Book Description

A seminal work in fleshing out the kind of leadership we need to renew and prepare communities for the demands of democracy in the coming era.

Ronald Heifetz, director, Leadership Education Project, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

Jolted by the economic downturn of the early 1990s and the rapid globalization of the economy, a group of California business, government, education, and community leaders formed Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, a collaborative regional alliance that helped create a strengthened economy and an improved quality of life in their community. Now three of Joint Venture's advisers outline the process that led to this dramatic turnaround, as well as success stories in Florida, Ohio, Kansas, and Texas. They reveal the powerful new concept of civic entrepreneurship, and they offer practical, proven strategies that community leaders across the country can employ to foster local economic development and renewal.

Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy explains the unique leadership qualities that set civic entrepreneurs apart, and illustrates how these leaders can emerge from all levels of private, public, social, and civic organizations. The book shows how civic entrepreneurs forge powerfully productive linkages at the intersection of business, government, education, and community, and it demonstrates how they operate at the grassroots level to create collaborative advantages that make it possible for their economic communities to compete on the global stage.

Citing numerous real-life examples, authors Douglas Henton, John Melville, and Kimberly Walesh illustrate the necessary steps to build an economic community. They show how civic entrepreneurs motivate and network to organize for action, set priorities, and mobilize resources to get things done. Finally, they demonstrate how to sustain cross-sector collaboration over the long haul for the good of the community. An indispensable resource, Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy offers step-by-step guidance and practical advice equally useful to business executives, elected officials and public managers, community development practitioners, or concerned citizens who want to take an active role in shaping the future of local economic development.

4 out of 5 stars Prescription For Community Change In The Early 21st Century.......2002-05-13

Beginning several decades ago with Alvin Toffler and carried on by Peter Drucker, Thomas Friedman and a host of other writers, a number of examinations of change in our world and how we can/should/may cope with all of it have made their way to bookstore shelves.

This current epistle by three writers who've had some hands on experience in working with communities who want to adapt to the switch in the United States from that of a manufacturing based society to a technology based one offer some insights garnered over the past decade or so by communities that are changing the focus of their notion of what the change means to their communities.

Using diverse regional examples such as San Jose, California and Silicon Valley, Austin, Texas, Cleveland, Ohio and Phoenix, Arizona, the notion of the civic entreprenuer as the force for change is nicely developed. The writers demonstrate how leaders from government, business, as well as the education sectors can come together to become a powerful source of community improvement. A specific example of this used in the book is Enterprise Florida; an organization clearly focused on garnering a fair share of the economic opportunities available to communities in the Sunshine State.

For those who understand the forces being brought to bear on communities, and for those who want to practice the mantra of thinking globaly while acting locally, this work can be especially meaningful, and well worth the time it takes to read.

1 out of 5 stars Going Global instead of Going Local.......2002-01-04

Having looked at the sample pages, I am led to be very skeptical about the thesis. Anyone reading this book should also read Michael Shuman's "Going Local." Some of the examples Henton et al. use appear as counerexamples in "Going Local."

Henton et al. are right in one sense, it is possible to create a more prosperous community by going global, but it may not be the most desirable prosoperity:

1. There is likely to be more inequality, as the split between lucky winners and unfortunate losers increases.
2. The prosperity is likely to be cyclical and unstable because it will be dependent on the world economy and the whims of external investors.

The correct solution (Shuman's solution) is to focus on providing the basics to as many local community members as possible.

5 out of 5 stars New hope for South Africa found in Amazon!.......1997-07-12

As we grapple to build a new society in South Africa, Grassroots Leaders for a new Economy shone like a beacon to show there is a way. A way to build trust and collaborative relationships in an emerging economy.

Although based primarily on examples of US communities, many of the problems faced by cities and regions around the world have remarkable simialarities. There is much we can all learn from each other and this book is remarable in sharing the insights gained by 1000's of community leaders.

Practical and down to earth, Doug Henton and his co-authors give a step by step guide to building the necessary trust and dynamic working relationships in a diverse community.

This is essential reading for anyone involved in community development.

        Book Description

Using a large microdata sample from the most recent decennial census, this book documents the economic disparities facing minority-owned business owners relative to non-minorities. The book incorporates a wide range of geographic and industrial categories and demonstrates that these disparities persist even when other important factors such as education, experience, wealth and family structure are held constant. Self-employed business owners comprise an important and growing sector of the U.S. economy. In contrast to wage workers, the issue of discrimination against minority business owners has received little attention from economists. However, recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions have made the continued constitutionality of affirmative action in public sector purchasing and contracting contingent upon documenting the existence of discrimination against such businesses within relevant geographic or industrial boundaries. The author shows that among prime working age males, being an entrepreneur is a relatively more lucrative form of employment, on average, than working for a wage. Typically, however, non-Hispanic whites become entrepreneurs at much higher rates and receive much higher earnings than their black, Hispanic, and Native American counterparts. The author's findings of racial and ethnic disparities are strongest for black and Native American entrepreneurs. Positive levels of discrimination facing Hispanic and Asian entrepreneurs are also documented.
The book also includes discussion of relevant Supreme Court decisions, how economists attempt to measure discrimination and the major sources of data available for studying minority business enterprise.

          Book Description

Written by one of America's preeminent labor historians, this book is the definitive account of one of the most spectacular, captivating, complex and strangely neglected stories in Western history—the emergence of migratory farmworkers and the development of California agriculture.

Street has systematically worked his way through a mountain of archival materials—more than 500 manuscript collections, scattered in 22 states, including Spain and Mexico—to follow the farmworker story from its beginnings on Spanish missions into the second decade of the twentieth century. The result is a comprehensive tour de force. Scene by scene, the epic narrative clarifies and breathes new life into a controversial and instructive saga long surrounded by myth, conjecture, and scholarly neglect.

With its panoramic view spanning 144 years and moving from the US-Mexico border to Oregon, Beasts of the Field reveals diverse patterns of life and labor in the fields that varied among different crops, regions, time periods, and racial and ethic groups.

Enormous in scope, packed with surprising twists and turns, and devastating in impact, this compelling, revelatory work of American social history will inform generations to come of the history of California and the nation.

2 out of 5 stars Mainly overview, many words, few pictures,.......2004-01-25

This book was a poor choice for me.

I am taking up golf for the first time so I was looking for a book that would be very specific to the fundamentals. I wanted step by step instructions that included detailed pictures. I also wanted concise information on golf rules, etiquette, and equipment technology trade-offs.

This book has a lot of information but it depends on word after word to tell its story. Very few pictures are included to supplement the information. Therefore, it fails almost totally at my first requirement for detatiled fundamentals. The second requirement is partially met. There is information available on many topics but it is not concise.

Overall, reading this book was like sitting through a friend's vacation slide show. I listen to all the general comments and tangents(which someone else may find interesting), waiting for the specific nugget I'm interested in, but ultimately fall asleep.

If you enjoy broad discussions or want a higher level overview, this book may be right for you - but it did not meet my requirements.

4 out of 5 stars Great for golfers all around.......2003-12-29

This is one of the most comprehensive books on golf around. There is a wealth of information on virtually every aspect of the game, from the physical mechanics of making the stroke, to the mental side of playing. Everything in here is required knowledge for anyone playing golf, or someone looking to get started.

Probably my only problem with the book is the lack of exercises listed. A great many appear as pictures with short captions, but many of these drills may be helpful to a variety of players. If performed incorrectly, they may damage your game, which is probably why they were not described in detail, but given that almost every segment ends with "Listed to what your PGA instructor says", it would be nice to know that the PGA trusts its readers to do just that.

Another part that would have been nice, but not neccesary, would be a more in-depth section on club design and construction. With so many people going out to buy custom made equipment, a little more information on exactly what standards are used to determine club length etc. might have put some people's minds at ease when at the pro shop. We all trust the PGA and its professionals, but knowing what they know isn't going to detract all that much from our experience. Rather, it can help us understand why we pay more for fitted gear.

In sum, buy this before you buy any other book on golf. Then, if you still feel you need more even with an instructor, shop around.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Rick Martino!.......2002-08-15

After having some trouble with my swing, I knew that I had to better understand the basics of the game in order to improve. I got this book as a gift and it really helped me define the fundamentals of golf and improved my play. I enjoy the game more now. The concise and straighforward presentation was easy to read. The format made it easy to find just what I was looking for. I highly recommend this as a great gift to the golfer in your life!

A comprehensive volume filled with history, theory, equipment selection, lesson plans, and drills, The PGA Manual of Golf is, in essence, a more public, and abridged, version of the textbook the PGA uses to instruct its teaching pros. At times complex and often dry, the book is perhaps the most detailed of all the instructionals. 4 out of 5 stars Great review for Certification exam.......2007-05-12

This book was very helpful in preparation for the med-surg certification exam. When I took the exam, this book proved to cover most of the content on the exam. The book is easy to follow and covers all the main points. My only critique is that I wish there were more practice questions in the book.

                  4 out of 5 stars Med-Surg nursing certification.......2006-03-12

good information. Easy to pick out the chapters that go along with my classes.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great reference for Med-Surg Certification.......2004-08-21

I found this text to be the easiest to use of all the review materials available to study for the Med-Surg Certification exam. It is comprehensive, but easier to use and understand than other outline-based review books.

Please don't be mislead, there is more to studying for the certification exam than just reading a review book. Certification is a process. Use the review book to find your weak areas but you may have to use additional resources to study for them.

                  Book Description

It is 1965, and Eric is 16. It's a year to fix in the mind, especially when you're a boy stretching to become an adult. You pull away from parents. You discover Louise, her stunning black hair and eager brown eyes. Your first kiss is like falling into the House of Pleasure. The seven interlinked stories in Necking with Louise immerse teen readers in the coming of age of a robust but sensitive teenager. The stories chronicle his encounter with a sudden prairie blizzard, his discovery of the heart-breaking unpredictability of first love, his role in a championship hockey game, his first summer job, and his memories of his grandfather. But they also scratch into the rich prairie earth a record of Eric's candid search for manhood.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever.......2002-02-25

I felt that this book was amazing. I am only 14 and I chose this book for my book report. A lot of thnigs happened to Eric but I thought that the author, Rick Book, did a good job portraying life in 1965. I think that you will enjoy this book! :-)

3 out of 5 stars Necking with Louise.......2000-04-04

I thought that the book was interesting. I liked how it was set in 1965 and learned about everything about that time period- Vietnam War, Civil Rights, etc. I thought an awful lot of things happened to the main character, Eric, in the time frame of this story and couldn't relate too much with him.
