2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-05-23

I was not very impressed with this book. My background is that I am familiar with stock market basics but needed a better understanding of how economic indicators that are often reported in the Wall Street Journal play into the stock market. For instance, people seem to write a lot about the jobs report and I never understood all of the ramifications of this indicator. How the Economy Works doesn't say anything about the jobs report.

The descriptions of various aspects of the economy weren't documented as thoroughly as I would have liked either. As a specific example of this, I was familiar with the basic idea of GDP but didn't understand all of the details. How the Economy Works broke down the components that make up the GDP but did not explain why certain components were necessary, such as "changes in business inventory." In other words, what was the rationale for including changes in business inventory as a component of the GDP? You would never find out by reading this book. You would only know it's in there. I didn't find my economic confusion cleared up very much with this book.

I later purchased The Secrets of Economic Indicators (ISBN: 0-13-145501-X) from Amazon and found this book much more clear, factual, and in depth. In chapter 3 they covered the jobs report as "the most eagerly awaited news on the economy". The GDP description was very clear in comparison to How the Economy Works, and much more thorough.

My recommendation would be to go with another book if you are interested in really understanding the various aspects of the economy. However, How the Economy Works might be useful for people who feel overwhelmed and just need a good overview of the different aspects of the economy.

5 out of 5 stars How the Economy Works: An Investor's Guide to Tracking the Economy.......2007-01-30

This is an excellent book for those beginning a study of real world economics. There are plenty of charts and clear explanations of how the Economy's pieces fit together. I have used it in several courses and can report that my students have found it very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Problem is the publishing date: 1999.......2003-09-12

Most of the data in this book ends no later than 1998, so shows everything trending merrily upward. Not the author's fault, of course, and you could update it yourself if you've got lots of free time, a highbandwidth Internet connection, access to an excellent library and money for some subscriptions. Otherwise, an update to show the bubble and bust would be most helpful.

But a good book to read if looking for a start at understanding the sources of and connections between the various economic indices and data that are so glibly thrown about in both the popular and financial media.

4 out of 5 stars The High School Opinion.......2003-03-14

The average person does not know much about the U.S. economy, even though they are connected to it everyday. Mr. Mennis' book, How the Economy Works, takes this complex subject down to the average readers skill, and takes them step by step through each aspect of it. I was galvanised by the way Mennis used graphs and charts to back up his text. It was very refreshing to see this, because in school, they explain, but never show you how it works in life. If you want to major in business this would be a great book for you. Mr. Mennis tells about starting up a new business and how to work the stock market, so it doesn't work you. Mennis believes that the five best ideas for understanding investments are listing specific goals, how to meet these goals, set an absolute rate of return so you can see it your goal is realistic, a time in which to measure your results and to determine the risks involved before getting into a situation you can't get out of. If you still want more info buy the book, it's a great way to learn about the U.S. Economy.

1 out of 5 stars economics is not the same as investing.......2002-09-10

A big problem with this book is the title. The book should have been titled "An Introduction to Economic Data that Impact Investments".

The unstated premise of this book is that you must understand and follow scores of economic indexes to make profitable investments. If you agree with that premise, this book is for you.

I tend to think that making money on the stock/bond markets requires more than just understanding economics. Whatever that is, you will not find it in this book.

              Book Description

The use of images as evidence in historical writing has been largely neglected by historians, though recent interest in the importance of visualization in scientific literature has led to a reappraisal of their value. In Drawn from Life, Victoria Dickenson uncovers a vast pictorial tradition of 'scientific illustration' that reveals how artists and writers, from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth century portrayed the natural history and landscape of North America to European readers.

Dickenson undertakes a close reading of the images created by European artists, most of whom had never seen North America, and unravels the threads that linked the images to the curiosities and specimens that reached the Old World. Drawing on a wide range of illustrations - woodblock prints, engravings, watercolours, and maps - she examines several important issues regarding the nature of imagery: the tension between naturalistic representation and stylistic conventionalism; the role of the medium used in creating the image (especially the rise of printmaking); the historically changing function of images; and the need to consider historical context in 'reading' such pictures.

While many contemporary artists claimed that their work was 'drawn from life,' their images were, in fact, also works of the imagination. Drawn from Life is an illustrated archaeology of the imagination that allows readers to see North America as Cartier, Champlain, and early naturalists perceived.

                Book Description

LeBron James is a six-foot-eight gift from the basketball heavens. For the past two years he was the undisputed finest high school player in America. He was the one NBA scouts drooled over, corporations dreamt of, event promoters begged for, and now fans clamor after. With appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated and features on ESPN and newspapers across the country, never before has a high school basketball player been so highly touted or an eighteen-year-old athlete been the subject of such fascination. In fact, no basketball player in the world has had this level of attention this year. Love him or hate him, there is no denying that LeBron James is a force on the basketball court, and his rags to riches story is the stuff that dreams are made of. Now, for the first time, author Ryan Jones has written a book that incorporates everything that is King James: the controversy, the athletic potential, the jerseys and the Humvee, the hob-nob-bing with the world's most famous stars, and, of course, the game. This is a book for every fan of LeBron James and for anybody interested in reading about an NBA basketball career in the making.

5 out of 5 stars Overall a very good read.......2006-06-15

This was quite an enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the rise and rise of this basketball prodigy due to all the hype surrounding him. There is no doubt that Lebron James is one hell of a talent after seeing many of his highlight plays on T.V, and on the net. This book details his performances in school for ST Vincent-ST Mary and other events, the frenzied interest from fans and media wanting to see him perform, sport commentators and coaches raving about him being the best thing in the sport of basketball, hummergate, speculation about his future career plans, and the fight for his feet between Adidas and Nike in which the latter won because the former could not offer huge amounts of money in the bidding war with its major rival. Great stuff.

                5 out of 5 stars Winnebago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-12

This was a AWESOME book. It really looks into the real life of LEBRON JAMES and shows you his trip into stardom. This book is great if you like watching basketball careers grow because is probably the most popular young basketball players in the world today and this book did a really good job of showing how LEBRON is always improving his game. I have read a ton of sports autiobiographies and this one was probably the most inspiring because it took an indept look at the personal and also basketball part of LEBRON JAMES life.

                4 out of 5 stars Lebron James.......2006-04-11

King James: Believe the Hype, The LeBron James Story by Ryan Jones was a great book
to read it tells you about LeBron James early life and about his high school games and
when he goes into the NBA . He was born in Akron, Ohio on December 30, 1984.
He was mostly raised by his mother, LeBron went to school at St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School . He was the starting point guard . James averaged 18.2 points and 6
rebounds per game.Lebron James was also a star football player in addition to
basketball, LeBron was also First-Team All-Stateas a wide receiver for his high school
team. But, he didn't want to get hurt so he quit football and concentrated on playing
Basketball . In his junior year, he appeared on the cover of SLAM Magazine which
show everybody in the world who he was.In the NBA LeBron join the Cleveland
Cavaliers they made many changes to there lineup , adding Larry Hughes ,
Damon Jones and Donyell Marshall and many more . Now LeBrons James is Standing at
6 feet,8 inches and is 21 years old. That some information about what the book tells you
about. This was a great book and if you love basketball you should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars KING JAMES is awsome.......2006-01-11

My story is about LeBron James and how he grew up. When he was a freshman in high school he won tournament MVP for the state, which is amazing.
The beginning starts at his childhood and continues so on. My favorite part in the book is when he's a freshman and he played football. Their team made it to state. They lost in the finals, but he got All State. That means hes one of the best in the state. Later that year he made the basketball team. They made it to the state finals. They won and LeBron got MVP. Ryan Jones is a senior editor at SLAM, the monthly basketball magazine. He lives in New York. I would recommend this book to sports fans that like LeBron James. The age and gender I would recommend this book to is ages 13-35 and boys.

4 out of 5 stars Stephen F. Miller Place, NY.......2005-10-28

King James by Ryan Jones is a biography of Lebron's James' life prior to going into the NBA. It tells about how a little kid who lived in poverty with his mother goes on to become a six foot eight inch 245 pound high school basketball superstar. Lebron has to deal with the pressure of the media and go against tough opponents almost every game. Somehow he is able to handle all of this and all the other obstacles in his life. This is an entertaining book to read and I reccommend it to anyone who is a fan of Lebron James or is interested in reading about the rising star. The author does a great job of telling how Lebron is on and off the court. After reading this book you will come to respect Lebron as a basketbal player and a person.

My son has been hooked on the Time for Kids Almanac since he was 5 years old. He is now 10 and we have purchased one every year!. He is in the 4th grade and his own teachers have called him "a walking encyclopedia". We are truly aficionados of this little great book!
