Book Description
Modern finance overlaps with many fields of mathematics, and for students this can represent considerable strain. Mathematical Techniques in Finance is an ideal textbook for Masters finance courses with a significant quantitative element while also being suitable for finance Ph.D. students. Developed for the highly acclaimed Master of Science in Finance program at Imperial College London, it offers a carefully crafted blend of numerical applications and theoretical grounding in economics, finance, and mathematics. In the best engineering tradition, Ales Cerný mixes tools from calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, numerical mathematics, and programming to analyze in an accessible way some of the most intriguing problems in financial economics. Eighty figures, over 70 worked examples, 25 simple ready-to-run computer programs, and several spreadsheets further enhance the learning experience. Each chapter is followed by a number of classroom-tested exercises with solutions available on the book's web site.
Applied mathematics is a craft that requires practice--this textbook provides plenty of opportunities to practice it and teaches cutting-edge finance into the bargain. Asset pricing is a common theme throughout the book; and readers can follow the development from discrete one-period models to continuous time stochastic processes. This textbook sets itself apart by the comprehensive treatment of pricing and risk measurement in incomplete markets, an area of current research that represents the future in risk management and investment performance evaluation.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to financial mathematics.......2007-01-06
I had the great pleasure of attending Dr. Cerny's lectures in mathematical techniques in finance. The lectures were structured around this book and were accordingly brilliant. The book starts off gently, to great relief for those who need to cover more basic mathematics in discrete time, before moving on to continous time and later introducing concepts such as Matingales and Browninan Motion. The book shows you how to derive such as the Black Scholes Formula, and introduces the Ito formula which is extensively used in pricing options.
Importantly, the book is clearly written and 'recycles' the exercises as it progresses from simple to more complex topics. I found this to be of great use since you already have an understanding of what the exercise is all about, intuitively and 'mechanically', and you can compare the methods and more readily understand what is going on in the more complex examples.
This book does not require a heave maths background. As always, the more the better, however, you can easily make great use of this book only with an understanding of simple calculus like derivatives and integrals. A basic understanding of linear algebra will also prove beneficial.
If you are looking for a book that will explain important concepts in finance, then this book is exactly what you are looking for.
The Best Option Pricing book I've read!,.......2004-10-15
After reading million books on derivative pricing, this one is the only one which defenitely combines a practical approach to it. You'll start learning about all the maths you need and all the building blocks, all by examples. And suddenly on Chapter 11, it puts it all together and effortless you can price any option with any payoff you can imagine, I got impress withmyself. I work at Credit Suisse First Boston and we have it in all the Quant's desks.
Hands-on & easy to read.......2004-05-25
This is a great little book. I would put it in my category of 'original' books on quant finance, which includes books written by Paul Wilmott, Mark Joshi, Rick Osband and Neftci.
The reason being that the author uses a more informal style than most quant books and is very hands-on. If you're interested in understanding quant models and eventually applying them in the real world, then this is the kind of book you want. If you're looking for mathematical beauty and formalism, then look elsewhere.
The editors could have done a better job with some of the flow and formatting - maybe next edition (it is sometimes hard to link the text to the figures and tables).
Great book.
Very good coverage, practical orientation.......2004-01-09
Consider first, this book's subtitle, "Tools for Incomplete Markets." A "complete market" (the kind assumed by the Black-Scholes-Merton model) is one in which any derivative product can be dynamically replicated by means of cash and the underlying asset. An incomplete market, then, is one is which the world of derivatives and their underlyings do not match each other in the point-by-point replicable manner implied by that definition of completeness. This failure to match makes for a necessary imperfection in hedging. That, of course, is the real world, where traders practice, as Scholes and Merton famously discovered in Greenwich, CT not long ago!
A variety of illustrations of this practical emphasis might be adduced. In the preface, for example, Dr. Cerný tells us frankly that in his experience "is it hard to understand the Itô calculus, but it is possible to get used to it and to apply it quickly and consistently...." Book Description
Earth is constantly bombarded by debris from space. Tons of ice fragments, dust, and meteorites fall from the sky every day, but most of the debris burns up in the atmosphere before it can cause any harm. Large asteroids are much less common -- but they are a deadly threat if they reach the ground. This book explains what asteroids are, how they form, and damage they have caused in the past -- including the scientific belief that a massive asteroid killed off the dinosaurs.
Customer Reviews:
Just Gruesome Enough for a 1st/2nd Grader.......2006-09-30
One of the things fascinating to children, especially boys, is the potential of really loud booms that might just wipe out life as we know it on our planet. And killer asteroids certainly fall into this category. This book is almost certain to attract the attention of young boys in the first few grades.
The book has a certain boy attracting sensationalism in its style but is scientifically correct and points out the current thinking of the majority of scientists as they consider the likelihood of impacts by killer asteroids. A fair amount of attention is paid to the Chicxulub Crater that is generally believed to have ended the age of the dinasaurs.
The book points out that asteroid strikes like this one only occur about once every 50 to 100 million years. Still it's been 65 million years.
All in all, a book that should please the scientifically or gruesome youngster.

Fun Science for Everyone.......2006-11-17
Killer asteroids, deadly comets and other celestial rocks and debris are the subject of this children's book. I have a fascination with all things asteroidal and read this book with glee. The author explains about the extinction of the dinosaurs, past asteroid (rock), comet (ice gas) impacts on earth and the moon and about the potential disaster such objects can cause.
The author goes into enough depth to cover the science involved, and how catastrophes might be avoided by the use of technology, weaponry (such as bombs, nuclear warheads etc), without being bogged down with too much scientific jargon. The author even discusses other celestial phenomenon such as the asteroid belt between Saturn and Jupiter.
This is an interesting accessible book for scientists of all ages.

Book Description
Rehabilitation of Rivers Principles and Implementation Edited by Louise C. de Waal Division of Environmental and Analytical Sciences, University of Wolverhampton, UK Andrew R. G. Large Department of Geography, University of Newcastle, UK and P. Max Wade Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, UK River rehabilitation has become an issue at the top of the agenda for water authorities and river managers in many countries throughout the world. This challenging topic involves a wide range of themes, many of which are brought together in this volume. They concern planning strategy, implementation and project appraisal for a number of different types of river systems including upland, lowland and urban rivers. Topic areas addressed include hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and economics as, to be successful, rehabilitation of freshwaters must incorporate all of these subjects within a holistic framework. This volume covers a wide range of countries, provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of factors concerning river rehabilitation and encompasses policy, planning and implementation. As such, the text will have a lasting reference value and practical application. Rehabilitation of Rivers combines prescriptive, analytical and reviewing contributions, covering a wide range of case studies from Britain, continental Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan. It also examines strategic issues such as catchment planning and integrated application of ecology and engineering in river rehabilitation. This book will be an important text for all water authorities and river managers as well as hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists and nature conservationists.

Book Description
From the editor of Urban Climber magazine: solid, clear instruction that takes gym climbers from novice to master.
*Indoor climbing is growing rapidly-significantly faster over the past five years than surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and mountain climbing according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association *Author is a pioneering instructor and gym climbing course developer *Key exercises reinforce fundamental skills, illustrated in sequential photos
Gym climbing has evolved into a sport in its own right and Matt Burbach has been there to spur it on. He established, developed, and directed the Indoor Climbing School of Earth Treks Climbing Center in Maryland, the largest climbing gym on the east coast. Now he presents the same techniques and training exercises honed by coaching hundreds of climbers.
Burbach covers all aspects of indoor rock climbing in detail, including what to look for in a gym, analysis of equipment and how it works, proper top-rope systems management, and movement technique. More advanced indoor climbers will appreciate chapters on topics such as indoor leading, performance, competition climbing, and bouldering. For outdoor rock climbers now training in gyms, this guide aids the "reverse" transition from climbing on real rock to pulling on plastic. Throughout, Burbach not only demonstrates the proper techniques and skills, but goes one step further to explain why those practices are better.
Customer Reviews:
If you climb you need this book!.......2005-03-10
Matt Burbach (a.k.a. M@ at Urban Climber Magazine) continues to impress with this instructive and comprehensive book on gym climbing. The photos and descriptions of everything from technique to learning how to lead are really useful for someone like me who is beginning to climb hard routes more consistently. I don't climb outdoors very often, so the other books discussing climbing on "real" rock don't really give me the information I need to improve at my local rock gym. Burbach's book is different. It is specifically geared toward "urban climbers" like myself who climb in gyms and want to improve. I recommend this book to people wanting to maximize their indoor experience.

Customer Reviews:
A Most Helpful Quick Reference.......2007-04-17
This is most often the first commentary I reach for in studying a passage of Scripture. When I am away from my library this book (along with the NT companion volume which in some ways is even better) this is the only commentary that I even think of taking with me in printed and bound form. Some may find this set disappointing because they do not explore the meaning of a passage nor all of the scholarship related to it. What they do give, they give very well indeed, and that is a reasonably thorough top-level survey of the historical, cultural, and archaeological factors that are relevant to the passage in a compact, yet useable from.
Included are citations and summaries of literature and historical facts that shed light on a passage. For the deepest levels of research and study, this book is no substitute for a complete library and good old fashioned grunt work, but to begin to get the meaning of a passage or a set of passages it is hard to imagine a better place to start. It can be useful in helping me to decide where to devote my time doing more exhaustive research, or as a quick "sanity check" to ensure that as I begin to survey a longer section of Scripture I am not reading meanings into any one verse that might be foreign to the original writer and his peers or otherwise going off in an incorrect direction.
A good complement to a more conventional set of commentaries - highly reccomended tool for filling the holes in many day to day Bible studies.
So much good info.......2007-03-09
I've found it to be priceless to have this book (and the NT edition also) at the table whenever doing a Bible study. When I do group Bible Studies (especially inductive studies), people love to crack this reference book open so that they can get more clues into the significance of objects and names and motivation of the characters in the Bible. I am not a Biblical scholar, so there would simply no way for me to learn about some of the more obscure details we come across during even common passages for study. I also own the electronic version of this book, so that I have it with me wherever I go with my laptop.
Excellent Cultural Orientation Tool.......2007-02-17
This and its New Testament companion are excellent resources in helping to understand the culture and thus the likely meaning in any given text. They will not replace standard commentaries but are a great addition to them.
Good, but not as detailed as the New Testament companion volume.......2006-07-07
I was mildly disappointed with this book. It is supposed to be a verse by verse tour of the Old Testament, giving cultural, historical, and social information that lies behind the text. But even though the Old Testament is three times bigger than the New Testament, this book is a tad shorter than the NT companion volume written by Keener.
Moreover, the book is very uneven. Some parts of the Old Testament are loaded with information, and other parts of the Old Testament are skipped entirely. And then you have paragraphs of scripture that have only one or two lines of comment that are not always helpful to the preacher who is looking for a bit more to give to the people.
Yet in some sections, Walton, Mathews and Chavalas deliver the goods. For example, the information in Genesis 12 about how difficult and unprecedented it would be for a man like Abram to leave everything behind to follow God was very helpful to me as I was preparing a sermon on this portion of scripture.
And I really appreciated the background information in Exodus 5-8 about how there was an Egyptian god that was overpowered in every area where Moses raised his staff.
Therefore, I am giving this book 4 stars, but really, you will need another book to give you the rest of what you will need when teaching through the Old Testament. Perhaps the IVP Dictionary of the OT Pentateuch and the IVP Dictionary of the OT Historical Books will do just fine. Or you may want to add the New Nelson's Manners and Customs of Bible Times.
Exceptional Resource!.......2004-05-29
I have been using this resource for more than four years in a variety of contexts--academic classes, Bible studies with high school and college students, and so on. This book is an invaluable resource.
Two main reasons to buy this book: 1) We are all very removed from the cultural perspective of the authors who wrote the Old Testament. This book helps bridge that gap by pointing out details we would consider irrelevant and giving context to other details we would otherwise misunderstand. 2) The text is highly readable and accessible for a wide selection of readers. The scholarship is very strong, fair, and thought-provoking, and furthermore, the editorial team did an excellent job ensuring that the information was presented in a clear and interesting manner. I've often found myself provoked to curiousity and ended up reading more than I originally intended to (and, no, that is not a habit for me with most reference books!).
A brief word, too, about the fact that an evangelical publisher is responsible for this book being published. First, every publishing house has biases, so to judge an evangelical publisher for publishing work sympathetic to evangelical tendencies is a bit harsh. Secondly, as one who reads a fair amount from a variety of sources, I have often found that IV Press books exhibit an uncommon level of integrity and fairness in the way their books are written. Thirdly, it is a logical fallacy to argue that a book does not contain truth or is inaccurate due to its origin. Have an open mind and judge the accuracy of the material on its own merits.
Really, this is a great text. I know several dozen men and women who regularly use this book in their work and who consider it very helpful for the purpose of presenting Scripture accurately. I strongly encourage you to buy and use this book.

Book Description
Why is the serpent singled out as more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made? Why was pork considered unclean and forbidden? What is the cultural significance of the golden calf? These and many more questions arise as we read the first five books of the Old Testament. But the answers won't be found merely by searching the text more carefully. They call for knowledge apart from the text of Scripture. They summon us to investigate the world of the Bible that lies outside the Bible. It is a world that the original readers of Genesis, Exodus and the other books would have been very familiar with, a world that would have required little extra explanation for them. But few of us, now centuries removed from the time of the books' first writing, are equipped for such understanding.Fortunately in recent decades much has been learned of that distant and ancient Near Eastern world. But much of that knowledge is still "locked up" in archaeological studies and academic texts to which scholars alone hold the keys.In
The IVP Bible Background Commentary: Genesis--Deuteronomy, John Walton and Victor Matthews make accessible to us the results of extensive historical and cultural investigation and then apply it toward our understanding of each passage of the Pentateuch. Like its predecessor, the bestselling
IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, this work is a "must have" for every student of the Bible. Pastors, teachers, Sunday-school teachers, college and seminary students, and everyday readers of the Bible will find it a priceless and constant companion to their study and reading of these five foundational books of the Old Testament.

I think it is a well written commentary. It gives good insights into the thoughts and culture of the OT period. It is not filled with the usual boring stuff. I think you will enjoy it

Book Description
Award-winning correspondent for ABC World News and Nightline Jim Wooten is a seasoned newsman who has covered tragedy the world over. Now he tells the story of Nkosi Johnson, an eleven-year-old South African boy born with AIDS into poverty in a shantytown and given only a few years to live. But his ailing mother managed to cross her country's divisions of race and class to bring him to Gail Johnson, who would raise him for her. Before his own death at the age of twelve, Nkosi had become, in Nelson Mandela's words, an icon of the struggle for life for millions in Africa and around the world. And he had changed Wooten's life in ways Wooten is still discovering. We Are All the Same is a work of Biblical simplicity and power that reveals the astonishing resilience of the human spirit.

an amazing book ever.......2007-05-31
My name is Sewon, and I am a freshman in high school. In one of my classes, I had to read a book, We Are All The Same by Jim Wooten. The cover of the book tempted me at first because it was a real story and the comments of other people were praiseful. Although I had a hard time reading this book at first because several chapters such as chapter 1 and 2 were really boring, it was a really good book to read, overall. To briefly describe the book, this book represents the life of Gail Johnson and Nkosi. Gail is a woman who adopts a boy from South Africa, a segregated country, who is living with AIDS. This book shows many important qualities that we must have in life, such as courage and equality. Since this is a real story, this is more interesting and realistic. While I was reading this book, I felt as though I was part of the book. The strength of this book is that the book is not that long. The readers may become bored when the book is too long. a majority of pages tells of life's teachings while using very eloquent language. I really think this is the best book for any of the teenagers who are interested in reading the book! I really enjoyed reading the book and I strongly recommend it for teenagers.
We Are All the Same Review.......2007-05-30
Hello. I am a freshman foreign student in high school. In my ESL class, I read the book, We Are All The Same by Jim Wooten. At the first time, it was sort of like a history book. However, I became love to read this book because it well describes mother's love and boy's courage. There is a southern African boy with AIDS, Nkosi and Gail Johnson who tries to help Nkosi with her love. Gail Johnson adopted Nkosi and fought for his illness. When Gail Johnson took care of Nkosi and gave everything for him, we can realize our insufficiency of love and acceptance. I could feel how much I am taking everything for granted. If you read this book, you can feel sadness, kindness, acceptances, deficiencies and love. This book would be the precious story to the people who want to perceive important treasures in their life.

I am a high school student. In my class, we were allowed to choose one book to read from the four books our teacher assigned. After reading the summaries of these four books, I decided to choose this book We Are All The Same by Jim Wooten. After reading this book, I realized how tiny we are as human beings yet many of us take our wonderful and normal life for granted. This book is well written especially in describing Nkosi's life. However, the first few chapters can be quite boring. The story is based on a little boy, Nkosi Johnson, and his foster mother, Gail. It is about Nkosi who was born with AIDS and how he dealt with this disease as well as how Gail protected Nkosi and what she did for him. I enjoyed reading this book and I strongly recommend this book. I believe Nkosi Johnson is unforgettable to all the people who read his story.
We're All the Same but We Write Differently.......2005-09-30
Too bad Jim Wooten couldn't get himself out of the story even tho he promised at the beginning to insert himself only where necessary. I felt like I was listening to a documentary vs. reading a memoir. He completely missed the emotional tone of the thing and instead, got lost for three pages on who the father was. He should stick to Tv or whatever he did before that made him famous.

Every child must know Nkosi's story and his courage to face his fate.
