The Drucker Foundation shares this book and valuable resources on its Web site. With this volume you can share the approach with your colleagues and the Board of directors. There's also a half-hour video that illustrates five examples of nonprofit-business alliances.

Really wonderful book.......2007-05-20
I spent a summer as a kid freediving and spearfishing in La Jolla, Calif.. This book took me back to that time and documents a history of spearfishing that goes all the way back to its birth here in the US. A really great read. I was sad when it was over. Wonderful first hand accounts of the men who went deep and who are still discovering the biggest and last frontier on our planet.

I love this book. It puts me in the water on those sad days when I can't get out. I recomend this for anyway that enjoys spearfishing, freediving, or the ocean.
"Swim Free Ocean Warrior" .......2006-11-29
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes fishing, the ocean, or nature in general. It was very touching in the end with his final sentences. I am sad to say that 9 out of 10 times it was not a page-turner. I learned so much, but you have to stick with it to enjoy it. I absolutely loved the writing style used in this book. Carlos takes things from the beginning and middle of the story and puts you on hold, and then wraps it up in the end. Sometimes the book got boring and other times you wish it didn't end. The author gave many details about life under the sea and the journey of a hunter.
Even a greater appreciation for the book now........2006-10-27
I read the book about 7 years ago when I had been spearfishing and lobster diving periodically. In the last few years I have gained close to an obsession for freediving/spearfishing/lobster diving (part of it grown out of frustration of small, over-crowded surf). I recently re-read the book and had a greater appreciation for it and even though familiar with it, still could not put it down. Mr. Eyles writing style gives more of a spiritual, soul-fulfilling description of the sport and the ocean in general. I am not some new-age hippie tree-hugger, but in reading the book, you do gain a greater appreciation, as well as sadness, for the ocean. The history he covers of the sport and his vivid descriptions of what the "fathers" first saw "under the waves" left detailed pictures in my mind. The historical photos in the book would be mind-boggling for those with experience in spearfishing. I dive most of the areas in the book and can only imagine what it must have been like a few decades ago, hence the sadness I referred to earlier in my review.
Anyone into fishing, spearfishing or any ocean sport should probably own this book. This book could even be appreciated by the non-participant of these interests, it is that well written.
The Zen of Being Submerged.......2006-06-26
Carlos Eyles gives a first hand account of the people in Southern California who made spearfishing into what it is today. Eyles' love of the water comes through in his writing, making "The Last of the Blue Water Hunters" an enjoyable read for all. The photographs displayed in the plates are stunning black and whites that show some of the monstrous fish that these men pulled from the water in the fifties, sixties, and seventies.
Although I recommend this book for everyone, I emphasize that this is a book that will teach you the spirit of what free-diving and spear-fishing is about, and NOT an instruction manual for beginners on how to spear-fish. However, if you are like me, then you should buy a guide to spearfishing with this book, because after reading it, you will want to jump in the water, spear in hand, ready to live the dream that Carlos Eyles describes in masterful detail.

The inclusion of edited material from ZAMM was welcome. I found I was distracted when I was actually reading ZAMM andreferencing the guidebook. My suggestion - read ZAMM completely then refer to the guidebook to explore a section more deeply. The reviews of ZAMM were of passing interest, from the early reviews published after the book's release to later ones and their criticism.
I'm not a deeply devout person of any given persuasion, so the religious comparisons and references were of lesser importance. I think they would be helpful if one were looking to delve deeper into Buddhism or other philosophy. This Guidebook DID ADD to my overall understanding and enjoyment of ZAMM.
An essential bring-along for the ZMM.......2000-11-29
For fans of ZMM, this is an incredible book that summarizes various aspects of the ZMM book. First and foremost, it gives you the necessary background on philosophy to get a better understanding of where the Pirsig is coming from.
Secondly, it is great studying material for those of us who're interested in getting deeper into the issues that Pirsig gets to in the ZMM. Particularly, I liked the section in this book that relates Quality with Taoist principles.

Additional background material, both philosophical and historical, really illuminates the original Pirsig book. The bonus is sometimes startling insights, and new questions (often unanswered for the reader to work out). Think of it as an informal but well-written textbook by teachers who care both about the material and the student. It lures the reader into further self-study in epistemology, metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics. Contains valuable passages that were edited out of the original Pirsig book.

Very profound. Not many books make you think like "Zen ..." does. Heightens the pleasure of reading by adding the dimension of thought to it. 'Phaedrus' leaps off the pages of the book to stay with you for the rest of your life...and perhaps beyond too. Keeps up to its own high quality values. If you liked "Zen ..." I would recommend "LILA" by Robert Pirsig which is another masterpiece.
