the mathematics of financial modeling & investment management

The Mathematics of Financial Modeling & Investment Management covers a wide range of technical topics in mathematics and finance-enabling the investment management practitioner, researcher, or student to fully understand the process of financial decision-making and its economic foundations.

This comprehensive resource will introduce you to key mathematical techniques-matrix algebra, calculus, ordinary differential equations, probability theory, stochastic calculus, time series analysis, optimization-as well as show you how these techniques are successfully implemented in the world of modern finance. Special emphasis is placed on the new mathematical tools that allow a deeper understanding of financial econometrics and financial economics. Recent advances in financial econometrics, such as tools for estimating and representing the tails of the distributions, the analysis of correlation phenomena, and dimensionality reduction through factor analysis and cointegration are discussed in depth.

Using a wealth of real-world examples, Focardi and Fabozzi simultaneously show both the mathematical techniques and the areas in finance where these techniques are applied. They also cover a variety of useful financial applications, such as:

Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, The Mathematics of Financial Modeling & Investment Management clearly ties together financial theory and mathematical techniques.

Got this book to prepare for my interview. It is a nice book that covers all the topics. It's not for beginners. It's good for people who learned the topics before and just need a complete refresh of memory in a short period of time.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

      Book Description

Few Americans know much about contemporary farming, which has evolved dramatically over the past few decades. In The Changing Scale of American Agriculture, the award-winning geographer and landscape historian John Fraser Hart describes the transformation of farming from the mid-twentieth century, when small family farms were still viable, to the present, when a farm must sell at least $250,000 of farm products each year to provide an acceptable level of living for a family.

The increased scale of agriculture has outmoded the Jeffersonian ideal of small, self-sufficient farms. In the past farmers kept a variety of livestock and grew several crops, but modern family farms have become highly specialized in producing a single type of livestock or one or two crops. As farms have become larger and more specialized, their number has declined.

Hart contends that modern family farms need to become integrated into tightly orchestrated food-supply chains in order to thrive, and these complex new organizations of large-scale production require managerial skills of the highest order. According to Hart, this trend is not only inevitable, but it is beneficial, because it produces the food American consumers want to buy at prices they can afford.

Although Hart provides the statistics and clear analysis such a study requires, his book focuses on interviews with farmers: those who have shifted from mixed crop-and-livestock farming to cash-grain farming in the Midwest agricultural heartland; beef, dairy, chicken, egg, turkey, and hog producers around the periphery of the heartland; and specialty crop producers on the East and West Coasts. These invaluable case studies bring the reader into direct personal contact with the entrepreneurs who are changing American agriculture. Hart believes that modern large-scale farmers have been criticized unfairly, and The Changing Scale of American Agriculture, the result of decades of research, is his attempt to tell their side of the story.

The Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary Korean is very good for a beginner in Korean. The introduction is very useful in helping the student understand pronunciation and formation of the characters. The print is easy to read, which can be a problem with some Korean dictionaries. I recommend is as a good introductory Korean-English and English-Korean dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Compact & Useful Everyday Dictionary.......2005-01-23

I am a student of Korean and this pocket dictionary was the first Korean dictionary I bought to aid me in my studies. The compact size of this dictionary makes it very easy and convenient to carry around, and it’s perfect for people on the go. (That is, no more suffering under the weight of a full dictionary!) ^^

The English-Korean, Korean-English dictionary format makes it handy to look up and translate words both ways. And the dictionary also comes with a pronunciation guide, which is also handy for beginners. I find the pronunciation guide extremely useful and convenient. In Korean, the way a word is pronounced depends on whether a particular consonant is in the front, middle or end of the word, the pronunciation guide somewhat answers this by telling you how placement of a consonant can affect the pronunciation. For example, “T” is “T” when at the start and end of the word and “D” in the middle of vowels.

Also, this dictionary is arranged according to romanization, making it easy for beginners to lookup a word by “pronunciation”. The inclusion of Hangul is another major plus since you can check how to write a particular word in Korean. The vocabulary here are written in dictionary form rather than spoken form, so if you’re trying to use certain words to SAY something, you’ll need to convert it to the spoken form. For example, in this dictionary, “to watch” in the dictionary form is “poda”, so to say “I’m watching…” you’ll need to change it to “…pwayo”. Unfortunately, the dictionary doesn't address this but then again, it's a dictionary, not a textbook. ^^ I guess this is the same with most Korean dictionaries, so you’ll need to have some knowledge of the Korean language to be able to use this dictionary to your advantage.

It’s also easy to look for phrasal verbs and vocabulary with the same “words” you’re looking for. For example, you can find under “watch” the noun and verb form (and explanation), as well as “watch for”, “watch out”, “watch out for” and so forth. This is extremely useful and convenient especially when looking out for common, everyday words. The only drawback I had with this dictionary is that certain Korean words can be really hard to find, especially in the “Korean-English” section if you don’t know the exact romanization letters.

Although I wouldn’t say this is a perfect dictionary for fluent Korean speakers as it doesn’t provide as much words and extensive information as a complete dictionary do, it is, nevertheless, an excellent dictionary and guide for everyday use and people on the move as it covers useful and commonly used words. If you're tired of browsing through “thick” dictionaries just to find that simple, everyday word you want, give this a try. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners too.......2004-08-28

I recently moved to S. Korea knowing little more than hello and goodbye. This dictionary was extremely helpful in that the English section shows word usage and some phrases in both roman characters and Hangul. In the same way the Korean section is written alphabetically based on the English ALphabet and is listed by Romanization. This is really helpful when people are speaking to you. Also the dictionary has a great Proununciation chart for the Hangul letters, which helps when translating signs, and helped me learn to read Hangul.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2003-06-20

This is one of the best I've seen for beginner-intermediate levels for several reasons:
The dictionary offers both hangul and romanization for everything, and this is one of the better romanization schemes I've seen because it works in the morphophonological changes to match real pronunciation. I'm good at hangul and familiar with several romanizations such as Yale like what is used in linguistic publications. The romanization used in this dictionary is very good, and I recommend it for beginners.

The Korean-English section is listed in alphabetical order by romanization. Unless you're mentally challenged, it's very easy to use and words are easy to find. For example, only the unvoiced letters are found at the beginning of words: ch, k, p, t; So there aren't j, g, b, d entries.

The English-Korean section has some of the best coverage of English vocabulary found lacking in many foreign language dictionaries, such as phrasal verbs and more colloquial usage including various uses of vulgar language. For example, almost every way we can use "take" or "get" in English is described and phrasal verbs get their own entries, such as "take out (from bag, pocket) kko(naeda; stain chiuda; appendix, tooth ppopptta; word from text ppaenaeda; money from bank inch'urhada; (to dinner etc) terigo nagada; insurance policy ...e tu(lda; take it out on s.o. nuguege hwap'urihada". All the other phrasal verbs starting with "take" have similarly detailed entries. If you want to say "crash" you'll have to know that a thunder crash (chi'da), a market crash (punggoehada), a computer crash (kojangnada), and to crash when you want to sleep (chada) all have different ways to say in Korean (but you'll still have to come up with your objects to those verbs--it does effectively translate crash). This dictionary details it all out.

The vocabulary is up-to-date including words and phrases like "surf the Net".

For people who study or have studied Japanese, the Langenscheidt Japanese one has the same English entries for easy comparison between the two languages. I use both in addition to other dictionaries by Minjung Seorim. These dictionaries have been well-planned, it is too bad that many students of Korean get tunnel-vision with their dictionaries. (The Japanese version which has been planned in the same way has 5-stars). If you can learn to read Hangul, then you can read this romanization too, and both are included in the dictionary. That makes it all the better.

I hope Langenscheidt comes out with a larger, more advanced version up to par with their European language dictionaries.

"The problem was how whenever he turned to any kind of schoolwork, he couldn't seem to think. His brain seized up, it seemed to shut, click! like a great stupid padlock snapping into place."

Luke Leman is about to fail twelfth grade--again. Harassed by the assistant principal, ignored by his father, and worried over by his mother, Luke has slipped into an inner world of his own making where concentration is impossible and sleep is elusive. He obsesses over missed assignments and longs for his younger days when the mantle of meeting all his father's high expectations didn't weigh so heavily on his shoulders. To his anxious mother and his girlfriend, Carolyn, he mentions the sound of the night train, the one that comes long past midnight when he should be asleep but never is. When they insist there is no train, Luke worries that he has finally lost his mind. When he goes out one night to find out if the train really exists, he discovers that the sanity he seeks may cost him his life.

Even though it is frustrating that Australian young-adult author Judith Clarke never pinpoints exactly what event precipitated Luke's spiral of failure, she still paints an effectively bleak, evocative picture of adolescent depression. Sympathetic teen readers will immediately understand what Luke is going through and wonder why all the clueless adults in Luke's life either dismiss or ignore his obvious signs of distress. Night Train is an excellent book for use in high school discussions of teen depression. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

2 out of 5 stars Night Train Derails..........2001-02-08

Although I found great concepts within this Young Adult novel, I found myself getting more and more frustrated about the never ending circle of repeated plot an antagonizing conflicts that Luke, our main character, faces. Can he make something of himself, why is he such a failure when he has the potential to become a bright and successful man in the future? His Father no longer acknowledges his existence, his Mother wants to believe in Luke but she no longer trusts him, and his sister Molly dwells on a time when Luke was "normal" and conformed, while Naomi tries to protect him. Protect him from what? Himself? Or Fate? I do accept the fact that the repeated scenario we see in Night Train does give the reader that "frustrated" feeling that Luke probably was experiencing in his life at certain moments. If this was the author's intent, it works brilliantly. If not, I'm afraid readers will become bored and lose interest in the text. I found myself wondering where on Earth this novel could be going with this plot. And I knew from the very moment we were first introduce to the late night train whistle, that something tragic was involved with this "mystery" train (that only Luke could hear.) And why was that? Do we ever find out, or is it too left ambiguous to our imaginations. Perhaps our antagonists carry their job a little too far for readers to enjoy the novel and characters themselves, although this is a "hard" book of realities to begin with. Perhaps a softer side of Luke and his family or friends was needed so we could better connect and feel sorry for the events in which Luke goes through. All in all, I give this book a 2, in hopes of a better read next time from Judith Clarke.

5 out of 5 stars The Night Train is an excellent book........2001-02-04

Luke is an 18 year old still in 12th grade, due to him failing his HSC last year. Final Exams are coming up, and Luke is fearing he may fail again. He has been kicked out of 2 schools, but despite all this he has a very high intelligence rating. He is very close to his youngest sister, Naomi. Molly, his other sister, towards the end starts to like Luke. Luke's parents, both have almost given up on him. His father is no longer speaking to him, and his mother is almost ready to give up. His girl friend, Caroline, is one of the very few people who likes him. With the fear of failing, and getting expelled again, Luke is under alot of pressure. He starts to hear a night train, but nobody else hears it. He has to find out if he is going crazy or not. He has to find out if it is real.

Over all the book was great. I liked the way everything happened. I thought the ending was good, but I didn't want that to happen. This is one book that i found myself reading every minute I had to myself, and finished it in 3 days. I hope you like it that much.

4 out of 5 stars Nighttrain is one great book.......2000-09-03

Luke Leman, a school student is about to fail his HSC exams again. Why can't he do better this time? Well, that's the problem. Luke is so confused about hearing these noises, from the nighttrain that he readily never finds his inner success from the past. Even for the worse, Luke's father Dan and mother Margaret use to care about him. But now, consequently from his failures from his past exams, his father never has spoken to him again. Judith Clarke really shows a great deal of personal self ashame in Luke's father and also with Margaaret who wittingly loves and cares for Luke, but she's not 'controllable' and successful mother in the situations of Luke and his sister Molly.

Although it's found that Luke's tremendous hardship, Naomi, his sister cares about him and loves Luke for his present. Naomi predicates Luke's intention, and realising him for what he is, unlike his father.

Many controversial and inflicting situations that to of Luke's weakness arises out from the communication within the family and particularly school. Although the ending is terrifying, but simply takes the pressure off, which finishes the plot of freedom and symbolises the unlocking of chains.

Overall, this book is great. Ages from 11-18 should love this.

1 out of 5 stars Far too dismal a story.......2000-06-09

Luke fears he is going crazy. He is the only one who can hear the sounds of the "night train" of the title...and no one believes him. With the exception of Luke's youngest sister and his girlfriend, there is no one in Luke's life that even wants to help him. Does Luke really hear it? Or is it only in his mind?

I wanted to like this book, but overall the plot was just too implausible for me. The book moves back and forth in time and since the story begins with Luke's death, we already know how the book ends. All in all, I found it difficult to get myself involved in Luke's world and it's mostly unsympathetic characters.
