Book Description
This book presents the econometric analysis of single-equation and simultaneous-equation models in which the jointly dependent variables can be continuous, categorical, or truncated. Despite the traditional emphasis on continuous variables in econometrics, many of the economic variables encountered in practice are categorical (those for which a suitable category can be found but where no actual measurement exists) or truncated (those that can be observed only in certain ranges). Such variables are involved, for example, in models of occupational choice, choice of tenure in housing, and choice of type of schooling. Models with regulated prices and rationing, and models for program evaluation, also represent areas of application for the techniques presented by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but are you REALLY sure you need this?.......2005-02-03
This book surely is a classic treatment of limited dependent variable models. However, I suspect most researchers, and definitely almost all graduate stduents will NOT need this book.
1) First, it is VERY outdated. Note that this book has been written in 1983. That is more than *20* years ago. There is nothing here on nonpametric and semiparametric models, which are becoming the standard in this field. For this, a good reference would be Pagan and Ullah, which also contain results for nonparametric and semiparametric general density and regression estimation. The fact that this book is outdated not only means that lots and lots of important tools are not covered here, but it also means that it covers many results and estimators that are no longer considered important.
2) Second, and especially if you are a graduate student, all or almost all the results you will need for your courses is covered very well in textbooks that also cover a wealth of other materials (such as Wooldridge, Amemiya, Ruud, Davidson and McKinnon etc.).
So, overall, do not buy this book simply because it's in your syllabus. Have a look at it first in a library, and then decide if you really need it. But chances are that you won't. The book still deserved 5 stars for what it meant when it was first published.
the best of it's kind.......2004-05-25
in microeconometrics methods is one of the best books one could have. to acomplish this book you need another in panel data, like for example cheng hsiao's book. With this two books you have all you need to work in microeconometrics
good book, useless index.......2000-07-26
the biggest problem with this book is the poor index. it is pretty much only by author, with almost no subject listings. other than that this is one of the best guides to applied econometrics that i have seen.
A Classic.......1999-08-03
This book is a classic, having educated generations of Economists on how to do micro-econometrics. But, published in 1983, it is rather out of date and crying out for a new edition.
For Probit and Tobit Regressions....This is the book to have.......1998-08-04
Any graduate student must have this book on his shleves...Maddala explains probit, logit, tobit regressions very clearly....Examples are concrete and based on daily problems....A must have!!!

Book Description
The book provides a simple, intuitive introduction to regression models for qualitative and discrete dependent variables, to sample selection models, and to event history models, all in the context of maximum likelihood estimation. It presents a wide range of commonly used models. The book thereby enables the reader to become a critical consumer of current empirical social science research and to conduct own empirical analyses. The book includes numerous examples, illustrations, and exercises. It can be used as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate, a Master`s or a first-year Ph.D. course in microdata analysis, and as a reference for practitioners and researchers.

Book Description
In the late 1960s, Eliot Wigginton and his students created the magazine Foxfire in an effort to record and preserve the traditional folk culture of the Southern Appalachians. This is the original book compilation of Foxfire material which introduces Aunt Arie and her contemporaries and includes log cabin building, hog dressing, snake lore, mountain crafts and food, and "other affairs of plain living."
Customer Reviews:
Reliving the Past.......2007-09-04
If you are interested in learning how our forefathers lived without the modern day conveniences that we enjoy today, this book is a must read. You will learn how they survived without much income and you could learn something beneficial that you never knew.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THIS GENRE.......2007-03-26
The Foxfire books are a wonderful thing and we are so lucky to have them. Many of the ways, crafts, planting lore, animal lore, and as the book says "affairs of plain living" are preserved here. This particular volume includes different wood and it's uses, Mountain Recipes, Slaughtering Hogs, weather signs faith healing and so very, very much more. this is a wonderful recording of life the way it was and probably never will be again. The book is quite well written and has faithfully recorded even the dialect of these wonderful people, from which so many of us sprung. That is a big part of the charm of these works. This book includes actual interviews with folks from that region of the country which I am sure are long dead now. Their knowledge would be completely lost without works such as this. Another generation or two and it will all be completely gone. Thank goodness we have recordings such as this. Recommend this one highly.
NO IDEA what they're saying.......2007-01-18
I heard about this book and thought, "OH I'm from the South and this book will be lovely to read to find out about how things used to be." And I would probably have been right if I could have made out what they were talking about. The slang is much too thick for me. I'm not sure anyone could understand it except people who actually are from this region. Thumbs down for no translation.
buy it and use it.......2006-06-18
Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.
An incredible resource of "oldtimer" wisdom.......2006-04-15
I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).
I rate this book right up there with Carla Emery's books, as a great resource for folks trying to get back to a more self-sufficient way of life and providing for themselves, their families, and even friends & neighbours. These books definitely give a sense of old-fashioned camaraderie and willingness to help your neighbour in time of need (and in times of plenty).

Customer Reviews:
Craig's best book.......2004-11-05
Well laid out and informative. Unlike other reviewers I really liked the illustrations. They are simple, but easy to understand and more than adequate to reinforce the commentary. This fascinating book covers everything from understanding the terminology to selecting and purchasing a sword, to caring for your weapon, to etiquette, to technique. It even shows how to fold your uniform. I especially enjoyed the historical vignettes scattered throughout. The section on sword testing was also captivating. If you want a solid education in the fundamentals of iaido this is an excellent resource. It is not really aimed at advanced practitioners but is well written for beginners and intermediate students. I learned a lot from this excellent tome.
Lawrence Kane
Author of Surviving Armed Assaults, The Way of Kata, and Martial Arts Instruction
Oldie, but goodie.......2004-08-02
I say "oldie" because the All Japan Kendo Federation has added several new kata to its regimen since the book was published. But the description "goodie" still fits! There's a bit of something for everyone in this book: stories, history, philosophy, and practical tips.
As always, I'm grateful for the many thoughtful reviews here on Amazon. I'm surprised, however, that so many folks think a BOOK is the way to learn any martial art, especially a traditional one like iaido. If you're serious about learning iai (and not just reading about it), find a qualified, respected instructor and practice, practice, practice. Then buy this book as a supplement to your education.
Good as an introduction.......2003-11-30
I happened to buy this book amongst others as I have an interest in the history of Japanese swordsmanship and Iai.
I found this book helpful in terms of history, sword-testing and nomenclature; though I found the drawings a big 'sketchy' at best. For reading purposes this is a good book, with plenty to keep it interesting... but if you want to know more on the practical side of the art of drawing the blade I'd suggest "Flashing Steel" by Shimabukuro instead. It uses photographs in illustrating points and offers better descriptions in its' instruction.
Very helpful and informative.......2002-11-18
I have all of Shihan Craig's books, except for 1 that was out of print before I started reading his works. He is a uniquely qualified and highly regarded martial arts instructor and historian. I found this to book to be quite helpful. I bought it before starting Iaido when I just wanted to read his books. Now that I train in Iaido I use it as a reference.
Not fond..........2002-08-04
Iai: The Art of Drawing the Sword is good as a refresher, at best. Craig opens his tome with some personal history and stories, which is a fine method of doing things, until he brings his own opinion into it. He gives the impression that spiritualism should account for most everything in iaido; as most practitioners are aware, spiritualism is only one aspect, and technique is equally or more important.
Throughout the book, Craig provides small interludes detailing Japanese history, and other information, some of which is accurate, some of which is very much exaggerated, and some of which is not true. While the thought was nice, he should have researched his facts more.
The drawings accompanying his descriptions of the kata are sketchy and vague; a beginner would have difficulty following them, although someone with grounding in another Japanese sword art such as kenjitsu may have better luck. However, with knowledge of the kata, or at least of the mechanics of the motions, a reader would find this book a helpful reminder, as long as he does not try to base his study entirely on this book.
Overall, this is not a terrible book, but there are much better on the subject, with regards to technique, illustration, and history.

You gotta love a grammar guide that calls verbs "moody little suckers" and adverbs "promiscuous." Constance Hale (Wired Style) relishes prose that is deliberate, beautiful, and bold. Go ahead and break the rules, she says; just know the rules first, and know why you are breaking them. In Sin & Syntax, Hale examines the elements of grammar from four angles: the "bones" (the grammar lesson), the "flesh" (the writing lesson), "cardinal sins" (what she calls "true transgressions"), and "carnal pleasures" (the beauty that results from either "hew[ing] exquisitely to the underlying codes of language," or not).
For illustration, Hale hails Walt Whitman and Roger Angell, and rails upon Alexander Haig and the Gump's catalogue. She hauls in Joan Didion to make a case for writing in the first person, Mark Twain to promote the killing of adjectives, C.S. Lewis to advocate showing rather than telling, and Loudon Wainwright III to lament the abuse of the word like. But Hale has no problem making her own points. "Euphemisms," she says, "are for wimps." She dismisses a particularly heinous example of scholarly prose as "a bunch of big words thrown into an Osterizer." Even other grammarians don't escape her derision: "Get a grip," Hale says. "Hopefully as a sentence adverb is here to stay." But what distinguishes Sin and Syntax most is its enthusiasm for prose that takes risks. "Even if you have to check with a lawyer," says Hale, "isn't a kick-ass piece of writing worth the effort?" --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Today’s writers need more spunk than Strunk: whether it's the Great American e-mail, Madison Avenue advertising, or Grammy Award-winning rap lyrics, memorable writing must jump off the page. Copy veteran Constance Hale is on a mission to make creative communication, both the lyrical and the unlawful, an option for everyone.
With its crisp, witty tone,
Sin and Syntax covers grammar’s ground rules while revealing countless unconventional syntax secrets (such as how to use—Gasp!—interjections or when to pepper your prose with slang) that make for sinfully good writing. Discover how to:
*Distinguish between words that are “pearls” and words that are “potatoes”
* Avoid “couch potato thinking” and “commitment phobia” when choosing verbs
* Use literary devices such as onomatopoeia, alliteration, and metaphor (and understand what you're doing)
Everyone needs to know how to write stylish prose—students, professionals, and seasoned writers alike. Whether you’re writing to sell, shock, or just sing,
Sin and Syntax is the guide you need to improve your command of the English language.
Customer Reviews:
good advice.......2007-08-31
this book is full of fundamental ideas that are always good to remember as well as practical ideas and examples.
i look forward to having it alongside me whenever i am writing.
Buy only if you want to write well.......2007-05-17
I would have quit trying to improve Chapter One if it weren't for Sin and Syntax by Constance Hale. When I get to the point I think my writing is good, is done, I bring it out and start reading it.
What she says in the Relish Every Word section reminds me what I need to look at in the writing.
The examples she gives in the Be Simple, But Go Deep section always strikes a cord about some sentence or phrase.
Take Risks builds the strength into my writing, Seek Beauty adds the poetic. Find the Right Pitch gets me polishing the atmosphere and speed of action.
All that before her Chapter One.
It's not the information that she gives, but how she gives it. Clearly, she practices what she writes.
worth each star, and every penny paid........2006-08-11
I'd read other reviews prior to purchasing this book; and will admit to having some misgivings. Having since received and read the book, the doubts I once entertained have gotten their coats and left the party. Her writing style does not detract from her subject matter, the samples given of what she would like her readers to understand are fascinating; altogether making this book a worthy read, and a good source for a person to have on hand.
grammar and style humorously demystified.......2004-08-31
Hale gives us a guide to grammar and style that is as fun to read as it is instructive. Occasionally the mirth is a bit strained and tiresome, but better to err on the side of entertainment ....
Divided into chapters on words (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections), sentences (subject and predicate, simple sentences, phrases and clauses, and sentence variety) and music (voice, lyricism, melody and rhythm), each chapter is divided into four sections: Bones -- the basics of grammatical usage; Flesh -- putting the grammar into context; Cardinal Sins -- highlighting errors; and Carnal Pleasures -- examples of writing that defy the rules.
The organization is mainly successful and the author uses lots of examples to show both good and bad writing. i learned from the book, re-learned a few things I'd forgotten (when's the last time you saw a sentence diagram?!), and enjoyed the book.
A Good Book.......2004-07-09
This is a good book. I learned a lot. My writing style is better.

Subtle, thought-provoking, and yes, educational.......2005-08-30
I read this book on my own in elementary school, as a straight fantasy, and barely realized the main character was black because I identified with him so much and so closely.
I read it again in high school, and was struck by the use of a black hero to break down stereotypes, and also by the fact that Walter Dean Myers seemed to use some Spanish words in his "fantasy" landscape.
In COLLEGE I read this book after taking a course on the epics of medieval Spain and hit myself on the forehead. NOTHING in the setting is fantastic (although some of the story is). Alkebu-lan, the silent gold traders, and the Spaniards across the water, are ALL historical. What Myers has done is a brilliant reversal of the story of El Cid and the "reconquista" stories of Spain. More than that, "Tarik" is a form of "Tariq." The place where he landed is known to this day as "Tarik's Rock" - "Jeb-el-Tariq" - better known as Gibraltar.
Hats off to Walter Dean Myers for creating an amazing "fantasy" world, which is also absolutely grounded in real geography and history. Never mind that Stria is one of the most haunting characters I have met, and that Nongo and Docao and Capa with his "fat wife" move me to tears. A brilliant, brilliant, underrated book. Why isn't it easier to find?
A great book!.......2004-09-26
This was a favourite book of mine when I was about eleven. I read it a few times I believe. It's the story of a young man, orphaned and left behind with a great destiny. And there were a number of things he had to learn before he could defeat the villain. Ultimately he had to learn how to be a master of himself. When I was young, the character appealed to me very much and I somewhat aspired to be like him. I would like to read it again now, if I can find it one of these days. Enjoy! I strongly reccomend it! :)
Awful.......2002-05-29
this book is awful, if you bought it you are a weinerschnitzel.
A good book to get young readers interested..........2001-02-06
This book intrigued me when I was in a used bookstore and read the cover. It stated, "Tarik is as valiant as King Arthur and as brave as Luke Skywalker". Well, that made me laugh, and the cover was typical of YA fantasy with its noble knight riding a warhorse. So, just for chucks (read Stephen King's IT, to understand that reference) I bought it. Well, the book surprised me because the hero was a young black man. I was not expecting this in the least. I think that the plot is simple enough for anyone above the age of eleven to comprehend, and it is exciting enough to keep anyone interested. I suggest this book to anyone who is wanting to get youths to read. Also, since the character is a Black, it exposes children to new views. I am sure that most kids think of heroes in books as white, but this book breaks down that barrier.
Classroom reading.......2000-12-10
I have read it in the classroom with my other 7th grade students. This book was a simple outline with great detail, but I have not learned anything from this book, nor did I think it was extremely suspensful. To any reader, I suggest you take a peek. To a younger reader, pulling out a cyclop's eye, getting your father killed, might be a tad bit too... "creepy" maybe?
