Book Description
Why shouldn't people who deplete our natural assets have to pay, and those who protect them reap profits? Conservation-minded entrepreneurs and others around the world are beginning to ask just that question, as the increasing scarcity of natural resources becomes a tangible threat to our own lives and our hopes for our children. The New Economy of Nature brings together Gretchen Daily, one of the world's leading ecologists, with Katherine Ellison, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, to offer an engaging and informative look at a new "new economy" -- a system recognizing the economic value of natural systems and the potential profits in protecting them.
Through engaging stories from around the world, the authors introduce readers to a diverse group of people who are pioneering new approaches to conservation. We meet Adam Davis, an American business executive who dreams of establishing a market for buying and selling "ecosystem service units;" John Wamsley, a former math professor in Australia who has found a way to play the stock market and protect native species at the same time; and Dan Janzen, a biologist working in Costa Rica who devised a controversial plan to sell a conservation area's natural waste-disposal services to a local orange juice producer. Readers also visit the Catskill Mountains, where the City of New York purchased undeveloped land instead of building an expensive new water treatment facility; and King County, Washington, where county executive Ron Sims has dedicated himself to finding ways of "making the market move" to protect the county's remaining open space.
Daily and Ellison describe the dynamic interplay of science, economics, business, and politics that is involved in establishing these new approaches and examine what will be needed to create successful models and lasting institutions for conservation. The New Economy of Nature presents a fundamentally new way of thinking about the environment and about the economy, and with its fascinating portraits of charismatic pioneers, it is as entertaining as it is informative.

Both a business and environmental book.......2003-11-06
The New Economy Of Nature: The Quest To Make Conservation Profitable is both a business and environmental book. Gretchen C. Daily and Katherine Ellison study the ways that human self-interest can be harnessed to protect Mother Earth, as pure philanthropy combined with government regulations simply are not enough by themselves to stand against naked human greed and unchecked commercial exploitation. From crises in biodiversity, to issues of the stratosphere, The New Economy Of Nature cogently draws upon ideas, examples, and situations worldwide to lend hope for the cause of financially motivated conservation. The New Economy Of Nature is an important contribution to Environmental Studies and highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to operating a successful commercial venture through making conservation profitable.

Book Description
Successful interviewing, defined as "selecting the appropriate person for a specific position," is comparatively easy for some structured positions, such as typist or mechanic. Valid instruments to measure the key aptitudes to perform successfully in these positions are readily available and are commonly used. Even candidates for some technical positions, such as engineers or accountants, can be evaluated for critical traits like intelligence and subject. However, positions requiring a defined set of interpersonal skills, such as sales or middle, executive-level, and general management, are much more difficult to successfully recruit. Evaluating Interpersonal Skills in the Job Interview provides that much needed assistance to the interviewer. In this research-based book, Weitzul utilizes the results of thousands of interviews to devise a system to validly measure a candidate's interpersonal skills and thereby evaluate a candidate's suitability for a given position. Initially, a series of interpersonal traits are listed and defined, which provide a basis for perceiving and analyzing people in an interview. The interviewer is taught to read the "whole" person and interpret the candidate's behavior in terms of a set of interpersonal skills. The material includes sample responses to a series of application and interviewing questions. In this way, a given candidate's responses can be compared directly to the responses of other individuals with known interpersonal skills. The book also discusses methods to facilitate the interview process, maintain the conversational flow, and politely enable the candidates to reveal themselves. Evaluating Interpersonal Skills in the Job Interview can be effectively utilized by anyone who interviews for line, staff, and sales positions.
Customer Reviews:
Great book based on hard-core science rather than ancedotes........1998-07-21
I highly recommend this book to any HR professional or non-HR recruiter who is interested in a scientific approach to classifying personalities that research has shown are successful for different positions. The book and author has special experience with hiring sales and marketing people. Our firm has used Dr. Weitzul's system for many years and consider it to be the best. His other books are special-order only, but are worth it if you can find them.

In Desert Time, New Englander Diana Kappel-Smith travels from the Black Rock Desert of Oregon to the Mexican border seeking "the spirit of the American Southwest." Spirit-seeking can sometimes be a fuzzy enterprise, and Desert Time has an undercurrent of New Age grooviness. In the course of Kappel-Smith's travelogue, she gets at the heart of many things Western: the precision of Navajo weavers and Hopi silversmiths, the sinuous paths of sidewinders on sand dunes, and the quality of light that adds a surrealistic touch to the region, "like a copper-gold lens colored as if it were filled with pollen, but as dry and light as the outbreath of a kiln."

Outstanding, But Don't be Misled.......2003-08-11
First off, this is an excellent book on an exciting modern offense.
Secondly, the title is very misleading. It should be "Coaching Football's Flexbone Offense". This is not the 4- or 5-wide shotgun Spread in use at schools like Purdue, Clemson or West Virginia, nor is it the Spread Option-from-the-shotgun that Florida and others have popularized.
Rather, it is the triple option run from a Flexbone/Run-and-Shoot formation with two wide receivers and two slotbacks, with a single back behind the quarterback, who is under center.
This book is full of invaluable insights from Coach Stowers's days at Georgia Southern University, where the Flexbone attack has won six Division I-AA championships. He breaks down the running attack, based on the triple option but with a small and powerful supplement, and includes his sprint-out passing attack and some play action passes as well.
In my opinion, it would be possible to install an effective Flexbone triple option attack from Coach Stowers's book alone.
Highly recommended.

Spread but more like the Purdue Spread Offense.......2005-12-08
This book has some interesting points to make. The title is a bit deceptive for those who are trying to defend offenses modeled after Florida, Utah, Boise St., Oklahoma etc... This has more application if you are defending a multiple team that isn't a real spread team.
Thorough Coaching Resource.......2005-01-30
This book contains a myriad of strategies for defending the spread offense, whether you run an even or odd front, zone or man coverages. Included are various pressure and coverage concepts (man, zone, and combination). A special section is devoted to defending empty formations.

Not what I expected.......2003-09-16
I agree with the earlier reviewer. If you are looking for a book on the ACTUAL SPREAD OPTION OFFENSE, this isn't it. This a Run-N-Shoot coach or spread passing coach who runs a little option because it looks good on paper. I suggest you look elsewhere for a hardcore option book.
Coaching the Spread Option Offense.......2003-02-15
If you are looking for a book about the actual "spread option offense" that has been popularized by Georgia Southern and that Navy used to thrash Army this year, buy "Coaching Football's Spread Offense", by Tim Stowers (who coached at Georgia Southern) and Barry Butzer. Granger's book is a about his own hodge-podge scheme that is far more complicated than a high school offense need be. Granger is one of those offensive coaches who makes the mistake of puting quantity before quality, as his offense more resembles a "video-game" approach to the sport.

Book Description
A Gentleman Gets Dressed Up is not a book about style-it is a book about the rules-rules that will allow any man to feel more comfortable in the choices he makes about what he wears. It answers such questions as: What does "black tie optional" mean? What do I wear to a wedding at 7:00 on a Saturday evening? What do I wear to a job interview? What do I wear to a second interview, even if they observe a casual dress code? What do I wear to the Academy Awards? What do I wear to a funeral? And what button do I leave open on my suit coat?
This GentleManners book is divided into sections about specific items of clothing and specific accessories. It also delves into the different types of events to which a gentleman may find himself invited. The book concludes with sections on extreme etiquette, such as what to wear to meet the pope, and a section on fashion emergencies, such as what to do when your pants split.
- A gentleman knows that dressing up may require going to great pains; but it does not require that he feel any pain at all.
- A gentleman knows that a formal shirt does not have a button-down collar.
- A colorblind gentleman is not ashamed to mention his disability to a clothing salesperson and to ask for assistance in selecting a shirt or tie to match a suit.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide for what to wear.......2007-04-05
I bought this book for my boyfriend because he's always asking what to wear to this or that occasion, and what looks good with what. It's a quick read, and he finished it in a couple days. He keeps it on the bookshelf and does refer to it when dressing for weddings, work events, and other less common social occasions. I've read the book too - it's a concise guide with a conversational tone that avoids condescension. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good gift to a young man.
avoiding the fashion emergency.......2007-01-02
The triumphant and unostentatious stroll of Rutledge Press' 'Gentlemanners' series continues with this 2003 guide to a gentleman's kit.
There is nothing over the top or self-indulgent in these pages, just light-hearted advice for those of us who need a little help avoiding a fashion emergency. Understanding my vulnerability means keeping this little book at arm's reach on my reference shelf.
The authors understand that a gentleman is loathe to call attention to himself. Good style is a way of allowing one's more important virtues to shine through without the distraction of bad taste.
The world could use a little more of that.
Gentleman.......2006-08-03
Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is vastly superior in terms of both content and comprehensiveness. Generally speaking, I found the "Gentelemen" book series to be either common sense or just plain wrong. If you want a very short reference guide, though, this is better than nothing.
Great Additional Resource.......2005-08-15
I bought this for my husband (the dapper clothes horse) just because I saw it in my Gold Box. He is a strict adherent to Flusser, so I took a risk and ordered this because it was low priced.
Turned out to be a great bargain, and a nice surprise that he enjoyed. While he says there was no revolutionary information, it was a good read and great additional resource. Definitely recommended!
Amusing and worthwhile.......2005-01-13
This book is both helpful and entertaining. Its style, which amounts to a compilation of aphorisms--some of them clever--makes it an easy read.
As a veteran of the East Coast button-down collar and navy-blue suit brigade, I was surprised to learn as much as I did about men's attire, although I didn't necessarily agree with everything the book has to offer. But the same was true with "How to Be a Gentleman," where, for example, the author says it's perfectly acceptable for a well-dressed gentlemen to go to church without socks. In "A Gentleman Gets Dressed Up," he devotes an amusing amount of ink to the subject of letting out waistlines to accommodate increases of girth and being prepared to mop up excesses of perspiration. Such curiosities can probably be attributed to the books' regional slant--am I right in assuming that the author is a Southerner?
If it sounds like what you need, this book is amusing and worthwhile, but be prepared for a few odd remarks that clearly come from a corpulent Southerner who sweats a lot.

This is an all around great book for young adults. This book has mystery, suspense, and a bit of melodrama. Just the right mix to keep young adult readers transfixed. You keep on turning pages and the book pratically reads itself. Another well written book from a good author.
A Spine-tingling, Nail-biting, Hair-raising Good Read!.......2000-02-27
Like in her other book, "Bottles of Eight and Pieces of Rum", the author really shows how thoroughly her work is researched. This story of two orphaned sisters is set in San Francisco around the turn of the century. Not only is the relationship of the girls extremely well fleshed out and very moving, but the story-line itself is fast-moving, suspenseful and very exciting. I read this book for the purposes (in part) of making sure it was suitable for my 10 year-old to read. What I found was that not only was it suitable for my child, I couldn't put it down either. This is a moving, gripping story that is wonderfully written and entertaining. I highly recommend it to all ages, and for boys and girls alike.
Truly a Thriller!.......2000-02-27
I didn't know what was going to happen, I couldn't put the book down! I felt like I was in the book, like I was watching things happen-- like a spy, or something. The story was a mix of suspense, mystery, adventure and unexpected events! I liked how the two sisters worked together to come out of a really tight fix. I liked how the bad characters were really evil--it wasn't just a story, it was a real thing that could happen in life. The characters were really real and it was funny at times what they did, and sad too, sometimes. I like how the story was put together, because it was like a sandwich. It didn't just have bread, it had lots of everything in it (with a toothpick on top!). I would recommend this book for everybody!
