This book is a good introduction to retirement plans. It explains the pros and cons of each type of plan in plain English. This book is recommended for people who want a good background before they talk with a plan administrator, financial planner or tax professional.
However, for people who want more detailed information on how each plan works, especially if you're a sole proprietor, I would suggest "Creating Your Own Retirement Plan: A Guide to Keoghs and IRAs for the Self-Employed" (Nolo Press, 2002) by Amy Delpo, John C. Suttle and Twila Slesnick instead.

Beyond 401(k)s for Small Business Owners.......2003-11-18
This book has a narrow audience and most people would have no interest. But if you, like I, own a small business: buy this book!!! The subject (keeping the money you have earned) is quite complex, with many different plans and programs. This book makes you aware of your options and shows you the steps you need to take to put each plan in action. Perhaps the best benefit of all is a review of the costs and complexity of each plan type. A plan that can shield you from taxes, but costs a fortune to put in place and maintain, has obvious limitations. But the salesperson trying to sell you that type of plan may not give you all the detail on the long term costs. If you own a business and ever plan to retire, buy this book.

"Mumbo jumbo best left to the professionals" is how I always felt when confronted with decisions on these topics. Atty Sifleet has made this an easy read and so understandable. Even a one-person company techie like me can figure it out. Congratulations Jean!

If you are a fan of Good to Great and Built to Last, you will think you found a precious gem. We all know that a vision is the cornerstone to success. If you don't know who you are, what exist for and where you are going - how could you ever be successful. This book spells out why vision is the critical point, in clear language.
Excellent Book.......2004-04-14
Beyond Entrepreneurship is an excellent book. Why? Most business books cover how to start companies, this book goes further. Collins & Lazier show you how to create a company that has a passion for what it's doing. They give guides on how to build a company from the ground up with ideals, beliefs, and goals. You learn why vision is so important to the overall goals of the company. Some of the things you'll learn in this book: How Sony stays ahead of the curve with its innovations. How 3M allows innovation to drive strategy. How Sam Walton used similar tactics but overtook his competition.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to build a great and enduring company.
Nothing new.......2003-10-22
The problem with this book, and many books of this type is that it is a clearly organized exposition on intuitive principles. I have read many books that resemble this one. They tend to be motivational and easily conceived, but the downside to the ease with which they are digested is that you don't really learn anything. This does not mean the book should not read, in fact the examples and organization clearly illustrate the basic structure of strategy. However, anyone familiar with the ideas should probably look for something a little more weighty.
All of that being said, this is how the book is organized thematically:
Chapter 1: Leadership Style
Chapter 2: Vision
Chapter 3: Strategy
Chapter 4: Innovation
Chapter 5: Tactical Excellence
The key topics of chapter 1 are the multiplier effect of leadership, the different style of leadership, and the elements of leadership (Ever Forward, Communication, Hard/Soft People Skills, Personal Touch, Focus, Decisiveness, and Authenticity).
Chapter 2 covers the benefits of vision, and the framework for vision (core values and beliefs, purpose, and mission).
Chapter 3 discusses the Four Basic Principles of Setting Effective Strategy, Setting Strategy, Internal Assessment, External Assessment, and the Four Common Key Strategic Issues that Face SMEs.
Chapter 4 is on the Six Elements that make an innovative company, and 8 managerial techniques to stimulate creativity.
Chapter 5 discusses how to take vision to create strategy which can then be used to formulate tactics, how to create an environment where people consistently exhibit tactical excellence, and a six part process to ensure excellence.
This book also periodically presents frameworks, models, and case examples to help illustrate key points.
Overall, it is a quick and easy read, that will illustrate basic tips to run a business. I would recomend anything written by Michael Porter or Peter Drucker for more conceptual ideas. For more books like this, the Harvard Business Review series should be considered.

I'm not surprised why this book have 5 stars...it deserves 10.
This book not only explains which are the key success drivers for an organization to become great, but also lets us know what to do in order to achieve results on each of these drivers. I work in the Planning division of a major insurance company...I have read lots of stuff about strategic planning, and I find the content of this book to be the one that captures the essence of successful planning.
According to the authors, any person involved in leading or transforming a business, should focus on 5 dimensions. In order to become truly successful, you should achieve a great performance on each dimension.These dimensions are:
1. Leadership Style 2. Vision, values and corporate culture 3. Strategy 4. Innovation 5. Tactical Excellence
There is a chapter for each point which are full of practical examples and stories about successes and failures.
I also recommend "Built to Last", from the same author.

The history of the rural West in modern times is in many ways the history of America. Family farms have vanished and the rise of cities and suburbs have made the West disproportionately urban since World War II. I Wish I Had This Book When I was Collecting Tiger Beetles!.......2004-03-22
John Acorn's "Tiger Beetles of Alberta: Killers on the Clay, Stalkers on the Sand" is one of those rare books that incorporate accurate information and enthusiasm, plus fantastically beautiful illustrations. This is a book that ANY tiger beetler should own- even if they don't live in Alberta. Seventeen of the nineteen species that Acorn describes are also found in New Mexico and I suspect that this book will serve well for our north central tier of states. While collecting is mentioned, Acorn goes further- toward an appreciation of the living tiger beetle and its behavior.
John Acorn is in a class by himself. I was first introduced to his TV program "The Nature Nut" at a meeting of the American Arachnological Society in Tucson, Arizona. The episode "Scorpions: They're Real Cool" was the hit of our informal slide and film show. It made me search out and buy as many of his arthropod shows as I could find. Between his expertise and his dry humor he is one of the few people that I've encountered who can totally enthrall audiences from kindergarten to retirement. I later met him in person at a meeting in Rio Rico, Arizona, and found him to be as open and interesting to talk to as I thought he would be.
I could find only minor errors in his tiger beetle book (mostly nit-picking errors of omission in tiger beetle ranges for a few- like C. longilabris and C. pupurea in the New Mexico part of their ranges) and the amount of information he packs into this slim volume is astounding.
I recommend this book highly if you have any interest in tiger beetles, or just like beautiful things!

If it wasn't for John, I may never have learned to take entomology both as seriously and as lightly as I take it now! This is the field guide you've been waiting for, combining great photos and drawings with distribution data and colourful anecdotes. Quite possibly the ultimate tiger beetle book! John Acorn's "Tiger Beetles of Alberta" is a model of the kind of book that serves the needs of amateur naturalists and professional biologists wanting to identify the plants and animals they encounter. Since most of the literature is either arcane or (more often) unavailable, books like Acorn's fulfill a real need. The text will not only allow the reader to identify the beetle species, but it also provides information about the beetle's ecology, behavior, and related topics. Range maps also help the reader identify the species. The photographs and drawings are spectacular. Yet two "quirky" features distinguish this book: first, the haiku Acorn has composed for each species; second, the anecdotes he provides about tiger beetle people. The book is not only informative; it is entertaining. Not much swing instruction going on here. This book is primarily for the player who can hit good shots and has above average skill but is still putting up disappointing numbers. It's not really earth shattering stuff. You know that by trying for eagles on par 5 you end up brining bogey and worse into play. You know that when you are in trouble the correct play is to just get back to the fairway. If you are like me you just need someone like Raymond Floyd to tell you these things before you listen! He will tell you these things and plenty more in this great book. It's not watered down a bunch of boring anecdotes - just the goods from a guy who knows how to go low.

As posted previously, this book isn't about swing mechanics, but about playing smarter golf and being realistic about your game. I think this book would be extremely beneficial to the beginning golfer and would make a great gift. It's a quick read and well written. I try to read it a couple of times a year to remind myself to play within my abilities and keep a good attitude.

Best Book on Scoring and Playing with Confidence.......2006-08-21
I am a low handicap golfer who grinds to shoot in the low 70's. Typically, I hit 7-8 greens in regulation. After reading Floyd's book, I played a round and hit 14 greens in regulation. The next round I played in a vicious wind and shot 77. Better than scoring low, these were the two most comfortable rounds I've ever played.
Mr. Floyd's advice is about scoring. There is little about swing mechanics. I will read the first five chapters over and over. After reading these chapters, my mind is calm and clear. If I take this mindset to the course, I am fully confident that I will play my best golf that day.
I own over 40 books on golf. This book is at the top of my list. If I had this book when I was learning the game, I feel I would have saved years in lowering my score. Follow Mr. Floyd's advice and lower your score.
Very helpful .......2006-03-13
Floyd is still one of the best chippers and shot gamers in golf. The PGA pros when interviewed say the same thing. He has a lot to share and much of it is "tough love" to us amateurs--don't over-club, be realistic with your average distance not your best distance etc. He is a very clever golf course manager and it shows in his advice. His description of his early days when he was a risk-taker and losing, while trying to be like Arnie, was very interesting. Once he decided to manage his risks around the course and be himself he became a big winner. This would certainly not be the first book for a beginner (you first need to learn to swing) but this should be a fairly early addition if you want to score well.

The book seems to be geared more to the single digit handicapper rather than a high handicapper. I find the book dated and the author to be patting himself on the back too often.

I'm currently a junior in college and can honestly say that this book is awesome. One of my biggest problems was that my eyes would dance around the page (like to stuff I just read) and I would forget what I was reading.
This book teaches you awesome tips like the two hand pull, phrase reading, and other things to not only read faster but drastically help comprehension. Your comprehension might take a dip after learning the tips, but if you keep it will rebound considerably. The race car analogies get a little tiresome, but help keep an upbeat tempo. When I started, I was at about 200 wpm, now I'm at about 600.
A book that really works..........2006-02-25
I am allergic to books that make big claims, and the title of this book did not look so promising. It was recommended by Julie Morgenstern in her book "Time Management From the Inside Out", and although I was suspicious, I did buy this book mainly because it was not too expensive.
Now, having worked through this book, I must confess: the book is worth every penny! This is simply a wonderful book that makes you read really a lot faster in only minutes a day. The title tells the truth! Marks-Beale gives great tips (most of which I had not found in other speed-reading books) and the exercises are great. I find myself browsing through this book over and over again.
One of the charms of the book is that Marks-Beale does not - unlike some other books - give much detail about why we read slowly and how speed-reading works. No, instead she simply starts immediately with the drills and the tips that, with some effort, give results in a matter of days or less. Not so much theory, but practice!
This is a book that I warmly recommend to PhD-students and colleague-professors at my faculty (Theology). And since (as a philosopher of religion) I have to read lots and lots simply to keep up with the literature, I constantly practice the things I learnt from this book.

Practical techniques........2006-01-20
I was also not sure that this book will benefit me, though I thought it might be helpfull.
Truly, I think that speed of my reading at least doubled after reading and upplying techniques of this book. This book not only teach you how to read faster but also open your mind to a total new way of reading. You do not have to read word by word, nor you have to spend long long time reading one news paper.
Understanding is different story, but your brain can get used to new and smarter way of reading.
It is like buying Honda car after using bycicle for long long time.

I'm a second-year law student and I often have
overwhelming amounts of reading to do.
I was the typical word-by-word reader. Afterall, this is all I had been taught. When I realized it was taking forever to get through some of my reading assignments, I went looking for help. I stumbled across your book and it has helped me tremendously.
I would say it doubled my reading speed. This is great, considering you cannot skim material in law school - catching on to detail is what it is all about.
