Book Description

The automotive industry ranks among the most significant business phenomena of the 20th century and remains vitally important today, accounting for almost 11% of the GDP of North America, Europe and Japan and one in nine jobs. Although its products have had a fundamental impact on modern society in economic and social terms, the industry has found it hard to adjust to contemporary conditions and is thus no longer esteemed in capital markets. Riven with internal contradictions that inhibit reform, it now faces a stark choice between years of strife or radical change. Highlighting the challenges and opportunities that exist for managers, legislators, financial institutions and potential industry entrants, this book is a wake-up call for those who work in the automotive industry. Most of all, it gives us all cause to reflect on the value of mobility, today and tomorrow. Graeme Maxton is director of AutoPolis, a firm that specializes in the structures and dynamics of the world automotive industry and helps clients position themselves for profitable growth. He is responsible for its activities in Asia and since 1992, has been closely affiliated with the Economist Newspaper Group and chairs all of The Economist's automotive industry conferences throughout the world. He writes for Business China, Business Asia, and various other Group publications, as well as for numerous newspapers throughout Europe and Asia. He is also a television, radio, and press commentator on the industry. Maxton and Wormald were co-authors of Driving Over a Cliff? Business Lessons from the World's Car Industry (Addison Wesley, 1994), which was nominated for the Financial Times Best Book about Business Award. John Wormald is a director and co-founder of Autopolis. He has worked in and for the automotive industry for over 25 years. He advises vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, distribution and service companies, and financial and government institutions, with a particular emphasis on the downstream distribution and service sectors of the industry. He regularly lectures about the industry, speaks at industry conferences, writes for automotive and general publications, and is quoted and interviewed in the media. He is a co-author of Driving Over a Cliff?

5 out of 5 stars Lays out the woes of the modern auto industry, and gives possible solutions.......2007-02-10

In Time for a Model Change, two industry veterans tell why the modern auto industry is in such sad shape. As the globe warms and oil is burned up, we need innovative cars that push the envelope with new technologies, such as plug-in hybrids and electrics.

Yet the carmakers struggle to stay afloat, with no money to spend on such a drastic model change. And no strategic plan to follow even if they had the money. So instead of innovation, we get a steady proliferation of the same old models, with minor variations, all of the carmakers putting out their "me too" offerings that drive up expenses, drive down sale prices, and drive the carmakers out of business.

Time for a Model Change suggests a solution. Unbundle the production of cars. Let the carmakers build to their strengths. Italian carmakers, for example, should not try to compete with their own vertically integrated line of cars. Instead, focus on car bodies, doing the styling that they can do better than others. And so on.

Reflecting their connection with The Economist magazine, the authors of Time for a Model Change make their case thoughtfully and carefully. The many graphs, diagrams, and pictures (black and white only) throughout the book add a great deal to a reader's understanding of the industry. This book, though quite sophisticated in its analysis, will not be too difficult for the general reader.

My only complaint about the book, if I even call it that, is the feeling of doom and gloom that pervades it. Things are not that bad. But there is no question that the "industry of industries" will be changing, one way or another. As related technologies continue to improve, someone is going to figure out how to make money in this huge industry.

5 out of 5 stars An Industry With a Difficult Future.......2005-02-04

This is an analysis of the world wide automobile industry by a pair of close observers who are outside the direct employment of the auto makers.

The auto industry is huge, it's been developing for a hundred. In addition there is a huge supplementary industry in the form of supplying oil, building highways, insuring, repairing, racing, and hundreds of other professions.

The problems forseen by the authors seem so obvious that you wonder why the automoile companies don't see it. Of course they probably do, but their senior management couldn't say anything that might affect their stock prices. If they did, they would get sued by everyone who lost money on their stock.

This is an excellent book on the automotive industry and in effect on our whole economy.

      Book Description

Flex Style Negotiating is a 360-degree assessment-based performance improvement program for all professionals who rely on effective negotiation skills. It profiles participants' preferred negotiation styles and defines legitimate versus illegitimate behaviors.

Flex Style Negotiating uses a situational model to explain the negotiation process. Participants are taught to diagnose negotiation situations and adapt their behavior to maximize the likelihood of a successful outcome. Not only does the program define the behaviors that make up the participant's style, it suggests alternative behaviors the negotiator can use in order to "flex their style" more readily and in more situations.

Flex Style Negotiating includes two instruments, a strategic job aid, and a combination reproducible Participant's Workbook/Instructor's Manual. The instruments are the Behavioral Style Assessment/Self and the Behavioral Style Assessment/Other. The job aid is the Situational Strategy Selector.

The Instructor's Manual explores topics such as personal approaches to conflict, different styles of negotiation, and advanced techniques for competition and collaboration. It contains experiential activities for exploring conflict and creativity, role plays for negotiation leadership and anger, and, overall, represents a solid game plan for developing flexible negotiation skills.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than Living Poor.......2007-01-19

Moritz Thomsen's first book, Living Poor, was an account of his experience living in the coastal village of Rioverde, Ecuador during his Peace Corps service. This is an excellent read, on par with Rohinton Mistry's novel, A Fine Balance, in that it is a powerful depiction of poverty. In the Farm on the River Emeralds Thompsen returns to Ecuador to purchase and literally hack a farm out of the jungle with his friend Ramon from Rioverde.

The more familiar travel writer Paul Theroux has called Thomsen one of America's best writers. Theroux writes more of the journey and less of the destination. Thomsen is all about the destination. This book places you firmly on the farm near the village of Male, Ecuador. As Thomsen and Ramon struggle to establish the farm, hire workers, and adjust to the community he relates the struggle and the place to you with portrait accuracy of all the characters involved. I have never read an author in my 50+ years that describes the people in his book with such rich, succinct, and novel detail.

In reading this book you will know what it is like living in rural Ecuador and will come to know those of the village from the ridiculous, and tragic Dalmiro to successful yet obscessed Ramon.
This book is so good that once when I had lost my bookmark upon rereading passages that I had covered I found myself not wanting to skip over them but continued to reread to where I had left off as I savored Thomsen's descriptions, humor, exasperating experiences, and thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Latin American struggles.......2003-12-16

This is the story of a man who leaves his broken personal life behind, and with the last dollar in his pocket, joins the peace corps. He is sent to Equator, and never comes home. Instead, after his service (which he does double time of) is over, he buys some land with his Latin American friend who is struggling to break out of poverty and eventually does to the tune of much prejudice and complication. This is the story of that tropical farm, where this incredibly intelligent and sensitive man struggles to eke out a living for himself, and a life. Moritz's voice is "warhorse, iconoclast, storytelling" in the words of Lawrence Millman. He lived in voluntary poverty, and although he did not life the life of one the man was born to write. One of the top three books I have ever read.

            Book Description

As most of the essays in this volume were written in a little bark-covered study that is surrounded on all sides by vineyards, the author thought it not inappropriate to go to the vine for a title for the collection. The "leaf" may stand very well for the nature sketches, and the "tendril" may symbolize those other papers in which he has groped his way in some of the great problems, seeking some law or truth to cling to. The tendril is blind, but it is sensitive and outreaching, and aided by the wind, never ceases to feel this way and that of support. Whatever it touches it clings to. One vine will cling to another, or one arm cling to another arm of the same vine. It has no power to select or discriminate - its one overmastering impulse is to cling, no matter to what. Where the tendril strikes the wire, or hooks that sensitive finger around it, how quickly it tightens its hold and winds itself round and round! In time it becomes almost as hard as the wire itself.

Burroughs' ruminations and philosophizing about The Art of Seeing, Human Traits in the Animals, The Divine Soil, nesting times of birds, ancestry of man, and more.

John Burroughs was one of the earliest and most articulate pioneers of the United States conservation movement, publishing twenty-eight books on the natural world during the height of the Industrial Revolution. As an author, teacher, and poet, he wrote with intimacy and feeling, illustrating verbal landscapes and providing philosophical insights about the environment.

People by the hundreds of thousands relished his writings. His friends included Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, and John Muir. Burroughs was dedicated to studying the world and making nature come to life on the written page.

In the last decades of the 19th century, his prolific nature essays helped spawn the nature study movement and made him an international celebrity.

There are two things no dedicated fly-fisher can really have enough of: a decent selection of flies on the stream and a decent selection of John Gierach off of it. Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders should go a good way toward satisfying the latter. In this "greatest hits" of essays culled from Gierach's previous collections, the genial wit and astute observer behind Another Lousy Day in Paradise, Dances with Trout, and Trout Bum reels in 40 of his favorite keepers. Considering the quality of Gierach's writing, calling Headwaters a "treasury" is no fish tale at all.

Reading Leaky Waders is like recalling some memorably productive afternoons on the stream with an old fishing buddy. Writing about his sport and his adventures, Gierach is naturally writing about much more: "I've always tried to figure out what a story is about," he'll admit readily. "It's something other than the fishing but that wouldn't have come up without the fishing." As in "The Purist," an essay from The View from Rat Lake: it's vintage Gierach, an excuse to use fishing to open a window onto human nature. "What is it about fly-fishing," he asks,

that attracts ... those people who must engineer a corner of their lives--sometimes a pretty large corner--where things have to be done properly? I'm not sure I know, but whatever it is, it's why the sport can be used to define the very existence of the practitioner.
From there, he connects, with deft precision, the seemingly diverse strands of his own experience as a plumber's helper, a fire on the Cuyahoga River, Zen, a little fishing history, a brief meditation on the dry fly, B.B. King, such noted anglers as G.E.M. Skues and Gierach's own great fishing accomplice A.K. Best, Idaho's Three Rivers Ranch on the Henry's Fork, and a graceful dismissal of snootiness and pretension. It's a skillful performance. Before you're finished with Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders, you'll find 39 more that are just as good. --Jeff Silverman

                              Book Description

Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders collects forty of John Gierach's finest essays on fishing from six of his books. Like all his writing, these essays are seasoned by a keen sense of observation and a deep knowledge and love of fishing lore, leavened by a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Gierach often begins with an observation that soon leads to something below the surface, which he finds and successfully lands. As Gierach says, writing is a lot like fishing.

This is the first anthology of John Gierach's work, a collection that is sure to delight both die-hard fans and new readers alike. To enter Gierach's world is to experience the daily wonder, challenge, and occasional absurdity of the fishing life -- from such rituals as the preparation of camp coffee (for best results, serve in a tin cup) to the random, revelatory surprises, such as the flashing beauty of a grayling leaping out of the water. Whether he's catching fish or musing on the ones that got away, Gierach is always entertaining and enlightening, writing with his own inimitable blend of grace and style, passion and wit.

His fans don't need to be told, because it has already happened to them. All it really takes is a few paragraphs. Open up any one of John Gierach's perennially popular fishing tales, and just like that, it's all over. He's got you -- hook, line, and sinker. Sports Illustrated got it right with this comparison: "If Mark Twain were alive and a modern-day fly fisherman, he still would be hard put to top John Gierach in the one-liner department". The Richmond Times-Dispatch speaks for countless readers in calling Gierach "as funny, sad, irreverent, and wise as they come", and fisherman-writer-publisher Nick Lyons calls Gierach's writing "as human and witty and memorable and perceptive as any prose of its kind".

With Headwaters, which arrives just in time for Father's Day, the author selects and introduces forty of his personal favorites from bestsellers past, including such classics as "Camp Coffee" and "On the Road" from Trout Bum, "The Purist" and "In Camp" from The View from Rat Lake, as well as "Montana" and the title essay from Even Brook Trout Get the Blues. As passionate as it is effortlessly hip, Headwaters is the ideal introduction for a new legion of Gierach fans, and a perfect catch for Gierach's already devoted readers.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. John's insights into flyfishing and it's connection with day-to-day life are phenominal. I'm ready to buy a camper, quit work and spend the rest of my days cruising fron stream to stream.

John is one funny guy. And he knows the outdoors. His cast of characters make reading this series of short stories about fishing, camping, and life outdoors a real pleasure. I only hope his other books are as enjoyable as this one.

I always page to John Gierach's column first when the Fly Rod and Reel magazine shows up in the mail box. This was a wonderful read for a flyfisherman in Minnesota in the winter. The thoughts this book brought forth kept me going through the long (too cold to fish) winter.

John's writing is in one of those styles you look forward to crummy weather so you can justify sitting down and getting a kick out of his antics. To do otherwise, well heck, you'd feel like he'd wag a finger at you and ask, "Why the hell aren't you fishing you dolt!? See that hatch? See that rise? Drop my book and tie into those beautiful little torpedos!"

The stories are marvelous. John's fishing and hunting partners are a hoot. And I can't help but think that there's some cryptic means of deciphering his secret fishing spots by selecting every third letter of every ninth word of every other paragraph... or something like that.

The illustrations are GREAT! Hope I can find a garage sale edition of the book so I can demolish it for the pictures.

John, great job and hope your St. Vrain is chugging along for you.

I splurged on this book without knowing anything about John Gierach (sacrilege?), and felt like I'd discovered America. As an inchoate fly-fisher, I found his stories so exciting that every time I sat down to read it I wanted to rush out to practice my casting in the hope that one day, I too would have stories like these to tell. I've found that many books by veteran fishermen discourage me from trying to get my waders wet--this book does the opposite (and I wonder if the author regrets this response!) Huzzah huzzah.
