nice read but not sufficiently hands on.......2006-02-21
At first, i was enthoused by the uplifting style in which the book is written. That is an asset in itselft as it contributes to giving you a positive attitude. But once you have finished the book and try to elaborate some plan to implement some long term goals, you reckon that there is no specific help on how to define short term goals which is in essence the most important message of the book. It is apparent that the autors have extensive experience sport psychology and i think the book is actually more helpful if you are into weight lifting than into trading as it is somewhat more difficult to formulate goals that relate to emotional issues than easily measurable results in sports (power, speed etc.) and fixing short term monetary goals is counterproductive as the book states itself as the most important thing in trading is consistency. So there is no information on how to put the ideas into practise which considerabely decreases the practical value of the book.
Light reading.......2004-01-01
Buy Elder's trading for a living. This book is so light that I read it in one night and listed it on Amazon to sell the next day.
The concept is okay. The book is not........2003-09-07
I did have great expectation on this book. I had been quite disappointed. Instead of elaborating on the similarities for playing pro sports and trading, it's more like a business management book emphasizing on setting achievable, strategic, measurable, controllable, flexible and positive goals of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly time span. I am not kidding. The authors did put tables of the above goals for you to fill in te blank. Though the authors also had chapters on motivation, concentration, pressure handling, routine setting, loss handling stuff but the coverage of them, in my opinion as a veteran trader and frequent trading book lover, were far from sufficient and sophisticated to help traders to turn themselves into a pro athlete and win this highly competitive game. The analogy is brilliant, but is only limited to the title. The content is not. It's just like reading one of those common psychology or life management books.
get your psyche straight!.......2003-02-14
this book gives you a step by step approach to getting, and maintaining the proper mind set needed to trade successfuly.
easy reading, and recommended.
Trader, Know Thyself.......2002-04-16
For both new and experienced traders, The Trading Athlete is a welcome addition to the subject of understanding the importance of trading psychology. Trading is a very difficult profession if you are not mentally prepared. By using sports analogies and comparing the athlete to the trader, the authors provide an easy-to-understand approach to the subject matter. Having traded equities and futures for the past eight years, I've concluded that conquering trading psychology is 90% of the battle to becoming a consistent and profitable trader. Trading psychology is such a critical aspect of trading that I included two chapters on the subject in my book Day Trading on the Edge: A Look Before You Leap Guide to Extreme Investing.
The authors, a sports psychologist and online trader (with prior trading experience at the CME and CBOT, and currently a trading coach) have produced a clearly written, easy-to-read book that supplements books by Dr. Alexander Elder, Ari Kiev, and Mark Douglas among the best books on trading psychology.
The major subjects covered in this book include:
- Mental keys
-Confidence building and dealing with failure
-How to handle losses
-Replacing negative thinking with productivity
-Handling pressure
-Why trading for revenge is a disaster
-How to overcome fear and prevent panic
-How to concentrate
-Enjoying your success
Each chapter is sprinkled with appropriate quotes that bring home the key points.
The Trading Athlete provides a self-evaluation form covering: goal setting, confidence, positive trading attitude, energizing, anger management, pressure, concentration, and flow. It also provides actual relaxation strategies to reduce stress
Also included in an appendix is a summary of the key points (4-10 or more) of each chapter. There are also very useful worksheets that can be used to record your own mission statement including your strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Additional worksheets are provided for recording your trading rules, goals for the week, month and year with checklists to determine if you are meeting them. Another worksheet covers a weekly performance log for recording each trade, its outcome and your comments about it.
In summary, the Trading Athlete, if read carefully and if you use the worksheets provided, will provide you with a solid foundation for understanding yourself and conquering your trading fears and inadequacies. Ultimately your trading should improve for the better. This book is an excellent resource for all traders. I highly recommend this book.

A Simply Wonderful Book.......2007-06-01
Congratulations on this book Mr James. and the research which went into it. The data on the Byerleys of that era is rather obscure, and the horse has always been referred to as an Arabian rather than the Turk it was. Thank you for clearing up many of these questions, and reading about the Colonel (I share his name and lived near Goldsborough in my youth when talk of the Turk was frequent)was a great thrill. I understand that the Byerley line died out with his children, but thats another story.....
Did you love Hildalgo?.......2007-05-07
Then you will enjoy this book. The epic adventure of a horse, Black Beauty style. Well researched and written in a captivating manner, the author weaves and interesting story out of threads of truth. Ofcourse, I love Thoroughbreds!
The Byerley Turk: The incredible story of the world's first thoroughbred.......2007-01-17
This was one of the best horse stories I have read in a long time. I couldn't put it down. I thought that Jeremy James did a wonderful job of writing and interpreting the history of this horse and the people that were connected to him. I happen to love horses but I think that this book would appeal to almost anyone. I'm sure that I will read it again.
I was disappointed........2006-12-28
The horse is known to history as a foundation sire. I expected much more emphasis on his contributions to thoroughbred history (there are are no notes on who he sired, how fast they ran, what they won, or when his significance was noted, etc).
There is a lot of dialogue, so to me this is not a true "nonfiction" work. It is an historical novel, well researched it seems, but it is not true nonfiction.
High Impact, Action, Emotion..........2006-06-20
"The Byerley Turk: The Incredible Story of the World's First Thoroughbred", is a fantastic story, masterfully told. It is a story of a horse, from his auspicious birth while in the care of his Turkish groom, to his peaceful death while in the care of the wealthy Englishman, Robert Byerley. It is most compelling, and contains a graphic intensity that the author Jeremy James, who has knowledge and experience with horses, weaves into his story.
Jeremy James has the ability to take you inside the landscape, and into the hearts of horses and of men. In fact, the way that this story is told, gives insight into an era that is long gone. Buildings, scenery, attire, relationships, protocol, and events are lavishly described. It gives insight to vastly different cultures in conflict, and yet the element of the human heart, and the heart of the horse are amplified throughout. The author has an uncanny ability to involve the reader, so that the passions, horrors, joys and sorrows, are deeply felt.
This is a story of trust, loyalty, and supreme athleticism, during a time of war and upheaval. There are heroic deeds performed as a matter of fact, and in retrospect, deeds with a seemingly supernatural aura... deeds which connected the events with their destiny. There are elements of beauty amongst the serious gore. Fear and friendship, supreme intellect, slavery, survival, suffering and opportunity are juxtaposed inexorably into the landscape spanning from the Ottoman Empire, to Ireland.
The stallion and his groom inspire awe and change, where ever they go. The relationships that they offer are of such a deep and profound nature, that, whether they are at home, or in a foreign land, at times it seems that they are from a different world altogether.
There are emotionally charged sequences of courage and sacrifice made in the name of love, not war. This story illustrates the power of deep relationships, the power of `home', and the transformative power of understanding.
It is not a story for the faint-hearted. The senses are floridly described in scenes of death, stress and suffering. Partings are painful. Love is not a petty emotion. Devotion is not a fleeting fulfillment of convenience. It is a book of extremes. Extreme beauty and style...extreme dedication, extreme danger, and the fantastic power of a strong-willed and defiant stallion, and the tender moments he creates when the touch of a whisker brings about peace and comfort...
It is the story of how Robert Byerley came to be in possession of the Turkish horse known as the Byerley Turk. Well researched and well presented, it is a wonderful use of the novel in depicting a time in history. It successfully captivates the imagination, and allows the reader to understand the importance of the horse in World History.
Congratulations to Jeremy James.

Good price for a used book.......2007-10-03
Book was noticeably used but was in readable condition and will be used for a while. Arrived in timely manner.
A handy guide to have around.......2007-07-03
I am fairly new to ASL, and I find this fairly easy to use. While no means comprehensive, it does have a number of signs you will probably need in your daily life. While it does use drawings, it also tells the user what handshapes to use and how to move them. At the back is the alphabet and numerals.
I don't think this should be someone's only guide to ASL, but it is a good supplement to carry with you to practice.
Communication bonus.......2006-08-15
We have an employee that was born deaf. He has been to the best schools for the deaf available in this area since he was a child. I would consider him an expert at the different sign languages and also lip reading. When he looked at this book he let me know that it was very good with up to date signs and easy to understand examples. I ordered three copies for use at work and one for him. This book has at least 4500 signs. He explained that he knew over 3000 signs but couldn't possibly know or remember them all. This is a great reference for all of us. A real communication bonus.
Awesome ASL Dictionary!.......2006-07-15
I love this book. It's actually my 2nd copy. I have been teaching my 2 year old hearing son ASL since he was 3 months old. I'm forever going to this dictionary to look up a new word. It is really comprehensive. There have only been a few times I haven't found a word I was looking for.
One thing I don't like is the paper in this printing of the book. It is more like newspaper print. The original one I bought is white paper. It does make a difference.
I like this book also for the pictures. They are pretty easy to understand.
Along with my Signing Time videos and one online ASL dictionary, this is one of my top favorite ASL resourses.
I recommend to everyone & have even bought as a babyshower gift.
Please don't hesitate to buy this book if you need an ASL reference!!!
Useful, but not as perfect as I'd hoped........2006-06-10
For some time, we've had some flash cards and a small book containing signs to teach our son, who is nearly 1 1/2. I found the little book and cards to be frustrating for multiple reasons. The flash cards get out of alphabetical order easily, so it's hard to look something up; and there are only about 50-60 signs featured in each set. Words that my son would really like to be able to express, like "light" and "fan" and "otter" and "frog," are missing. Additionally, some of the words from the book and flash cards overlap, but the two formats disagree about what the signs are!
So, based on the reviews and on the number of signs included, I couldn't wait to get the Random House Webster's Concise American Sign Language Dictionary. The book does have a lot going for it. If you know the alphabet in sign language (and it's included in the book, in case you don't), the descriptions of signs really help clarify the illustrations. As soon as we got the book, I looked up "light" and "frog," and I was delighted to be able to sign them to my son. Catching my excitement, he signed "light" back right away. But "otter" was missing from the dictionary. "Well," I thought, "maybe there is no sign for 'otter.'" No huge loss, since my son does an endearing otter impression anyway.
But then I discovered that "fan" has also been left out of the dictionary. "Fan" is a pretty basic and common word, so I assume that there is a specific sign for it.
Examples of words that ARE included: ascend, delegate, optimistic, sightseeing, humid, dominoes, rehabilitation, sterilization, robot, sacrifice, slavery, porpoise, hawk, pimples, zap, worship, prostitute, puzzle, diamond, lesbian, loiter, merchandise.
Examples of words that AREN'T included: otter, squash, fan, beaver, whale, moose, ceiling, kaleidoscope, owl, crow, robin, quail, raven, tiger, zebra, wolf, coyote, tractor, mow, guava, tortilla, quesadilla, spinach, wheel, cactus, cardinal.
Being able to say words like "rehabilitation" is definitely useful; it would take a long time to spell them out. But I think I probably talk about fans more often than I talk about robots. This is a self-proclaimed concise dictionary, and there is a note at the beginning of the book about which words were included and which words weren't (and why), but that still doesn't help me sign "squash" or "moose."
I don't know that anyone cares, but the copy of this book that we received does have a slightly different cover than the one pictured. The picture shows hands in a single sign, whereas our book features five full-color photos of a woman signing. I actually like the one we got better than the one pictured.
Oh, and previous reviews indicate that the alphabet and numbers are listed in the back of the book. Numbers are still at the back of the book, but each letter of the alphabet now appears at the start of the section of words beginning with that letter.
Overall, I was torn between giving the book three stars and four. I really like the descriptions of how to do signs, but that only helps when the word I want to sign is in the dictionary.
