I liked this text and might adopt it for my classes. Economics is not an easy subject but Prof. McEachern's text is clearly written. The end of chapter summary of key ideas help to clarify what the chapter was about. The problems and exercises are rigorous, but within reach of anyone who has had algebra.
The case studies bring a real world aspect to the material.

This book is terrible. The author is for one thing extremely dull. Worst though is the questions he expects you to answer at the end of most chapters. The examples he gives while reading the chapter are totally different from the questions he asks at the end of the chapters. As a result of this you are left asking yourself, when the hell did we do this?????? To make matters worse their is no answer key to any of this, so even if you attempt to answer the questions, you will never even know if you did them right or not! Stay away from this book if possible, take a teacher who uses another book, because this book is very poor. In my class, probably half dropped because of this!

This book is just wonderful because while you read it, the author gives you illustrative examples whereby you understand general policies and ideologies within the economy. It is just a five and odd star winner!!

The book arrived quickly. There are two books with the same title by this author. One is a study guide and the other is the text. A Comprehensive Introduction.......2002-01-27
A must buy for the personal library of any future economics major. While most economics textbooks are dubbed as "dry" and "incomprehensible," this text fully acquaints the reader with fundamental economic principles in English that is clear and simple to understand, all the while maintaining the importance of the concepts. Despite the fact that McEachern does not explore (in any depth) the complex mathematical facet of economics, he covers well the basic theories of supply and demand, the market system, and the fundamental principles of both micro and macro economics. The graphs and other visual displays are clear and can be followed by anyone with a firm background in basic algebra.
Even though some very important concepts are simply "grazed" at the mere tip of the iceberg, this nonetheless functions relatively well with the book's overall intent to provide the reader with a firm knowledge of basic concepts. While this particular text wouldn't be used in the curriculum for an advanced seminar in economics, it would perform well as the "lay terms" manual for students that can't make heads or tails of the algorithms and complex functions and language of their college text.
All in all, McEachern's ECONOMICS: A CONTEMPORARY INTRODUCTION is a must-have for any and all future business, political science, and certainly economics majors.

This is a very solidly written and clearly presented book on both the techniques and the mindset of the knife fighter. It does not baby the reader, but instead presents the mechanics of the knife fight in a way that can help you win. I got this when it came out and wore out the copy. Now I'm well on my way to wearing out my next copy.
An Important Wake Up Call.......2005-10-07
This concise tome is an important wake-up call for all the wanna be duelists out there, an important reality check that blows through the dangerous myths typically associated with knife fighting. The term fight implies a rule-based contest yet the reality is that there is no fight, at least not in the traditional sense. Assassination attempt might be a better description. I've survived a couple of knife encounters over the years and can tell you first hand that they are nothing like you see in the movies or on TV. The author provides a direct, no-nonsense explanation of the mindset, tactics, and simple techniques to use in an edged-weapons confrontation. Contents include the basics of knife fighting, knife fighting myths, knife attack, knife defense, and training. The information imparts some critical information for your survival but is way too short to be considered complete. Regardless, if you want to know the reality of knives this is a great place to start.

Concise and almost practical.......2005-05-13
The book is about knife fighting defense and offense, written by a REAL knife fighter who has fought "for real" inside Folsom Prison. Fortunately, the (fighter) author does not waste ink, paper, or time describing his heroic/cowardly actions inside the prison. He portrays an almost pragmatic, mostly a one on one offensive and defensive, knife fighting techniques. He presents everything practically, in my opinion. He also points out why the movie heroes come victorious in a knife fight. He also talks (writes) about the mental factor in a fight. The techniques are uncomplicated and thus easy to grasp. The authors tone is direct and brutal.
The only reason this book earned a five minus one star is because he raped eastern-origin based martial arts. I somewhat agree with the author that predetermined movements, as taught in eastern-origin martial arts, may not save your life. And the assurances of the martial art expert may go down the drain in real (street, alley) fights. The author almost wasted two pages raping martial arts. Taken granted that martial arts alone is not the ultimate savior, did he not realize martial arts helps you with your flexibility, strength, and self-confidence. All these elements must be in the armory of a real fighter.
Some of the lessons learnt from the book: be brutal, don't panic, trash martial arts skills (?), don't follow movie stunts, first hit then stab, assassinate fear and hesitance, mind is the most lethal weapon and vulnerable part of you (my modifications of the author's view)...

Knife fighting in reality is not a duel. No matter what your black belt master told you. The punk won't help your wristlock to work. Nor should you give an adversary a chance to defend himself, if you are in a life or death scenario, and all you have is a shank. A contemporary classic.

When darkness falls, storms rage, fog settles, or lights fail, pilots are forced to make "instrument landings," relying on technology and training to guide them through typically the most dangerous part of any flight. In this original study, Erik M. Conway recounts one of the most important stories in aviation history: the evolution of aircraft landing aids that make landing safe and routine in almost all weather conditions. Discussing technologies such as the Loth leader-cable system, the American National Bureau of Standards system, and, its descendants, the Instrument Landing System, the MIT-Army-Sperry Gyroscope microwave blind landing system, and the MIT Radiation Lab's radar-based Ground Controlled Approach system, Conway interweaves technological change, training innovation, and pilots' experiences to examine the evolution of blind landing technologies. He shows how systems originally intended to produce routine, all-weather blind landings gradually developed into routine instrument-guided approaches. Even so, after two decades of development and experience, pilots still did not want to place the most critical phase of flight, the landing, entirely in technology's invisible hand. By the end of World War II, the very concept of landing blind therefore had disappeared from the trade literature, a victim of human limitations.

The Politics of Safety.......2007-05-17
This book gives a detailed account of the history and long, long, evolution of the instrument landing system in use today. I would not call this a literary work; it does not read with a building sense of tension or excitement like a novel, though it could. The nature of the subject itself for any reader that is a pilot, high-mileage airline passenger, or aviation aficionado will fill in the suspense left out in the factual recounting of events.
The goal of the participants from the very beginning was to achieve `blind landings'; to have the aircraft wheels literally touch the ground without the aid of any visual cues outside of the cockpit (thus the title of the book). A goal that remains, even in today's computer driven world.
What IS amazing is the amount and sometimes the pace of the system's evolution that was dependent all too often on purely political or business decisions; not science, and not technology, as an outsider would presume. This is not always the story of science, government, and business working together to solve a common problem, though it did occur. The airlines, driven by the need to fill vacant seats and make a profit, pushed (and paid for themselves, in some cases) for adoption of any system that would improve the opportunity for a scheduled flight to reach its destination in inclement weather, even if that improvement was only incremental.
Conway is to be applauded for the amount of history he has been able to amass, particularly on the early efforts towards this goal, and his extremely methodical and meticulous discussion.

Bold, Honest and Horrific.......2006-02-23
Keenan takes the reader from the heady, exciting, politically influenced atmosphere of Belfast during the troubles to the not too disimilar atmosphere of Beirut. While I do not wish to demean Belfast, it is a city where you need to be careful and on your guard. I know, I have been there many times. (For the love of a beautiful Irish girl, I met on holiday many years ago.)
Keenan relaxes a little bit too much one day and finds himself kidnapped by a fundamentalist group who by all accounts, don't really know what it is they actually wish to demand, and who it is they wish to demand it from.
So you find yourself turning page after page (rather quickly) wondering when the hell the poor man is going to be released.
A wonderful frank, vulgar, blunt, violent account of a horror, none of us mere mortals could ever imagine.

Bland.......2007-10-09
I thought it would be interesting to read a Christian SF book, but this one is very weak in both science and religion. It brings up an interesting issue (the possible conflict between creationism and extra-terrestrial life), but fails to deal with it seriously. I was left wondering if the authors had decided not to step on any toes. The result is a very bland book.
One of my favorite novels - ever!.......2007-05-13
I have to admit, I picked this one up at a writer's conference after hearing Mr. Ingermanson teach his Fiction 101 course, and I didn't exactly know what to expect. Science fiction novels can be hit or miss, at least for me. But Mr. Ingermanson did seem quite knowledgable on how to write a good novel, so without allowing my hopes to get too high, I decided to try this one.
A few days later, I found myself completely engrossed, not just in the story, but in the characters too. To tell you the honest truth, A FULL WEEK after I had finished Oxygen, I was still thinking about these characters, and what they might be doing, now that the story was over. I can't remember another novel that did that to me, so this has to be right up there at the top of my list of favorite novels.
If you like good suspense novels with compelling characters, get this one!
One of the best books I have ever read!!!.......2007-04-09
This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read, and it is surpassed only by a few not only in Christian fiction, but also throughout many other genres. It has the perfect blend of mystery, suspense, science fiction, christianity, and romance. I have not found a book to equal it in this regard. If you are looking for a good, clean, interesting book, you should definitely give a thought to picking this one up. This is one of the books that I recommend to anyone looking for something to read, so enjoy.

Well-Researched and Crafted Novel.......2007-03-04
Oxygen is a well-researched and crafted, near future, Christian science fiction novel. Published in 2001, the story is set in 2014 during the first manned mission to Mars. Microbial ecologist Valkerie Jansen is assigned to the Ares 10 as late replacement. This alone would cause strain for the crew but her faith adds another level of tension. When a near catastrophic explosion occurs the crew of two men and two women must learn to trust each other or perish in the cold of space. While I pray that the first mission to Mars does not have problems if it does I hope they have someone as resourceful as Valkerie. I also hope they never become as paranoid as this crew becomes.
All too often Christian fiction is second-rate fiction but this is not the case with John Olson and Randall Ingermanson. This is excellent science fiction. Historical details and NASA jargon are sprinkled into the story along with technical details about the spacecraft and spaceflight. These realistic fine points make the story much more compelling.
The best fiction writers present their stories through setting, action, thoughts, and description. Many Science Fiction stories suffer from lengthy paragraphs of telling. While Oxygen does have some telling, much of the story is told through dialogue or shown through actions.
As a Christian and a lifetime reader of Science Fiction, I recommend Oxygen to fans of the genre.
