Modern Industrial Organization (4th Edition) (Addison-Wesley Series in Economics)
ASIN: 0262032864 |
Book Description
Over the past twenty years, the study of industrial organization--the analysis of imperfectly competitive markets--has grown from a niche area of microeconomics to a key component of economics and of related disciplines such as finance, strategy, and marketing. This book provides an issue-driven introduction to industrial organization. It includes a vast array of examples, from both within and outside the United States. While formal in its approach, the book is written in a way that requires only basic mathematical training. Supplemental materials posted on the Web make more extensive use of algebra and calculus.
Customer Reviews:
Found it good but short.........2006-04-02
It could satisfy you if you want to have an idea of IO. I recomend to jump straight to a higher level book.
Outstanding........2000-12-13
The layout and content of this book is truly outstanding. Cabral's lucid explanations and balance of theory and examples, make this book a pleasure to read. The text also provides a much needed framework for thinking about the ambiguous term, "strategy." Several of the author's reviewers comment that this text is destined to become the definitive introductory text on the industrial organization and I support that view.
A clearly superior text.......2000-10-30
Just when you thought there was no need for another Industrial Organization textbook, L. Cabral has written a book so breathtaking lucid that it may stand as the definitive introductory textbook for a generation. The author adeptly combines classic industrial organization theory with the latest advances in research and modern examples. The result is at once current and timeless, and will surely engage the beginning student more than any book currently on the market, or any book likely to be written. A must have for any introductory industrial organization class.

Book Description
Readers will get spectacular results by following Harrington's basic principles and step-by-step plan for achieving total improvement management. First, he shows how to integrate the four competing methodologies of total technology management, total quality management, total productivity management, and total cost management. Balancing each of these factors results in solid business decisions on where to spend limited resources to ensure long-term results. Next, he puts his total improvement management (TIM) pyramid into action in 15 steps that illustrate how to: Obtain upper management commitment and participation; Construct a strong business plan; Develop a customized 3-year improvement plan out of a clear vision statement; Establish process improvement teams; Upgrade systems to prevent problems before they occur; Motivate through employee recognition programs; And more! Armed with these tools, managers will be able to coordinate the many, often conflicting, improvement efforts going on in today's organizations--thereby achieving total improvement management and renewed customer loyalty. It's a goal that American business can't afford to miss, especially in today's highly competitive global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best overall business improvement book ever.......2007-08-22
I'm wondering why this book only has one reader (now two) rating it 5 stars.
I've read scores of books about business improvement but most if not all of them focus only in one knowledge area, e.g., The Goal/Question/Metric
Method; Operational Performance Measurement: Increasing Total Productivity; Real Process Improvement Using the CMMI, and others.
I'm still on page 216 as of August 22, 2007 but I don't have to wait to finish this book to say that it's good. The author is the kind of person that leaves no doubt that he knows what he's talking about because I've experienced the same situations - positive and negative - he described in the book. For example, we had a former president who wanted us to be assessed at CMMI Level 2 because it will attract more customers. When he found out how much it would costs, CMMI suddenly slowly became history and we had to find another way to 'improve' which costs less or at no cost (Hello?). In page 187, he actually listed the reasons why organizations get certified (assessed or whatever) and my above example is #3, market advantage.
Most important of all is that he doesn't take an atomistic but rather a holistic approach to business improvement. He stressed the cliche, 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.' All the good intentions in the world like 5S can fall like a deck of cards when just one manager's desk looks like a garbage dump.
I only have one complaint though and it's about the book's reference to an article written in Wall Street about China shooting 18 factory managers and workers for shipping poor quality refrigerators. I Googled for it and it seems it was just a prank or hoax article similar to the North Korean's leader destroying the moon. I understand that this book was written in 1995 and it was probably an honest mistake to believe the article was factual. But this doesn't take away from my 5-star rating.
Making Sense out of Improvement Initiatives.......2000-09-10
Harrington does an excellent job of presenting a methodology to understand how all of those improvement 'flavors-of-the-month' can actually work TOGETHER to obtain that rosetta stone business strives for - synergy - in seeking improvement. The book is very well written, easy to understand, and will serve well as both a strategy book and a reference to keep handy when one more 'initiative' arises the next month. Well worth the money. His work makes sense out of improvement intiatives.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for the novice.......2007-07-15
I couldn't top the the 3 previous reviews, they were accurate. I have the revised 2003 book which retails for $27.99 and I bought it at a local gun shop for $25.20. I wish I had checked Amazon's prices first.
The BEST Glock book to buy.......2007-05-27
I have read all the books available for the Glock line of pistols and this one is easily the best. The author covers history, maintenance, all the models, and the pictures are excellent.
If you are going to buy just one book about Glocks I highly recommend this be the one, it IS that good.
But beware; if you are not presently a Glock owner you may find, after spending time with this book, that you just have to have one.
Sweeney's Books are the best.......2006-06-29
Pat Sweeney writes the best overall book for the firearms industry. His attention to detail and articulation is some of the best work when it comes to general firearms knowledge. The only other book that covers the Glock this well is the Ptooma Guide to the Glock. This book in comparison to the Ptooma book, well that is kind of hard. Sweeney writes as a general knowledge book, while the Ptooma book was written by guys that LOVE Glocks. Sweeney is a 1911 and revolver man, But who wouldn't trust the word of someone that took 3rd place in World Shoot XIV in Standard Revolver? I think he knows what he is talking about. You need a Glock book? Look no further. You found it.
Author should stick to writing about the 1911.......2005-11-27
My review on this one is going to be a bit more critical than most. This is probably one of the worst books on Glock pistols that I have read to date. The author is constantly comparing Glocks to 1911's, and other types of pistols. The book is also loaded with plenty of non-Glock images. Mr. Sweeney, I bought this book because I like the Glock, not because I wanted to see plenty of photos of 1911's... ad nauseam. Perhaps Mr. Sweeney should stick to books writing books like his "Gun Digest Book of the 1911", as he has done Glock more than a bit of injustice.
You know, I recently purchased Massad Ayoob's excellent book "The Gun Digest Book of Sig-Sauer". Mr. Sweeney, please take note... Massad's book on the Sig is FILLED with useful information and photos related to his book's title... SIG-SAUER PISTOLS!
Sorry, but I must recommend a pass on Sweeney's "sort of Glock" book!
Hans
Informative but lacking.......2005-09-28
I made the mistake of actually reading the book, rather than skim it or use if for reference. Mr Sweeney is an accomplished gunsmith with years of experience with the 1911 and the Glock. Although he provides a lot of good information on the Glock, it becomes obvious that he truly admires the 1911. Having another, commonly used firearm to use as a reference for comparison is a good thing. But there are many times that the 1911 comes up without benefit to the topic.
The Glock information he provides is great, albeit limited in scope; I learned a lot about magazines, other Glock models, and a holster I'd never heard of; I'm glad I have the book on my shelf for reference. Probably the most practical thing I learned is that all Glock mags of the same caliber will fit and function in other Glocks of the same caliber; consequently it makes good sense to carry a 15 round clip (from a Glock 22) to put in your concealed Glock 27 after the first 10 rounds are gone. Makes more sense than investing in a bunch of mag extensions that yield fewer total rounds.
But the book has some major drawbacks, too. At one point we are led to believe that he will cover trigger pull adjustment in another section, but this is never addressed. The writing is OK, but the editor should find a new line of work. There are contradictions, circular writing, and other mistakes that a good editor would have picked out; it was difficult to read at times. Probably the worst two issues are that it desperately needs to be updated (lots of talk about the old 1994 gun restrictions, copyright 1993) and there is no index. Tough to be a reference book without one.
I haven't read any competing books on the subject, but I can compare it with quality books written on singular subjects. That's how I formulated my rating.

Book Description
The Fifteenth Edition is available in book form, on CD-ROM for Windows, and as a subscription Web
site. The same content from The Chicago Manual of Style is in all three versions.
In the 1890s, a proofreader at the University of Chicago Press prepared a single sheet of typographic fundamentals intended as a guide for the University community. That sheet grew into a pamphlet, and the pamphlet grew into a book—the first edition of the Manual of Style, published in 1906. Now in its fifteenth edition, The Chicago Manual of Style—the essential reference for authors, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers in any field—is more comprehensive and easier to use than ever before.
Those who work with words know how dramatically publishing has changed in the past decade, with technology now informing and influencing every stage of the writing and publishing process. In creating the fifteenth edition of the Manual, Chicago's renowned editorial staff drew on direct experience of these changes, as well as on the recommendations of the Manual's first advisory board, composed of a distinguished group of scholars, authors, and professionals from a wide range of publishing and business environments.
Every aspect of coverage has been examined and brought up to date—from publishing formats to editorial style and method, from documentation of electronic sources to book design and production, and everything in between. In addition to books, the Manual now also treats journals and electronic publications. All chapters are written for the electronic age, with advice on how to prepare and edit manuscripts online, handle copyright and permissions issues raised by technology, use new methods of preparing mathematical copy, and cite electronic and online sources.
A new chapter covers American English grammar and usage, outlining the grammatical structure of English, showing how to put words and phrases together to achieve clarity, and identifying common errors. The two chapters on documentation have been reorganized and updated: the first now describes the two main systems preferred by Chicago, and the second discusses specific elements and subject matter, with examples of both systems. Coverage of design and manufacturing has been streamlined to reflect what writers and editors need to know about current procedures. And, to make it easier to search for information, each numbered paragraph throughout the Manual is now introduced by a descriptive heading.
Clear, concise, and replete with commonsense advice, The Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition, offers the wisdom of a hundred years of editorial practice while including a wealth of new topics and updated perspectives. For anyone who works with words, whether on a page or computer screen, this continues to be the one reference book you simply must have.
What's new in the Fifteenth Edition:
* Updated material throughout to reflect current style, technology, and professional practice
* Scope expanded to include journals and electronic publications
* Comprehensive new chapter on American English grammar and usage by Bryan A. Garner (author of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage)
* Updated and rewritten chapter on preparing mathematical copy
* Reorganized and updated chapters on documentation, including guidance on citing electronic sources
* Streamlined coverage of current design and production processes, with a glossary of key terms
* Descriptive headings on all numbered paragraphs for ease of reference
* New diagrams of the editing and production processes for both books and journals, keyed to chapter discussions

Buy the Book.......2007-10-09
Is a required book for a class in grad school. Really, really, really wish I would've bought the book instead. Yes, the book is big...but e-version is so difficult and frustrating to use, (and I'm fairly technical,) that I end up going to their website instead. A disappointing waste of money.
Save Your Money.......2007-07-17
The Chicago Manual of Style is a standard worth having in print. However, the electronic version is the worst electronic implementation of any book that I have ever seen. There is no excuse for that in this day and age. It makes U of C look very childish and unprofessional. In addition to the problems already mentioned, I add these:
(1) The font appears to be a fixed-size bitmap font that is just blown up by making the pixels larger to get the right size. The text on my high resolution monitor is barely legible. Unprofessional doesn't even begin to describe this.
(2) The interface is useless. By default when you start up the program the application is maximized. Most people will not want that as you can only view a section at a time which means that 95% of the screen will be wasted white space. You can double-click on the title bar and resize but the left side of the application is taken up by a table of contents and tabbed dialog with bookmarks and search results. These do not resize themselves when you resize the application, so you are basically stuck with a full screen application and fonts that are the worst I have ever seen in a fairly expensive electronic book. (3) Cosmetically there are lots of problems, like interface parts that don't line up and screen refresh problems that often cause you to have to restart the application. This was clearly thrown together by someone who had zero self respect and no concern for quality of work. Typical these days I guess. But I have never seen something this bad from a respected publisher.
Get the print edition. It is great. But avoid the electronic edition like the plague. It is a waste of good money. If zero stars was an option that is what I would give it. It is sad that a well-known book publisher is willing to put this kind of garbage out and have the nerve to actually charge more for it than the print edition. Shame on you U od C.
Nice to have the resource portable/offline, but interface needs improvement.......2007-01-13
I own the book, but as a freelance editor, I wanted something I could take on the road with me when I travel. I did the trial of the online membership, and it is nice, but not when you're sitting somewhere without internet access. The CD-ROM seemed like the perfect solution.
Unfortunately the implementation leaves much to be desired. When I first installed the software, it worked fine, but the next time I loaded it, the pane with the table of contents and search results had disappeared and I couldn't get it back. I tried reinstalling and it still didn't work, rendering the program essentially useless. I e-mailed CMS customer support and they never wrote back. Eventually about a month later I happened to check their site again and found that they had posted a CD-ROM update file (which wasn't originally up there when I first had the problem). Installing this update did fix the problem, but it would have been nice if they had responded to my e-mail.
Now the CD-ROM does basically fit my needs--I do like having that heavy reference volume in a portable format on my computer. However, the one thing that is really annoying is the searching capability. In the software, if you search for multiple words, it searches for that exact phrase in that order--it does not do an "and" search on the separate words. It gives you an option to do an advanced search on a word, which lets you do an "and," "or," or "not" search, but limits you to just two keywords--the one keyword and the modifier keyword. If you try to search by more than one word in either the search term or modifier box, it pops up an error message that says "Advanced Search does not accept phrases"! How annoying is that, to only be able to search by two single words.
When I'm online, I actually use CMS's web search interface--I like seeing the Q&A results, and I still find the online search easier to use and more comprehensive because it does a normal "and" web search by as many words as you want to enter. This makes it much easier to find what I am looking for. Then, to read an article, I go look it up by article number in the software!
Despite the annoyances, I would still recommend it to anyone who needs portable, offline access to this reference. Just be aware of the shortcomings.
Defective Software.......2007-01-11
On my computer, the InstallShield-based installation program crashes halfway through the installation process. I contacted the support staff at the University of Chicago Press. They asked for information about my computer and said they were working on the problem. After weeks of waiting, I was finally informed that the software is simply defective and given an address where I could send the CD for a refund. Very disappointing.
Tastes great--less filling.......2006-12-03
Like the other 2 reviewers, I agree it would be better to see whole pages of the book at a time (I suppose I'd really rate it 4 1/2 stars). But does that flaw make the product a flop? Heck no! Not only can you do searches, but when you click on an item in the index and read the page you're sent to, you can get right back to the same entry in the index. That sure beats flipping around in the (heavy) printed volume. And if you take your laptop to the coffee shop to do your work, like I do, you'll appreciate having your CMS along without the added weight.
I found the interface very intuitive. Three features that will be quite useful are bookmarking, notes, and highlighting. It's nice to be able to "mark up" my CMS without actually writing in a book.

Very helpful and complete.......2005-10-11
This has been an incredibly helpful chapter for me while compiling the index of my nonfiction book. The information is thorough, easy to understand, and well-indexed in itself.
While I think it would be nice to have this chapter bound by itself, you might consider just buying the entire Chicago Manual of Style, as it's full of other helpful non-index-related information that may be valuable to you as a writer.
