Book Description
This book represents a major step towards a truly holistic landscape history. It takes as its theme the management of water in the agricultural landscape and brings together approaches of scientists on the one side and economic historians and archaeologists on the other. In each of the main sections an ecologist, soil scientist or hydrologist begins by setting out the scientific dynamics of each system. The archaeologists and historians then reassess the historical evidence for water management since the Roman period. The result is an important reinterpretation of some of the key questions in British landscape development. Throughout the writers investigate the implications of their findings for current conservation practice and for the management of historic landscapes.

Book Description
The alien, cratered landscape of our nearest celestial neighbor, the Moon. The twirling spiral arms of a remote galaxy glittering from the combined light of 50 billion stars. The rolling multi-hued cloud bands of Jupiter. These impressive wonders of the universe have been captured by the cameras of talented amateur astronomers and the Hubble Space Telescope and are presented here in brilliant high-resolution color. This 12-image collection was compiled by stargazing authority Terence Dickinson, author of NightWatch, who brings a wealth of practical experience to the calendar's daily diary of predicted celestial events, ranging from meteor showers to eclipses.

With Russell Croman around, why do we need Hubble?.......2004-11-20
If you closely study Russell's incredible Eagle Nebula image you will quickly wonder why we need to be funding the Hubble Telescope! The images in his calendar are all breathtaking, well worth the purchase price. These are REAL objects in the sky, detailed and interesting enough to make you ponder your own existence on our tiny planet.
The image quality is incredible, in many respects better than the best astronomical calendars produced by the largest observatories of years past. None of Russell's images have been enlarged beyond their useful resolution, and all are presented in full color. If you are an astronomy fan then you might also appreciate a more detailed inspection of his images- For example you will not find any artificial satellite "streaking", which so plagued long exposure chemical film astro-images of years ago. Russell has cleverly managed to acquire and process digital data obtained from his own modest backyard observatory into some of the finest astronomical images available today.
On the downside, I think Russell could use some help in his marketing department! Here are some details that you will want to know about the calendar:
- The month of December 2004 is an added bonus, so you can start using the calendar before January 2005
- High quality stiff paper is used throughout, with each image about 9 x 12 inches, a good size wall calendar
- Spiral bound pages
- Significant astronomical events throughout the year are documented each month
- A description of the "picture of the month" is explained by Russell, enhancing the experience, especially for those with little or no astronomical background.
- The monthly pictures can be found at Russell's web site: www.rc-astro.com
- My calendar was shipped very quickly, and was well packaged.

Stories about wild animals that have managed to adapt to living in cities.
Book Description
Whether watching from a courtside seat or from the luxury of a living room couch, sports fans want to know exactly what's going on in between those two hoops-from what the players are thinking, to why fouls are called, to anticipating what the players are going to do before they actually do it. And there is no better man to explain the ins and outs of America's hottest sport than the Knicks' former star guard, Walt Frazier. In his inimitable voice and style, "Clyde" turns it on as he describes the basics basketball in simple terms anyone can understand, and clues readers into what makes stars such as Michael Jordan so invincible. Includes exciting action photos and a wealth of "Clyde's Chalk Talk," "Clyde's Record Book," and "Clyde's Tips" sidebars.

"Irreverent in approach, these guides include tips and advice from leading authoritimes, aiming to help with life's big decisions and challenges, as well as hobbies. This book should help readers how to watch and understand basketball. "
Customer Reviews:
Probably the complete introduction to basketball.......2004-01-18
The author intends and succeeds to introduce basketball fans of all ages to the beauty of basketball.
No matter you are 12 or 70, this book helps you understand fully what the game is, teaches you about the history of the american basketball, gives you precious info about positions, different leagues, how to watch a game, famous players, network, newspapers and web sites.
It may be not an interesting book if you bought it for scrimmages and other technical info, but I don't think that was the purpose of the book. It's just a brilliant introduction to the basketball game.
Don't buy any other basketball book before reading this one "court to court". It pays you off.
I highly recommend it to basketball lover.
Don't Buy this Book.......2002-08-12
Buy Basketball for Dummies instead.
In search of a book which would get me up to speed about a sport which I had never played but which my sons have become increasingly passionate about, I bought and read both. You would be and idiot to buy The Complete Idiot's Guide to Basketball.
The author appears to be more preoccupied with telling you how wonderful he and the players of his (long bygone) era were. The references to today's players are painfully few. His snipping asides against the work ethic of today's players should have no space in a book of this sort; it serves only to make him sound whinny. His writing is practically devoid of humour and his descriptions of plays and strategies are fairly tedious. The game just does not come alive under his pen. Had I been an absolute newcommer to the sport when I read this book, I would have encouraged my boys to take up more exciting sports like synchronised swimming. FOrtunately, I had watched several live and taped games and had my children's interest to help me realise that there was much more to basketball than I could find in the pages of this book.
Try again Mr. Frazier
a great book.......2000-02-14
this book is a must for folks that respect the basics of Basketball.and who better to show&tell than one of the Greatest players of All-Time in Walt Clyde'Frazier.he was a great defensive player&scorer.also he knows that Wilt Chamberlin was the Greatest Player ever.he breaks everything down.
Clyde covers the basics entertainingly and understandably........1999-03-21
Classy Clyde Frazier covers the fundamentals of basketball: the vocabulary, the role of each position, the basics of offense and defense, and a few common set plays. His writing is fun to read if a bit dumbed-down (hence the title). He draws examples largely from his playing days, but knows well and comments aptly on players of all eras. He draws the distinctions between college and pro ball and includes women's and high school ball, but properly focuses primarily on the NBA, where the game is played at its highest level. He shows you what to focus on when you watch a game and demonstrates how each player's skills come into play in the course of offense and defense. This book will enhance the novice's appreciation for and enjoyment of the game; from what I have read of Digger Phelps' "Basketball for Dummies," I'm glad I read Clyde's book instead.

Book Description
Professional basketball began in 1896 in New York City. But it wasn't until fifty years ago with the formation of the NBA, that the sport really started to become popular. In 1968, the NBA's attendance average was just over 6,000 fans per game, now attendance has nearly tripled with an average about 18,000 fans per game.
Covers the rich and colorful history of the NBA, from its beginnings as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and it's merger with the ABA to today's hottest players and teams.
Includes team-by-team profiles, a look at the greatest players and coaches of all time, a look back at various finals and team dynasties, and highlights from All-Star games and other great moments in basketball.
Provides a reasonably priced, comprehensive and historical league overview.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and Interesting.......2003-05-12
What a great book! Too many of the Idiot's Guides seem to be, well, for idiot's. This book was well written, fun, full of cool facts, and lots of inside stuff too. I know a bit about basketball and still found things and stories in there I never knew. It would be a great present for a child, a girlfriend, or a buddy just getting into the NBA. Another good thing is that most NBA books are very expensive ($50), but this is very reasonable priced in comparison.
Book Description
Here's the guide for current and prospective coaches that covers every aspect of effectively coaching youth basketball: teaching good sportsmanship, running an effective practice, coaching to a player's age and skill level, teaching offensive and defensive skills and drills, rules of the game, executing winning plays and strategies, dealing with parents.
Customer Reviews:
Good book; a bit wordy.......2006-02-23
"Complete Idiot" may be off-putting to some, but this book does cover a lot about coaching children, and basketball. It is especially helpful to those that lack experience working with kids' teams. I found it a little light on comprehensive basketball basics, but the history was interesting. Haven't checked out completing books, so I don't know how it compares to others in the marketplace.

Learn to listen for the ideal name!
The Perfect Baby Name is the first book of its kind-providing parents with a creative approach to selecting first and middle names that sound good with readers' surnames. A good combination of names is pleasing to the ear, easy to remember, and can help a child be popular and successful in life.
Utilizing the techniques found in poetry and phonetics, parents will discover how to examine a surname by the sum of its parts-and match it with the perfect first name. With this unique new method, parents can choose the baby name that everyone is looking for: the perfect one!
Here's how it works with the surname Green:
Break down the sounds: G, R, long E, and N. These are the four different sounds (or phonemes) in that name. Now refer to those four different lists in the back of the book.
The G list has names like Hugo and Morgan...
The R list has Rex and Aurora...
The E (long) list, Eli and Alicia...
The N list, Nathaniel and Lindy...
All of these names sound good with the surname Green, so now it's just a matter of personal preference. Readers can scan the lists for the name they like best and choose the perfect match!
Customer Reviews:
If you buy one baby name book -this is it!! .......2007-03-31
With all the on-line resources finding a baby name was soooo overwhelming. This book broke down into simple guidelines what makes a name sound good with your last name -or at least sound better than other names. You don't need an alliteration -Jennifer Aniston was one example. I started going through the guidelines and found that almost all of my friends and family had followed these rules/guidelines without knowing them. It was a great way to help us wade through the tons of names out there!!
Something to think about.......2007-02-13
Although we didn't end up choosing a name directly from the book, the book helped point out a few things to think about while selecting a name. It gave great lists of names for specific sounds that we might have been going for. I thought it was useful, and we bought it for naming our second child which was definitely harder for us.
Not impressed.......2006-09-01
I was unable to read this book past her premise- make sure there is alliteration in your baby's name. What? I don't think that alliteration is necessary to make a nice sounding name, Whitney Walker! I guess it is nice to be memorable but frankly, I am more concerned about the cadence of a name (and how it flows with the last name) and the "feel" of a name than alliteration. Scrap this book and try The Baby Name Wizard by Laura Wattenberg first.
Not quite what I expected.......2006-02-23
This book was good...in that I understood her point. Some names just roll off your tongue and others you stumble over. But I found the endless lists hard to follow after a while. I guess I was expecting a more detailed formula and not just sounding out my own last name.
WAY TOO COMPLICATED!!.......2006-01-31
I guess the other people who reviewed this book paid far more attention in English class than I did. I find this book's instructions difficult and time consuming. It seems like you have to do an awful lot of work on the different sounds, syllables and stresses in your last name before you can begin to look for a first name. Then comes trying to find a middle name that fits into the phonetics and poetry rules the book tells you to follow. WAY TO DIFFICULT! Just give me an old fashioned baby name book any day.
Book Description
Rachael Ray is a household name and a best-selling author, thanks to her simply fabulous recipes, free-hand style of cooking, and unfailing good results. This latest collection of recipes, a companion book to her show, will feature flexible menus for cooking great meals 24/7.
Customer Reviews:
Cowboy burgers suck.......2007-10-01
The only reciepe I've made from this book was the Cowboy turkey burgers. It was awful, it ended up being a stir fry and I just ate the "burgers" with a fork. Gross. Since I'm a novice cook, I wasn't able to adjust the reciepe in time to save the meal.
One saving grace is the fact it's organized by "time" rather than indexed. Terrible for people looking for something specific, but for us "browsers" this is a fun way of searching. I also took the liberty of pairing each menu title with an appropriate movie. For instance the "Monster Munchies" menu I paired with the movie "Godzilla". That was the funnest part, matching her menu titles to movies I would love to share with friends. Like the show "Dinner & a Movie". In this way, you can make it even MORE fun when you are browsing for the perfect reciepe to share with friends.
Cooking "Rond the Clock" Rachael Ray's 30-Minute Meals.......2007-03-22
My wife loves it. She has been using only this book since she got it. Great meals!!! She's lost 5 lbs. since she started using it.Cooking 'Round the Clock: Rachael Ray's 30-Minute Meals
A Great Cookbook for a Person Who's New to Cooking and Willing to Buy Lots of Ingredients.......2007-02-10
In Cooking 'Round the Clock, the irrepressible Rachael Ray fills every hour with fun in the kitchen and joy in the eating. This woman is a whirlwind! She gets you off to a fast start on that conclusion when she relates how she didn't sleep as a child . . . but would sneak down to cook in the middle of the night. And she's still a night owl, often writing her many cookbooks while you and I are abed. True to her roots, everything in this book can be produced in 30 minutes or less. Don't let the long ingredient lists fool you on that point: Items are mostly mixed together and quickly prepared at that point.
The book is organized around times of the day, mostly providing short menus, but sometimes varying that approach with a list of recipes. Here are the sections:
7-11 a.m. Rise & Shiners has sections on seven forms of scrambled eggs, a champagne menu, three kinds of hash, three sweet breakfast items, continental breakfast breads, and heavier dishes (oatmeal, ham steaks, and toast stacks with eggs and bacon)
11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Lunch delivers three brunch menus, seven lunch menus, two great heavy-duty salads, lots of sandwich recipes, three soups, a taste of Italian and French food
4-7 p.m. Early-Bird Specials covers 18 menus with a variety of classic American and ethnic (English, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican) dishes plus three hearty "stoups"
7-9 p.m. Sit-Down Suppers has eleven menus cover the range from steak to burgers while hitting turkey, chicken, and fish in between. There are four other recipes (chili, chicken and couscous, chicken salad, and polenta and mozzarella)
7-12 p.m. TV Dinners & Snacks is filled with the foods we all eat in from of the television (nachos, pizza, subs, popcorn, dips, appetizer munchies, and various wraps)
9-12 Bistro Meals takes you on a world tour of great eating menus (bourbon-orange chicken, tuna marinara, duck salad, Cuban-spiced pork, and French-style cod)
12-7 a.m. Late-Nite Bites is all recipes (7 kinds of tartines for the toaster oven, quick "gnocchi," pita-based pizzas for the toaster oven, more eggs dishes, Mexican coffee, cheese-based entrees like welsh rarebit, and pasta carbonara)
Are you feeling full yet?
Unlike her earlier cookbooks, I found the flavor experiences in most of these recipes to be less adventuresome. But there were quite a few recipes where I was intrigued by the combination of flavor and speed that she offers:
Green Eggs and Ham (pp. 30-31)
Oatmeal Cookie Pancakes (p. 43)
Orange and Almond Scones (p. 45)
Mixed Greens with Balsamic Vinegar and Strawberries (p. 64)
Smoked Turkey Waldorf Salad (p. 65)
Curried Cashew-Chicken Salad (p. 66)
Shrimp on Chicken Caesar Romaine Lettuce Wraps (p. 69)
Fruit Soup (p. 70)
Bombay Brunch Wrap (p. 79)
Cobb Sandwiches (p. 80)
30-Minute Shepherd's Pie (p. 94)
Baked Stuffed Flounder (p. 108)
Shrimp Newburg (p. 131)
Mixed Green Salad with Gorgonzola Dressing (p. 137)
Chicken, Chorizo, and Tortilla "Stroup" (p. 148)
Gorgonzola and Sage Sirloin Burgers (p. 151)
Chili Verde (p. 154)
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Crudités (p. 167)
Bittersweet Dijon-Dressed Salad (p. 183)
Haddock with Bacon, Onions, and Tomatoes (p. 184)
Gorgonzola and Walnut Spaghetti (p. 186)
Cuban-Spiced Pork Tenderloin and Soffrito Rice (pp. 202-203)
Veggie Scrambles with Pesto (p. 224)
Green Ranch-Hand Eggs (p. 228)
Rigatoni Carbonara (pp. 236-237)
The rest of the dishes seemed potentially interesting, but seemed a bit too close to the standards to provide much excitement of variety. But these could easily be staples for those who don't yet know how to do the standards.
If you love turkey-based items and lots of Italian sauces and cheeses, you'll be quite pleased with what you find here.
But you won't save much time unless you look over the recipes you want to try and assemble the ingredients in advance. My cupboard and refrigerator don't have much in the way of items like fresh ginger root, scallions, cream, fresh parsley, brandy, nutmeg, garlic pickles, sausage, whole-berry cranberry sauce, pierogi, kielbasa, kale, sauerkraut, fresh chives, or fresh dill. These are just some of the ingredients listed on pages 92-100.
I'm pretty sure I can buy all of these at my supermarket, but I would need to put a special shopping list to be able to launch into a 30-minute meal preparation.
Enjoy!
Just ok..........2006-12-10
I bought this book used at a local bookstore and was extremely excited to try it out. I am a fan of the show on Food Network as well as Rachel's new talk show. I was a little dissappointed though because I didn't have most of the ingredients required to make any of the recipes. A lot of the ingredients (I think) most busy people would not have in their pantries. I guess I expected simpler meals where I didn't have to buy fancy and expensive ingredients that I may not ever use again. I will admit, you can get some excellent ideas from the book.
hard to use.......2006-09-23
The recipes are fine, but the book does not contain an index or a table of contents. Recipes are organized by time of day you might want to make them. If you read cookbooks cover to cover then you'll be ok. The only way to find a recipe is to flip through every page in the book.
