of their first two week or longer trip will benefit from this easy read; it is uplifting, inspiring and informative.
Bischke's best!.......2002-08-21
Meeting a grizzly on the trail is terrifying. So is battling cancer. Scott Bischke's creative mind connected these two fears and the result is the cleverly interwoven story Crossing Divides. This true-life tale recounts the trials and triumphs of Kate's (Scott's wife) battle and eventual victory over cancer. Their celebration takes them home to the Continental Divide for an adventurous traverse across their home state of Montana. The challenges of each journey show us the power of attitude in all endeavors. Crossing Divides is a riveting read that does not gloss over the tough parts of life - it infuses them with the hope and strength to persevere.
Healing With Love.......2002-05-22
Crossing Divides is a beautiful love story of a young couple's successful struggle through the wilderness of cancer.
Kate and Scott were a young, athletic, married couple in the prime of their lives when Kate received the diagnosis of cervical cancer. It immediately became "their" cancer.
Their love of wilderness and their desire to return to nature became the focal point of their healing process. Kate and Scott take us along on their post-treatment hike though the beauty of Montana's section of the Continental Divide while relating the story of their cancer ordeal.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants an insight into cancer and everything that relates to it. I especially liked the story because they won.
An Inspiration.......2002-05-20
This book gives hope to anyone who has had to deal with cancer. Katie and Scott fought a tremendous battle against "their recurrent cancer" and came out as the victors by always staying in control of their choices in treatment and caregivers. They researched all their options completly and came up with a plan that would work best for them in beating the odds. I say "their cancer", because Scott was there through each and every step, supporting Katie, so she was never alone. This is a love story between a couple who have great strength and determination, as shown by the parallels of their battle with cancer and the journey they took on the Continental Divide trail of Montana soon after Katie's treatments. It is also a great book for any outdoor enthusiast who loves nature and a happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Crossing Montana by Laura Torres is a book about a girl Carrie who went on a trip across Montana searching for her missing grandfather and also discovering the hidden secrets of her father¡¦s death. Fifteen year old Carrie and her half brother stink along with their mom rushes to Idaho from Washington after they heard that his grandfather left again without leaving a note to tell his whereabouts. It wasn¡¦t the first time that grandpa left without a sound, but it was the first time after Carrie¡¦s father¡¦s death. Carrie looks over the things grandpa left in the house and finds a old antique bamboo fishing pole and some bates missing. Carrie then uses these hints that her grandpa left behind to find him. Carrie stole her mom¡¦s credit card, money and car thinking she¡¦s alone on the quest for grandpa to Montana until she finds Stink hiding in the truck of the car. Just when Carrie and Stink are about to spend their last cent, Carrie¡¦s love Raf comes from Idaho to rescue them. When Carrie finds her grandfather, he tells him all about their family¡¦s secret. On this trip, Carrie finds not only her grandfather, her true love, her family secrets, she also finds herself.
Even though this book is quite short, only 119 pages, it was still one of the best books I have read recently. The story slowly unfolds and the author always makes me wonder what is going to happen next. Torres also does a good job at keeping me involved and interested.
The title was particularly interesting to me; in fact, it was the thing that made me pick up this book. ¡§Crossing Montana,¡¨ got me interested and made me think ¡§what about crossing Montana? What happened when the people in the story were crossing Montana?¡¨
I would recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a good, quick read and touching book!

The title was particularly interesting to me; in fact, it was the thing that made me pick up this book. ¡§Crossing Montana,¡¨ got me interested and made me think ¡§what about crossing Montana? What happened when the people in the story were crossing Montana?¡¨
I would recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a good, quick read and touching book!
Fast but Fantastic.......2003-03-03
This book was not a very long read but for this particular novel I think that it is better that way. This book could not have been carried on for a long time and still kept the readers attention. But thanks to the fast pace nature of the book, it was fun to read. I finished this 119 page book in one night but I couldn't put it down. This book is always adding another piece or leaving you wondering what is going to happen next. The author does a great job at keeping the reader interested and involved. The only reason I didn't give this book five starts was because we never really get to know the characters that well. The twists and turns in this book are put together in a way that isn't overwhelming. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a first-class quick read.
Slowly Unfolding Plot.......2002-11-22
This book is about a young woman who faces many problems with her family, friends, and herself. Her dad died many years ago and she doesn't get along with her mother. She has a crush on a guy named Raf, who she rarely sees and her grandpa is always running away. When her grandfather runs away, yet again, she sets out to look for him on her own. Her adventure leads her to find out who she really is too.
This story had a plot that always left me hanging. The way she goes about doing things is probably a little different than some of us and it's always interesting to see how she will deal with obstacles that come her way. The author does a fantastic job of letting you get to know the characters really well without making the reader bored. There is always something going on in the story that makes you want to read on and on until you're finished! I started reading the first couple of chapters and the next thing I knew, I was done! The first couple of chapters are a little less interesting but the author gives the information needed, and then moves along to the fascinating more detailed plot.
This book was especially interesting to me because my family has always loved Montana and fly-fishing, and I was able to relate to some parts of this story. I would recommend this book to younger readers, maybe between the ages of 10 and 13. The book says that it should be for ages 12 and up but I believe some younger kids might enjoy it as well.
