A Gem for Supplemental Studies.......2005-03-30
Schaum's Outlines consistently provide good topical studies. I have read several of their finance and accounting books to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. The "solved problems" present a myriad of practical questions / scenarios, followed by detailed solutions. I consider this format a great way to learn!
INVESTMENTS helps round out a finance students' or investment professionals' understanding of a variety of concepts.
The book excels at presenting topical material in an orderly way. Chapters nicely segue into others. Authors Francis and Taylor's early chapters cover various financial instruments (money market securities, common and preferred stock, corporate bonds, US securities, municipal bonds) and then progress to the financial environment in which these instruments operate.
The book explores financial statement analysis, portfolio management and analysis and also specific applications of short positions, hedging, arbitrage, security valuation, put and call options, and capital market theory.
I give this book a 4-star rating instead of 5 because the end-of-chapter problems (true false and multiple choice) are not supplemented with detailed explanations to the correct answer. This being said, I give much credit to the effectiveness of the Solved Problems throughout the book. They are practical and have enhanced my understanding of topics.
The book could be improved if the authors would provide problem-solving guidance using financial calculators. I use an HP 12-C calculator extensively and perhaps had an easier time solving problems with it rather than mulling through the algebraic formulas.
All in all, for the serious CFA candidate or student of investments, I highly recommend this book for supplemental reading. I've learned a lot and hope you do too!
Good introduction to the beginning student of investment.......2002-03-06
This book gives an excellent elementary introduction to investment techniques and concepts for the beginning student of business or economics. It is full of useful examples and solved problems as is characteristic of all books in this series, and it also gives adequate explanation of the terms and results in most areas of investment activity. Some of the parts of the book which are particularly well-written or helpful include: 1. The diagram of the corporate bond rating process . 2. The flowchart detailing a primary offering made through a syndicate of investment bankers. 3. The summary of the different security market indices. 4. The discussion of the "naive buy-and-hold strategy" and their use as benchmarks against which other investment strategies may be compared. 5. The discussion of the Dupont framework for analyzing equity returns and growth to reveal the sources of the growth of the firm. 6. The discussion of time-series comparisons for the ratios of a firm. 7. The discussion of the various problems involved when doing financial statement analysis. 8. The discussion on arbitrage. 9. The treatment of moving averages and the accompanying illustration of different moving averages. 10. The discussion of the random walk theory in the context of the efficient markets theory. The random walk theory has been been taken to be axiomatic by most financial analysts but has recently been challenged recently by empirical studies of financial data. 11. The treatment of the different levels of market efficiency, including the weakly efficient, the semistrong efficient, and the strongly efficient market hypotheses. 12. The discussion of the anomalies in market data that point to deviations from the efficient market hypothesis. 13. The chapter on portfolio analysis via the use of covariance and the treatment of the efficient frontier. 14. The treatment of the capital asset pricing model.
A Good Book For The Do-It-Yourselfer.......1998-09-11
A good book for someone who wants to learn the mathematics and mechanics of the various financial instruments.

.... just OK.......2006-03-13
I purchased a few books in preparation for the macro/micro econ CLEP tests. Among these books is the Schaums Principles of Economics book. From my experience, the book is not very thorough. Perhaps it will help you understand economics -- and for some people, I am sure it is a sufficient study aid -- but there are definitely better Econ books out there. The book that I am reading right now is Barron's Economics, which I find to be much more detailed. A significant difference between the two books is that the Barron's version is ~580 pages long (about 200 pages longer than the Schaums), but these pages are full of additional material that is not found in Schaums (in other words, it is not a waste of paper). Although both books seem to cover roughly the same material, I have noticed that the Barron's book includes some interesting chapters (such as Game Theory) that are not even mentioned in the Schaum's book.
One more thing that I find important is that the Barron's book has smaller dimensions than the Schaums book and is therefore much more manageable (and enjoyable to read).
Luckily, the used prices for this book are pretty low, so you can always do what I did and just buy both of the books! If you are interested in more books that are introductory material to economics, the following books have sparked my interest in the field:
The Elusive Quest for Growth (the troubles we have encountered in trying to develop struggling nations)
Economics in One Lesson (a succintly written book that covers basic economic fallacies)
Globalization and its Discontents (Yes, it is about Globalization... written by Stiglitz of the World Bank)
Hope this helps :)
Not up to Schaum's standards.......2006-02-02
This book is *ok*, but it is not as good as the other Schaum's books that I own (I own nearly 20 of them). I recomment this book ONLY if you are studying high school economics. If you are in college (or taking AP Economics or studying for CLEP), get the Microeconomics and Macroeconomics versions of this guide.
Disappointing.......2003-02-22
I used Schaum's Oulines to study for my accounting CLEP test, preparing for my MBA program. The Financial and Managerial Accounting titles were excellent. I have also used them to supplement my MBA texts in Operations Management and Financial Management. Overall, the series is lucid and easy to follow. I was expecting this title to follow suit.
Unfortunately, it did not.
The exposition is shoddy at best. Though I could solve the problems as they were given, I found myself struggling to understand economics. Since I was studying to CLEP test out of my prerequisite Micro and Macro Econ, I was concerned. After a few weeks, I purchased Harper Collins' College Outlines' Intro to Economics, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I could understand economics.
Buisiness Study Beginner from Korea.......2000-04-09
I am an old beginner in Economics. I just wanted to study to prepare my CMA certificate. Schaum's series are very popular in Korea, and maybe in the United States also for their selected many problems. That's why I chose this book for my preparation in Economics exam. Economics is very broad and practical studies. This book is written in 1995, 5 years ago from now. Someone feels it is too old to study. But I don't think so, because how much change in 5 years in Economics. The economy of a society is changing a lot in 5 years evidently but the Economics cannot be changed a lot in 5 years even in these E-days! I graduated from school longtime ago, and sometimes I was stupid in my school days because I just studied the text only without so many problems. I am now sure that the problem-driven study is the best way to conquer the complex theory. Good luck to you, and hope to find this book to help your understanding the Economics theory and extend to your real life.
Book Description
Outstanding for its easy-to-understand explanations of international economics, this guide covers all course fundamentals and supplements any class text. It takes students through the solution of hundreds of problems dealing with demand and supply in trade, the foreign exchange markets, flexible and fixed exchange rates and much more. Also includes practice midterm and final exams.
Book Description
This is a text for the traditional course in managerial economics offered in most business and economics programs. The primary aims of the text are:
To provide a unifying theme of managerial decision making around the theory of the firm.
To introduce an international dimension into managerial economics to reflect the globalization of production and distribution in today's world.
To present many new topics and managerial tools not discussed at all or discussed only superficially in other managerial econ texts.
To show how managerial decisions are actually made in the real world.

Fairly Useful Refresher for a Graduate Level Student........1999-06-15
To be fair to the true value of the book, I would like to say that this book is a very useful, concise and all-round assortment of all the pre-existing economic concepts and techniques in their simplest and the most intuition-friendly form.
An undergraduate reader might find it a little challenging, but for a graduate level reader already seasoned in every aspect of economics, this would not only be an easy reading, but a very clear and insightful guide to economic rationale behind the theories they had taken for granted w/o giving its practical application much thought.
The beauty of this book for a graduate student, I think, is not in the treatment of highly advanced and feindishly complicated top of the line economic theories, but in the simple and insightful plain-langauge treatment of all the technical aspects of economics commonly and conventionally practiced in the economics discipline.
The value of this book for an undergraduate student majoring in economics or business may not be immediately evident w/o working hard at it, but rather would probably be appreciated a lot later when they are more comfortable w/ matrix algebra, calculus and econometrics.
Overall I rate this book a rare piece that balances well in the middle of the road between both graduate and undergraduate level audiences.

Very complex with overlapping ideas.......1998-09-24
I am currently using the book for a managerial economics class and find the information confusing . Certainly a review of supply and demand (chapter 3) and its application of middle level managers is crucial and should have been placed before optimizing techniques (chapter 2). The assumption is the student or reader has just finished an introduction economics course and all the information is still fresh in the mind. Personally, I review all principles in this book with basic economic principles for a much clearer understanding of the topics.

Book Description
Sheep and wheat are the staples of dryland farms in the Mediterranean zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The commonly used dryland farming system introduced in the 1950s, however, is proving unsustainable. What is needed is an alternative system that is both environmentally sustainable and within the means of most farmers in the region. This book analyzes the quagmire of development on dryland farms to try to find some answers to these issues for scientists in agriculture and economics.

Book Description
The environmental crisis is global in scope, yet contemporary environmental ethics is centered predominantly in Western philosophy and religion. Earth's Insights widens the scope of environmental ethics to include the ecological teachings embedded in non-Western worldviews. J. Baird Callicott ranges broadly, exploring the sacred texts of Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism, as well as the oral traditions of Polynesia, North and South America, and Australia. He also documents the attempts of various peoples to put their environmental ethics into practice. Finally, he wrestles with a question of vital importance to all people sharing the fate of this small planet: How can the world's many and diverse environmental philosophies be brought together in a complementary and consistent whole?
Customer Reviews:
It's About Ethics and What We Do to the Land.......2001-03-14
I'm thrilled to find this paperback. Calicott tries to answer the ethical questions which have been ignored by all converts to the New Individualism.. The author is a philosopher and an excellent academic writer. It took me a while to get used to him. Since 1994 this work has been a guide for writers who deal with the ethics of land use. In the U.S. we perceive the land as a commodity. Calicott surveys the ecological ethics of many cultures, now overwhelmed by Euroculture. He starts in the Mediterranean Basin with the historical roots of our environmental attitudes and values. Then he covers the rest of the earth including those of the original settlers of the Western Hemisphere. But he also details "A Postmodern Evolutionary Ecological Environmental Ethic"and contrasts it with our traditional environmental actions. He admires the work of Hindu environmentalists as well as Buddists in Sri Lanka and Thailand. Where else can we learn about this?

Baseball and Billions Book Review.......2002-10-21
Baseball and Billions by Andrew Zimbalist is an okay book. In my opinion it is not an outstanding book because it just gave too many numbers and charts that quite didn't make sense to me, even though I do like the sport. While reading this book by Andrew Zimbalist I did learn some interesting facts about baseball that I never knew of before reading this book. Even though it might start off interesting, later in the book, in my opinion,it just gets a bit boring. Out of 5 stars I give this book 3 stars.
Insight into business of professional baseball.......1999-05-03
Very interesting insight into the economics that drive the business side of baseball. I recommend this to anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes business of baseball.
Updated to cover recent events.......1998-06-12
Updated to cover events such as Fay Vincent's dismissal as baseball commissioner, and the lawsuit over the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants' decisions not to move to Tampa

You'll find everything you forgot from school--as well as plenty you never even learned--in this all-purpose reference book, an instant classic when it first appeared in 1987. The updated version takes a whirlwind tour through 12 different disciplines, from American studies to philosophy to world history. Along the way, Judy Jones and William Wilson provide a plethora of useful information, from the plot of Othello to the difference between fission and fusion. It's not a shortcut to cultural literacy, the authors write in their introduction, but it's an excellent "way in" to the building blocks of Western civilization: the "books, music, art, philosophy, and discoveries that have, for one reason or another, managed to endure." Think of it as finishing school for your brain; study up and you'll gain a lifetime's worth of cocktail conversation--as well as a new list of books you simply must read.
Book Description
"An astonishing amount of information."
--Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times
When it was originally published in 1987, An Incomplete Education became a surprise bestseller. Now this instant classic has been completely updated, outfitted with a whole new arsenal of indispensable knowledge. Here's your chance to fill in the gaps left by your school years, reacquire all the facts you once knew then promptly forgot, and become the Renaissance man or woman you always suspected you could be!
What was so important about the Dred Scott decision? Why aren't all Shakespearean comedies necessarily thigh-slappers? What happened inside Plato's cave? What's the difference between a fade-out and a dissolve? Fission and fusion? Shi'ites and Sunnis? The apostles and the disciples? Is postmodernism dead or just having a bad hair day? And for extra credit, how do you tell deduction from induction?
An Incomplete Education answers these and thousands of other questions with incomparable wit, style, clarity, and brevity. American Studies, Art History, Economics, Film, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Science, and World History: Here's the bottom line on each of these major disciplines, distilled to its essence and served up with consummate flair.
In this new edition you'll find up-to-the-minute analyses of the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe, Indochina, and the Horn of Africa; the latest breakthroughs in cloning and gene splicing; brand-new takes on the economy, from disinflation to global competition; a look at the recent upheavals surrounding abortion rights, free speech, and the death penalty; and much, much more.
Ponder the legacies of eight American intellectuals (a couple of whom aren't even dead yet). Get a handle on 350 years of opera; the central ideas of Freud and five of his famous followers; the meanings of eighteen inscrutable-looking adjectives, from jejune to heuristic, numinous to otiose. Bone up on entropy and evolution. Take a whirlwind tour of English poetry from Chaucer to Yeats. Learn what to look for in Rubens or Rembrandt, The Birth of a Nation or Citizen Kane.
As delightful as it is illuminating, An Incomplete Education packs ten thousand years of culture into a single superbly readable volume. This is a book to celebrate, to share, to give and receive, to pore over and browse through, and to return to again and again.

Some People Have No Sense Of Humor.......2007-09-14
People who pan this book can't seem to grasp the fact that a reference book doesn't have to be dry and boring to be informative. Not only does this book provide a wealth of information about everything from chemistry to classical music, it is also laugh-out-loud funny!
I bought the first edition of this book years ago, and I still refer back to it often for the simple joy of reading it. I learn something new every time I pick it up.
Highly recommended!
Nothing quite as frustrating as an extended intellectual misfire.......2007-08-12
I appreciate brevity. Seems to me most commentary and analysis goes on too long. That was my attraction to this title, but that's not the problem here. Every topic is handled concisely though often not very effectively. The problem here is a twisted central view that produces sheer nuttiness like this books anachronistic take on Freud. I wish I had more time to elaborate, but, suffice it to say, you WILL be disappointed. This book is about a dozen re-writes from something worthwhile, and I wish I'd looked the reference section over a little more rigorously before wasting my money on this tome.
THIS BOOK DOES WHAT IT SAYS IT WILL ! !.......2007-08-03
I had given this book 4 stars in an earlier review, but AFTER READING OTHER REVIEWER'S COMMENTS (below) I am upgrading my rating to 5 STARS !!
I think that people need to read the book's introduction to see what the book is SUPPOSED to do before they slam it.
No, the book isn't going to be exhaustive or complete. How can it be? It's only one book and it's not even that thick!
The idea is just to learn enough of someone else's subject so you can navigate and know what they are talking about. You will need to read about it in more detail elsewhere, but at least this book will help you get started.
I did not find any SIGNIFICANT factual errors in the book. Perhaps in a book that attempts to cover all knowledge of the known (and unknown) world there might be an itty bitty error here or there, but I did not notice any. One assumes the authors used appropriate consultants for certain subjects. In the subjects that I am trained in, there were no errors.
Also, I did not find the authors to be condescending, nor did the humor interfere with my learning. In fact, my enjoyment and learning were increased.
That said, I would have to agree that completely serious, humorless people will not be happy with this book.
Disappointed.......2007-07-29
"Should have learned" is the key phrase in my review. Should have learned according to whose opinion is the question? This authors, apparently in order to sell books. I ordered this book, reviewed it and then returned it. It is packed with factual information, but 90% of it is irrelevant and you will never have the use for it. I am an elementary school teacher and I bought this to use as a reference for tid bits of information here and there to engage my students. There is nothing engaging about this book.
a great book.......2007-07-26
It doesn't fill in every gap, but it offers a chance to get some learnin' from two interesting, opinionated intellectuals.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Underdog Title Deserves More Love!!.......2007-08-23
This underdog title deserves more love!! It's not a mainstream hit like Bleach or Naruto, but it's worth the read. A rookie firefighter with that uncanny knack of being the one everyone is leary of, especially with the way he is.
The story is good and the art is quite good. I just wish I didn't have to hunt it down like a rare and priceless treasure. Finding the manga means either ordering it online, special ordering it from the local bookstore, or managing to snag some of the newest volumes at a convention.
So bring this one some more love so they'll bring it back to the shelves....:D
This is one of my favorite mangas of all time........2006-01-13
I recently got into mangas. Like a year ago. I have enjoyed the Initial D series, Naruto, One Piece, and quite a few others.
This manga is exceptional but what I dont understand is why they dont carry it in the stores. I live near a comic book store and they have everything you can imagine. Yet, they dont carry Daigo. So I order them online.
The story follows a young fellow that works as a firefighter. His name is Daigo and he works for Company M.
That explains the title. But the illustrations are top notch and story telling is a real page turner.
If you havent gotten into this series, I urge you to. It will be worth it. At least get the first one and if you dont like it, then just let it collect dust. But I assure you, you will like it if you like the other mangas mentioned above.
