Customer Reviews:
A good solid book, from someone in the trenches.......2007-04-07
There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about the crime drop of the 1990s, and the ongoing debate over what caused it. While many books have been published seeking to deny the obvious -- that changes in police technique caused the crime drop -- relatively few books have been published describing the new police techniques that have done so much good. Perhaps the most readable book on the subject is Bill Bratton's book, Turnaround, which is a personal biography, a description of how he achieved what he did in the police and a morality tale about his clash with Rudy Guiliani.
Vincent Henry was a working cop, who was in the trenches in the Compstat Revolution. He was deeply involved in all of this, and he has alot of knowledge about it. He has written a solid, workmanlike book. It is not as good a read as Bratton's book; its tone is more like that of a textbook. He gives a good throrough description, however, of the philosophy and practice of Compstat. Anyone actually involved in police management, or seeking ways to apply the lessons of Compstat to other areas of government, should read this book.
Compstat - From A to Z.......2002-05-26
Vincent Henry has written a book that is a valuable contribution to the understanding of Compstat.
Compstat was a 1996 winner of the Innovation in Government and has been listed as one of the major contributing factors to the "turn around" of police productivity in the New York Police Department in the mid-1990s.
Compstat has been the subject of several rumors, half truths and outright distortions. In a book whose audience is primarily college level students of policing and police management, Henry methodically explains the organizational context in which Compstat developed, actual implementation tactics and strategies used and assesses the future utility of the Compstat process in a variety of private and public settings.
Henry clearly establishes that Compstat is more than a "dog and pony show" or a staff meeting supplemented with computer graphics and statistical analysis. Rather it is one of several tools necessary to produce effective results in modern policing, " Compstat must be seen as one facet of a comprehensive and carefully orchestrated array of management strategies and practices".
This book is handicapped to an extent by the several audiences it serves simultaneously. First, nine of the ten chapters close with "Questions for Debate and Discussion", which serves the academic audience well but is bothersome to the general readers. Second, the use of sidebars tends to dilute the impact of the author's primary discussion at several points. However, the tenth chapter "The Compstat Paradigm: Summary of Basic Principles and Precepts" is one of the best short summaries of Compstat to be found anywhere in print. Those seven pages make the cost of the book worth very cent.
The most comprehensive and thorough description of Compstat.......2002-04-19
The New York City Police Department has achieved great reductions in crime through the Compstat process. Major crimes have declined 66%, and homicides are down 77% since 1993. These statistics translate into thousands of lives saved and significantly improved quality of life for all the people of New York. Those who argue that factors other than the police were responsible for this decline ignore the significant institutional changes in the NYPD and its method of policing.
It was not simply hiring thousands of cops and putting them on the street, it was a matter of changing the way those cops worked. This involved not only technological change, such as the use of computer pin mapping, but also managerial and cultural change within the NYPD. The result was a more analytical and focused NYPD, a more responsive and flexible department, better able to serve the people of New York. Compstat was driving force behind those changes.
Vincent Henry is a friend and coworker of mine for ten years, since I was a student in his class at CW Post College. While he has academic credentials, he also has the experience and perspective of a street cop. He was well placed to observe significant developments in the NYPD and its strategies over the years. He has an in-depth knowledge of the history of the agency and the personalities involved in the development of Compstat. This background provides insight into the subtleties and nuances of Compstat (and the NYPD as a whole) that an outsider may miss. The Compstat Paradigm is not only a description of the development of Compstat, but also a history of the NYPD over the last two decades. This historical context increases understanding of the political and personal forces that influenced the development of Compstat.
I have attended dozens of Compstat sessions as both an observer and a participant. I have read other books on Compstat, including NYPD Battles Crime by Eli Silverman and Managing Police Operations: Implementing the NYPD Crime Control Model Using Compstat by Phyllis Parshall McDonald. The Compstat Paradigm is the most comprehensive and thorough description of Compstat available, and provides the best overview of what the Compstat process is, how it developed, and how it works in the New York City Police Department.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A Difference of Opinion.......2001-03-08
I found this book to be quite useful. It is indeed a beginning text on the subject but if you, like myself, have spent most of your time fishing on streams you will find this a good jumping off point for fishing small lakes. There is much useful information in this book covering the nature of small lakes and the trout that you will find there. Specific information is given on the insects found there and their imitations. Basic techniques are covered as well as fishing craft. I would recommend it for someone starting out with lake fishing.
Don't waste words..........2000-02-08
"With just slightly less vigor than that of the Moors when they took Spain, the chironomid-pupa fly fished deep on a floating line took western lakes."
This is just a sample of the hair-pulling sentences that the reader must endure. While I give the book two stars for providing some useful content and a few inspiring photos, the nuggets of information are buried too deep in the poorly written chapters, superfluous paragraphs, wide text columns and amateur drawings. I have just one question: Where's the editor? I doubt that I'll purchase another book by Frank Amato Publications. It's just too frustrating a read.

good if you're ging to Poland.......2007-08-02
I thought this would be more useful phrases for everyday Polish, not for travel to Poland. It's a very good travel book. Sections broken down well so you can easily find the right phrases, but this is more for travel.
Berlitz Polish Phrase Book.......2007-01-10
What a find!! Anyone travelling to Poland will find this
phrase book really handy! Wish I had it with me the last
five times that I visited Poland. It covers everything
that you will need to know about food, restaurant odering,
sightseeing, travel, doctors, etc. etc. You'll never leave
home without it again!!!!
Polish phrase book & Dictionary .......2006-08-15
This publication was very helpful. I will use it in the future.
A Good Phrase Book .......2006-07-07
This is definitely a good phrase book, the pronunciation guide words are a big help. Depending on how far you plan on going with your polish studies, makes a big deal when it comes to purchasing this product. If you are looking to pick up on a few important phrases or common words, this book will serve its purpose. If you looking to learn a bit more than basic communication. I still recommend this book in addition to some other Polish self-learning courses, preferable an audio or CD-ROM tutorial. Like Eurotalk or Rosetta Language Online. This book will help you commit to memory some of the things these programs teach you, while your at the office or out and about, and need a convenient reference to check your memory against. Overall this is a good product.
Comprehensive Easy To Use.......2005-09-25
This book covers a lot in a simple format. Easy to use. I purchased several dictionaries, but this book is my bible. The best that I have come across.

Pretty good but not perfect........2006-08-07
I am trying to teach myself Polish with no prior knowledge of the language at all. This book has a heck of a lot of phrases that could be very useful, like the restaurant section with a quick reference of all the foods so you can figure out what your eating. It even has a few pages with a big picture of a car and a motorcycle with all the parts labeled in case your car breaks down.
My one problem with this book is that all the phrases are written as if you are speaking to a man, which is ok if it is the nominative case (pan) because then the feminine is pani, but there are a few phrases that use the dative (panu) or the accusative (pana) and nowhere in the book does it tell you what the feminine version is, I had to do a google search to find out. Since both the nouns and adjectives change according to gender, this book loses some value if you plan on talking to females.
Other than that one problem, it seems like a good little book. It has a few little grammar lessons too that are helpful. I'll definitely have this book with me when I am in Poland.

Customer Reviews:
Zey Tavia.......2007-09-25
This is an excellent book for gaining general information on the lifes and times of America's inventors. Suprisingly, a good deal of information about each subject is tightly packed and woven into each chapter. It is by no means, however, an indepth and intricate look into each innovator. You will need to do more research for that.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to gain some knowledge on a particular person, or about a particular invention. It is a great starter book for history enthusiasts as well.
Excellent Gift for the Entrepreneur, History Buff in your life.......2007-06-18
I rented the audiotape version from my local library and was hooked. I gave this book to my father for Christmas. Excellent insight into the influential Americans, and a great dose of our country's history at the same time.
Great coffee table book .......2007-01-18
very interesting - everyone will find something inspiring - whether you are an entrepreneur, a manager, an inventor or just looking to be inspired.
Must Read for any Business Person.......2006-08-06
This book is a number of short stories about successful business people, everyone from Robert Fulton (Steamboat Services), Isaac Singer (sewing machines), Charles Goodyear (rubber), Levi Strauss through to modern day people like Ted Turner, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Pierre Omidyar (eBay). The book is perfect for my personality type - it is a number of short stories so it didn't take long to read. There is a summary on page 465 of the book that gives 10 lessons that can be learned from history's innovators:
1. Make no assumptions.
2. First isn't always best.
3. It is okay to steal. (They don't really mean steal; they mean that more innovations come from borrowing in combination than simple invention. Henry Ford said, "I invented nothing new, I simple assembled into a car the discoveries of other men behind whom were century of work."
4. Diffidence would do it. An idea may only work when pushed to the limits.
5. Nothing works the first time. In an impatient society we expect instant results and quarterly earnings make things worse. It takes a strong person to persist and think long term.
6. New ideas disturb.
7. Cross pollination works. Taking ideas from other industries and applying them to a different industry is often a great way to cross-pollinate.
8. Success is risky. We all know that entrepreneurs take risks and we all know this is all part of the greatness of our system.
9. When one plus one equals three, this talks about innovations flourishing in partnerships provided the psychology is right.
10. Plaguing into networks. Isolated innovators may be successful but most of them are well connected and network well.
Overall I found this book to be highly inspirational and a must read for any business person.
A good change from political and military history.......2006-02-16
This book is a refreshing change of pace for American history buffs whose reading typically tends toward political or military topics. After all, most of what Americans actually interact with everyday are the products of inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs, not politicians or generals.
This large, lavishly illustrated, nearly 500-page tome provides biographical and business history summaries for more than 50 well known and not so well known industrial or business pioneers from John Fitch - steamboats in the 1780s, who knew? - to contemporary cybermillionairs and media moguls.
In my opinion the most interesting sections are the ones about the 19th Century industrial giants such as Goodyear, Edison and Ford who rose from very humble origins to found whole industries that shape the way we live and think today.
As other reviewers have commented the author's choices of which contemporary computer industry pioneers to annoint oddly shortchanges some the most influential entrepreneurs and the selection or presentation of some of the historic entrepreneurs does seem to at slant toward a PC point of view. Well.... this is the companion book to a PBS series so what do you expect? Objectivity?
Nevertheless, this is a useful, if non-definitive read about the history of American industry for both adults and younger people and serves a basis for further reading that might correct or balance some of the asserted shortcomings. A nine-page bibliography provides plenty of material for people who want to know more about any topic or personality the author covers.
Recommended as book to keep handy for reading or re-reading a chapter every now and then.
