Okay, but I've read better.......2006-11-03

This book is a good breeze-through for anyone who needs to understand some of the basics of money, but I admit I was disappointed in the budgeting section. I have been tracking my expenses for a year now and I was hoping that the budgeting section would provide a good alternative to that (since it is a bit of a burden), but there was actually very little information on how to set up the "simple" budget he is talking about. For those of you who need a better and more in-depth approach to budgeting and debt-reduction, I would highly recommend "Debt-Proof Living" by Mary Hunt (BTW she is also a Christian). It's a much better resource. For those of you who need basic information on investments, car loans, mortgages, etc, this is a good start and will provide the basics without overwhelming you, then you can get more information later as you need it. The bible references in here were a nice touch.

This book not only helps the part-time genealogist, but also gives the purpose of the free persons of color's move to this territory. It help the descendents of these people (such as myself) put a personality on the many names of people we've come to know and have pictures for.

It has spurred my family & I on to take the trip from NJ to IN to attend the 2000 Beech Homecoming & look forward to the Roberts Homcoming in 2001. I greatfully appreciate Stephen A. Vincent's labors.

The Beech and Roberts Communities.......2000-04-19

The Beech and Roberts farming communities were composed of free blacks who came from North Carolina in the 1820s and 30s. They located near Quakers because they knew they would receive kindness and respect from them as well as fair dealings. The communities grew and prospered and an emphasis was placed upon education and spiritual development. Eventually, the settlements began to decline and farmers began to sell their land. Gradually, all the inhabitants moved away. Both communities left behind a proud heritage and continue to hold homecomings once a year.

(I chose the book because I live in Carthage, close to the site of the Beech Settlement and have an interest in its history.) I reviewed the book on April 11 at the Hancock County Library in Greenfield, Indiana. Following the review, the book club members came to my home. From there, our group of eighteen took a "field trip" out to the Beech. Accompanying us was Gladys Boatright, the granddaughter of Eli Archey who is pictured on the front of "Southern Seed, Northern Soil." We all enjoyed the book very much and enjoyed learning of the two fine communities the Beech and Roberts settlements.

As a goju practitioner with over 25 years experience, I found much of this work to be confirming of exisiting knowledge. However there are many,many clear insights which have thown new light on old topics! I found the book to be easy to read, practical, and offering a clear and detailed insight into the world of kata. This book, is a must have for any goju practitioner looking to expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of kata. The book is full of aggravating typographical errors...words missing and so on. The book needs revision with a view to correcting these mistakes which provide the reader with a source of real annoyance. Look past this, and the book should be on every goju teacher's desk for constant reference. Hooray! At last a classy text on goju! But martial artists of any style will find it excellent. Congratulations to the authors. Well done.

This work is a thinking person's guide to martial erudition rather than a "how to" book about combat technique. Through Rosenbaum's words, we learn the power of kata (patterns of movements containing a series of logical and practical offensive and defensive techniques) to transmit proven methodologies from one generation to the next. This brilliantly researched tome provides important insight into the history and development of martial arts - both military and civilian. It is more of a textbook than a light afternoon read, yet it provides fantastic insight into the views and ethics of societies that created the fighting forms that many of us practice today. I learned a lot from it.

There is one flaw in this work which, though not significant, is pretty annoying: there are 43 illustrations, more than half of which are truly awful. It would have been better off without most of them. Now that I got that off my chest, the main theme of the book is that through understanding the evolution of an art form and how martial knowledge is transmitted via kata, practitioners build a greater appreciation of their art and what it truly means to practice it. The author leads us through a journey back in time, where we see consistent evidence of martial systems being influenced by those that came before and/or invaded. Rosenbaum demonstrates that katas in one form or another were used by ancient Greek, Egyptian, Asian, African, and European societies, and that poetry, dance, and song were also significant methods of preserving and transmitting battle-tested fighting strategies and tactics across the ages.

Michael Rosenbaum really knows his stuff. He began his martial arts training at the age of five. Along with Isshin Ryu karate, which he has been practicing for 25 years, he has studied Bando, Judo, and Boxing. Rosenbaum is former member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, and has completed Infantry, Airborne, and Jungle Warfare Schools. I found his work extremely well researched and informative.

I went home for dinner one night and noticed new behavior around the table from our younger children. The boys stood until their mom was seated. No one was sneaking food before our prayer. They all waited to ask to be excused until the last one was done eating. Was I in the wrong house? No, my wife had been reading this book and immediately saw a personal application for our home in the area of table manners and had implemented it. What a great introduction to this book!

I had already been impressed by the insights in the book about parent/child relations. With 8 children from 21 to 2 years of age, we feel overwhelmed with parenting suggestions at times, but I can see how I can apply some of what I've learned already and the encouragement from the authors to just start with what we could handle was refreshing. The candor and practicality are great. This book is not about theory, but about real life and investing in the well being of our children.

I would heartily recommend this book to parents who are trying to: develop emotionally secure, loving children; develop vision in their children; create multigenerational foundations of family ties; and develop their value systems with their children. Outstanding book!

this early America romance is just about perfect. It has all the elements of a great romance-adventure, romance, comedy, great dialogue and steamy love scenes. This is one of the funniest romances I've read.

If you love plucky, unusual heroines , you'll love Theodosia! Paisley was realistic in the fact that Theodosia is a genius-but has no life experiences or common sense (I personally know several folks like this:)). Roman is a fantastic hero. One part tortured hero, one part alpha male, and one part sweet, funny everyman.

If you've never read Rebecca Paisley-this is a good book to start with.

Glad to read it-it got me out of a streak of really bad books and renewed my reading interest.

A somewhat naive and beautiful genius and her wise-cracking parrot head west in search for the perfect sperm doner and finds love instead in a tall, dark Cowboy. This is a great book...very funny and filled w/ sweet emotions. I recommend all of Ms. Paisley's books. Do yourself a favor and read them all! You won't regret it...Paisley's the best.
