A Better Globalization: Legitimacy, Governance, and Reform

The huge costs of armed conflict, the great challenge of state failure, and the slow pace of international actions to address world poverty all point to weaknesses in the global institutional framework and the need for much more effective international cooperation. In this book, Kemal Dervis argues that it is time to build a new international governance structure, breaking away from a system that reflects the post World War II world toward one that is appropriate to the realities and requirements of the 21st century. He proposes a reform of the international institutional architecture based on high-level governance in both the political and economic domains by a renewed and modernized United Nations. Navigating between careful realism and bold idealism, he formulates a coherent vision encompassing both institutional reform and new ideas for policies supported by the specialized institutions such as the IMF, the World Bank, the WTO, the UN agencies themselves, and regional institutions such as the regional development banks.

In this plea for "better" globalization, Dervis proposes that, under the legitimizing umbrella of the UN, the specialized institutions deal with the deep causes of the obstacles to poverty reduction and instability rather than their immediate manifestations. He recognizes the great potential that more and freer trade can have for accelerating growth throughout the world. He also stresses, however, that for this potential to be unleashed, the hearts and minds of people must be won by transforming not only the WTO framework but the entire governance of the international economic system into something that is perceived as more legitimate and more responsive to the concerns of the developing world as well as wealthy and creditor nations.

Filled with Prose and Science.......2003-04-04

The book is written in a rhyming prose format. It depicts the life work of Mr. Halley, not merely the work on the comet named after him. It is filled with all kinds of science references. It is most appropriate for upper-elementary school children. While the pictures and prose would work well for the younger grades, the science contained in the book is most appropriate for the older kids.

The book was not in off-the-shelf condition and arrived with multiple markings and small stains on the cover. The book did not appear new when compared to other items from the same date ordered. The lesson-buy right away after publication and avoid these isues. Otherwise, the order was fulfilled as promised. Go Horns!

From the review I thought this would be a great book to have, but I find it lacking and thin. Many of the suggestion were repeated [...]. I thought this book is more about ideas of words to write, and indeed it has some, but not a lot to choose from.

Not what I expected.......2002-12-20

I bought this book thinking it would help with my holiday letter writing and a letter I wished to write for a friend who recently married. I was very disappointed in the sparse selection of sample letters and the overabundance of poems and gift ideas. It's not something I'll reach for often.

You NEED this book . ........2002-11-01

Spizman's book of useful tips, hints and resources for anyone who aspires to BE the kind of person who cares and does something about it is really wonderful. I already think I do a pretty good job saying kind and encouraging things to others. This book really gives me ideas and encouragement for doing it. I plan to give copies of this book to many friends. A great and useful resource. Also, her daughter's book, The Thank You Book for Kids is a terrific how to book for young people.

Even good writers have an off day!.......2007-01-04

I have read just about every one of Mick Foley's other works and have found him to be not only an entertainer in the squared circle, but a thoroughly engrossing storyteller with a great characterization of whatever personalities who places in his book, whether fictional or non-fictional. However, even though yes, I do understand that this is a child's book, it still fell a little flat. These are heroes that kids may look up to in the wrestling ring, and I did not feel that the average child would be able to relate to them drawn as children. I also did not feel the amount of time or care put into it as in his other books. Unfortunately it felt as if it were rushed together to meet a deadline. Sorry Mick!

Fun book for 20 year old kids.......2005-09-05

As a 24 year old I am not to hip with the kiddie book scene, but I found this book a lot of fun and one that I would happily read to my nephews. Foley, as will as his illustrator Thompson do a great job of putting tons of wrestling history in it while at the same time making it fun for people who know nothing about it. I would tell anyone to read this book for a quick chuckle.

Fantastic!.......2005-06-13

I found this an awesome book, great for kids young and old. It is very easy for children to read, and a favourite among those little wrestling fans. I think Mick Foley did a great job with this book, and I look forward to seeing more. The only downsides are that the story lines are old, the stories too short, and the book needs more characters, for example there were some pictures of wrestlers on the book, that didn't actually appear in the stories. Overall I highly reccomend it, it's worth the money.

Worse than Madonna's Childrens Book........2004-12-14

What a joke this book is. Not funny, ha ha, but funny as in, how disgraceful. Mick Foley, the evolution between Hacksaw Jim Duggen and Eugene, has done many unbelievable things in his wrestling career. While I loved his book, "Blood and sweatsocks" his latest biography, which is "Foley is Good" and "Wrescal Lane" have not done it for me. You can be on New York Times Bestseller List all you want, but it doesn't make you a good author.

This book especially is downright stupid. I understand it's supposed to be for kids, but even my kids looked at it and thought, "Jeez, this is horrible."

Mick Foley keeps coming to wrestling shows promoting his stupid books and wasting time between matches. I wish Vince McMahon would just tell this loser to take a hike, but since Mick's books are published by WWE, I feel that we don't have a choice.

Boy, TNA Impact is looking better and better everyday. You don't see Jeff Jarrett promoting a book, do ya? No, he sticks to what he best at, wrestling.

Don't buy this book.

Good for what it is........2004-11-23

I have to say that I really enjoy Mick Foley's children books. I have gotten both the Halloween and the Christmas books and have made reading these books an annual holiday tradition. These books are whimsical and above all try to teach a moral lesson. One thing that does need to be addressed is the need to continue to bring these books up to date as the WWE roster changes. Wrestling fans have short memory so characters like Stephanie McMahon and the Rock seem to fade from memory. When reading to the children, they want to hear about Chris Beniot and Eddie Guerrerro, JBL and Booker T. In another year, it will be a whole new group.

In Summary, a fun read, especially to the children. Each book has a moral and the kids seem to love them. This book was no exception.
