Book Description
Based on their acclaimed work with GM, Motorola, Coca-Cola, and other firms, Hax and Wilde offer a powerful new model for developing strategy for a globalized, deregulated, net-driven economy. It provides the key to integrating customers, products, and business allies into a management strategy sure to succeed.

A masterful lesson.......2007-05-16
The Delta Model is a recent framework, developed at MIT by A. Hax and a variety of co-authors, to develop more efficient strategies. The core book explaining this approach is The Delta Project, has been released in 2000. Work has continued on the subject, often with Hax's Sloan Fellows students.
The Delta approach goes beyond the two dominant approaches to strategy (the famous Porterian five-force model, and the less widespread enterprise competencies/resources model) and gives company strategists the tools to broaden their vision. Among the strong points of this approach, one might mention:
* A far greater attention given to the "ecology" of complementors existing around the firm, and the extended company
* A much more precise definition of customers (encompassing all the steps up to, and including, the final customer), and very strong emphasis on exquisite segmentation
* A strong focus on the notion of "customer bonding" that partially supersedes raw competitive advantage
* A rigorous emphasis on execution, and how to measure and pilot the execution of strategy
* A clear rejection of the notion of commoditized product, and the formulation of new strategic stances going beyond "best price" or "pertinent differentiation" to include customer integration and system lock-in. Those new dimensions are organized along a figure infamous among Hax students, the Delta triangle.
* A focus on customer needs -especially untapped ones - as opposed to benchmarking oneself against competitors
Nothing new.......2006-03-03
This book has nothing new to suggest in the area of strategy. The "model" is no different than anything else suggested many years ago, and the examples of US Air and Enron are laughable. I would not recommend this book.
Concise visualization of strategy in the netwoked world........2002-01-08
The result of several years of analysis and contribution from some of the world's leading CEOs (in addition to Hax and Wilde), the Delta Project very succinctly creates a visual representation for strategy development that is both descriptive and normative. It explains the "Bonding" principle as a primary strategic force in both SRM (Supplier Relationship Management - including complementors) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management). It shows strategy as a spectrum from "Best Product" to "Total Customer Solution" to "System Lock-In" and the multiple paths and various methods to achieve each end point.
This book explains the need for process design from the start (e.g. Six Sigma), management by measurement, the failure of averages (a mean without a STD DEV is a meaningless number), and the difference in High Level and Granular metrics (what my Firm would call Critical Success Factors vs. Key Performance Indicators).
Most importantly, it drives home the most critical aspect of a winning corporate/industry/market strategy - operationalization, "Execution is NOT the problem, aligning execution to Strategy is!" I see this every day in my own client consulting. This is not a MBA textbook it is a practical, quick and succinct read.
Warmed Over and Not Worth the Time or Ink.......2001-12-15
The authors offer what they seem to think is a "new" way to view competitive success. Like many management books, the ability to derive framework from illustrations comes with limitations. Most frameworks are illustrable. The true innovations in thinking build from or rail against prevailing work, in books like Porter's or D'Aveni's counterviewpoint Hypercomopetition. What is most frustrating about this book is that it spends a lot of time in what could be said in a few pages, the result perhaps of combining an academic and personal consulting vantage - borrowing your watch to tall you the time in roman numerals! Every good manager knows that first to market isn't per se sustainable and that creating barriers to switching is good. Here, these simple truths are passed off, albeit in different words, as wisdom. Please, guys, like so many others, you would best ply your respective trades in your current arenas and leave the thinking to more cogent thinkers. Bottom-line, I wouldn't offer this for sale even used.
An analysis that holds up to changing markets.......2001-11-21
Wilde and Hax show clearly how companies can reach sustainable rather than fleeting advantage, and they do so with a framework that is applicable across industries.
Most tellingly, their model holds up well to describe the fate of Internet and technology companies after the bubble has burst, even though the book was written when the boom was in full swing. Applied in today's context their work successfully explains why eBay has remained strong while companies that merely built a customer list with nothing other than a first to market (or "best product") strategy have struggled.
The authors set their book apart from most business texts through the broad applicability of their model and the ability to interpret current events rather than merely past ones.

Book Description
To date, there has been little published that synthesizes and draw lessons from the economics of agricultural policy. This study fills that void, providing an economic analysis of the policies that affect agriculture and agribusiness in both Canada and the United States.
The authors emphasize the role of farmers and agribusiness in the formation of policy, exploring the farm problem from both economic and historical perspectives. The various institutions that influence the development and implementation of policy are also discussed and compared. Because of the importance of international trade to North American agriculture, one chapter is devoted to a discussion of trade models. The book then goes on to analyze specific problems, such as price and income stabilization, science policy, environmental policy, and food quality and safety. The role of vertical markets in agriculture is emphasized throughout. The authors combine the traditional welfare economics framework with the new institutional economics and rent-seeking behaviour to explain the development of agricultural policy.
This much-needed study will be welcomed by researchers and policy analysts, as well as instructors seeking material for senior undergraduate and graduate courses.

Book Description
Measurements of solar irradiance, both bolometric and at various wavelengths, over the last two decades have established conclusively that the solar energy flux varies on a wide range of time scales, from minutes to the 11-year solar cycle. The major question is how the solar variability influences the terrestrial climate.
The
Solar Electromagnetic Radiation Study for Solar Cycle 22 (SOLERS22) is an international research program operating under the auspices of the Solar-Terrestrial Energy Program (STEP) Working Group 1: `The Sun as a Source of Energy and Disturbances'. STEP is sponsored by the Scientific Committee of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
The main goal of the SOLERS22 1996 Workshop was to bring the international research community together to review the most recent results obtained from observations, theoretical interpretation, empirical and physical models of the variations in the solar energy flux and their possible impact on climate studies. These questions are essential for researchers and graduate students in solar-terrestrial physics.

Book Description
The works of Henry David Thoreau contain some of the most beautifully written and inspiring observations of nature, yet most of his readers are familiar with only one of his books, Walden. Two other gems, The Maine Woods and Cape Cod, are travelogues containing some of his finest writing. Presented here are selections from the best of these two works, including Thoreau's record of his climb up Mount Katahdin, his arduous river journey by canoe down the Allegash River, the deadly shipwreck he encountered on his first trip to Cape Cod, as well as his wonderfully colorful and humorous portrait of the Wellfleet oysterman. These writings offer a vision of Thoreau struggling with the harsh realities of wild nature and how people might live in harmony with the natural world.

The Hiker's Guide to South Central Alaska.......2006-04-16
South Central Alaska holds most of the population and recieves many of the visitors to Alaska. It also includes those parts of the Alaskan wilderness most accessible to the average hiker. This guidebook is designed to provide both residents and visitors with a selection of hiking possibilities spread across the Anchorage Bowl, the Kenai Peninsula, the Matanuska Valley on the way to Denali, and the Copper River Basin on the way to the port of Valdez. The hikes range in challenge from those suitable for the merely fit to those intended for the extremely fit.
The book is broken down first by general geographic area and then further into a description of each hike. Information provided includes distances, estimated travel time, elevation change and a difficulty rating. Descriptions include how to get to the appropriate trailhead and sketch maps for the actual route. The book has a good selection of photographs that provide a sense of scale for the terrain. An introductory chapter discusses the hazards of hiking in Alaska, including the weather and the wildlife.
This guidebook is highly recommended to the resident and to the visitor for an informed choice on where to hike in South Central Alaska.
Hikers Bible.......2003-05-11
This is a MUST HAVE book for any visitor or Alaska resident who wants to get out and about and enjoy the outdoors in this part of Alaska. Those of us who have lived in Alaska for many years still use this book every summer for our day trip or weekend adventure planning, as well as for longer trips. I give this book as a gift to both summer visitors and people who have just moved here. It is accurate, clearly written, has good maps, easy directions to the trail heads and has the necessary safety information for folks not used to things like mosquitos, bears, and stream crossings. I get the latest edition every time it comes out to check out the most up to date trail information.

Not Just for Locals.......2000-04-30
If you want to see wild Alaska, don't skip over Southcentral just because you see cars and tall buildings in Anchorage. The hikes detailed in this book start on or near the road system. But you're far more likely to see moose, bear, dall sheep, and other wildlife on these trails than in the remote bush. Some of the trails are crowded (by Alaska standards--perhaps six hikers per mile) in the sunny season, but others see very little traffic. And, even on the most crowded trails such as McHugh and Bird Ridge, you escape most other hikers after about a thousand feet. By the time you work your way into the high valleys, you're usually the only one up there. The views are astounding, and the weather far, far nicer than SE or SW Alaska. Worth a look, even if you're only in Anchorage for a few days.
First book needed for any hiker.......1999-01-27
First, I should say that "for hikes in the vicinity of Anchorage" is a little misleading. Southcentral Alaska includes thousands of square miles worth of gorgeous trails and hikeable terrain, and this book is probably the best one to help you get out there. It includes maps for all hikes, as well as vital statistics like distance, estimated hiking time (take with a grain of salt!), total elevation gain, and seasons that it's open. Indexes in the back help you look for a hike by season, area, length, or children-suitability.
After 17 years in Alaska, ten with the same dog-eared copy of 55 Ways, I haven't been disappointed yet.

Good Stuff for Students.......2006-05-02
I ordered this book to help my students who simply can't spell. I'm amazed at how many students use this handy book to help them write essays and to correct their errors. My students find it quick and easy to use. They also tell me that this book helps them catch mistakes that a spell checker won't. I highly recommend this book to teachers who are looking for alternative ways to help poor spellers succeed.
Cute book, well executed, but a terrible idea ..........2002-10-11
Provides, in bold-face text, for all you visual learners, columns and columns of MISSPELLED words! Bought it as a gift for my spelling-impaired daughter, who refuses to use it, as it merely reinforces in her mind all of the incorrect ways to spell words. You'd do better to have a friend or teacher spell the word correctly onto a small card, and then stare at that for a while!

Spell Checker Supreme.......2001-08-04
So, you think your word processor spell checker is all you need. Wrong! I have used this book for years and reach for it often when the spell checker in my mind or the one in my computer are out to lunch. Let's see, a few bucks for the book and a few minutes to look up a word and I don't look like a stupid fool who can't spell. No question. Buy the book. It's only the cost of a lunch or a couple of cups of coffee at your favorite (barista empourium)--darn it, who borrowed my Mispeller's Dictionary? Hum...you mean this web page has no spell checker? Where's that book!
Book Description

Jake finds out, and life on the island will never be the same. First Zoey, his old girlfriend, betrayed him. Now Claire, his new love, has hurt him, too. Somebody's going to pay. . . .
Customer Reviews:
More like Jake Gets Nailed.......2001-05-09
Jake just didn't find out, he got nailed. That would be a little bit too much betrayal for me. The woman he used to love and the woman he has fallen in love with, both put him through changes. I don't like claire; because, I think she is weak. Benjamin is too strong for her, and she can't pull her games on him like Jake. I like Zoey and Lucas. I think the chemistry between them is a little better.
Funny and a grate book for teenagers.......2000-09-14
I love this book. It was perfect I mean it has feeling in I could definintly relate to as I am a teenager. I say read this book or if you are a adult get this book for your kid who knows you might even enjoy it.
And the truth will set you free..........2000-03-19
As the second book in the series, it's really good. The events leading up to Jake discovering two horrifying truths (his long time girlfriend is cheating on him and who really crashed the car) is very good. The only problem is the charcters. I despise Clair even more and feel no sympathy for Zoey and her 'dilemma'. The highlights of this book revolves around every secene with Ben, Lucas, Nina, and Aisha.
GREAT BOOK!.......2000-01-11
This is a really good book. i love the way Katherine descibes the way some of the characters act. I have to say i like Zoey the best because she's a hopeless romantic that isn't seen very much in books for teenagers. if you haven't read this book alread i advise you do.
Uh Oh, this calls for trouble.......1999-12-13
Jake finds out that Zoey the love of his life is fooling around behind his back with his worst enemy! Lucas Cabral. The guy who murdered his older brother Wade. Only Jake doesn't know that Lucas didn't kill his brother, Claire did. And he's warming up to Claire too! Find out what happens in this thrilling and suspensful book.
