A collection of essays about international trade seems destined to be a snoozer, but Paul Krugman, an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, somehow manages to write about an arcane subject in a lively manner that is actually entertaining. Krugman contends that many who are famed as experts on world trade actually misunderstand the subject completely, and he provides a startling commentary on some notables, from Lester Thurow to Ross Perot. Yet Krugman comes not merely to destroy; a reader can gain from his essays some real insight into economics, not to mention which economic commentators know their stuff.
Book Description
"Pop internationalists" -- people who speak impressively about international trade while ignoring basic economics and misusing economic figures are the target of this collection of Paul Krugman's most recent essays. In the clear, readable, entertaining style that brought acclaim for his best-selling Age of Diminished Expectations, Krugman explains what real economic analysis is. He discusses economic terms and measurements, like "value-added" and GDP, in simple language so that readers can understand how pop internationalists distort, and sometimes contradict, the most basic truths about world trade.
All but two of the essays have previously appeared in such publications as Foreign Affairs, Scientific American, and the Harvard Business Review. The first five essays take on exaggerations of foreign competition's effects on the U.S. economy and represent Krugman's central criticisms of public debate over world trade. The next three essays expose further distortions of economic theory and include the complete, unaltered, controversial review of Laura Tyson's Who's Bashing Whom. The third group of essays highlights misconceptions about competition from less industrialized countries. The concluding essays focus on interesting and legitimate economic questions, such as the effects of technological change on society.

Clear Thinking, Compact, and Ruthlessly Correct.......2007-05-21
I am an economics professor, and find this book an absolutely fantastic antidote to the alarmist crap (and dogmatic resistance to inconvenient facts) offered by foes of international trade. This book is easy to read and digest, and the data and ideas Krugman presents so clearly do not require any economic education beyond the ordinary undergraduate level. I hearitly recommend the book to anyone dazzled by fears of China or threats to U.S. manufacturing.
Easily the most entertaining part of this book is Krugman's treatment of Lester Thurow, Paul Kennedy and others who spent the 1990's extending wooly headed thinking to its local maximum. Modern writing on economics is awash in charlatans and cranks, and Krugman dispenses with them in a way to set the standard.
I re-read this book every few years and recommend it to all my grad students in economics as an example of communicating ideas with simple elegance.
Entertaining, provocative, flawed.......2005-03-13
Krugman is a good writer; so is the author of the book "New Ideas from Dead Economists" (that particular book).
Basically Krugman likes to be provocative, as he has shown as op-ed contributor for the NY Times.
His advocacy of game theory and non-linearlities in the Ricardo/Adam Smith model of free trade (which is still valid BTW), is welcome.
His thesis that since in both Japan and the US trade accounts for less than 15% of the total GNP of each country is a bit flawed, since, as any chessplayer will tell you, "the threat is greater than the execution". It's like saying Stalin had no effect on the fear factor in the Soviet Union because he only executed less than 5% of the population, or that the Exxon Valdez oil slick was minimal since it only constituted less than 0.1% of oil transported...
BTW, I have not read this book but that should not prevent you from recommending this review. Thank you.
NAFTA-boosting "liberal" hack.......2004-08-31
The joke here is that Krugman is convinced he can write. He ends his little intro with the smug assertion that "maybe economists can write after all," offering himself as proof. (Krugman cannot write well, but he has mastered the clumsy, undistinguished style of a bad lit professor---the kind of tenured mediocrity that dominates academic publishing---an accomplishment he's very proud of. To use his own favorite "emphasizing" gimmick: Krugman stinks---full stop.)
The punchline is that shortly afterward, The New York Times hired him. It was a match made in middlebrow heaven. (I should add that I do like the substance of Krugman's newspaper articles, if not the style. An enemy of the current White House is a friend of mine.)
As far as the economics go, he's pro-NAFTA and pro-"free trade" just like all establishment economists, and completely unwilling to critique the real forces at work in international markets. Don't waste your time.
Krugman and Competition.......2004-04-05
Paul Krugman is an intellectual economist with a rebllious streak. In "Pop Internalionalism" Krugman denounces ideas by some of the most well known and respected economists of the 20th century. Krugman uses a plethora of statistics to prove his point.
Krugman tries to prove that there is no economic competition between nations, or if there is it is nominal. His theories are alway well thought out and expressed but it difficult to believe everything he says. He tries to write for the common man, and is writing is very well expressed, intelligent, yet readible by most. It is easy for one to find themeselves rereading paragraphs if he/she does not have a strong understanding of international trade and national business.
Some may say that he is ahead of his time, others may say that his theories are rediculous, but I'll just say he is worth reading.
Awesome book.......2004-01-20
This is a great book - applying sound economics to our real-world policy issues.
Krugman's successful attempt to expose the flawed argument of the likes of Lester Thurow is wonderful. People like Thurow are more interested in bashing certain countries (e.g., Japan, Europe) and/or apologizing for others (e.g., People's Republic of China), with no economic/academic consistency. Hard to believe Thurow passes as an "economist"...

Book Description
Increasing population, expanding industry and commerce, and tourism are placing added pressures on an already highly-utilized coastal zone. This book, through a series of case studies, illustrates the variety of changes already made along the coastlines of the world. The examples used are mainly from China, Japan, The Netherlands, and the United States, all countries with extensively engineered shorelines. Modifications emphasized include those associated with protection against coastal erosion, building of artificial beaches and islands, reclamation for aquaculture and agriculture, and the construction of harbors. The information in this book should be useful for all planners and engineers involved in the construction of coastal engineering works and for students interested in coastal modification.

The opening pages of a Haruki Murakami novel can be like the view out an airplane window onto tarmac. But at some point between page three and fifteen--it's page thirteen in Kafka On The Shore--the deceptively placid narrative lifts off, and you find yourself breaking through clouds at a tilt, no longer certain where the plane is headed or if the laws of flight even apply.
Joining the rich literature of runaways, Kafka On The Shore follows the solitary, self-disciplined schoolboy Kafka Tamura as he hops a bus from Tokyo to the randomly chosen town of Takamatsu, reminding himself at each step that he has to be "the world¹s toughest fifteen-year-old." He finds a secluded private library in which to spend his days--continuing his impressive self-education--and is befriended by a clerk and the mysteriously remote head librarian, Miss Saeki, whom he fantasizes may be his long-lost mother. Meanwhile, in a second, wilder narrative spiral, an elderly Tokyo man named Nakata veers from his calm routine by murdering a stranger. An unforgettable character, beautifully delineated by Murakami, Nakata can speak with cats but cannot read or write, nor explain the forces drawing him toward Takamatsu and the other characters.
To say that the fantastic elements of Kafka On The Shore are complicated and never fully resolved is not to suggest that the novel fails. Although it may not live up to Murakami's masterful The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Nakata and Kafka's fates keep the reader enthralled to the final pages, and few will complain about the loose threads at the end. --Regina Marler

Customer Reviews:
Haruki Murakami Surrealist Genius.......2007-09-18
As a fan of the Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Murakami's Kafka on the Shore provides a surrealistic trip, and an even bigger treat to fans of his previous books. With memorable characters, original story, and Murakami's unorthodox prose and style, Kafka on the Shore is an unforgettable book. Throwing musical, social, and cultural references around, Kafka has an immediate feeling, and makes it seem all the more relevant. Comparing the book to Murakami's masterpiece Wind-up Bird Chronicle is bound to happen, and as a fan I'd have to say I enjoyed both equally.
Whimsical Mish-Mush of Everything Murakami Has Ever Written.......2007-09-12
The title above says it all, and perhaps the reason why I have responded so negatively to the book, is because I have read everything Murakami has ever written prior to Kafka on the Shore. I am noticing many of the reviews pertain to first-time readers of Murukami, and so I can completely understand how this blatantly esoteric miscellany of all his other works might come across as the beautiful dream-like introspection, first-time readers deem it to be. What startles me however, is all the heaping praise from the regular murukami enthusiasts. It has, honestly, got me wondering if I am not completely OUT-OF-MY-GATDAMN-MIND?!?! Haha..No Seriously.
The beauty of many of Murukami's prior works such as Wind-Up Bird..[an understated masterpiece] is the subtlety in the writing, the uniqueness of the different characters [in nuanced ways] and his ability to incorporate somewhat fantastical elements, but in a very balanced manner. All of that is missing in Kafka on the Shore, where you've got hair-brained clowns like Colonel Sanders and Johnny Walker monkeying around along the way to wherever this book is taking you.
If you've read Murakami before you know that kafka always plays central but lo-key in his books, yet here the book is titled as such and the point is made over and over throughout the storyline. If you've read Murakami before, this book should read like his personal writer's exercise book from which allegories, characters, and sketches of plot have been culled to create all the books he wrote before. In Summary, this book is the hither-thither effluvia swimming in his mind that he draws from to create masterful work. Its messy and we shouldn't be reading this, I prefer not to see the little man with the greasy comb-over pulling the ropes behind the velvet curtain....that's just me.
weird but kind of fun.......2007-09-07
A Japanese teenager flees his evil father and ends up far from Tokyo in a small southern town, hanging out at the Komura Memorial Library. He must sort out his oedipal destiny. Meanwhile, a Japanese oldster makes a parallel journey from Tokyo to the same town. A mysterious incident during WWII left him scatterbrained, but with the ability to speak with cats. It just gets weirder and weirder from there. I enjoyed the old guy's story especially. Longer review available at my Impatient Reader website; see my Amazon profile for the URL.
Uneven.......2007-08-14
This is the first time I've read Murakami. I'll give him another chance, as there are parts of this novel that were brilliant. A good chunk of it, unfortunately, was exceedingly pedantic.
The first third was interesting enough, and though I've learned to avoid anything that smacks of 'magic realism' I found that my favorite character was the Siamese, Mimi. I got caught up in the author's dream-like imagery. Murakami builds tension and mystery ...
... and then drops it all unexpectedly. A good third of the book consists of characters trading monologues on metaphor, the nature of genius, the nature of the soul, the nature of identity, et cetera and ad nauseam. The latter part is one soliloquy after another. None of these speeches were even in character - a fifteen year old runaway, a disembodied spirit, a truck driver, a fifty year old woman, and a mentally disabled old man all spoke with the same dull academic voice. It was maddening. I would have quit the book if the first half hadn't been so well written.
Murakami recovers in the final chapters, but the novel would have been stronger with a good 100 pages shaved off.
Interesting.......2007-08-10
This story doesn't really hold up in my opinion. It's also a little silly in its style here and there, but I like it still. I love the local feeling conveyed, and I do enjoy the outlines of the story. Just a little too pieced-together.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely the Best.......2001-04-06
I have only been doing this program for a little while, and it is as great as everyone says it is. Someone earlier said it is great for 16-45 year olds, but Im about to turn 15 and it works great for me. It would also work great for someone over 45, as their are at leat 10 different exercises for each body part to choose from. I suggest you stop whatever program you may be doing right now and try this one, I have looked into numerous other programs and attended camps and this is by far the best program I've found do far.
Year round training.......2001-02-12
I'm a woman in training for the IWFL (yes, there is women's football; check out californiaquakefootball.com.) This book has helped my training immensely. It covers just about everything. All lifts are expressed as a percentage of your maximum single-repetition weight (e.g., 8 x 60%)--which means I can use it as easily as the big boys. Bring a calculator to the gym, or else sit down and figure out the numbers beforehand, unless you are one of those people that can instantly calculate 60% of 130 to the nearest 5... well, you get the idea...
Buy this book & be bigger, stronger, faster. What else do you want?
Phenomenal.......2001-01-20
This book provides a great training plan for players aged 16 to 45. Very comprehensive, easy to use and well illustrated. Noticed results within 6 weeks. Includes not only weight and conditioning training, but also drills to improve agility, foot speed and balance. This reference can serve as the basis for designing a team or individual training program for any level of play.
Are You Ready?.......2000-07-31
Listen. This book is it. Drop any program you are on and follow this book. It involves everything from weight training to proper conditioning and even adds plyometrics for the complete combination of power, strenght, speed, agility, and stamina. I've never gained more mass and strength in one year in my entire life. This tells you exactly what to do and when to do it. This is so intense I recommend finding a mentor or a lifting partner to follow this with you to keep motivated. If football is your life like it is mine, buy this and you will become a better athlete. Period.
This One's All That.......2000-01-21
Man, I can tell you, if you what a complete workout plan, this one's all that and more. Especially the first two weeks of the off-season, resistance training workouts, if you go maximally through those workouts like Ben Cook describes, you are going to be left at the end having to have some one else take your shirt off. I mean you are all messed up, but in a good way. This book was exactly what I needed. I'm on week 7 right now, (I started at the end of my high school football season) and I already feel bigger and stronger. Mr. Cook says that consistency is the key, and so far I havn't missed a workout. It seems to really be paying off I think. It'll pay off for you too I'll bet. GET THIS BOOK!

Customer Reviews:
TOO GLoooooooooooooMY .......2007-07-27
For general, i liked this book. Yet, every single short stories
ended with a death and it really disturbed me a lot. If this were
not required for my summer project, i wuld not have read it.
Still, it certainly helped me in reminding the SAT vocabularies.
Fantastic novel if you want to learn SAT words or you love Poe.......2007-01-28
Kaplan has created a few books that help with the development of learning SAT vocabulary. This book, which has many of the well-known Edgar Allan Poe stories, does likewise, defining over seven hundred vocabulary words on the opposite page or in the glossary. The neat aspect of this book is that it not only defines the various difficult words on the opposite page, but also puts the words in bold in the text and underlines them. On the opposite page the words appear with a definition, a pronunciation key, and a few examples of synonyms. Students who find the vocabulary difficult in a Poe story can readily access this, and it makes comprehension that much easier.
The most important part, however, is the just the thrill of being able to read many of Poe's chilling classic stories in this format. Many of the stories that students read in grade school and high school are included such as "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum", and also a few of the lesser-known titles, such as "Hop Frog", "The Black Cat", and William Wilson."
The book itself is easy to carry around and has easy to read font which makes it a great buy. The stories are fantastic and the neat essence of this book is that you can read and learn vocabulary at the same time. Exceptional book!
very creative way to SAT study .......2007-01-09
excellent purchase; very helpful; an interesting approach to vocabulary and great literature.
Great way to study for the SAT.......2006-08-07
I loved reading this book and it was so much more fun to study SAT vocab words this way than by using flashcards. I told my friends about it so they could use it too. There are so many SAT words in the book and it's fun and easy to learn them.
