Book Description
This book comprehensively covers the debatable issues regarding the post-September 11th wave of terrorism, the multiple roots of this deadly new form of international violence, and the leading ideas being considered as means for the war on global terrorism to be won. Informed and informative interpretations, written by the world's most authoritative scholars especially for this book, present a balanced and accessible set of essays and chapters describing the new international terrain that has emerged in the wake of 9-11. A three-part organization breaks the subject of global terrorism into three categories of analysis, and demonstrates to readers that how terrorism is defined will shape the conclusions that are reached about its causes and remedies. For analyzing present and future acts of terrorism, creating awareness of the obstacles to accurately understanding it, and consideration of the strategies for containing the destructiveness of this deadly phenomena.
Customer Reviews:
Best Terrorism Book.......2006-09-15
I rarely give five stars to anything, but this is quite possibly the best terrorism book ever, at least in terms of the sample of readings. Twenty-one chapters in all, the contributors all being well-known scholars in the political science field mainly. The textbook is very scholarly, divided into three parts, corresponding to the purposes of science: description, explanation, and prescription. Each part is excellent, and the book is well-balanced. Part I (description/characteristics)is a little heavy on the theoretical side, especially where there is some repetitive use of the phrase "post-modern" and exploration of historical side roads, but doesn't devolve into a bunch of navel-gazing over definitions and typologies like so many other books do. One could actually "use" the stuff in Part I, either for further theory development or other grounded purposes. Part II (explanation/causes) is probably what most readers would turn to first. It's nothing more than a collection of writings by all the luminaries in the field: Crenshaw, Wilkinson, Rubenstein, Laqueur, Howell, Juergensmeyer, Lewis, and Gurr. One couldn't ask for a better lineup, and although some of the articles have been previously published, a lot of them look like they were updated and revised for this book. Selection bias is always a possibility with books of this kind, and to be sure, the book is overall critical of mindless understanding approaches to counterterrorism, but not overly concessionistic. Military solutions are discussed, and lesser-known authors like Howell write about darwinistic solutions like letting failed states collapse on their own. However, Part III has counterweighting articles like Falk and Johnson's excellent discussions of why the war on terrorism is a moral war against "evil" (in the non-metaphysical sense). The third part of the book isn't about strategy or grand strategy, as one might expect, but is about tactics and counter-tactics, representing, in short, as good of a primer as any, on the political science approaches to counterterrorism option selection. I highly recommend this little book be read by anyone who wants to quickly become an erudite scholar of terrorism. It's highly educative.

Description:
This paper determines the relationships between the dependent variables, presence of trees in front garden and front garden type, and socio-economic, environmental and demographic variables, at the suburb scale in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Garden type, largely following a pre-existing classification, and the presence/absence of trees, were recorded from 50 randomly located front gardens in each of 31 suburbs. The suburbs were classified into four groups on the basis of their spectrum of garden types and the percentage frequency of trees. Group one consisted of coastal suburbs of relatively high socio-economic status. Group 2 consisted of suburbs of moderate socio-economic status. Group 3 consisted of the poorest suburbs. The fourth group was composed of suburbs of high socio-economic status, located close to the centre of the city in hilly terrain. All except the rarest garden type occurred in all four groups of suburbs. Multiple regression and general linear models were used to predict tree presence, and the prevalence of particular garden types at the suburb level. Household income was the best predictor of the percentage frequency of trees in front gardens. The variables that appeared in models for garden types were: the percentage of the population with tertiary education (four instances); percentage of population older than 65 years (4); household income (3); percentage of households renting dwellings (3); altitude (3), rainfall (3); unemployment rate (2); percentage of population born in Australia (2); percentage of medium-sized gardens (2); suburb age (1); percentage of workforce in professional and managerial occupations (1). The 12 garden types that could be modelled responded individualistically to these independent variables.

Information from doctors, trainers, coaches, pitchers, biomechanical experts, and researchers make this the first complete book on pitcher health. Saving the Pitcher is a must read for anyone who wants solidly researched data from an impartial baseball thinker....It is the right book, by the right guy, for the right reason, at the right time. --Dr. Tom House, National Pitching Association.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Important if Technical read on Pitching.......2005-05-16
I have to say I found this book griping. It was well written and as odd as this might sound, I found it hard to put down.
Will Carroll while not a medical professional is the top writer in the field of baseball injuries, writing both for "Under the Knife" for Baseball Prospectus website and his own blog The Juice. He makes it his business to know and understand baseball injuries and has a style that explains very complicated medical issues to lay people like myself.
This book makes a fascinating read, and I would highly recommend it for baseball fans (anyone interested in learning more about the game within the game), parents of young pitchers or anyone involved in the teaching of baseball skills.
Every parent should read this book.......2004-09-19
A well researched book that every parent and coach should read. This book provides simple guidelines and suggestions on how every person involved in the game can help prevent the growing number of arm injuries to pitchers. Despite the research, this book is not condecending in it's tone or hard to read. Since it's publication, Carroll has continued to solidify his reputation as a tremendous source on sports injuries.
Could Be Dangerous.......2004-07-17
A book like this could be dangerous for inexperienced pitchers. Mr. Carroll is not a physician or trainer.
I strongly recommend you consult a professional if you plan on using his drills.
Sure wish Jim Hendry would pick up a copy . . ........2004-07-17
This book has the potential to change the face of baseball, if only everyone would take the time to read it. The fact that so many teams still do not understand the basic principles laid forth in this book is downright sad.
Informative and Entertaining.......2004-07-16
While Mr. Carroll is not a doctor nor an athletic trainer - hs has a skill set that is unmatched in modern baseball. He has a network of connections in MLB that makes his online column a must-read, he is a good writer and has a tremendous knowledge of the history of sports medicine.
These skills come forth in this book. It's a quick read that is accessible to fans and useful to coaches and players. The chapter on Velocity Loss shows how mindless fans like myself can see when a player is truly fatiguing on the hill.
I found this book to be interesting, informative and one of the top baseball books released this year. I would love to see my favorite team apply a lot of things that Will recommends here and even try the 4-man rotation out.
A great first book, Mr. Carroll, I look forward to number two.

Becoming a Wedding Planner.......2006-03-22
I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in becoming a wedding planner. I could have saved myself a lot of time and trouble if I had purchased this book before I started my own research. Amazing book!!
Wedding Planner/Coordinator Guide .......2005-09-10
I loved this book because it didn't totally focus on the aspect of becoming a wedding planner, but also the more silent topics. It provided me with perfect examples of purchase orders, service requests, billing, and the how to's of marketing my future business. One can apply the information in this book to almost any personal business with a little tweeking of words and services, of course.... Highly recommend the FabJob Guide to becoming anything your heart desires!!!
Dynamite!.......2005-08-12
For the size and intent, this is the best book on the market. If you are thiking of becoming a professional wedding planner, this introductory book covers all the things you will have to learn. What it doesn't cover in detail, it points you in the direction of where you can find more information, with recommended websites and book titles. What it won't do, however, is teach you all the minute and various specific details that apply to your market and jurisdiction. As with any business, you still have to do a lot of legwork before you can actually make any money. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know exactly what's involved in getting started.

Booo! This is the best book to put me to sleep!.......2006-11-14
Hi I am a 10 year old girl and I had to read this book for class and I hated it! Yah it does give alot of detail and historical facts but it is boring. This book is about a girl named Megan who has a father that owns the biggest department store in Johnstown and her trip through her tough times in the Johnstown Flood with the new friends that she has made. Whopie Doo! Now, I am a person that likes mostly funny books but I do like historical books. It is not a book that you would get into then something really bad happens and you jump. No, when something really bad happens I go, Oh...Ok...Whatever. So if you want a good book to read, do not pick this one up.
The Terrible Wave (the Terrible Book).......2001-11-12
The Terrible Wave, in my opinion, was too fast-paced and didn't
include characters' feelings enough. While the subject was interesting, it did not include the characters' deeper thoughts
that would have made this subject even more interesting -- to
capture the fear that happened during such a traumatic time.
A Captivating Story.......2000-03-01
THIS BOOK IS GREAT! I REALLY COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! IT WAS CAPTIVATING! IT WASN'T THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD BUT I STILL REALLY RECOMEND IT! I REALLY LIKED IT! I THINK YOU WILL TOO!

As the introduction explains, the watercolor paintings that accompany this special edition of the very first Curious George story made their way out of Paris on the back of Hans Rey's bicycle, as he and his wife, Margaret, narrowly escaped the German occupation. By way of Spain and Brazil, Rey and his work came to the United States, where cash-strapped children's publishers always required "color separation" art--i.e., a different drawing for each color. So Rey's watercolors were not used, and for subsequent books he never even did them; only now, for the first time, has that first set been used directly. Otherwise, it's the story you probably already know, though a bit more luxuriously produced, about how Curious George came to make life a lot more interesting for the Man in the Yellow Hat. (Ages 3 to 8) --Richard Farr
Book Description
On June 14, 1940, Hans and Margret Rey fled Paris as the German army invaded the city. Escaping on bicycles, they took only winter coats and four picture books strapped to the racks. Among those books were the watercolors and a rough text for Fifi, later known to the world as Curious George. However, when Curious George was actually published in the United States in 1941, these original watercolors were not used for the printing. Hans Rey was required by his editor to redraw the entire book, creating preseparated art, so that costs would be minimal. The Reys retained the original art and would, on rare occasion, treat carefully chosen friends and collectors to George as he was first envisioned in Paris those many years ago. During their lifetimes they parted with only five pieces of the extraordinary art. For this edition, the original Curious George drawings have been retrieved and reassembled, using modern reproductive techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A Gnostic Fable???.......2006-03-13
Some people have seen in this book echoes of the slave trade or animal exploitation.
But I see in this story, a gnostic fable with echoes of Kabbalism and even Mormonism.
George is in his African Paradise when a mysterious God-like stranger, who is nameless, takes advantage of George's curiosity and kidnaps him away to a much harsher world where his curiousity continues to get him into trouble, thereby enabling him to learn lessons he couldn't learn any other way.
To me this is almost like the myth of the garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve's curiosity impel them to partake of the fruit and thus be exiled into the Lone and Dreary World.
It is a breach of the rules, but a necessary breach of the rules. There is the mystery.
And is the Man in the Yellow Hat God or is he Satan? Is he the Temptor or the Protector???
Or are the Temptor and the Protector both aspects of the same Deity.
These questions, of course, do not concern George. He is too busy exploring the world and having fun.
The rules of the Lone and Dreary World are arbitrary, meaningless and harsh. George gets thrown into jail for accidentally calling the fire department. He is sad for a while but finagles a clever escape.
No matter what happens to him....whether he is seconds away from drowning in the ocean, or about to be eloctrocuted on his high-electric wire walk, or floating high above the city clinging for dear life to a bunch of helium balloons, George never, ever loses his cool, and he always manages to have a good time.
So is curiosity bad? Is breaking the rules bad?
The underlying message of these books is that both of these things are necessary. There would be no story without curiousity. No adventure. No learning. No eternal progression.
George was born to be curious and to encourage others to be curious while making them well aware of the consequences.
And while George is cordial towards the Man in the Yellow Hat, he (like Job in the Bible) keeps his own ways before him, seeks counsel, first of all, in his own heart, which is above all curious, and gathers his wisdom, as we all must, from his own, most curious experiences.
Long Live George, the coolest monkey ever!
curious george.......2006-03-10
I bought this for my daughter's 4th birthday. What can you say about a classic? She loves this curious monkey and all of the trouble he gets himself into!
I LOVE THESE BOOKS!.......2006-02-19
Everyone needs to read these books, especially to their kids! They will be a pleasant childhood memory for a lifetime. In addition, many who have read this book will enjoy the new movie, which I highly rate, also. Thank you and I hope you decide to purchase this book.
I Love This Book And All The Other Curious George Books Too!.......2005-10-16
I love the Curious George books, I especially like the book where George goes to the hosiptal and gets into all sorts of troubles because of his curiosity but I like this book too because it's the first one in the series!
Adorable!.......2005-08-13
I love the Curious George books and this one is one of my favorites.
George is so adorable! I love how he is always getting into mischief!
