Book Description
In this witty, accessible, and revealing book, Deirdre McCloskey demystifies economic theory and practice to show that behind the economists claim to certainty is the ancient art of storytelling. If You're So Smart will engage, enlighten, and empower anyone trying to evaluate the experts who stand ready to engineer our lives.
"Writing with delicious wit and great seriousness."—Publishers Weekly. "
"McCloskey is more interesting on an uninspired day than most of her peers can manage at their very best."—Peter Passell, New York Times
Customer Reviews:
I don't know any rich economist, do you?.......2000-06-04
This book is great! McCloskey explains, with an easy to read style, but without losing the rigor on the content, how the economists tell stories to persuade the public, politicians and their colleagues. With a witty approach, McCloskey proves that economists aren't able to predict, why aren't all of them rich, then? The author gives several examples of how economists use rhetorical devices with the aim to persuade their audience, instead of the scientific methodology they officially support. This amazing and amusing book is not only for economists; if you think that economics are very serious, read this and the next time it will be harder for the economists to fool you!

Book Description
Collaborative decision making processes are a form of communication inside organizations. Their functioning can teach lessons for the design of electronic office systems. Those processes are open ended and therefore decide themselves on their form. Like oral deliberations which cannot be modelled in advance any open ended communication process needs means for common control over the further advancement and the ending of the process.
The history of German administrative practice and its special methods of using disposals for the control of common processes shows the creation of records as based on communication needs generated by the intention of joint actions. For electronic decision making processes the purposes remain the same, but the means have to follow the effects of electronic communication on messages.
The book is a reworked English version of a thesis for the official qualification for university professorship accepted by the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer. Germany.
Book Description
An epic experiment of cultural evolution.
In the 1920s the traditional migration routes of wild caribou changed, making it difficult for native Inuit hunters. Faced with a crisis of Inuit survival and having observed the success of reindeer herding in Alaska, the Canadian government established the practice in the Mackenzie Delta area. To help the Inuit make the shift to the new economy, Scandinavian reindeer herders, the Sami, were brought to Canada. To bureaucrats, changing the Inuit from a hunting-gathering culture to a herding-nomadic culture appeared straightforward and simple. Reality proved otherwise.
The Reindeer Herders of the Mackenzie Delta is the fascinating true history of the Canadian Reindeer Experiment as experienced by Otto Binder, an Inuit herder, his Sami wife, Ellen Pulk Binder, and their son, Lloyd Binder, who continues to herd reindeer.
The book explores their struggles and ultimate survival. Their story is also an account of the survival of two circumpolar cultures -- Inuit and Sami -- in a global society.
With contemporary and archival photographs,
The Reindeer Herders of the Mackenzie Delta recounts a true-life adventure with valuable insights for contemporary readers.

No, CBS hasn't broadcast the Final Four every year since Dr. Naismith first hung a peach basket in his gym; it only seems that way. Still, the network has been present at the men's NCAA basketball tournament without interruption since 1982, and it's become synonymous enough with the hoops extravaganza that it's earned the name-above-the-title treatment it gets here.
With its oral history format, CBS Sports Presents is a useful companion to March Madness. It examines the thrills--and agonies--of 21 Final Fours going back to the early '50s. Along the way, it stops to focus on Wilt Chamberlain; the UCLA juggernaut; the 1966 Texas Western-Kentucky confrontation with racial implications far beyond the court; the 1979 game that first shone a national spotlight on Magic and Bird; and on into the '80s and '90s with Duke, North Carolina, Georgetown, Villanova, UConn, and, of course, NC State's improbable victory over Houston. Each Final Four comes with scores, all-tourney teams, and the requisite factoids; there's even a section for TV junkies on how CBS prepares for and covers the event.
As editor, Fulks is smart enough to avoid replaying the events from a reporter's distance. Once he's set the scene, he moves off camera and lets the participants themselves recall the action, the glory, and the heartbreak through their own eyes and in their own voices. His roster of first-person accounts is impressive--Lovelette, John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Kent Benson, Denny Crum, Guy Lewis, Steve Alford, Billy Tubbs, Mike Krzyzewski--all add color, immediacy, perspective, and some fascinating analysis from the inside. Still, it's the names scratched from the lineup--Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Grant Hill, Rollie Massimino, Christian Laettner, Bobby Knight, Dean Smith, and anyone from the '66 championship Miners--that so tantalize. CBS Presents would have only benefited by hearing from them. --Jeff Silverman

Customer Reviews:
Lots of great memories.......2000-03-15
I didn't think that I would learn a great deal about "The Big Dance" since I've been an avid fan since I can remember. Boy, was I wrong! This book has a ton of tidbits from the guys (hey-they're the ones that played & coached!) that lived it. The only part of the book which involved CBS was the end where they give you a behind the scenes look at the TV, which was kind of interesting too. But the memories that Coach K and others have are well worth the price of admission!
Cheaper than a nosebleed seat and a good read while watching the show!
Best Basketball Book Ever!.......2000-03-06
I read the book this past weekend - it was great! I couldn't wait to read the next story. I have never seen a book with such a comprehensive list of storytellers, from John Wooden to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to Steve Alford, to Jim Boeheim, to my favorite - Mike Krzyzewski. The majority of the stories are fascinating.
This book is a must-read for any college basketball fan. Now I'm even more fired-up about March Madness!

The
HarperCollins Robert is simply the best French dictionary you can buy. Here's why:
With more than 820,000 completely revised and updated entries and translations, the HarperCollins Robert offers complete coverage of contemporary terms in business, technology, politics, culture, and medicine.
The HarperCollins Robert is the most comprehensive single-volume French-English dictionary available.
- Consistently Updated:
The HarperCollins Robert is compiled in conjunction with the leading dictionary publisher in France and updated on a regular basis. The dictionary is highly praised for its accuracy, especially in the notoriously slippery area of French slang.
- More colloquial usage than any other French-English dictionary:
The HarperCollins Robert places emphasis on current French and English, extensive cross-referencing, and has an in-depth guide to usage of idioms and phrases.
- More effective guidance:
The HarperCollins Robert contains a seventy-six-page "Language in Use" section designed to facilitate self-expression in the foreign language and a comprehensive system of style labels that identifies whether a word is formal, informal, literary, vulgar, dated, or euphemistic.

wonderful.......2006-11-10
This dictionary has every word possible (well, a good amount anyway). lol. Definetly a great purchase.
Not the Last French Dictionnary You'll Ever Buy.......2006-07-17
Although I cannot begrudge this fine dictionary that fifth star, it doesn't come close to reaching the bar set by the word "unabridged" when applied to English dictionaries. As others have noted, this is ideal as a dictionary of first resort. That said, for a dictionary whose cover boasts "Thousands of...Technical...Terms," I still find myself returning to my HARRAP'S NEW COLLEGIATE for such things as botanical names, culinary terms, and the like. What's more, the tiny LAROUSSE DE POCHE is still a much better authority on the French/English cognates. Still, the ROBERT will almost supplant those half-dozen books of French slang you have beaten to death, and it is unparalleled in its organization. You can't beat the price, and if you spend any time reading in French or listening to French, it is easily the best bargain out there. Just don't throw away your other dictionaries.
A five star dictionary alone--but not as an upgrade.......2006-03-15
I think this is the best single-volume, bilingual dictionary available for French and English. However, one word of warning, if you already own the sixth edition of this work, do not think you're getting much in purchasing the seventh. Every section has an identical number of pages. Really, the only updates you're getting (other than corrections) are a few words inserted here and there--not enough to change the total page count of any particular section. For instance, I found the new terms "weblog" and "webmail" (although "blog" was not included) in comparing one page between the sixth and seventh editions. So if you already own the sixth edition, realize that you will get very little more in upgrading to the seventh. For this reason, I'm thinking of returning it. One nice change, however, is that the seventh edition does not have the fairly useless thumb index and has a plain edge.
That being said, in comparison with the Larousse and Harrap's single-volume, bilingual dictionaries, I definitely think this one is the richest in terms of defining real usage. I keep Larousse as a backup and have dispensed with my Harrap's all together.
Excellent work.......2006-01-30
While it is certainly impossible for a dictionary to be completely up-to-date and 100% comprehensive, this dictionary is very close. It is a great primary dictionary and can almost stand alone without a backup dictionary. No translator should be without it. And the price is phenomenal for the value.

Its cool, til you get to the horseshoes, oysters, etc........2007-08-13
I agree with all the negative reviews on this page. The rest of the guide is awesome, but the locations of the Horseshoes, and Oysters are off, sometimes way off. I finally had to write down the places where they were so I would not forget. not much thanks to editors, but on the other hand, they made a great guide, sans the location maps.

As everyone already knows from reading the other reviews here, this guide contains a vast amount of errors in regards to the Photo Ops and Horseshoes. I don't think that BradyGames has published a corrected version, which they could offer in exchange for the flawed version. However, they have released corrected information on their website:

Comparison of PS2 to XBOX and PC Version.......2007-10-02
I have owned both versions of this guide, and I ended up giving away the PS2 Version. It was very inaccurate in some of the locations of items. For a specifice example, the locations of the Photo ops in San Fierro. The locations were not accurate, and not even matched up correctly by number. Even some of the horseshoe locations were completely inaccurate that they were not even the correct location, which annoyed me because I spent a large amount of time searching for something that was not there. I own a PS2, but I use the XBOX & PC version because of its accuracy. There is no real difference, as the guide does not tell you which button needs to be pressed, so the XBOX version still fits.
Also, for those who I know are curious, the XBOX version gives more insight on the dating and "coffee" aspects, unlike the PS2, which skips over it.
Complicated to use!.......2007-05-15
This guide is in NO WAY easy to use. No index or table of content, and being as big as it is it's not easy to search through without them. However the content is very good, but you can save yourself some money and just Google 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas online strategy guide' and you'll find one with the same info, help, tips, secrets, etc you need to complete the game with 100% progress for free.
GTA fan.......2007-05-12
This guide is very well laid out. It will help you if you get stuck. It helps you find some of the bonuses in the game. I only use it when I get frustrated
More a hintbook than a Strategy Guide.......2005-10-06
The book was excellent but for those who have a PC would prefer the
X BOX hints also have hints for PC. The light was shining on those who had X BOX not a PC. It does not suggest any of the schools which makes it difficult for those who have trouble, lets say in driving school.
Good book!.......2005-08-19
I actually just found out that Bradygames released 2 books, (PS2, and XBOX + PC) for this game. This XBOX + PC Book is almost completely accurate in terms of where it says items or locations should be. Well, I should say that the maps in the "Odd Jobs" chapter are 100% accurate. The maps in the beginnings of the other chapters are -slightly- off (no idea why though), but if you like to explore in the GTA games, a rough location plus a description is all you need!
Lots of maps, Racing maps, weapon locations, actual mission descriptions + storyline, a huge "Odd Jobs" chapter explaining every THING you can do if you're not on a mission, sprays, camera shots, horseshoes, bike jumps (unique stunt bonuses), and oysters will keep you busy for a long time if you're after the 100% completion mark. In addition, the last 5 things I mentioned above have in-game pictures in case you just can't find it.
I recommend it. It makes a good addition to the game itself.
