    Book Description

The authors of The Economic Effects of Constitutions use econometric tools to study what they call the "missing link" between constitutional systems and economic policy; the book is an uncompromisingly empirical sequel to their previous theoretical analysis of economic policy. Taking recent theoretical work as a point of departure, they ask which theoretical findings are supported and which are contradicted by the facts. The results are based on comparisons of political institutions across countries or time, in a large sample of contemporary democracies. They find that presidential/parliamentary and majoritarian/proportional dichotomies influence several economic variables: presidential regimes induce smaller public sectors, and proportional elections lead to greater and less targeted government spending and larger budget deficits. Moreover, the details of the electoral system (such as district magnitude and ballot structure) influence corruption and structural policies toward economic growth.

Persson and Tabellini's goal is to draw conclusions about the causal effects of constitutions on policy outcomes. But since constitutions are not randomly assigned to countries, how the constitutional system was selected in the first place must be taken into account. This raises challenging methodological problems, which are addressed in the book. The study is therefore important not only in its findings but also in establishing a methodology for empirical analysis in the field of comparative politics.

              Product Description

This book explores the conditions of production in agricultural biotechnology. Situating its discussion in theoretical debates on the role of science and technology in global capitalism, the book grounds abstract discussions in a case study of Africa. Adopting the premise that technology is socially mediated, the book explores the way in which biotechnology has developed in the United States from its early beginnings as a field of academic research in molecular biology in the 1950s into a worldwide commercial enterprise that is a major focus of American high technology and competitive advantage. The globalization and commercialization of biotechnology, which was made possible through the expansion of international intellectual property rights based on Western notions of private property, carry particular implications for Africa. Western narratives portray agricultural biotechnology as a panacea for African underdevelopment—a cure for disease, poverty and malnutrition. But the adoption of agricultural biotechnology in Africa will likely have differential impacts on producers, depending particularly on the capital-intensiveness of their production and the nature of specific biotech products. This book highlights models of agricultural research and production—Zimbabwe’s system of maize research and the African Model Law—that represent important alternatives to the capital-intensive farming and research practices of the West. Indeed, if Africa is to benefit from advances in agricultural technology, a fundamentally different model of agricultural research and technology transfer will be necessary--and Africa itself is the place where such an alternative is to be found.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the backcountry enthusiast.......2000-01-23

If you are planning a winter/spring backcountry trip and want accurate, detailed information on routes, terrain, and level of difficulty for some of the best skiing/snowboarding terrain in California than this is the perfect book. The book is well organized, clearly written and beautifully illustrated. Everytime I pick up the book I find myself mentally planning new trips and plotting descent routes on the photographs. An added plus to the book is the wealth of information that it contains on preparing for a backcountry experience. The author covers everything from avalanche danger to equipment to bring on an extended trip. He even includes an excellent website for those who want more information. There always is a question in my mind when I read any backcountry guide about the accuracy of the information. Who wants to set out on a trip only to find out that the route maps or the descriptions don't match the terrain? The author is someone with extensive backcountry experience who has done each of the 50 trips described in the book at least once. We all sould be so lucky! Having taken two trips with the author that are detailed in the book, I can say that he did an excellent job of describing the routes and the terrain. If you are someone who is looking for backcountry ski/snowbaording adventure, this book will make your trip planning a whole lot easier. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars 50 Classic backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits.......2000-01-04

Having recently purchased Paul Richins book, ³50 Classic Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits in California,² I was very impressed. Like all books published by ³The Mountaineers,² it is nothing but First Class in every way. Mr. Richins has gone out of his way to provide the rest of us with a gem which will lead one to enjoy the fantastic world of the winter Sierra.

Even if one is nothing more than an arm chair cross country skier they would find this book highly enjoyable and enlightening reading. For the more adventuresome person, Mr. Richins book would be their ultimate guide to a world of adventure. The pictures, the writing, the maps are all five star. The little extras that Mr. Richins has added throughout the book, such as writings of John Muir, and others, adds the spice to this delightful book.

Mr. Richins, since he has obviously researched, personally , all 50 of the peaks listed in his guide, has been able to make a very reliable summary of each peak, from Intermediate, Advance, to Expert. This would easily allow me to select a challenge within my ability and, along with the excellent guide of the book, make winter trips I would have never thought possible.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on skiing in the backcountry.......1999-12-12

Mr. Richins book is a veritable treasure-trove of information. From well researched check-lists to clear descriptions of everything from how to get to the trailhead to routes on the peaks; this book covers it all! Mr. Richins love of the Sierra Nevada shines through these pages. He invites his readers to share his love of the winter Sierra and imparts knowledge that makes it possible for expert and novice alike to enjoy these mountains. History of the Sierra Nevada is woven in throughout the book, creating an interestng counterpoint to the climbing routes. A must for the backpack on winter trips in the Sierras! Something to read by headlamp on those long nights in the tent!

                  Book Description

For over a century, Thayer's has been lauded as one of the best New Testament lexicons available. Both accessible and thorough, it is a work suited for the student of New Testament Greek. Thayer's provides dictionary definitions for each word and relates each word to its New Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. Its exhaustive coverage of New Testament Greek words, as well as its extensive quotation of extra-biblical word usage and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render Thayer's an invaluable resource.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for me.......2007-07-12

I am not an expert. I could figure it out pretty easily. I can't read greek. Didn't seem to matter. I can identify numbers and for the most part they don't vary too much from the order one usually expects in numbers. Quite nice, really. But I am not an expert, or I would probably be more fussy.

5 out of 5 stars Thayer is a thumbs up!.......2007-01-10

Great work. Very useful to me. I am pleased with the design and layout.

                  3 out of 5 stars Still Useful!.......2006-10-22

Granting the age on Thayer's and the recent advancement in lexicography, I will say that there are better works available than Thayer's (e.g, BDAG). But I still find Thayer's to be useful in some places.

Keep your Thayer's and make references when you can, but do not make it your primary tool. You need to trust more recent scholarship.

2 out of 5 stars Thayer is No Longer Relevant. But..........2005-06-02

Thayer went great lengths to produce an excellent lexical resource. Many would agree. But shortly after publishing, his book became outdated. Koine Greek was no longer viewed as a Holy Spirit invention (which was thought for a long time since scholars could not find 10% of the NT vocabulary in secular writings until about the last century). Since Thayer's release, Koine lexicography has taken great strides and has since left this dictionary far behind (see "Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics" by Daniel B. Wallace).

One positive of Thayer's dictionary is his study of etymology. Understanding how words form is very helpful in vocabulary memorization. But I'll add a word of caution illustrated by this short etymology lesson: "Butterfly" does not mean "a fly made of butter."

As words evolve (or devolve), they do not always retain their meanings. Koine vocabulary is an example that has been required to simplify in order to be accepted by various cultures. The words will not always fit etymological patterns or classical definitions.

Why then is Thayer's still so popular? It's cheap. It's public domain. And it's easy to use. Purchase at your own risk.

5 out of 5 stars Thayer is a trusted friend.......2004-03-23

Although I have both Arndts and Thayers lexicons, I find myself reaching again and again for Thayers. After almost thirty years of ministry and Bible study, my well-worn copy of Thayers Lexicon is a trusted friend. It is simple and easy to use. The definitions, unlike Arndts, are briefer and to the point, dealing almost exclusively with Biblical definitions. More importantly, it can be trusted to give you accurate definitions without falling prey to the influence of modern cults.

Unfortunately, in the attempt to be politically correct and to avoid being labled intolerant, Biblical scholars are under tremendous pressure to bow to non-classical definitions of Greek words to reflect, or at least include, cultic definitions. Of course, a working knowledge of Greek is needed to use this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Mitford cooks.......2007-10-08

I truly enjoy buying cookbooks, more for the stories and the history than for the actual recipe. This book is very entertaining. I simply had to re-read the entire series again, to re-aquaint myself with the characters that contributed the recipies. I spent one entire day reading the cookbook. Have made two of the recipes so far.
The presentation of story then recipe is a terrific idea, the family photo album at the back of the book is wonderful.
To be honest, the review I read did not tell me if the Orange-Marmalade cake recipe was in the book or not. I bought it in the high hopes that it was. Very happy to read her story about that particular recipe. Great book for reading even if you do not bake or cook.
This makes Mitford come alive in a brand new way.
I'm writting a family history cookbook, her cookbook gave me some great presentation ideas. It never crossed my mind that I should include pictures of the food on family heriloom china.

This cookbook is a wonderful addition to the other Mitford books by Jan Karon. With over 150 recipes taken from all of the books it brings back the charm and memories of the stories. The puns, and side bar remarks are precious and it is a delight to read and reread. The recipes are very good too. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It makes a great gift for Christmas.

After reading several of the Mitford Books, this edition finalized the bond between me, the reader, and the characters who populated the pages. In reading the different volumes, the reader becomes aware of the place that food occupies in the daily lives of the characters. Many times I marveled at Karon's ability to incorporate the preparation of meals to the story line. I was often tempted to seek out the recipes mentioned in her stories. Now that I own the Cookbook I enjoy preparing and sharing some of the very dishes that are attributed to the wonderful characters filling the Mitford Books.
