Book Description
Meeting the people who grow our bananas and cocoa and make our clothes, this
No-Nonsense Guide to Fair Trade tells the human story behind what we consume. Examin-ing the global contest between "free" and "fair" trade, David Ransom argues that the key question is not whether trade should be regulated or deregulated, but whether it is to be the master or servant of the people.
And as fair trade products are being turned into brands by large corporations, a new contest opens-it is no longer just a question of fair versus free, but what kind of fair trade.
Customer Reviews:
Fair book at best on a crucial topic.......2004-05-05
This is the weakest of the seven no-nonsense guides I have perused so far. Unless you already know quite a bit about fair trade (including the specific examples used in the book) the book is very confusing. To be honest, I am surprised this got past the editors at New Internationalist and Verso. The first chapter, on Chiapas, Mexico, is utterly nonsense (in direct violation of the series title!). It does, however, get a little clearer from there on.
My other complaint is that the author portrays fair trade as a something of a panacea solution to the ills of the non-western world, at least right up until the last chapters. Fair trade, at best, will be one small part of a much larger solution to the disparities between the rich and poor of the world. This book gives something of a disingenuous "good news" feel, as for now, while fair trade is creating some opportunities for a lucky few in the Global South, what it's been really effective at is producing a target niche market for guilt-ridden consumers in the North. Don't get me wrong, we should all feel guilty about our complicity in the problems of the South, and buying fair trade is one small thing each of us can do. But my hunch is that there are folks out there who feel like they're "saving" the world through fair trade purchasing, making it for some, no doubt, yet another conscience-tonic for the well-off.

Book Description
The study of planetary or solar magnetic fields explains natural magnetism as a phenomenon of magnetohydrodynamics. The kinematic dynamo theory, especially the fast dynamo treated in this volume, is somewhat simpler but still it presents formidable analytical problems related to chaotic dynamics, for example. This remarkable book presents the status of the theory, including techniques of numerical simulations and modelling, along with a summary of results to date. The first three chapters introduce the problem and present examples of fast dynamo action in flows and maps. The remaining nine chapters deal with various analytical approaches and model systems. The book addresses astronomers and geophysicists, researchers and students alike.

Not a good bet.......2000-01-27
This is NOT a particularly good/useful book.
I took the GRE Biology subject test in 12/1999. I used several different study aids, and scored in the top 97%. This book does not get any of the credit. The book is too simplistic and limited in scope--there is considerable material on the exam this book does not even address. It is not as wretched as some others; (to wit, The Best Test Preparation for the GRE Biology Subject Exam, by Ogden, which was so bad I don't think Amazon even sells it any more), but it is unlikely you will achieve a high score on the test if it's your sole source of study material.
I found the most useful study aids to be the slim test handbook put out by ETS itself (Amazon does sell it, at both a lower price and lower shipping cost than buying it direct from ETS. Go figure.), and the textbooks Biology by Campbell and Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al.
Cracking the GRE Biology Subject Test by Deborah Guest was all right for a more simplistic review, but insufficent if you're gunning for really high scores.
This one just isn't worth the time or the money, when there are better options.

Customer Reviews:
excellent!!!.......2005-08-30
...as usual, Dr. Yang does it again with this exceptional work. Buy his books...honestly, buy them all! You can read this many times over and still keep learning new things and getting new ideas. Pretty much like all of his books. Thank you yet again, Dr. Yang. You make me feel humble knowing there are still true masters living in this world.
Another fine book by Dr. Ming.......2005-02-02
This is another of Dr. Ming's excellent books on the Chinese martial arts. I have many of them, including his complete video tape series on chin na, and regard his books and videos as a source of quality information.
There are a number of crane and white crane styles, such as southern white crane, northern black crane, eastern Tibetan white crane, and at least four styles of southern white crane are known. All have their own unique stylistic qualities but share with the others a common core of crane techniques and an emphasis on both hard and soft aspects. The feeding crane is a form rather than a style, and the "vibrating crane" is a fa-jing or explosive chi energy technique. (I don't propose to get into a discussion of chi principles here or their validity, I just mention this for factual purposes).
I should mention right off that despite the title, most of this book is actually about white crane chi gung principles and practice. In fact, 178 pages of the book are devoted to it. There are separate chapters on stationary soft, moving soft, stationary hard, and moving hard chi gung, and a related chapter covers Jin, or energy and power production. Only the last 55 or so pages are actually devoted to the martial applications, so if you're primarily interested in those, perhaps this book isn't for you. However, the photos showing the martial applications are very clear and of value also.
One interesting thing I noticed was how combat realistic the hard, moving chi gung was. Just from the photos, it wasn't easily distinguishable from a real white crane kung fu form. Oddly enough, one of the chi gung postures resembled one from Indonesian Panca Indra Suci Pentjak Silat, an interesting coincidence.
White Crane kung is considered to be an especially refined style of kung fu. It has had an important influence on karate styles such as Okinawan goju-ryu and shorin-ryu, and also Yamaguchi's Japanese goju-ryu has at least one hakutsuru or white crane form. (In fact, I once saw a film of Yamaguchi's funeral and one of his top students performed a white crane form in his honor). Three of these occur in a number of variations in the Okinawan styles. (It's known that aged masters taught different versions to different students on the same day. Whether this was the result of age-related memory deficiencies, shall we say, or some other factor isn't known.) The white crane master, Go Ken Ki, is usually credited with introducing these forms into the Okinawan karate styles.
In addition to its influence on karate, white crane is important in the history of the Chinese arts not only for its own stylistic innovations, but also for its influence on tiger-crane styles such as Hung Gar and other five animals type styles, which incorporate the crane as one of the five animals (the others being dragon, snake, leopard, and tiger). There is also the older Ha Se Fu or "5 Lower Tigers" style, which contains a white crane form. Unlike Hung gar with its extremely long forms (the first form in Hung Gar is over 200 moves long), their forms are shorter and have only one for each animal, which is kept separate from the rest, rather than integrated, as in Hung Gar.
In addition to the above, there is also a chapter on principles and concepts common to all kung fu styles (such as hard, soft, jin energy training, chi, and so on), and there is also a nice history of white crane and kung fu, including some interesting stories about legendary masters and their exploits (which are basically de rigeur in any kung fu book).
Overall, this is another fine book from master Ming emphasizing mostly the more advanced, internal chi gung training of white crane, which should be of interest mostly to intermediate and advanced students who already have some idea of the martial applications and perhaps want to know more about the internal aspects and mental training as well.
A valuable White Crane reference.......2005-01-08
The White Crane is a southern chinese kung fu style, and Dr. Yang's reference sets the standard. The White Crane style is a parent art from which many southern styles developed (including Wing Chun, Japanese and Okinawan Karate) so it is worth studying.
Included is the martial theory behind the system, featuring lengthy discusssions on Qi & Jin and their martial applicability. A martial artist of a style that is descended from the White Crane will find much to enhance his own understanding of his art.
This is mainly a reference material, as Books and DVDs do not make good primary instructional material for martial arts, so plan on attending a seminar or finding a good local school to get the most from this book.
Michael LaRoda.......2004-11-29
Being a marital artist myself for over thirty years I say this book has been most fulfilling after becoming bogged down in the working society and not having time to work out, I was greatly discouraged at the rate my knee joints developed arthritis like pain. Before reading the book I forced myself to work leg work to see what would happen and in a few short months I was walking without a limp. After reading the book I can see that in a few short years continuing down this route would soon result in painful joints again. Not only has this book pointed to a more complete and sensible direction for my martial arts, but also a way that has already improved the quality of my life.
Let's talk about gong fu and say nothing at all.......2004-08-22
I ordered this book to learn about the white crane system and to learn a bit about chi gong. The book has about 200 pages where the same information that can be written in 50 pages is regurgitated and only then do you get some white crane information. The pictures and sequence where hard to understand since several movements are depicted in one still and a few lines are supposed to let me know whet just happened. There is a pit of good information here but the bitter fruit that surrounds it is hard on the digestion.

Customer Reviews:
Everybody should have one of these!.......2007-07-14
I loved this little book! This is the result of a dad sitting down to write out a few words of wisdom and advice for his son who was going off to his freshman year at college. The first list was 511 entries, and then, he mailed his son a new collection every two years.
There's some great advice all through this book! And no long stories attached either. Short and straight to the point, each numbered piece of advice is no more than a few lines long. The suggestions cover a broad range, some are serious while others are funny or trivial, but all are honest and good advice, and many are just interesting. Like #841: "When your dog dies, frame his collar and put it above a window facing west" -I've never heard of that before.
I highly recommend this little book as a gifts for anybody in your life and for anything from birthdays to graduations or just because. Would also make a good coffe table or bathroom book too.
Great advice to give college students.......2007-06-02
I purchased these books for a group of college students that worked together as a staff. Some graduating, some still studying. I can only hope they do take the time to read it (here and there - not all at once) and it helps each one of them be better people. I believe this book has the ability to create role models and help people to treat others with kindness.
A delightful thing to have lying around..........2007-04-02
I first found this book on a bargain shelf at my local bookstore and picked it up for just 4 or 5 dollars. It really was a good buy.
It really is not a book that one would want to pick up and read but rather a book that you would want to have lie on your desk at work or on your coffee table at home so that visitors (or clients) can pick it up and turn to a random page and find any assortment of good philosophical sayings.
Each time I pick it up I find myself smiling at the fact that it gives something new each time you open it. With over 1500 entries, it really does give advice on everything. It gives advice on the things that we ethically know, but not necessarily are written down anywhere.
I bought a second copy not long ago for a friend of mine for a Christmas gift. It's a simple little thing that can make a big reaction.
Complete Life's Little Instruction Book.......2007-02-08
H. Jackson Brown, Jr. is among the best advice givers in today's world of literacy. This book is the best gift for anyone starting a whole new lifestyle. I recommend this book to all young adults, especially those who will soon go on to College. For the game of life is always a hard game to play for young and old alike, and we can ALWAYS use a little or a lot of motivation every now and then.
Bobby's review.......2006-03-28
I really like this book. Especially, the golden / brown hard cover is beautiful. I had bought Vol 1 and 2 about 11 years ago and lost them. So, I decided to buy the new one.
The content inside is very touching. I have really exercised several key ideas of the book which is resulting in a better way of life and thinking.
Buy it!

beware.......2007-06-29
I am curious about the reviews in which plagiarism is mentioned especially where there don't appear to be any bad reviews concerning plagiarism. This leads me to believe there have been other known instances in which Ms. Larson has used others' copyrighted material. The good reviews here at Amazon are suspect and sound as if they were written by Linda Larson herself. (the 'author'). Do your research, and investigate Ms. Larson's claims on her websites because I am personally aware of copyright infringement in the case of another book she claimed to have written. If others are aware of plagiarism on the part of the 'author' in any other published books please feel free to contact me.
Disappointed with quality of printing.......2002-01-26
I bought this as a gift for my boss. I thought the subject was very interesting and bought it based on the positive reviews of other readers. When I received it, I was very disappointed by the quality of the printing. It looked like someone photo-copied it. I expected a $12 paperback to have a more professional look. Needless to say, I won't be giving it as a gift.
Mind you, I am not judging the quality of the writing. Since I know nothing about children or accupressure, I am not qualified to rate that.
The Little Baby Massage Book.......2001-01-27
This book has wonderful information on Chinese "TUINA" Acupressure and Aromatherapy. The author studied in China, and the valuable information taken from both Chinese Medicine Doctors and a very well known Registered Nurse Jane Buckle, author of "Clinical Aromatherapy in Nursing" of whom wrote the foreword in this book. There is much credible information in the book, great for new mothers and for those who simply want to use acupressure to help their children! Sincerely, LOVED THE BOOK!! AMTA (AMERICAN MASSAGE THERAPY JOURNAL IS DOING A FRONT COVER ARTICLE ON THIS BOOK SPRING 2001. A NATIONAL MEDICAL ORGANIZATION, BOOK REVIEW WILL FOLLOW IN SEPTEMBER 2001 ISSUE OF THE MASSAGE THERAPY JOURNAL.
This book is great.......2001-01-27
I have used the information in this book and it is truly great and very helpful to new mothers with infants. I am devastated of what another reviewer has to say about Ms Larson's book. This sounds almost like petty jealousy and no where did I read that Ms Larson was proclaiming to be a doctor. Her techniques and methods are proven and very good. I did not see anywhere in her book which I own, falsehoods at all. I am sorry, this is a great book and every new mother should have it in her home.
How wonderful this book is.......2001-01-27
I think this book offers much advice and help on the baby massage. I beleive the other person who wrote the other review is jealous and petty. No where in her book does Ms. Larson proclaim to be a medical doctor nor have I found any plagerism in the book. This book is of great help to all new mothers with their infants and from I have experience from the book helps greatly. I would give this book a high 5 star rating no matter what any other reviewer says. I have this book and use it and I would not be without it. I did not think she talked as though she had a medical license. This book is a must for all new mothers with infants. To accuse someone of what this other reviewer has done is duly unjust and unprofessional.
