We are used to thinking about inequality within countries--about rich Americans versus poor Americans, for instance. But what about inequality between all citizens of the world? Worlds Apart addresses just how to measure global inequality among individuals, and shows that inequality is shaped by complex forces often working in different directions. Branko Milanovic, a top World Bank economist, analyzes income distribution worldwide using, for the first time, household survey data from more than 100 countries. He evenhandedly explains the main approaches to the problem, offers a more accurate way of measuring inequality among individuals, and discusses the relevant policies of first-world countries and nongovernmental organizations.
Inequality has increased between nations over the last half century (richer countries have generally grown faster than poorer countries). And yet the two most populous nations, China and India, have also grown fast. But over the past two decades inequality within countries has increased. As complex as reconciling these three data trends may be, it is clear: the inequality between the world's individuals is staggering. At the turn of the twenty-first century, the richest 5 percent of people receive one-third of total global income, as much as the poorest 80 percent. While a few poor countries are catching up with the rich world, the differences between the richest and poorest individuals around the globe are huge and likely growing.

Seymour and Girardet's book is a good beginning place for people who want to learn more about environmental problems and how they can tread less lightly upon the Earth. The text is clearly written at a level the average person can understand and a large number of drawings illustrate well the various systems and cycles they discuss. One of my favorites is the four-page spread (58-61) showing how food gets from the farm to our tables. One suspects that if more people followed the book's Six Principles for Good Housekeeping (18), the world would be in much better shape.
Readers must read critically, however. Several times I found the authors overstating their case. One wonders, for example, if more widespread paper recycling programs would really make this industry, "hugely profitable, and the scourge of paper litter would vanish." (90) I was simiarly skeptical of their discussion of the Borana tribe, a people who "live almost entirely on milk--with a little meat from time to time" but do not suffer from heart disease usually associated with a high fat diet. (70-1). These and similar exaggerations, perhaps made with best intentions, are dangerous ammunition for opponents who wish to discredit environmentalists.

Fun and New.......2007-07-19
Scott's book is an excellent benchside companion. I really enjoyed the easy to follow step by step instruction. I would consider myself an avid tier and I found this book to be one of best that I've come across for trout patterns. Scott gives some great commentary related to each fly on how to fish and what it represents and then follows that up with some great photos. I know there are a lot of books out there, and I've bought or looked through a bunch...but this book happens to be my favorite to date. I have great hope in that Barr's new book will be as good as Scott's. And I can't wait for Scott to write another book.

So much that's out there purporting to be 'new' in fly fishing and tying is nothing more than gross plagiarism or rehashing. Scott's book is a breath of fresh air, and one of only a very few books that reveal what's truly going on now at the forefront of western fly fishing. Chez has arisen from a guide and fly shop clerk to one of the most innovative tiers in the Rockies. He excels at utilizing synthetic material in new ways as exemplified by his `Midge X'. Scott's knowledge of aquatic entomology is formidable, and his writing on the subject is, with a few small exceptions, accurate. His writing style does tend towards funky in spots. At times refers to himself as "a 7 weight junkie, a glue junky, a synthetic junkie, etc. But all in all it doesn't detract from the book. You know you are reading the words of an angler, not an egocentric armchair wannna be writing for one of the many unbearable glossy fly fishing magazines. His fly's work. I have used them in rivers near my Wyoming home, in Alberta, B.C., Russia, and Alaska. Buy this book even if you don't tie. It contains plenty of usefull ancillary information about hatches and technique.

A good reminder when tensions flare.......2006-07-06
This book does a good job of addressing common marital (or co-habitation) problems in an objective way. It's a good reminder of how to fight fair and to think of things from your partner's perspective, something that often gets lost in the heat of battle. It doesn't really tell you anything you don't already know (or should know), but if you can remember some of the points and try to implement them regularly so that they become second-nature, it can make those annoying habits of others -- and yourself! -- more bearable. If you've tried to convince your partner that manners are important even (or especially) when it's just the two of you, reading excerpts of this book to him or her may help. It's very balanced, as far as the male vs. female perspective goes, and doesn't approach conflict as if one sex is always right. That objectivity improves its credibility.
It's About Time Someone Wrote a Book Like This.......2006-01-09
What's the etiquette for sex, dividing the chores, snoring, where to go for the holidays, sleeping on the couch, getting along with the spouse's friends?
The author reminds us that actions, appearance and words greatly affect our relationships. The recommendations he makes may seem at times to be obvious, but too often couples forget to base their own actions on "consideration, respect and honesty." He lists "Etiquette Imperatives" that cover the not-to-be-ignored basics for couples.
Peter Post is the great-grandson of Emily Post and he wrote Essential Manners for Men plus monthly etiquette columns.

A revelation for some men.......2005-12-24
I enjoyed this book. I agree with C Clark that it is indeed a book that men should read. A lot of what is in the book is just common sense courtesy and manners in a relationship. However, many people(mostly former single men) will want to be reminded of how to act in a relationship in order to be beloved by your girlfriend or wife and her friends and family. Peter Post is quite funny and he continues the Post tradition in providing etiquette lessons for us all.
Buy it for your brother. Now........2005-11-17
To a woman, much of the content of this book seems fundamental. But you know those stories you tell your friends about something insensitive your boyfriend did? Something that seems so obviously clueless to you and your gal pals? This book can help. I think that for men relationship etiquette doesn't always come naturally, and words of guidance from America's premiere etiquette authority can really help. Good luck!

I'm a 17 year-old girl, just like Pevsner's character, Darien, and it's as if Pevsner wrote this book after my life! I recommend this book to everyone, particularly girls who smile when they recall their first love.
