Book Description
Covering both Micro and Macroeconomics in one concise paperback volume, this book shows readers how to think and act like an economist by showing them how to use economic concepts in their everyday lives and careers.
Organized around the Five Key Principles of Economics—The Principle of Opportunity Cost, The Marginal Principle, The Principle of Diminishing Returns, The Spillover Principle, and The Reality Principle.
For economists and those making financial decisions and analyses.
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction..........2003-10-26
Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Oregon State University, and Steven Sheffrin is dean of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. Together they bring a wealth of practical and teaching experience in the field of economics to this text, which serves as a one-semester introduction to economics for undergraduates, both those who intend to continue as majors in economics, and those who simply want an overview of the subject to enhance their other studies.
This book turns on five major principles: The Principle of Opportunity Cost; the Marginal Principle; the Principle of Diminishing Returns; the Spillover Principle; and finally, the Reality Principle. In each chapter, these key principles are repeated and emphasised. There is actually a logic to economics (although it is not always presented in an intuitively logical format).
O'Sullivan and Sheffrin work on a pedagogic principle of Active Learning (perhaps derived from the sound of snoring coming from the student body during at least one of the lectures from one of the authors!). These involve examples and exercises that require thought and detective work, as well as applying the tools that are demonstrated in the chapters. The examples drawn are often from real life situations, to give them grounding in reality (it always helps if an instructor can answer the question, 'when am I ever going to need this?').
The instructional set includes web applications, CD-ROM and video aids, and various print supplements.
A typical semester lasts 15-16 weeks. This text is organised into 17 chapters, some of which can be combined as joint lessons. They cover all the primary economics issues, such as supply and demand, production, elasticity issues, monopoly and competition issues, labour market issues, unemployment, inflation, and more advanced ideas about monetary and fiscal policy, with the beginnings of economic theory and philosophy (particularly Keynesian economics). There are chapters that deal with 'glamourous' issues such as international trade and finance, which may or may not be used, depending upon the pacing of class.
The layout of the book is visually interesting. The use of photography and multi-coloured backgrounds, text and charts sets this apart from the standard, dry economics tome. The writing is sharp and concise, to keep students from getting lost in supposedly erudite (but often confusing) treatises on economic ideas.
The one drawback I have noticed as a tutor of economics is that the graphs and charts introduced early on need more explanation. They are explained mathematically and theoretically, but there is an intuitive leap that doesn't seem to be happening from text to student - the understanding of supply curves, demand curves, and other similar graphing tools remains a bit of a mystery until demonstrated repeatedly (for example, questions I answer frequently include, 'if demand goes up, why does the curve go down?' and 'why is it called a curve if it is a straight line?'). More work with this part of the text early in the text would be helpful.

Customer Reviews:
5th edition.......2004-06-24
The 5th edition has seen a complete revision of the illustrations, which all were replaced by a better grade of line-drawings. This makes for a much more likable book.
Wildly overpriced.......2000-12-01
As a guide to the trees of N-America (exclusive of Mexico and tropical Florida) it seems obvious to compare it with Sargent's "Manual of the Trees of North America (exclusive of Mexico)", now available as a Dover-reprint. The present book appears an abbreviated and updated version of the earlier one, with distribution maps the most noticeable addition. However I find the earlier one definitely more attractive, if only because the line-drawings are so much clearer in the old book. In Preston's book the reproduction of the drawings is very black, and hence unclear.
When comparing this with the magnificent "Trees_of_Canada" by John Laird Farrar (aka "Trees_of_Northern_United_States_and_Canada") the book by Preston looks shabby indeed. The most kindly thing to be said would seem to be that this is vastly overpriced. Surely the USA can do (a lot) better than this for its trees?
Very useful!.......2000-09-03
This 400 page book is a no-nonsense identification manual for north American trees exclusive of Mexico and tropical Florida (except for 35 species of hawthorn and 16 usually shrubby willows). It is adequately illustrated by drawings and distribution maps. Most of the species are described (habit, leaves, fruit, twigs, bark, general), some of the more uncommon ones are only mentioned in the keys. Although the book claims to use language as simple as possible I can imagine that it is the botanists who come to terms with it most easily.
A real drawback can be found in one of the introductory keys (species with toothed leaves) where the identification relies heavily on fruit characters. This is no doubt scientifically accurate, but not very practical in the field. A less rigorous, user friendly approach would be preferable.
I recommend the book to people with botanical training who will be happy to find the species arranged according to families and not according to the position of leaves. I liked the book because of its mostly very useful keys and because it presents all the north American trees in one easy-to-carry volume

Book Description
How did life originate in the universe? How did it all start after the creation of matter and the formation of elements in the stars? What are the pathways from the first organic molecules in space to the evolution of complex life forms on Earth and perhaps elsewhere? And how will it all end? The Universe itself sets the stage for the very interdisciplinary field of astrobiology that attempts to answer such questions, the central one being: What is the (cosmic) recipe for life? Currently there are only very few known elements in this vast mosaic. This book bridges a gap in the literature by bringing together leading specialists from different backgrounds who lecture on their fields, with close relevance to astrobiology, providing tutorial accounts that lead all the way to the forefront of research. The book will thus be useful for students, lecturers and reseachers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Topics in astrobiology.......2004-11-24
This is a set of papers primarily of interest to astrobiologists. One might want to use it as part of an astrobiology course for graduate students.
The articles are fascinating. We start with a section on organic material in space. We learn about extrasolar planets, including "hot jupiters." We read a discussion of habitable zones for these extrasolar planets. And we look at a scenario of life being transferred from Mars to Earth.
Next is a section on water: how essential it is for life, and what it would mean to have life without water. We look at the geomorphological record of water-related erosion on Mars, and we see a discussion of tides on Europa. And we look at life in cold water, hot water, and salty water.
Third is a section on radiation and life. That includes magnetic shielding from cosmic rays, ultraviolet radiation, and effects of cosmic rays. The fourth section is about gravity: gravitational effects at the cellular level, and effects of gravity on plants and animals. And the fifth section is about complexity and life: scaling phenomena, molecular self-assembly, and what it would be like to look for fossils in an extraterrestrial environment. The book concludes with a paper about forthcoming space missions relevant to astrobiology.
This book has plenty of useful material for astrobiologists!

Book Description
This detailed chronicle looks at the lives, times, and deaths of the biggest names that the sport of professional wrestling has produced. Picking up where Tributes: Remembering Some of the World's Greatest Professional Wrestlers left off, author Dave Meltzer focuses on sports entertainment's most recent and high-profile losses, including Road Warrior Hawk, Curt Henning, Elizabeth, Stu Hart, Tim Woods, Davey Boy Smith, Gorilla Monsoon, Terry Gordy, Wahoo McDaniel, Johnny Valentine, The Sheik, Freddie Blassie, and Lou Thesz. Tributes II: Remembering More of the World's Greatest Wrestler also offers expanded versions of some of the most popular profiles from Tributes, including Owen Hart, and Andre the Giant. Offering candid and detailed accounts of bona fide wrestling legends and a foreword by Bret Hart, Tributes II takes its place among the most important books ever written on the world of pro wrestling.

So many greats died so young. WHY?.......2007-06-30
For Chris Benoit (1967-2007)
Young & strong beautiful one
One that we embraced so close
Is gone
Was torn away
With candles with flowers
He was one of ours
One of ours
Why don't you let him be?
He's gone
We know
Give his mother & father peace
Your vulture's candor
Your casual slander
Will murder his memory
He's gone
We know
And it's nothing but a tragedy
Lay to rest your soul and body
Lay beside your name
Lay to rest your rage
Your hunger and amazing grace
With candles, with flowers
You were one of ours
One of ours
I saw cameras expose your life
I heard rumors explode with lies
I saw children with tears
Cry and crowd around the sight
Of where you had collapsed that day
Where your last breath & word
Had been sighed
Where your heart had burst
Where you had died
I saw how they were lost in grieving
All half-believing you were gone
The loss and pain of it
Crime and the shame of it
You were gone
It was such a nightmare raving,
"how could we save him
From himself?"
(Natalie Merchant - River)
The Legends Of The Ring And The Touching Tributes.......2007-04-17
Dave Meltzer - through his Wrestling Observer Newsletter - has brought to fans the true business of professional wrestling as seen through the eyes of sources in the corporate boardrooms and the trust he has obtained over the years with wrestlers worldwide.
But pro wrestling has a rich tradition that is oftentimes overlooked or quickly forgotten after a star from yesterday passes away. Some of Meltzer's most powerful writing has been remembering the greats who have passed, as his candid accounts of their lives inside the squared-circle and outside the arena truly brings the legends to life, perhaps for the first and/or last time.
In Tributes II, his second book of profiles from the newsletter, Meltzer includes his articles on Lou Thesz, The Sheik, Johnny Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Rick Rude and Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig, along with an expanded tribute to Andre the Giant.
The forward is written by Bret Hart and the book touches his family in such a tragic way. The lives of his father - Stu Hart - and brother-in-law, Davey Boy Smith, are chronicled by Meltzer, along with a new profile on Bret's brother, Owen Hart, who tragically fell to his death before a sold-out arena and cable TV pay-per-view audience in a risky stunt that went so terribly wrong.
Included in the book is a one-hour DVD where Meltzer provides additional information on the wrestlers. The DVD alone is worth the purchase price.
Each profile is a touching tribute that celebrates the lives of those who entertained with style and class.
Another Strong Outing from Dave Meltzer.......2006-07-24
A solid, well written work for those interested in the real people behind the characters of wrestling. A well considered foreword from Bret Hart showing how far things have come from the "kay fabe" days.
Mr. Meltzer's book puts a very human perspective on the individuals who punish themselves physically and mentally and the unfortunate toll that befalls some of these athletes/entertainers. A very good read for those with even a casual interest in wrestling.
Tributes II........2006-06-30
I have read Tributes II once in Barnes and Nobles and it was a great read. Professional Wrestling has always lost wrestlers in their prime. This is a perfect example of those we lost to heart failure, overdoses and living the hard life. The exception was Owen Hart, who died very tragically in the ring due to a faulty harness, basically doing what he did best, WRESTLING. As I read the book, and the beautiful tributes by Mr. Meltzer, I shed a few tears and remembered these men we lost as wrestling fans. Two more names can be added to those tributes, as we lost the Big Boss Man in 2004, and Eddie Guerrero in 2005. Although all these men are all in a better place, they never left us, and neither do the memories.
great writing, terrible editing.......2005-10-04
The content of this book and the writing were great, but the editing was terrible. Sometimes the chapters end abruptly, other times there are terms mentioned that should be elaborated on (how about a glossary of terms?).
I have read Meltzer's news letter off and on in the nineties but I still had troubles w/ some of the terms used. Also confusing was sometimes only the last names of wrestlers mentioned in stories were used.
It would have also been nice for each chapter to include the date of death and approximate date of birth (or age) of each subject, and when the chapter was originally published in the news letter.
Overall this book was very enjoyable, and Meltzer's knowledge and commentary is invaluable, it just would have been nice if a professional editor could have worked to make this book more accessible to the masses, and made the transistion from the news letter more seamless.
Customer Reviews:
Jack Keeps it Simple!.......2002-06-15
In the complicated world of Job Training it is quite refreshing to see that "New and Improved" is not always Best. I was first introduced to the Jack Benfield EMT bender and his Benfield Conduit Bending Manual in 1979 when I first joined the IBEW, and I found the tool and the Manual to both be Superior.
Why? Because they are simple to use!!
Presently, I train Electrician Apprentices on a daily basis,
and I find so many of the other manuals unreasonably complicated in their approach to EMT bending methods, especially for Apprentices who have been in the Trade a short time. When I see
an Apprentice failing to grasp the modern (and complicated) approach, I rely on the Benfield Manual and Jack's easy and amusing approach to developing skill in the Electricians Trade.
Todays Journeyman Level Electrician can also benefit from having a copy of this book. Highly Recomended!
Good basic bending manual, but incomplete.......2000-02-12
A good book for general conduit bending, but woefully inadequate for professional concentric bending.
The only book you will ever need.......1999-09-03
Relatively short, concise and easy to understand. If you need to get another book on conduit bending after reading this one you might as well give it up!

not for beginners!.......2000-08-17
These stories are in Spanish and read at a normal speed. My six year old says, "No not the Spanish one!" I think that you need to understand Spanish pretty well to enjoy these stories.
A fun way to learn german.......2000-06-30
I liked this product very much. It has a colorful book, along with the cassette all in german. I have found it helpful listening to familiar childhood stories to get to know the language. The one issue i did have with the book, is that i would have liked a translated section along side the german stories.
Great for children (and adults?) beginning to learn Spanish.......1998-05-07
I've been trying to teach my young daughter to speak Spanish, and though she had picked up some vocabulary, I was at a loss as to how to proceed. This book has been very helpful. The repetition aids both in understanding the stories and in learning the vocabulary. (Stories are the Little Red Hen, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Boy and his Burro.)
