Book Description
While some plants are valued and selected for their beauty, others are reviled for their apparent lack of these traits. Weeds are recognized worldwide as undesirable economic pests; however, the value of any plant is unquestionably determined by the perception of the viewer. This book looks at weeds from an ecological viewpoint, emphasizing the way in which one species interacts with others.

Book Description
This book results from a workshop at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland, where geochemists, geophysicists, and photogeologists have combined their expertise to constrain the timescales and geological processes in the evolution of Mars.
In order to achieve this goal, the ages of cratered lunar surfaces, which are dated precisely by the radiometric ages of returned samples, have been taken as a reference for the inner solar system chronology. The derived ages of cratered geological units on Mars indicate ongoing geological activity from about 4.5 Gyr ago till modern geologic time. Ancient surfaces involve primordial crustal material with strong magnetization that has remained from Mars' core formation within the first 20 Myr of the solar system, whereas other surfaces were created during major geological processing at about 3-4.5 Gyr ago, probably associated with a denser atmosphere and more fluvial environment, and also to exposures of volcanism. The youngest surfaces indicate volcanism, weathering, gullying, exhumation, and modest water release all operating within the last few 100~Myr, with the youngest detected flows at less than 10 Myr ago. Neither Earth nor Moon offers such a complete geological record.
This picture is consistent with radiometric age data of Martian meteorites which indicate that Mars has not only ancient crustal material, as represented in the ALH84001 meteorite, but at least some geologically young igneous rocks with ages of a few 100 Myr. Remote sensing of the Martian surface identifies two broad groups of igneous rock units, basaltic and andesitic, as is confirmed by in-situ chemical analyses at the Pathfinder landing site.
Based on these results, the book contains an update on the overall stratigraphic system and geologic processes of the Martian surface, and a recent review on the newest models of the Martian interior structure and on the knowledge about the history of the Martian atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Valuable Memoir of Neo-Beat Author Richard Brautigan.......1997-11-14
Keith Abbott was a friend and, as much as anyone could be, a confidant of the late neo-beat author, Richard Brautigan. This is one of surprisingly few biographical and/or critical works on this unique American writer. Lately there seems to be a mini-renaissance of interest in Brautigan's work. Internet sites, notably Jen Leibhart's, " The Brautigan Pages" will provide the interested surfer with contacts of other aficionados. This writer has received e-mail from Finland and Germany where Brautigan's work is becoming known (again?).
I know of only two other works dedicated exclusively tothis author, Terence Malley's "Richard Brautigan", a 1972 publication in Warner's "Writers for the Seventies" series and Marc Chenetier's 1983 more inclusive "Richard Brautigan".
The Abbott book is far more personal and, for thiswriter, more interesting. It is the only work that makes a serious effort at a biographical approach to this enigmatic writer.
It may be some time before Brautigan's significance as a man of letters can be agreed upon but the recent resurgence of interest suggests that he will not fall into obscurity.
By the way you can e-mail Jen Leibhart at jen@cnct.com.
So until some enterprising writer attempts a true literary biography Keith Abbott's book will fill this unjust gap in American letters.
Book Description
Monte Duttonâs Rebel With a Cause provides an inside look at emerging NASCAR superstar Tony Stewartâs 2000 racing season. Stewartâs impressive 2000 campaign has not disappointed the fans who applauded his stellar rookie year, 1999. In 2000, Stewart not only racked up impressive wins, but his fierce competitive spirit and his tell-it-like-it-is attitude have made him a fan favorite. He has made headlines with his dramatic victories but also with his occasional scraps on and off the track with Jeff Gordon and other drivers. Tony Stewart is, without a doubt, one of NASCARâs most rebellious heroes as well as one of the sportâs best young drivers.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite a "Driver #8" story about Driver #20........2002-04-30
Mr. Dutton's first book, "At Speed blah blah..." was terrible to the point where I think it should not have been published. His literary agent - whom provided a helpful review here which clarified the origins of the content of "Rebel With a Cause" - will perhaps be dismayed that I reached that conclusion after reading "At Speed..." while browsing in a bookstore and not after wasting my money on it. It might be good for kindling, but that's about it.
Mr. Dutton's effort with "Rebel" is better, though maybe not by leaps and bounds. The book recaps Stewart's sophomore year in Winston Cup, with each chapter corresponding roughly to a week at one track, and then the next track, etc. It's well written and it serves as an entertaining chronicle of Stewart's up-and-down 2000 season. That said, the emphasis is on off-track matters and how those matters affected Stewart's on track performance. Details about what was he was doing on the track during any given race are conspicuously missing, to the book's detriment.
In fact, the book is pretty dull when it comes to conveying any on-track excitement at all, and it reads much more like a columnist reporting the news. Furthermore, I'm not even sure if Mr. Dutton actually interviewed Stewart one-on-one for any part of his book. If he did, it doesn't show. While Stewart is quoted at length throughout the text, one is left with the impression that the quotes are simply lifted from Stewart's press conferences.
Even so, having Stewart's season recorded is still a treat, and what general race coverage there is is sufficient to keep the book moving. But compared to "Driver #8" which follows the same "2000 Winston Cup season, week-by-week" approach, "Rebel" unfortunately does not measure up well. This is partly because of the aforementioned lack of detail about Stewart's on-track experiences during each race, but also because Mr. Dutton simply is not Stewart. To Mr. Dutton's credit as a reporter he is objective throughout his book, but unfortunately that approach precludes the reader from developing any sense of intimacy with his subject. You might get a sense about how Stewart has been shaped by Winston Cup, but you won't feel you've gotten to know him yourself. In fact, Mr. Dutton's style is so objective that you won't even get to know HIM.
Of course, if you are Stewart fan, then Earnhardt Jr.'s book certainly can't "scratch your itch." Objectively, I think "Rebel" is a three-star book, but since I'm a Stewart fan, I've given it four. The casual fan will find a better read in "Driver #8." While the tone of this review is somewhat negative, "Rebel," despite its shortcomings, is still a good, solid book. You could do a lot worse!
Just a Recap.......2002-03-05
Im a big #20 fan and was expecting to find alot of information I never heard before. Unfortunately, this book seemed to be just a recap of the 2000 season. At times I felt I was reading old newspaper articles about the races. The very small amount of 'behind-the-scenes' stuff could have fit into 20 pages. If your a new fan or a fan of another driver this book will get you caught up with Tony's past seasons and should put the negative publicity to rest. Otherwise I would wait for Tony's book to come out but of course us diehards need to pick up everything anyway :)
Setting the record straight.......2001-12-05
As Monte Dutton's literary agent, I feel obliged to set the record straight. (...) Monte has written strictly original material; it is NOT a reprinting of items from "NASCAR This Week," syndicated by Monte's employer, The Gaston Gazette. Therefore, readers will NOT be "familiar with this material." Furthermore, Monte had no obligation to include in his comprehensive recounting of Tony Stewart's outstanding 2000 sophomore season "a coherent picture of the complex mechanics, culture and social context of racing." Gimme a break! All hard-core NASCAR fans already know this stuff. Furthermore, Monte has already covered much of this information in his first book, At Speed: Up Close and Personal with the People, Places, and Fans of NASCAR.
A must read for Stewart fans!!.......2001-07-19
This is a great book and a must read for Stewart fans...it would also be a good read for people who are critical of Stewart because it goes a long way to explaining why Tony does some of the things he does...I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Need more insight!!.......2001-07-04
I am a big Tony fan who couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. However, after reading it, I was disappointed that there wasn't more background to Tony's past (growing up, highs and lows, etc). I felt it was a basic run down of last season. Yes, there were little bits here and there but I wanted a deeper look inside to who Tony really is. I wanted to find out what makes him tick and why. I felt that I got more of a recap on last years Winston Cup season, not the inside scoop I was expecting.

Customer Reviews:
More of an ad blitz than a teach yourself rapid reading........2006-05-17
Picked this book up with an interest in increasing my reading speed, but was disappointed when the book turned out to be one big ad for the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Courses. Most of the book was devoted to informing the reader how fast and efficiently they could study, and how successful their courses are. There was very little instruction and what was there was vague. The book ended up being of negligible help to my reading speed.
Read over and over until you get it........2005-09-22
Every junior high, high school, and college student should read this book. It takes lots of practice to learn how to do it proficiently but once you've got it figured out you'll love how fast you can read and how well you can retain the information.
Nice paperweight.......2004-04-24
I read this book because it claimed to help increase reading by 50%. I thought that I was a strong reader. I read about 230 words per minute. Well, after reading this book, I read about 250 words per minute. 20 words wasn't worth it!
Skip this, get Breakthrough Rapid Reading by Peter Kump.......2004-04-22
Reading this book feels like talking to a used car salesman. Stanley Frank spends as much time in this (very thin) volume giving anecdotes on how wonderful Evelyn Wood speed reading is as he does giving any useful information about how to read faster. The book does give some rapid reading techniques, but fails to link them into a curriculum for actually training oneself to increase reading speed.
By contrast, I found Peter Kump's "Breakthrough Rapid Reading" (recommended by another Amazon Reviewer) to be quite helpful. Kump's book mixes the theory of Evelyn wood with comprehensive exercises to put these ideas into practice. Kump also gives the reader a way to record and track progress through the course.
The concepts of rapid reading are not difficult, the challenge lies in putting them into practice. Save your $7, skip Frank, and buy a book that will actually help you learn to read faster.
Shame on Amazon.......2004-01-28
Amazon as sells this book under the title "Remember Everything You Read", it is the exact same book word for word. This one is hardcover and the other is paperback. From reading the description for the one about it being adapted from "Remember Everything You Read", I thought I was getting two different books.
Unfortunately, returning it isn't worth the money.

Sherlock Holmes and the County Courthouse Caper.......2003-01-08
I lived in the area of Browns Valley for 7 years (in fact, Clinton, the town where I lived, was mentioned), and had the opportunity to tour the Sam Brown House. However, I did not know a lot of the history as laid out in the book. It is a good mixture of fact and just enough fiction to keep the history from being boring! I know Jeff and his family, in fact, they were the ones who introduced me to Browns Valley and it was fun to read something written by someone I know about a place I am so familiar with.
