Book Description

Why are elite jewelers reluctant to sell turquoise, despite strong demand? Why did leading investment bankers shun junk bonds for years, despite potential profits? Status Signals is the first major sociological examination of how concerns about status affect market competition. Starting from the basic premise that status pervades the ties producers form in the marketplace, Joel Podolny shows how anxieties about status influence whom a producer does (or does not) accept as a partner, the price a producer can charge, the ease with which a producer enters a market, how the producer's inventions are received, and, ultimately, the market segments the producer can (and should) enter. To achieve desired status, firms must offer more than strong past performance and product quality--they must also send out and manage social and cultural signals.

Through detailed analyses of market competition across a broad array of industries--including investment banking, wine, semiconductors, shipping, and venture capital--Podolny demonstrates the pervasive impact of status. Along the way, he shows how corporate strategists, tempted by the profits of a market that would negatively affect their status, consider not only whether to enter the market but also whether they can alter the public's perception of the market. Podolny also examines the different ways in which a firm can have status. Wal-Mart, for example, has low status among the rich as a place to shop, but high status among the rich as a place to invest.

Status Signals provides a systematic understanding of market dynamics that have--until now--not been fully appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Exploration of the Dynamics of Organizational Status.......2005-10-03

Perhaps more than anyone, Joel Podolny has explored the social dynamics of organizational status. Contrary to much conventional wisdom, organizational status reflects much more than an organization's quality (although that certainly is part of it). Podolny shows us why this is so and some of its implications.

I like the straightforwardness of the writing, and the insight into the appeal of the game. Alas, if you're an outsider hoping to learn the game from scratch, you're going to have a lot of trouble--after teaching you rudimentary terms, the writers start describing the game as if you've been watching it all your life, tossing barely-introduced jargon around all over the place. I was really disappointed that the one aspect of the game I was most interested in (the actual GAME) was so poorly rendered.

5 out of 5 stars You will know football even though you are not an American.......2005-01-30

I'm a Chinese girl and never watched any American football games in Hong Kong until I married to an American and moved to United States one and half years ago. He is a football fan and he keeps track his team every day, not to mention especially during the regular season every Sunday.

I started to watch football games with him, and I liked it a lot. Now, I understand why so many American like football. I asked many questions while I was watching the game, because I wanted to understand it more. Therefore, I read this book last year and it gave me a lot of basic information in an easy way. More interesting is the book gives many statistics and facts that I was impressed by the football business. Anyone has no idea about football, this book can help.

Now, my husband was surprised that I knew football so well and we discussed football a lot during the regular season this year. This book helps us to have more conversation topics.

Former MVP quarterback Joe Theismann explains even the most complex aspects of a complex game in a conversational style with plenty of easily understandable illustrations and diagrams in this entertaining addition to the ever useful Idiot's Guide. Beginning with the lure and lore of the sport, he moves quickly downfield to the elementary rules and basic fundamentals of play before going deep into the technical aspects of the strategies behind nickel packages, zone blitzes, and special teams. Duh, He talks to you like you've had a concussion.

This book seems OK at first, but after reading through the first few pages I discover how immature Thiessman's writing is. Half the time he either talks to you like a three-year-old or like your an NFL Play Coordinator.

It does explain some misconceptions but for the most part is either insultingly stupid or flatulently complicated.

"YARDLINES: These are the long white lines running accross the field with numbers on them.

                >>>>Thank you, Sherlock Holmes.

"ENCROACHMENT: This penalty is defined when a member of the offensive line enters the neutral zone."

                >>>>What the hell is the neutral zone? There is no previous explanation.

"To execute this play have the quarterback snap the ball watching for a blitz, and looking for an open wide reciever in the red zone, but prepare himself for a rush." >>>>Huh? Can I get this in English?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2000-08-16

Even though I've been watching football (on TV and in person) for a couple of decades, I knew there was a lot I didn't understand. Never having played the game above the playground level, I never really learned the roles of different positions, and didn't understand the depth of planning that goes into designing an offense and defense.

Theisman and his co-writer Brian Tracy certainly know both the big picture and the intimate details of football. They've also found a clear writing style and organization with which to make their presentation. From the very basic rules of the game to more complex dissertations on players' roles, play construction and coaching strategies, the authors provide concise, useful information. Theisman's asides about players and game history provide good context and will enhance your appreciation of games that you watch.

Football experts may not glean much from this book, but even those who've played (or play) the game may find it useful to read up on other positions and areas. Those who are new to the game or just passing fans will find this to be very educational.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Novice and All-Madden Football lovers.......1999-12-29

I found this book funny and entertaining. There are idiot proof diagrams and easy to understand concepts. Joe Theisman teaches you lots of things in this book. I loved it and I'm sure you would love this book too.

4 out of 5 stars He, She, It.......2005-12-29

I bought this book because I haven't played soccer since I was a kid so I had some catching up to do. The book is very easy to follow and understand though the writer was constantly referring to the reader as "she" which I found to be both annoying and distracting.

                3 out of 5 stars Needs a referee reviewer.......2001-07-21

A review by a referee would have caught several mistakes in certain "legalities"...

She says "The end lines are also sometimes referred to as goal lines..." The actual name of that line is the goal line. She says the lines on the sides of the field are "called sidelines (although they are sometimes referred to as touchlines)". The actual name of that line is the touchline.

The correct names of the lines of the field are to be found in the FIFA "Laws of the Game" (the rules that govern soccer worldwide). If you want to play the game, learn to use the correct terminology of the game.

She says the height of the corner flags is a maximum of 5 feet. It's supposed to be a "minimum" of 5 feet. It's a safety issue...you don't want a player stabbing himself on a short flag.

Her explanation of the important Offside law is incorrect. To begin with, the name of the infraction is "offside" (there is no "s" at the end). What she says states as the offside rule is actually the definition of "offside position," which is not illegal. There's no discussion of "offside position" and "participation". 5 out of 5 stars Need a soccer book - this is definitely the one.......2000-08-24

As a former collegiate soccer player, a current adult player trying to recapture her youth, and a person working in the sports industry, I have recommended this book to everyone trying to get a grasp on the game. Yes, it's more than just a ball and a couple of goals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, any age, who wants to learn more about the game. It's especially good for the growing number of soccer parents. As for that other reviewer - I totally disagree with the assessment, with one exception. The author was completely accurate with the offsides description -- whoever drew one of the diagrams clearly missed out on the author's lesson. Other than that, the book was great.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Guide to Soccer!.......1999-11-28

I read this outstanding book before embarking on my first soccer coaching experience. Although I played competitive soccer for twelve years, I thought I should get updates on any changes as well as get some coaching tips. This book was perfect! It's extremely well written, accurate, and informative. In addition, the layout is easy to navigate, and the glossary and index make finding answers to questions a breeze. I would recommend this book to a wide variety of people, from coaches, to players, to soccer moms, to soccer trivia fans. A great book!

5 out of 5 stars RIGHT right right right right!.......1999-11-17

As a new youth soccer coach, I was looking for a book that would give me quick and easy guidance on understanding soccer and also give me some excellent tips on coaching. This book was perfect! It provided a tremendous amount of information without getting too detailed in any specific area. The book begins with the basics and then takes you through the rules, formations, and strategies. It then provides wonderful information for coaches and parents by discussing training, drills, and ways to run a successful practice. As an athlete, I have read many books on the teaching of sports and this is one of the best. The author injects humor and quick fun facts throughout to keep it very interesting. If you are a new soccer coach, a parent of a child playing soccer, or just want to learn about soccer, this book is excellent. As for the review from the reader from Canada, he is not accurate. Remember, except for hockey, Canada has a dreadful reputation in sports - soccer included.

These books are an absolute for any/every man. For a refresher or to learn anew a Gentlemans library won't be complete until he has them. They are Direct, never having to read endless dialog to get to the answer. A Gentleman has an obligation to keep his enviroment classy yet comfortable, Gentlemanners Collection will sum up every situation for any/every man.

                      3 out of 5 stars Common Sense.......2007-01-01

There are a few pearls in these books, but not many. "As a Gentleman Would Say" is the worst of the bunch. Unless you are completely lost in most social situations it is not worth your time. If you see a friend for the first time in years, and they've gained a good deal of weight, and you would say "WOW Frank, you must've gained 25 pounds! How'd you do it?" you may need to read this book, otherwise skip it. How to be a gentleman is cute, but I for one am not going to keep a linen hanky in my pocket to give to everyone that sneezes. Many of the tips are obscure and would only be of intrinsic value to the man as they would most likely be overlooked in the company of anyone but an etiquette instructor. A Gentleman Gets Dressed up is pretty much useless. There is nothing in the way of pictures and some things are in complete contradiction to Dressing the Man. You be much better served by purchasing Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion and buying How to Be a Gentleman by itself if you have to have it.

                      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!.......2005-12-08

I purchased these books as both ice breaker to guests in my home, but also to give a good reading. Well the books are a simple read, one a day. The information contained in these books is absolutly worth its weight in gold. In fact when put into to practice, you almost immediatly become memorable as one who values certain lost traditions.

As a conversation starter, well, the females in the group will pick one up, flip through and eventually make a remark such as "why don't you ever do that".....

I highly rate this book as it is a truely wonderful (although trivial to certain people) book. An art that was lost, of on the fall could certainly be picked back up again.

                      5 out of 5 stars Leon Garfield's funniest book.......2003-12-02

Timid schoolmaster Mr Brett is striving to teach his class Ancient History. He tells them of the Spartan custom of exposing unwanted infants on the mountain side (looking fearfully at the boys in front of him, he wonders why the custom was ever abandoned). One of the boys, the crafty harris, comes up with the idea of exposing his own infant sister, Adelaide, to see if she will be suckled by a she-wolf (or, this being England in the Regency period, a fox). He enlists the help of his slow-witted but admiring friend Bostock, and together they expose Adelaide and wait hopefully for the fox to turn up. Unfortunately, the baby is rescued by romantic Tizzy Alexander, the schoolmaster's daughter (loved hopelessly by Mr Brett) who takes her home. Her father suspects the worst when his daughter turns up with a baby, and challenges her bumptious admirer Ralph Bunnion to a duel. The hapless Mr Brett finds himself acting as second to both participants. Meanwhile poor Adelaide ends up ina foundling hospital. As Harris and Bostock try desperately to get her back, more and more characters are drawn into a complex web of misunderstandings and deceits. This is an absolutely hilarious book, told in Leon Garfield's inimitable style.

                      5 out of 5 stars A realy good book!.......2002-10-17

Two boys set out with baby Adelaide, to see if a wolf will adopt her so they might become "famous". Their plan turns into a huge adventure, when Adelaide is taken all the way to the poorhouse. I like the book especially because of the "love".Their is love between the school teacher,Brett, and the beautiful lady Tizzy.I love romance, and adventure. There is also some violence in the story, but not much.It is a very enchanting 16th century book. I recommend it to all who like romance, adventure, and action.

5 out of 5 stars A Kind of Insane Charles Dickens.......2002-06-03

Oh how I wish someone had told me about Leon Garfield when I was a child! I would have just eaten these books right up. Garfield writes beautifully and wittily, with well drawn, likable characters and intelligent dialogue. But his plots! Dear lord, the plots. "The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris" features the classic Garfield plot structure of beginning with about a dozen characters, sending half in one direction and the other half the opposite way to gradually form a giant circle. Way leads unto zany way as the people in his decidedly eccentric world try desperately to stave off their respective fates, to no avail. The good guy gets the girl, the bad guys end up confused, and Bostock and Harris go on to "Night of the Comet", (which if memory serves is actually a prequel, but never mind). If you have never read one of Leon Garfield's loopy tales, please do so immediately. You won't regret it. And if you like "The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris" you absolutely MUST read "Black Jack", Garfield's masterwork. Murderers, con-men, insane asylums, the end of the world- it's not be to missed.

5 out of 5 stars Of Bostock and Harris and other things ...........2001-04-12

This is a book by a well-known writer of novels for young adults, but it isn't really a book for children.

It's a comic tale of two troublesome boys, Bostock and Harris, from Dr Bunion's Academy in England in the early 1800s, who decide as an experiment to leave Harris's baby sister, the young Adelaide of the title, exposed to the elements just like the babies of ancient Sparta were (this is just the kind of thing kids pick up from history lessons). They expect a she-wolf to come along to suckle her, but instead .....

The book features a wonderful cast of funny characters, my favourites being the scheming and devious Major Alexander, who can't look anyone in the eye, and the awful enquiry agent, Mr Selwyn Raven, who sees a spider web of sin in the world and notes it all down on ever-increasing bits of paper.

There is adventure, romance, and some very funny happenings in a delighfully told tale that will have you smiling your way through. Very highly recommended for all readers.
