5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction .......2007-07-08

Dr. Rohlf's text is a wonderful introduction and reference for anyone interested in understanding and applying the fundamentals of microeconomics. Rohlf provides real world discussion of what is usually presented as abstract. This text provides sound basics of strategy analysis.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Economic text which lacks important details........1999-10-15

I would reccomend this textbook for students or someone who is just begining economics. This book is for the most part easy to follow. It gives basic concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics. However, more pedagogy is needed in some chapters as well as with explanations.

    Book Description

Introduction to Engineering Ethics provides the background for discussion of the basic issues in engineering ethics. Emphasis is given to the moral problems engineers face in the corporate setting. It places those issues within a philosophical framework, and it seems to exhibit both their social importance and their intellectual challenge. The primary goal is to stimulate critical and responsible reflection on moral issues surrounding engineering practice and to provide the conceptual tools necessary for pursuing those issues.

As per new ABET 2000 guidelines, more and more introductory engineering courses cover engineering ethics as part of their instruction. Students preparing to function within the engineering profession need to be introduced to the basic issues in engineering ethics. This book places those issues within a wider philosophical framework than has been customary in the past and aims to stimulate critical and responsible reflection on the moral issues surrounding engineering practice and to provide the conceptual tools necessary for pursuing those issues.

    Book Description

When economists wrestle with issues such as unemployment, inflation, or budget deficits, they do so by incorporating an impersonal, detached mode of reasoning. But economists also analyze issues that, to others, do not typically fall within the realm of economic reasoning, such as organ transplants, cigarette addiction, smoking in public, and product safety. Trade-Offs is an introduction to the economic approach to analyzing these controversial public policy issues.

Harold Winter provides readers with the analytical tools needed to identify and understand the trade-offs associated with these topics. By considering both the costs and benefits of potential policy solutions, Winter stresses that real-world policy decision making is best served by an explicit recognition of as many trade-offs as possible.

Intellectually stimulating yet accessible and entertaining, Trade-Offs will be appreciated by students of economics, public policy, health administration, political science, and law, as well as by anyone who follows current social policy debates.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Short and sweet........2007-06-23

This no non-sense, straight to the point book demonstrates clearly that no solutions exist to any social situation. There are only trade-offs. I especially liked his argument that there may be too little smoking in the world.

Winter clearly understands that pleasure, life, and many other things do indeed have a dollar value associated with them. Ignoring this exposes you to a variety of logical flaws, leading to false or misleading solutions.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2006-07-27

    Excellent, EXCELLENT book.

Though, I beg to ask, why is it so short?

I started recommending this to students. And then told them not to waste their time with "Freakonomics".

    5 out of 5 stars Great text.......2006-05-23

For the past 6 months or so, I have been frantically searching for a text I can use for a second year policy econ course for non-majors. I'd found nothing that covered the range of topics I wanted or at the appropriate level. This text is perfect; I wish I'd found it before the uni bookstore's cut off date! Each chapter would have to be supplemented with additional readings to provide the appropriate depth, but the coverage is almost perfect for the kind of course I'm teaching. Strongly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff - and a good read.......2006-02-23

I like it! Economics made easy and fun, a la "Freakonomics."

3 out of 5 stars The economics of policy.......2006-02-09

'Trade-offs' is a good introduction to the economic analysis of policy, with a message clearly conveyed by its title: There are trade-offs for every (public) policy. Excellent for explaining economic analysis to people with little background in economics.

Disagree with the previous reviewer's comparison with Freakonomics: Though both are good, Freakonomics describes things that are at the frontier of current economic research (in an amazingly clear way). So, Freakonomics offers both clarity and novelty, while (at least for most people educated in economics), Trade-Offs mostly offers the former.

I would have given Trade-Offs a four star, but I think it is a bit too short for the money.

    Book Description

This high-school text is aimed at teaching the intelligent young reader how to think about economic problems in a manner consistent with the Austrian School tradition. Its chapters on action, preference, demand and supply, value theory, money, and price controls emphasize deductive logic, the market process, and the failures of government intervention. As the only text of its kind, it is engaging, funny, filled with examples, and never talks down to the student. It is perfect for homeschoolers, but every student, young or old, will benefit from it. Indeed, a student familiar with its contents will be fully prepared to see through the fallacies of the Economics 101 texts used at the college level. Includes a glossary and recommended readings.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A Sectarian View on Economics.......2005-05-29

As the author states in the introduction this book is written from the viewpoint of the Austrian School of economics. More precisely it follows the teachings of Ludwig von Mises. Von Mises based his economic theories on a single axiom: "Man acts to achieve an end." From this single axiom he drew all his consequences that led him to the conclusion that free market is not bound to a specific economic system but rooted in the very nature of man.

Von Mises himself might have done better, but David Gordon does not succeed in showing what should prevent men from achieving their ends by non-market means like for example enslaving other people. That is at least what people did for thousands of years. But observations like this would not be taken into consideration by Misesian economists: Von Mises based his economic theories entirely on deductive logic and viewed empirical facts as simply irrelevant. The reader should take into account that this book follows a sectarian approach which is rejected as methodically inadequate by mainstream economics as well as by other members of the Austrian School.

The autor is well versed in logic and writes a witty prose but he employed his abilities to write a right-wing propaganda pamphlet disguised as textbook. David Gordon makes out numerous enemies: Sociology, progressive schools, Hillary Clinton, trade unions, taxes, the New Deal, Minimum Wages, any kind of state intervention. The state is the villain anyway.

In its essence this book presents a cynical viewpoint. We learn for example that "the marginal sellers will exit the market". But what does it mean if a marginal seller of labor exits the market in a society without welfare system? Thomas Robert Malthus was the last economist that dared to be explicit about this point: "Exiting the market" means starving to death in this case.

David Gordon's promise is that in a completely deregulated marked there will be no unemployment. But will the sellers of labor also be able to make a living from their wages? David Gordon does not bother to answer this point but we can call the founder of the Austrian School to the rescue: Carl Menger stated in his Principles of economics (1871): "Experience also informs us that many labor services cannot be exchanged by the laborer even for the most necessary means of subsistence... In Berlin, a seamstress working 15 hours a day cannot earn what she needs for her subsistence. Her income covers food, shelter, and firewood, but even with the most strenuous industry she cannot earn enough for clothing."

5 out of 5 stars Good intro for a novice.......2003-05-28

This is a very good book for a high school economics 101 course. This book should be read by every high school student. The ideas are put forth in a very straight foward manner that is almost too easy to understand. If you have any knowledge about ecomomics, do not get this. You will be board with the concepts Gordon goes over.

5 out of 5 stars Basic Economics Made Easy.......2003-03-30

AN INTRODUCTION TO ECONOMIC REASONING is probably the first book you want to read if you are planning on studying economics. Although this work is called an introduction to "economic reasoning," it is perhaps more accurately considered an introduction to economics as such.

This book is quite basic, and could be profitably used by high school students or anyone without a knowledge of economics. It hits many of the basic topics in economics, such as marginal utility, supply and demand, and money. It is from the Austrian perspective, so it could save a high schooler from years of unlearning. The only drawback is that although it contains many useful study questions, it doesn't include the answers (nor is there, from what I can tell, a teacher's guide).

Dr. David Gordon is associated with the Ludwig von Mises Institute, the nation's premier free enterprise think tank. The Institute has published another work - ECONOMICS FOR REAL PEOPLE by Gene Callahan - that is more advanced and would make an excellent follow-up work.

5 out of 5 stars Did you always want to understand what economics was about.........2000-10-12

... but found nobody whom to ask?

This book is definitely the way out. It has everything a beginner's textbook is asking for. Witty writing, step-by-step explanations, practical examples. By the way you understand what is meant with concepts and theories economists use to explain to us why a certain policy should be pursued or abolished, like the labor theory of value, price controls, minimum wages, and different currency systems. And before you know you understand what is behind the arguments of current policy issues, what are the true and the false arguments, misleading paths, right or wrong theories behind them.

The author is not soft on the issues, but uses logical reasoning and explains in every step the possible fallacies. In the end - if one likes it or not - one has to follow his cogent conclusions about the way markets work in a free society and how government intervention affects those outcomes.

Robin Paul Malloy examines the way in which people experience the intersection of law, markets, and culture. He demonstrates the implications and the ambiguities of law in a market society through case examples, illustrative fact patterns, and problems based on hypothetical situations. His analysis provides a complete and accessible introduction to a vast array of economic terms, concepts, and ideas--making this book a valuable primer for anyone interested in understanding the use of market concepts in legal reasoning.

Topics examined include union representation, financial consequences of unionism, and wage determination, workplace innovation and conflict resolution in unionized enterprises in North America. Book Description

The colourful previous editions of the Geological Time Table have been immensely popular with scientists, students and teachers alike. The new and revised (fifth) edition furnishes practicing geoscientists, archaeologists, naturalists and Earth historians with a succinct source of reference to worldwide stratigraphic and chronostratigraphic nomenclature. The Table provides rapid access to numerical ages, not only of the stratigraphic subdivisions, but also to the ages of prominent mountain-building, paleoceanographic, paleoclimatolological and evolutionary events in Earth history.

The linear time scale has been thoroughly revised, taking into consideration recent developments in geochronology and radiochronology, especially for the Precambrian through Silurian interval where there have been major revisions in age dating. An attempt has been made to update all regional stratigraphic schemes based on the most recent information. The Table also lists major orogenic events and geomagnetic polarity reversal and seafloor magnetic anomaly records, where available. Major biotic events (first and last occurrences of major groups, as well as major extinctions), prominent geodynamic, oceanographic and geochemical events and glacial episodes of the Phanerozoic can also be found for rapid reference.

A series of paleogeographic maps (for circa 500, 400, 240, 170, 95, 60, 30, 15, and 4 million years B.P.) showing major geographic and oceanographic changes (opening/closing of seaways, circulation patterns, loci of upwelling and high productivity) are included as an educational tool. Glacial and Archaeological Classifications complete the utility of the chart for paleoclimatology and archaeology. An index is provided for quick and easy reference to the terms within the body of the Table.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest books of Hawaiian photography........1998-07-21

This is one of the finest books of Hawaiian photography, however, don't look for touristy types of photographs of famous places. The book shows water, earth, air and fire, Hawaiian style. The photographs are sublime and eternal. The book is quiet and unassuming, the photographs tell the story. There is a description of all the photographs in the back of the book that tells the details the photographer has focused on. These details are not immediately apparent or even noticed in the photographs on a first look-through, and make the book all the more interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book covering many moods of Hawaii........1998-05-21

I was amazed at the number of moods this book captures around the theme of light using ocean, sky, and lava. Each page evokes a different emotional response. A truely excellent collection.

                      5 out of 5 stars READ ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-30

This book is elementary reading(as stated in another review) but to someone that doesn't know a lot about these techniques, like myself, will find this book very informative indeed. This book involves rural and urban areas of infiltration technique. It involves countermeasures against detection. Gives you tactics on how to deceit the "guarding" dog and security personnel alike. It goes into everything from barbed wire fences to seismic detection cables ran under obstacles. How about foot stepping for stealth? Disappearing in shadows? Ingress and regress technique rules? Meditation techniques before the infiltration? YES! YES! YES! I am telling you this book is loaded with up-to-date tactics. I may be a beginner but I know a knowledgeable book when I read one. Detail is the ultimate success in this book. Easy reading and with practice, like everything else, easy learning!! GOING SOLO OR IN A TEAM. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Buy it! I honestly don't believe you will regret it. I am reading it for my 2nd. time through. There is also some history in it by the way to top it off. I hope you find this review helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Too much variance.......2006-12-19

The content in this book varied a great deal. Some of the information was presented and I began saying to myself, "Yes, that's true, and anyone who has interest in these things AND has common sense would see that" while some other information was incredibly interesting and certainly not your everyday type of knowledge.

I would agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the information was presented in an elementary way, but some of the information was fairly complex and should be read over a few times if the reader does not have an inclination to the detailed workings of the eye (one of the most interesting sections of the literature of the book). Again, there is variance, not only in the commonality of the informaiton (common sense vs. relatively unknown information), but the applicability of the information (some things could apply to anyone, anywhere at night and some would only apply if you were infiltrating an enemy base and a convoy was entering simultateously) AND the complexity of the information (some information could be understood easily by nearly anyone who could read the words themselves and other information requires prior knowledge to grasp well).

Finding a median somewhere would be helpful because the jumps in complexity etc did make the book much less useful and admirable than it could have been (as I'm confident Dr. Lung could make it). Nonetheless, I cannot ignore the useful information, which is why I give it the score I did.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of material covered.......2006-08-30

This is one of my favorite technical manuals I own. There are very few books I have found that focus on actual sneaking around. Instead of being like a military manual, it shows methods that even a single operator could utilize. Also focused on historical night fighters and time-tested methods, including ninja and middle eastern assassins. I'll have to admit the illustrations aren't that great, but they are adequate enough to get the point across. Unlike other books, you can tell that this one does not "hold back" information that some people would disagree against others being allowed to learn.

                      3 out of 5 stars QUestion.......2006-05-06

I was wondering what were some of the techniques, etc. for developing ur senses and other stuff. I want to know more in depth what this book says before I buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference for this topic...........2004-07-14

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.

I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.

Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."

I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."

In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to start with.......2007-06-10

Creating a graphic novel (or a comic book) is hard work. Getting someone to read it, other than friends or relatives, is an herculean task. This book is a good place to start, along with some fine books written by Scott McCloud.

I gave it only four stars because of the shallow treatment of so many themes, but that's natural, because of the wide spectrum of subjets that the comic form implies. And I sustracted a star because the writing style... well, tries too hard to be funny, and it gets annoying at times (insert a joke here!- Ed.)

                      5 out of 5 stars A good beginning........2007-03-25

Very well thought out and organized presentatation. It guides the artisist/novelist to-be effortlessly through every phase of graphic novel creation.
I truely enjoyed it and thought it was easy to understand even for those who are not familiar with comic book or printhouse jargon.
I highly recommend this guide as one of the best I have seen.

4 out of 5 stars Helps My Students Develop Their Writing.......2007-01-05

Graphic novels seem to be quite the hot ticket. While most traditional English teachers would scoff at this genre as a serious direction for students, I find my at-risk pupils captivated by the entire process. Graphic novels help me keep their focus...I don't have them read too many, but I try to get them to write for me in graphic novel form. Some of them are unbelievably gifted, and I want them to see this as a viable avenue for themselves. I have a group of 4-5 who fight over this book regularly.

5 out of 5 stars far from idiotic.......2006-08-01

I'm a long-time designer looking to do a web comic on the side and I picked this book up only partly because I was open to some new organizational ideas, but mostly because the gentleman writing it were so down to earth.

Their teaching method is very engaging, the advice very helpful and easy to understand, but what I found most helpful was the "you can do it" reassuring undertone it had.

I'm also a longtime attendee of comicon and found their "demostration purpose" con comic exerpt amusing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to express themselves through graphic novels. It's practical, filled with good advice and a ton of helpful references you might want to look up later as well.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful hand from heaven!!!.......2004-07-20

When i saw this title was about to be released I didn't believe it at first... But anyway... I put it on my wish list, before you can say ?idiot?

Not because of the popularity of graphic novels but because I thought that a series of books like this "Complete Idiot's Guide" usually cares about, raising puppies, understanding software or mechanics stuff... You know... Things that might be more appealing to the real world... To the average reader

But to dedicate a whole guide just to the creators or fans of graphic novels... Ummm, I don?t know... Sounds weird... But immensely cool at the same time!!!

Anyway, I bought it, I have it, I read it, I LOVE IT!

As comic creator, writer and graphic novel lover THIS IS A MUST HAVE!... But specially for those writers and art students beginners or expert... Is full of tips and great ideas, all written in a simple down to earth words

As an expert you will find a different point of view, which I think is always helpful, as I never get tired of seeing other peoples works.. And as I believe there?s always something new to learn... In every book... Without exception

Specially coming for this guys, Nat Gertler and Steve Leiber... They not only explain but sparks your imagination with a wonderful sense of humor and tons of creative examples... You will find yourself not only laughing in every page but feeling those creative butterflies in your stomach, while you feel you are ?talking? with people that understand your ideas, love and passion for writing and creating a graphic novel

This is a book that goes directly to the subject... Directly to the thing you want the most... LEARN FROM THE PRO?S

So... I recommend this one with my eyes closed, not only if you are an idiot, but if you believe that there?s always something new to learn...

Get this one if you write graphic novel, if you love graphic novel, if you only read graphic novel, or if you only want to be... Less idiot... Like me
