John Daly came up with a well written book that is interesting and informative on activity-based pricing. This book complements my knowledge and expertise on activity-based costing and I now know how to develop my prices based on a disciplined methodology for fixing the price.

John Daly avoids the mistake of focusing of maximizing revenue, advocated by some marketing professionals but rather puts the focus where it belongs namely maximizing profitability and ultimately shareholder value.

Any manager with responsibility for pricing will benefit immensely from reading this book.

Activity Based Costing Success Story.......2003-03-26

We have used the concepts outlined in John Daly's book to develop an activity based costing model. In fact, it has proven to be so useful that we are in its third revision. It is has been a critical tool for us to remain profitable during these difficult economic times. I do not know how we got along with out it!

Pricing for Profitability has allowed our company to intelligently quote new projects and answer a critical question during price negotiations - "Should I walk?". We have also found the activity based pricing concepts useful for evaluating the countless cost down requests we get from our customer and understanding what we can and cannot do. Valuable insights into profitable pricing.......2003-01-16

John Daly has written an excellent book with important insights into the desirability and mechanics of using Activity Based Pricing to achieve a profit-driven pricing model.

Why is this important?

If you really understand and properly allocate your costs and use that understanding to develop an Activity Based Pricing model for your products and/or services then you are pretty well assured of profitability, particularly as you increase unit volume. Of course, this assumes you can sell at a price higher than your fully loaded, properly allocated costs.

As Mr. Daly clearly describes, traditional cost allocation methods (not to mention back of a napkin allocations) result in problematical cost distortions and lead to potentially serious pricing errors.

Anyone with profit and loss responsibility, or who would like to get there, would be well served to buy this book, read it and take it to heart. It is well written, coherent and was a pleasure to read. Daly has struck an excellent balance in that the book is not so filled with technical accounting/finance detail it is inaccessible to a non-accountant and yet it has sufficient substance to be of interest to accounting and finance specialists.

As investment bankers we receive financing requests from many companies seeking capital that are not profitable or not as profitable as they could be. Activity Based Pricing is one of the disciplines we are introducing to our clients and prospective clients to help them achieve profitability or become more profitable in order to better position them to compete for capital.

Mr Daly's writing style is smooth and casual, and the book is loaded with common sense. His discussion of overhead allocation problems certainly makes the point that GAAP accounting practices lead to serious errors in cost accounting.

Full disclosure: I personally prefer an engineering model or standard cost approach, reality-checked with what might be called sampled-ABC: old fashioned time and motion studies.

We normally think of viruses in terms of the devastating diseases they cause, from smallpox to AIDS. But in The Life of a Virus, Angela N. H. Creager introduces us to a plant virus that has taught us much of what we know about all viruses, including the lethal ones, and that also played a crucial role in the development of molecular biology.

Focusing on the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) research conducted in Nobel laureate Wendell Stanley's lab, Creager argues that TMV served as a model system for virology and molecular biology, much as the fruit fly and laboratory mouse have for genetics and cancer research. She examines how the experimental techniques and instruments Stanley and his colleagues developed for studying TMV were generalized not just to other labs working on TMV, but also to research on other diseases such as poliomyelitis and influenza and to studies of genes and cell organelles. The great success of research on TMV also helped justify increased spending on biomedical research in the postwar years (partly through the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis's March of Dimes)—a funding priority that has continued to this day.

This historical account of research on a viral model system is educational and fun to read. It illuminates scientific research and lives of researchers, which should be of interest to scientists and laymen alike. Alot of emphasis is placed on personal scientific communication and the role government played in shaping post-WWII science.
The review is comprehensively researched and well written. The account highlights the role played by model systems in biological research as well as the impact it had on unexpected areas of bacteriology, genetic basis of heredity, etc.
Great fun to read.

This is not a "book", this is barely even a "pamphlet". Complete waste of money!

I was shocked when this "book" arrived. 24 pages hardly constitues a "Book". It is a brief pamphlet that gives a 101 of (mostly cross country) jump design. No instructions on how to "make your own jumps" here. Don't waste your money on this one.

This book is NOT for a person that want's to know how to build jumps by a step by step process. It has some information on how to build nice cross country fences. But, I was unable to use this book to build any arena fences. I would spend your money on something else!

Simple and complete.......2004-08-11

This book looks geared to children, but I found it insightful and detail oriented. It has great suggestions for building jumps, and includes the "finishing touches" a person might not think of on their own. The book is also well illustrated, giving lots of examples of easy-to build obstacles. One of my favorite references.

Nice general guide but little else.......2007-09-27

I purchased this book online while doing a massive repair job on a series of Engineering Manuals that were filled with writing errors and confusing information. This book is more like a handy dandy thesaurus but for real technical writing, it is virtually uselesss. The Microsoft Word Help Index has better examples. I found it to be confusing and actually a bit disorganized with tons of info that most people past English 101 should know, especially Technical Writers or those who describe themselves as being so. I don't recommend it.

Part style guide, word usage book, and techniques tutorial, this is a useful daily reference. It is clearly written, with lots of illustrations, cross-references, and examples that made it easy to understand each topic. However, the document types discussed need to be updated. The book focuses too much on correspondence related to job hunting and general business activity, materials that are better covered in other books. It contains too little discussion of the projects produced by technical writers today; especially lacking is discussion of online help and web content.

I have a 6 and an 8 year old and they love this book. I am also an ESL teacher of Kinder, 1st, and 2nd and the students enjoyed being read to in both English and Spanish. It is a story that brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it. It's a must have.

Feliz Nochebuena Feliz Navidad.......2006-01-11

I loved this book, the pictures, and the recipes. The text and pictures really helped me to understand how Christmas is celebrated in a culture which is different from mine, and presented a wonderful alternative to the "white christmas" prototype which is so prevalent in the United States today. The Christmas holiday time is a time that can be filled with wonder, and reading Sra. Presilla's soothing description of the holiday's of her childhood allowed me to travel to that world and to get in touch with a holiday time filled with warmth, good food, and family. I made the Seville Oranges marinade for out turkey, and everyone loved the way my kitchen smelled and the taste of the turkey. My children, ages 11 and 14, are learning Spanish in school so this was a very nice book for us to read as a family over the holiday and promoted some good discussion about the history of Cuba. We also learned some spanish vocabulary. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring new traditions for celebrating winter holidays.
