Book Description

Many important questions regarding the creation and adoption of the United States Constitution remain unresolved. Did slaveholdings or financial holdings significantly influence our Founding Fathers' stance on particular clauses or rules contained in the Constitution? Was there a division of support for the Constitution related to religious beliefs or ethnicity? Were founders from less commercial areas more likely to oppose the Constitution? To Form a More Perfect Union successfully answers these questions and offers an economic explanation for the behavior of our Founding Fathers during the nation's constitutional founding. In 1913, American historian Charles A. Beard controversially argued in his book An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States that the framers and ratifiers of the Constitution were less interested in furthering democratic principles than in advancing specific economic and financial interests. Beard's thesis eventually emerged as the standard historical interpretation and remained so until the 1950s. Since then, many constitutional and historical scholars have questioned an economic interpretation of the Constitution as being too narrow or too calculating, believing the great principles and political philosophies that motivated the Founding Fathers to be worthier subjects of study. In this meticulously researched reexamination of the drafting and ratification of our nation's Constitution, Robert McGuire argues that Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, George Mason and the other Founding Fathers did act as much for economic motives as for abstract ideals. To Form a More Perfect Union offers compelling evidence showing that the economic, financial, and other interests of the founders can account for the specific design and adoption of our Constitution. This is the first book to provide modern evidence that substantiates many of the overall conclusions found in Charles Beard's An Economic Interpretation while challenging and overturning other of Beard's specific findings. To Form a More Perfect Union presents an entirely new approach to the study of the shaping of the U.S. Constitution. Through the application of economic thinking and rigorous statistical techniques, as well as the processing of vast amounts of data on the economic interests and personal characteristics of the Founding Fathers, McGuire convincingly demonstrates that an economic interpretation of the Constitution is valid. Radically challenging the prevailing views of most historians, political scientists, and legal scholars, To Form a More Perfect Union provides a wealth of new findings about the Founding Fathers' constitutional choices and sheds new light on the motivations behind the design and adoption of the United States Constitution.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling & Thorough Look at the Economic Interpretation.......2004-01-31

"In To Form a More Perfect Union, Robert A. McGuire attempts to provide the first solid modern analysis to quantify the impact of the personal economic interests of the Founding Fathers on the structure and content of the U.S. Constitution. Readers familiar with the literature in this area will immediately, and correctly, associate this book with Charles A. Beard's Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States (New York: Macmillan, [1913] 1935). In that book, Beard concludes that the delegates' personal interests shaped their behavior with respect to the drafting and the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His hypothesis was generally accepted until the 1950s, when most scholars began to question the analysis. An onslaught of counterevidence came during the 1950s and early 1960s, and today most academics believe that Beard's original interpretation was too narrow and that the general political philosophies of the Founding Fathers had greater importance in determining the nature and contents of the U.S. Constitution.

"McGuire essentially resurrects Beard's hypothesis and offers substantial evidence in favor of the view that the Founding Fathers' personal interests had a significant influence on the process of constitutional design and ratification. In light of the substantial body of empirical evidence this book provides, it is likely to bring the personal interest view back into widespread acceptance among academics. Although McGuire draws some of the analysis presented in the book from his previously published journal articles, at least half of what he offers is new and original. What makes the book so compelling is the use of today's significantly better empirical methodology to analyze data, in contrast to the techniques available during the 1950s, when the counterevidence to Beard's hypothesis was presented.

"Readers searching for a middle ground in the debate over whether personal self-interest shaped the U.S. Constitution will find refuge in this book. McGuire repeatedly makes clear that these personal interests were relevant at the margin in the Founding Fathers' decision calculus and that many other factors (such as general political philosophy) influenced these individuals' overall behavior. Among the most compelling findings: (1) personal interests played a bigger role in the specific content of the U.S. Constitution than in the document's overall design; and (2) the framers' debt holdings and slave ownership and the degree of commercialization in their local communities are significantly correlated with their observed behavior and, hence, with the content of the constitution they produced....

"One of the book's strengths is the amount of underlying background data and statistics provided. For example, McGuire includes tables that show not only each individual delegate's vote on an issue (the data used for the dependent variable), but also the predicted probability of a yes vote for that delegate from the estimated logistic regression model. As anyone who has estimated a logistic regression model knows, it is possible for these models to fit well overall but still do a poor job of predicting individual votes. Throughout the book, however, McGuire provides the evidence necessary to comfort readers worried about such potential problems. The book's main weakness is that at times it becomes rather lengthy and dull, but this aspect is simply a cost of being thorough, which is necessary in this case because of the controversial nature of the theory being tested.

"For the great number of readers who are likely to use the results of the book as a single-sentence footnote or reference in their own research, the eleven-page prologue provides all of the background and summary information necessary to make an informed citation of the work. The remaining three hundred or so pages merely fill in the sufficient details to support these conclusions. In that sense, the book reminds me somewhat of Bjorn Lomborg's Skeptical Environmentalist (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001).

"Had I been a reviewer for the book prior to its publication, the only suggestion I might have offered to improve it would have been for the author to include a fuller discussion of the debate surrounding the adequacy and structure of the document that preceded the U.S. Constitution, the Articles of Confederation.... Had McGuire presented this discussion, he would have provided a fitting framework in which to view the Founding Fathers' choices as marginal institutional changes relative to the existing constitutional order.

"To Form a More Perfect Union undoubtedly will elicit additional research in this highly debated area of constitutional research. Future research will benefit from the 122 pages of raw data and empirical results provided as appendix material. McGuire's book most likely will meet with a better initial acceptance than Beard's book received (it was banned from high school libraries in Seattle and condemned by President Taft and by the president of Beard's own university).

"One important implication of McGuire's book is that the condition of a Rawlsian `veil of ignorance,' putatively necessary to produce a `just' social contract, is not and cannot be satisfied in reality. Any constitution or social contract will be shaped by its designers' individual self-interests. Modern public-choice scholars who favor theories based on the premise of methodological individualism will find comforting reassurance as they read To Form a More Perfect Union."

        The author charts an ethical roadmap for successful management in the 21st century. The information age is about knowledge, ideas, and creativity which result in a dizzying array of external forces including globalization, new technologies and competition. The author argues that leadership and the human factor are being overlooked and that unless companies can convince employees and customers that they are going in the right direction then they will have no chance to survive.

            Book Description

            Pesticides continue to provide an important tool in integrated pest management (IPM) programmes. Hitherto IPM programmes have had a strong bias towards insect control, but farmers need to control weeds, plant pathogens and other pest problems.

            This book follows the author's successful "pesticide application methods" by relating the equipment needs to the overall pest control requirement of major crops. It outlines the pest problems against which farmers are using pesticides and focusses on the details of the application techniques they need to optimise pesticide use.

            Much attention is now being given to genetically modified crops, but these do not necessarily avoid the use of pesticides. Some are engineered to be resistant to certain herbicides, so the use of these herbicides will still require careful application in order to minimise environmental side effects. Similarly, crops engineered for resistance to certain insect pest species may remain susceptible to other pests, thus emphasising the need for crop monitoring and careful use of any chemicals to avoid disrupting biological control.

                Book Description

                Plants provide a remarkable diversity of useful products such as food, medicines, spices, pesticides, fragrances, and stimulants. For many of these products or their synthetic successors, agriculture and phytochemistry have been critical to their development. The volume brings together noted
                authorities on the subject to discuss three topics broadly related to phytochemistry and agriculture: phytochemicals in crop production, adverse effects of phytochemicals, and production of phytochemicals by field crops and tissue culture. Specific topics include new concepts in crop protection,
                development of insecticides and tritrophic interactions, toxic substances, and the use and production of tannins, Ginkgo biloba extracts, essential oils, and fats. This book will be welcomed by students and researchers of phytochemistry, plant physiology, biochemistry, and agronomy.

                      From the supplier: Fall herbicide programs can be useful in eliminating both winter annual and perennial weeds and in reducing the need for spring burndown. However, farmers must target weeds for herbicide spraying, and a spring cleanup pass might still be necessary.

                                Book Description

                                Researchers and managers of regulated river systems will find this volume useful in acquiring information for deciding an integrated management plan for regulated river operations. Rather than the ecological theory of impacts of flow regulation, emphasis has been placed on methods to predict water quality and habitat alterations, as well as techniques to mitigate impacts from various operational scenarios. Although most chapters refer to impacts of riverine impoundments, these alternatives apply to any regulated situation in which changes in water quality or flow pattern occur. The predictive modeling techniques are explained primarily from a theoretical background. However, extensive bibliographies can guide the uninitiated to specific texts and software. Where controversial techniques have been presented, alternate methods are also described. Major topic areas include water quality problems, channel modification and management, ecological modeling and management, as well as a section on perspectives for ecological management and special problems in developing nations.

                                  I wanted a book on modifying V8 engines and this is it.The author is known for his performance and racing engines.John explains which modifications are ideal but more importantly,explains why.

                                  This book is ideal for all petrol engines not just Chevy engines.The tips and techniques can be applied to any petrol engine.

                                  Plenty of photographs throughout and its a great read.Most engine builders and amateurs will enjoy this book.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Lingefelter's small block street motor primer.......2007-05-27

                                  I purchased this book when it was released in 1996. I had just finished a 355 and had it running. I learned so much more than all the magazine how-to articles I read that I had to pull the motor and change the oil pump and file-fit the rings. So much of what I read in this book made too much sense. This book was reviewed in one of the Chevy rags and the first thing mentioned was the misuse of high volume oil pumps. Every street engine buildup story seems to use a high volume pump and this guy tells us not to for a good reason. There is something to learn in every section of this book. You may even sound like you know what you're talking about on your next visit to the machine shop. John's legacy lives on. He was highly regarded in drag racing, his company is still turning out fabulous street cars, and I think he was the hot rod hero for everyman. Anyone need a high volume oil pump?

                                  If you are a fan of John, buy the book. of course he was one of the best builders ever on this planet.
                                  The book is nice written, but he don't tell you his secrets in this book.
                                  Yes it is full of What to do, NOT how to do It, little or no specifications to bring your project to a satisfying end.
                                  Most annoying is the fact, if it get's difficult his last sentence on the subject is.... get your (whatever part) to Lingenfelter
                                  and we do it for you. That's not the reason for most people to buy this book.

                                  Another book that I had high hopes for, only to be let down. I was looking for some real insider secrets from a leading engine builder. I spent 10 years in the engine rebuilding business and now do it only as a hobby. I am always on the lookout for great books on the subject. This book is not one of them. Smokey Yunick's Power Secrets is a much better buy, although it doesn't talk about fuel injection. If you are a beginner in the engine building world, then by all means read this book, then read Smokey's Power Secrets.

                                  5 out of 5 stars This is the Chevy small block book I was looking for........2005-09-27

                                  Finally, someone wrote a book for me. The book "John Lingenfelter on Modifying Small-Block Chevy Engines: High Performance Engine Building and Tuning for Street and Racing" is the book I have been looking for.
                                  In the past I have bought and read several books on this particular subject and believed them to be quite good. John Lingenfelter's version of small block rebuilding is a refreshing view and goes into detail that makes the "how and why" simple to follow and understand without over explaining. Maybe it's just that I needed a more advanced book, but, this book is the one that exceeded my expectations. I look forward to John Lingenfelter on Modifying Olds Rocket Engines.

                                  While the United States flexes its economic and military muscles around the world as the dominant global player, it may soon have company. According to the Washington Post's T.R. Reid, the nations of Europe are setting aside differences to form an entity that's gaining strength, all seemingly unbeknownst to the U.S. and its citizens. The new Europe, Reid says, "has more people, more wealth, and more trade than the United States of America," plus more leverage gained through membership in international organizations and generous foreign aid policies that reap political clout. Reid tells how European countries were willing to discontinue their individual centuries-old currencies and adopt the Euro, the monetary unit that is now a dominant force in world markets. This is noteworthy not just for exploring the considerable economic impact of the Euro, but also for what that spirit of cooperation means for every facet of Europe in the 21st century, where governments and citizens alike believe that the rewards of banding together are worth a loss in sovereignty. Reid's most compelling portrait of this trend is in the young Europeans known as "Generation E" who see themselves not as Spaniards or Czechs but simply as Europeans. To illustrate America's obliviousness to this trend, Reid tells of former GE CEO Jack Welch, who never bothered to factor European objections into a proposed multi-billion dollar merger with Honeywell, leading to the deal being torpedoed and Welch disgraced. But what is most striking in The United States of Europe is the contrast between the new Europe and the United States. The Europeans cannot match the raw military size of the U.S., but by mixing wealth with diplomacy and continental unity (helped along by antipathy toward George W. Bush's brand of Americanism), they are forming an innovative and powerful superpower. --John Moe

                                  Book Description

                                  To Americans accustomed to unilateralism abroad and social belt-tightening at home, few books could be more revelatory—or controversial—than this timely, lucid, and informative portrait of the new European Union.

                                  Now comprising 25 nations and 450 million citizens, the EU has more people, more wealth, and more votes on every international body than the United States. It eschews military force but offers guaranteed health care and free university educations. And the new “United States of Europe” is determined to be a superpower. Tracing the EU's emergence from the ruins of World War II and its influence everywhere from international courts to supermarket shelves, T. R. Reid explores the challenge it poses to American political and economic supremacy. The United States of Europe is essential reading.

                                  This is a well written book which is very enlightening. As a US citizen it is important to recognize our diminishing stature worldwide. Its time for America to take some cues from Europe to improve our standard of living, save America's middle class, and become globally competative.

The basic premise seems sound enough, but the book sounds like it was lifted from an EU pamphlet. Reid doesn't engage in analysis, he engages in pure praise without any visible criticism of the EU. Does he mean to say that the EU and its member states have absolutely no problems? That's hard to believe.

                                  Furthermore, his theory doesn't hold up when looking at the Iraq war. In fact, Reid hardly mentions this critical event except in a handful of pages in his book. If Europe is as united as he claims and sees itself as such a counter force to American power, then why did so many European states support invasion including Italy, Spain, and Denmark among others? Surely the EU would have been able to exercise influence over its members if the book's claims were true. Reid hardly even considers the event.

                                  In fact, France and Germany's prominent resistance to the war was, as is usually the case in the face of American militarism, helpless to do anything. Reid explains this by saying that Europe goes for diplomacy and deals mainly with reconstruction and nation building (the "peacekeepers"). So essentially Europe is powerless to stop military aggression, even from a close ally and instead picks up the slack after the damage is done proving that "soft power" still cannot match military might.

                                  You can get a good feel for this book's academic content by flipping to the notes/works cited section. Most scholarly books have at the least a dozen pages, often a chapter purely for citations. Reid has a total of roughly 5 sources that he used to write a 300 page book on. In other words, Reid seems to have done no academic research which would explain the poor content and analysis of this book.

                                  The underlying idea is promising, but without substantial research to confirm his claims, Reid's book is useless.

                                  4 out of 5 stars The United States of Europe is a must-read........2007-03-24

                                  The United States of Europe is an intelligent, well-written and eye-opening look at the European Union; its history, its euro, its ever growing market and political muscle. Although the book is clearly aimed at the US, Europeans will certainly benefit from reading it.

                                  T. R. Reid writes in a strong and confident style, submits names, dates and numbers with authority, and anecdotes like a belly-laughing buddy on a Saturday night over a couple of Heinekens.

                                  The United States of Europe is a must-read.

                                  5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-02-20

                                  The book is great in content, and it gives readers a sense of how contemporary Europeans think of their current union and how that will challenge United State's role as superpower in today's world. The author uses great analogies and it's a very down to earth book that anyone with a college degree can appreciate.

                                  5 out of 5 stars The Other Side of the Ocean.......2007-01-22

                                  This is a great book. Reid spells out the ascendancy of Europe from the ashes of WWII into a corporate nanny state - no politics in that statement, it just seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the Europeans.

                                  The history alone is worthwhile but Reid has several sections which should be taught in schools as Things We Should Have Paid Attention To Instead Of Our Usual Pop Culture Navel-Gazing:

                                  1. The rise of the EU as a force deliberately created as a counterbalance to American hegemony;

                                  2. The implied racism of seeing China/Japan/India ascendancy as a threat to our livelihoods while cheerfully accepting European ownership of significant elements of American commerce and standards because they're white and our Nanna (or Nanna's nanna) lived there once;

                                  3. The invasion of Iraq and the whole "Freedom Fries" and Rummy's dismissal of the "Old Europe" still resonates over there and will color American/European relations for a good long while after 43 goes back to brush-cutting;

                                  4. America arguably has the world's strongest military in some part because the Europeans choose not to compete with us, not because they couldn't. They are happy to let us pay for the carrier battle groups and 4,000 casualties in Iraq. They're only invested in Afghanistan because that's relevant to their interests;

                                  5. How the rise of the euro currency is a threat to American dominance and if it is successful in replacing the dollar as the investment of choice (and things appear to be heading that way) that will be the beginning of a possible slide into Argentina-like currency devaluation. Then we will find out that all of the yellow ribbons in the world imploring God's support of America don't amount to a whole heck of a lot vis-a-vis international currency market speculation;

                                  6. Jack Welch was a God-like figure in Corporate America, but after he met the Europeans they were the ones wearing the pants.

                                  Great powers stay great because they hunger for greatness. That sounds like an idiotic maxim from a strategic planning offsite, but it's true.

                                  The leaderships of Europe, China and India hunger for it. Do we? Read this book and form your own answer.
