Book Description
A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation is unique in its clear descriptions of the most commonly used nonmarket valuation techniques and their implementation. Individuals working for government agencies, attorneys involved with natural resource damage assessments, graduate students, and others will appreciate the non-technical and practical tone of this book.
The first section of the book provides the context and theoretical foundation of nonmarket valuation, along with practical data issues.
The middle two sections of the
Primer describe the major stated and revealed nonmarket valuation techniques. For each technique, the steps involved in implementation are laid out and described. Both practitioners of nonmarket valuation and those who are new to the field will come away from these methods chapters with a thorough understanding of how to design, implement, and analyze a nonmarket valuation study.
The concluding section takes stock of the usefulness of nonmarket valuation, highlighting chapters on benefit transfer, the role of nonmarket valuation in real decisions about natural resources, and where nonmarket valuation is headed in the future.
As a companion to
A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation, a website has been developed, http://www.fs.fed.us/nonmarketprimerdata/. This website includes downloadable datasets for each of the techniques described in the
Primer, as well as links to published journal articles and reports based on the data. The website also provides an opportunity for students to estimate models using the data.

Book Description
This book from Meredith Belbin, the UK's leading expert on teams, takes the reader on a different and fascinating journey. His insightful analysis takes us from the faults of typical hierarchies to the new world of restructured, flatter organizations where new sets of problems are emerging.
In the search for alternative systems, Belbin outlines ways in which continuous deployment and career development can result in more effective use of people's talents. He describes the world of the higher social insects where evolution has generated a common set of principles governing organizations at their most advanced. He then suggests that these integrated strengths could be combined effectively with the strategic abilities of humans.
A model in the form of the helix, is foreseen in which individuals and teams move forward on the basis of excellence rather than function. Here information technology can assist in the evolution of human organizations to enable them to become both more complex and more viable in the future.

The coming shape of organizations..... AND TEAMS.......2005-12-01
Belbin sees Biologically-based teams as the next step
Dr R Meredith Belbin, regarded as the father of "team-role" theory and one of the worlds foremost experts on teams predicts that we will evolve into bioteam forms.
Specifically he suggests our organisations will evolve into those forms "which combine the devolved but integrated strengths of the higher insects with the directive and strategic abilities of humans".
In his book "The Coming Shape of Organisation" [1] he picks out five observations human teams need to learn from "a diminutive masterclass" of social insects such as bees, ants and termites:
Five Observations
=================
1. Division of Labour
They have no overall single leader but rather a co-operating leadership caste.
2. Superior use of Intelligence
Social insects are superior to humans in their ability to rapidly integrate new information from a wide range of senses and share it widely to ensure urgent action happens immediately rather than passing it up and down hierarchical chains of command.
3. Flexibility of Member Castes
Social insect colonies consist of a number of distinct castes of insects playing specialised roles such as foragers, attackers and nest maintainers. However these castes are are flexible and grow and shrink as required and can even change their roles in a crisis.
4. Devolved decision making
The system is geared up to concurrent (as opposed to sequential) decision making - there is no chain of command to slow decisions down.
5. Redundancy and Contingency
Colonies are not dependent on a single individual or system. They are based on scale and interlocking systems - any one of which might fail without catastrophic consequences for the colony.
Two Immediate priorities for Teams
==================================
He goes on to identify two guidelines which he suggests seem worth transferring immediately to human affairs:
a. transferring major decision making away from a single boss (Mr Big) to a co-operating leadership group
b. replacing monolothic organisational processes with concurrent interlinked systems
A call to humility!
==================
In a statement which seems to lay down a challenge to humility in our thinking about teams Belbin concludes that "evolution will almost inevitably take us in the direction of species that have arrived at superior forms of organisation before us".
I wonder who he means?

Book Description
Donald D. Clayton's Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis remains the standard work on the subject, a popular textbook for students in astronomy and astrophysics and a rich sourcebook for researchers. The basic principles of physics as they apply to the origin and evolution of stars and physical processes of the stellar interior are thoroughly and systematically set out. Clayton's new preface, which includes commentary and selected references to the recent literature, reviews the most important research carried out since the book's original publication in 1968.

Just perfect!.......2003-01-23
A standard introductory textbook of nuclear astrophysics written by a real expert in a superb style. It has taught nuclear astrophysics to most of us and will teach many more. I keep refering to it all the time. It is my favorite. I warmly recommend it.
A standard reference on stellar structure and evolution.......2000-05-04
"Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis" is a standard work on stellar structure and evolution. It is clearly written and approachable even by a senior undergraduate. It is a "must" for anyone seriously interested in stellar astrophysics.
Please create an audio adaptation ..........1999-06-02
To the publisher I would appreciate it if the publisher could produce an audio adaptation of this book. I would love to listen to this while I drive to work and to let my 16 month old son listen to it as a bedtime story. Arnold D Veness

Customer Reviews:
Great book, but isn't for all runners.......2006-12-27
This is yet another fantastic book in the "Idiot's Guides" series. Like all other Idiot's Guides, the book is written is a user-friendly style and format. Neatly divided into five parts, this book describes what running is, where and when to run, reasons for running, running apparel and equipment, injuries, training tips, and a lot more. Bill Rodgers, who himself was a runner who won the Boston Marathon multiple times, did a fairly great job presenting the sport of running. The tips that are given in this book are invaluable for runners.
However, this book is by no means an all-inclusive guide to endurance running. This book tends to be aimed towards amateur road racers and novice runners and not so much for track athletes, high school cross-country runners, or experienced competitive runners who are looking for advanced racing strategy tips. Also, this book is not for people who are running because they want to burn a specific amount of calories for weight loss. If you are a serious, competitive runner looking for some serious coaching tips, The Competitive Runner's Handbook might be better for you. Overall, Bill Rodgers has intended this book to be a book on amateur running in general. If you want to sprint, or if you want to be top 10 in a college cross-country invitational, something else might do the job better.
This book turned out to be very useful.......2006-03-23
I've been an endurance trial runner for many years but after a stress-related leg injury took me off the circuit a friend of mine bought this book for me as a joke. Common sense may be a luxury but at least we can buy it in the nearest bookstore. Technique was my problem...and probably shoes too. And I laughed while a learned. The marathon veteran that wrote the book gives a few antidotes as to the progression of Runner culture through the decades. (I'm so happy we runners have gotten past the leotard, spandex-wearing, hairy, shirtless Mr. America jogger years) I'm happy to report that I've been back in the woods and running my normal pace for a month now after Way Too Long Off. This book was very helpful in my recovery.
I May be an Idiot but this Book is About Running.......2004-06-11
Wow, I was laid flat when I opened up this book. These pages are really serious about running. And they haven't returned yet.

Customer Reviews:
A nice approach to running and jogging and how to make the most of it.......2007-03-25
Although the book title may sound a little condescending, the text and all information in the book is well written, informative and helpful. Bill Rodgers comes across as friendly and funny and offers a no nonsense approach to great fitness techniques. If you are currently idle and want to start running or jogging (they are both virtually the same, by the way) or you are already at a certain fitness level, this book will help you in different ways.
I had been running for about 2 years at 6 miles a week and thought I had a solid routine. I'd never read any books on fitness or working out or anything so I decided to pick up The Complete Idiots Guide to Jogging and Running to see what I'd been missing. After reading this book and employing some things I'd learned from it, I now run 15 miles a week and I might even add more distance to my daily running in the future.
As far as beginning and distance running, the whole spectrum is covered in the book. It first shows a 4 week program that starts with walking and builds up to a climax of running non-stop for a 30 minute time period at the end of the 4 weeks. You can stop there or continue on to get information about racing too. There are chapters that will explain strength training and techniques used to prepare for 5k , 8k and 10k races (8 week training schedules), half-marathons (10 week training schedules), and marathons (12 week training schedules).
Another great thing about the book is all the additional chapters that will enhance your total running experience. These include such topics as best times and places to run, how to select the best running shoes and running apparel, proper stretching methods along with cross-training ideas, dietary recommendations for your fitness program, and coping with injuries and recovery from them. And if that isn't enough, there is also a chapter dedicated exclusively to women pointing out differences between male and female running and also running effectively in different types of weather conditions.
For what is offered and for such a nice price, The Complete Idiots Guide to Jogging and Running is an excellent choice for people of all ages and types who just want to be healthy and have fun doing it. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
A little condescending..........2005-09-01
Lots of useful information, but the author is a little too experienced in marathons and distance-running to be giving advice to beginners. For example, he uses phrases like "only one mile" to talk about runners who, in his words, don't put much effort into their runs. Meanwhile, for me, one mile would be a huge accomplishment, as it would be for anyone who's never ran before (which is who the book purports to be for). It seemed like the author finds runs of less than 30 minutes to be pointless or easy, which of course it is for him, but for novices there should be more encouragement to run any distance that they can.
this programme works!.......2005-01-24
I could not run (very slowly, more a jog) for one minute then got this book. It has a four week programme designed to get you running for 30 minutes in that time span and it works. Now I'm doing the programme again to encourage my husband and I'm running even faster this time. Buy it and try it. It works.
I want a book that will give me directions, not run-arounds.......2003-09-02
This is a book for total beginners.
However, I'm just [mad] that the book is too broad. To every question, the answer is always "well, it depends on...".
I want a clear cut answer, not run arounds. That was a waste of moola.
LOVE this book!.......2001-11-20
It's the first REAL running book for REAL beginners. They don't expect you to eventually run a marathon or race like the wind, but just run for the sheer heck of it. (What a unique perspective among running books!)
The authors address many issues such as the idea you'll ruin your knees, or working out a lower heart rate to burn more fat, and the book is loaded with sound, easy-to-follow advice, information, and motivation.
And they know what a TRUE "beginner" is. I hate books that think 'starting out' means 'run for 30 minutes and work your way up' or that say to walk for a couple of months first. (If I wanted that, I'd buy a book on walking, not running.) The authors offer a realistic, progressive plan for running. Probably the only thing is that the suggested progession plan might be too fast for some, depending on your current fitness level.
The book is practical and sensible, and well-worth the investment.

Customer Reviews:
Something every rockhound needs!!.......2007-03-08
This is a great book... it has not let me down yet! It is an absolute essential for anyone interested in rocks, minerals, gemstones, and the earth in general.
Great reference to have on your desk!.......2006-03-18
To all working geologists!
You should all have this on your desks! I used it to study for the ASBOG exam and have since found it invaluable in my working life. It has all the odd and obscure geological terms that we all have heard in college but have since forgotten.
Its a great reference!
An indispensible resource.......2004-12-03
There is no way I could have survived 4 years of college level geology without this text. This is a must have book for the student of the geological sciences.
A handy review in reading treatises.......2003-09-13
As scientific dictionaries go, this one is fairly complete. Good coverage is afforded esoteric terms. Somehow, I have the feeling, though, that the book is more attuned to rockhounds than it is to professional geologists. The book lacks diagrams or photos. In a good many instances, this would afford a newcomer a bettle handle on the term being defined.
For all of this, it is a handy guide when looking at particular rocks or strata, but its real virtue lies in being at the student's hand when attempting to unwind a treatise confounded by excessive verbiage.
good basic dictionary.......2003-06-17
This is a good basic dictionary. It's not meant to be comprehensive, but covers the basics quite well. It was a required text in my undergraduate studies, and it serves nicely at that level.

Book Description
The first retrospective of one of the defining visual stylists of the 1950s. Vintage music buffs have long been bedazzled by bizarre, cartoonish album covers tagged with the signature "Flora." In the 1940s and '50s, James (Jim) Flora designed dozens of diabolic cover illustrations, many for Columbia and RCA Victor jazz artists. His designs pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins, who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns. In the background, geometric doo-dads floated willy-nilly like a kindergarten toy room gone anti-gravitational. He wreaked havoc with the laws of physics, conjuring up flying musicians, levitating instruments, and wobbly dimensional perspectives. Yet Flora's wondrous, childlike exuberance was subverted by a sinister tinge of the grotesque. As Flora confessed in a 1998 interview, "I got away with murder, didn't I?"
This is the first collection of the marvelous, mischievous album art of Jim Flora (1914-1998). The book contains most of Flora's known covers (around 50), which command high prices on eBay. The gallery includes rarely seen illustrations and covers from Columbia's new release monthly, "Coda" (1943-1953), and some of Flora's post-WWII commercial magazine work.
The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora also presents the first reprinting of Flora's fabled Little Man Press work (1939-1942). LMP was a small publishing imprint started by literary nutjob Robert Lowry, who recruited Flora as his graphic co-conspirator. Their LMP editions were printed at home in small runs of 125 to 400 copies. These books served as artistic rites of exorcism for Flora, as the budding illustrator's images veered from childish whimsy to disturbing freakishness.
The book encapsulates Flora's life with a biographical profile, interviews, photos, autobiographical reminiscences, and tributes from Alex Steinweiss, Gene Deitch, Shag, R.O. Blechman, Tim Biskup, and others who knew Jim and/or were influenced by him.
Customer Reviews:
Popped my eyes out!.......2004-12-02
This book is a terrific introduction and overview of the beautiful, grotesque, familiar and yet shockingly fresh work of Jim Flora. It's pure eye candy, Flora's limited color palette illustrations are brilliantly reproduced in large scale. Essays by Irwin Chusid and others are both witty and informative. You'll come away from this book inspired and giddy.
Historical and Artistic Necessity.......2004-11-30
Full Disclosure: I am Art Director for the publisher, although this book was completed before I arrived. That said, this is an incredible and much-needed look into the work of one of the artists that defined the concept of record cover art. A darkly fanciful artist with explosive vision, Flora worked alongside Alex Steinweiss to conceive of what album art should be. There is no way to overstate how important his work is (then and now) and what a shame it is that it took so long to give him his due. Less restrained-in fact, more exuberant-than the revered Blue Note covers, Flora's art put a different face on jazz and classical. One just as accurate but with uninhibited joy in a shadowy world. If you enjoy the likes of the modern low-brow masters (most notably Tim Biskup) you must own this. If you want history on record cover art (which is painfully lacking on the bookshelves), you want an inspiring coffeetable read, or just want to look all hipper-than-thou, then buy it. Fantagraphics has made a beautiful collection in this book.
