The Economic Effects of Constitutions (Munich Lectures)

ASIN: 0262661926 |
Book Description
The authors of The Economic Effects of Constitutions use econometric tools to study what they call the "missing link" between constitutional systems and economic policy; the book is an uncompromisingly empirical sequel to their previous theoretical analysis of economic policy. Taking recent theoretical work as a point of departure, they ask which theoretical findings are supported and which are contradicted by the facts. The results are based on comparisons of political institutions across countries or time, in a large sample of contemporary democracies. They find that presidential/parliamentary and majoritarian/proportional dichotomies influence several economic variables: presidential regimes induce smaller public sectors, and proportional elections lead to greater and less targeted government spending and larger budget deficits. Moreover, the details of the electoral system (such as district magnitude and ballot structure) influence corruption and structural policies toward economic growth.

Agricultural Biotechnology Reconsidered: Western Narratives and African Alternatives
Noah Zerbe Manufacturer: Africa World Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1592212387 Release Date: 2005-05-01 |
Product Description
This book explores the conditions of production in agricultural biotechnology. Situating its discussion in theoretical debates on the role of science and technology in global capitalism, the book grounds abstract discussions in a case study of Africa. Adopting the premise that technology is socially mediated, the book explores the way in which biotechnology has developed in the United States from its early beginnings as a field of academic research in molecular biology in the 1950s into a worldwide commercial enterprise that is a major focus of American high technology and competitive advantage. The globalization and commercialization of biotechnology, which was made possible through the expansion of international intellectual property rights based on Western notions of private property, carry particular implications for Africa. Western narratives portray agricultural biotechnology as a panacea for African underdevelopmenta cure for disease, poverty and malnutrition. But the adoption of agricultural biotechnology in Africa will likely have differential impacts on producers, depending particularly on the capital-intensiveness of their production and the nature of specific biotech products. This book highlights models of agricultural research and productionZimbabwes system of maize research and the African Model Lawthat represent important alternatives to the capital-intensive farming and research practices of the West. Indeed, if Africa is to benefit from advances in agricultural technology, a fundamentally different model of agricultural research and technology transfer will be necessary--and Africa itself is the place where such an alternative is to be found.

50 Classic backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits.......2000-01-04
Even if one is nothing more than an arm chair cross country skier they would find this book highly enjoyable and enlightening reading. For the more adventuresome person, Mr. Richins book would be their ultimate guide to a world of adventure. The pictures, the writing, the maps are all five star. The little extras that Mr. Richins has added throughout the book, such as writings of John Muir, and others, adds the spice to this delightful book.
Mr. Richins, since he has obviously researched, personally , all 50 of the peaks listed in his guide, has been able to make a very reliable summary of each peak, from Intermediate, Advance, to Expert. This would easily allow me to select a challenge within my ability and, along with the excellent guide of the book, make winter trips I would have never thought possible.

Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Coded with Strong's Concordance Numbers
Joseph Thayer Manufacturer: Hendrickson Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1565632095 |
Book Description
For over a century, Thayer's has been lauded as one of the best New Testament lexicons available. Both accessible and thorough, it is a work suited for the student of New Testament Greek. Thayer's provides dictionary definitions for each word and relates each word to its New Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. Its exhaustive coverage of New Testament Greek words, as well as its extensive quotation of extra-biblical word usage and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render Thayer's an invaluable resource.Customer Reviews:

Thayer is a trusted friend.......2004-03-23
Unfortunately, in the attempt to be politically correct and to avoid being labled intolerant, Biblical scholars are under tremendous pressure to bow to non-classical definitions of Greek words to reflect, or at least include, cultic definitions. Of course, a working knowledge of Greek is needed to use this book.
