The book makes good use of examples and follows many common examples as the learning progresses throughout the book. Chapters are broken up into managable pieces coupled with end of chapter learning exercises. The text and charts do contain a number of errors.

Joel Watson has done a terrific job introducing game theory. Beware- game theory is not for the light hearted, this book does contain some very dense mathematical proofs etc. The hardest part of the book is understanding the mathematical proofs for the main ideas of game theory. Once the mathematical foundation has been layed down it is very easy to follow the main concepts such as nash equilibrium, bargaining solutions, etc. Watson writes in a very relaxed and informal fashion, which is very refreshing. If your professor requires this book for class you should not worry, this is one of the best books on the market.

Who is the intended reader?.......2007-04-05

I would have given fewer stars if I thought the book had been written for people like myself.

Anyone writing for instruction has a real challenge: different readers bring different backgrounds, and an explanation that would be essential for one reader is an irritating waste of time for another. It did not seem to me that this author met the challenge well. I found unfamiliar technical terms abounded, and when I figured out what a section was saying in plain English, the result was self-evident.

I remember the wonderful scene in Out of the Silent Planet (Space Trilogy, Book One) where the hero translates the villain's speeches to the god-judge. I felt a little like that reading this book.

I suspect that the overall purpose of this book was exactly the opposite of that expressed as an afterword in The Feynman Lectures on Physics: Commemorative Issue, Three Volume Set. This book was intended to help students pass an exam without having to learn anything they would ever use or remember.

For that purpose it may be useful, so I felt I should not give it too few stars.

I ordered both the East and West Books by Holt. The copyright was 1995 and 1996. I called Lyons Press and these are the most recent books available. Lyons Press just reprinted them in 2002, but nothing was updated or rewritten from the original books. So beware, the content is 10+ years old, even though the covers are 2002 vintage.

First, FIX THE DATE IN THE DESCRIPTION AMAZON!!!!!

In spite of Loopy's warning I ordered this book in hopes he had just received old inventory. Wrong! I received the same 1995 book and when I complained to Amazon they sent me a replacement. Another 1995 book. While the information in the book appears good, it's describing conditions over 10 years old which could be a lifetime for a trout stream. The Clark Fork, for example, is described as "teetering between two possible futures-magnificence and ruin." My online research has indicated the Clark Fork has continued to recover nicely from the heavy metal runoff from the mining but if this book were my only guide I would be skeptical about including it as a destination for my trip.

If this book were up to date I would give it at least 4 stars. But considering the age I would recommend you pass and search for other sources.

A very well-written, thorough review of what is simply an immense topic. I just recently moved to western Montana, and I've found the guide an extremely useful reference.

I just got this book and have not begun to read it but the first thing I noticed was that the copywrite date is way off. The book I got was published in 1995, but the web site says 2002. A lot can change in 10 years. I am debating as to whether to return it and get a newer book.

You really can't go wrong with this book. It is invaluable and the information is original and entertaining.

My only negative is I would have liked the option of buying a more epxensive book with full color photos and more scenery shots of each river.

Once you've had all the basic grammar classes and you want to begin finding resources for building your vocabulary this is a good choice. I suggest looking at the "look inside this book" table of contents. It offers a variety of themes one might encounter while living or spending time in a Spanish speaking country and being able to communicate in these situations.

We use this book as core material in our Beginning Spanish class. Our instructor supplements the book as need be, but in general it provides enough material, as do the follow-on books in the series, to give our students an excellent introduction and capacity in the language.

I the book is o.k. as it was required for my class. There is no attempt to instruct in grammer or increase the understanding of how to use the language. Also it is geared towards using the language in Spain. If ,,, that is what you want it is o.k. Some of the illustrations are hard to read without a magnifying glass. As a part of a comprehensive course in spanish it is o.k. but you are not going to learn how to make converstion spontaniously with this book.

I teach Spanish and ESL/ELL. I often translate materials for teachers who do not speak spanish. I am always looking for good resources to help me with those not so common phrases, as well as, education specific vocabulary. I was intrigued by the title of this book and decided to give it a try despite the lack of content information provided on amazon.
I am actually pretty impressed and feel that if you know even just a little spanish this resource would be very helpful.
It specifies that it is for grades K-8 and I would agree. The book is divided into several categories,such as, beginning of the year, school schedule, grade reports, math skills, special events and others. Within each category are several letters that might be sent home for various reasons. Each one is written in English and then followed by the same letter in Spanish. They are pretty general, so they would be helpful in a variety of school settings. Many of them are very simple such as, there will be no school tomorrow, others are more indepth such as a sample grade report. And as I mentioned earlier, if you know even a little about the language you could add and change any letter to fit your purpose more completely.

This text is undoubtedly the best beginner Spanish book on the market. It's not pretty, and there are no snazzy pictures or colors, but it explains everything clearly and gives lots of opportunity for practice, and review in later chapters. I did a Spanish summer school program last year, and my grammar was much better than my classmates', thanks to this book. If you go through this book cover to cover, you will have an excellent basis for learning to read, write and speak Spanish.

The first, the only, and the BEST-ever Multimedia, program-learning based approach to teaching and learning Spanish. The Instructors Guide(s)--there are several versions: Jr. High, Senior High, and (under a different title) first year college course-- present exactly what to say and do minute-by-minute in the classroom. I taught high school Spanish from these materials until 1993. There is nothing that compares with these materials since they were published in 1974. Other parts of this series include a student textbook, flashcards, the Visual Grammar of Spanish (203 colored posters printed on both sides--a total of 406 posters that are used throughout--), student workbook(s), special verb charts, and a complete set of reel-to-reel or cassette tapes. My students are now adults; they praise these materials for being so unique and claim they were and are the very best learning materials for Spanish. These students still remember a great deal of Spanish from their high school classes, thanks to SFC! The materials are based on the remarkable work of Dr. William Emerson Bull.
