Asset Building and Community Development
Gary Paul Green , and Anna Haines Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0761922636 |
Book Description
"This is a very hands-on book, rich with both information and examples . . . what makes the volume especially readable is the insertion of brief case studies into most chapters . . . a productive read for both students of community development and the general public."
--Deborah Puntenney, AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL
Can residents work together to improve the quality of life in their communities? There is continued skepticism about community-based efforts to overcome the problems of concentrated poverty and racial segregation in the inner city, underdevelopment in rural areas, and social isolation. Yet, there are numerous examples of residents helping their local communities provide affordable housing, job training, and financing for businesses.
In Asset Building and Community Development Gary Paul Green and Anna Haines provide an engaging, thought-provoking, interdisciplinary overview of the community development field. They explore the history of the community development movement in the United States and in international settings. Using an asset-based approach that considers human, physical, social, financial, and environmental capital, the authors skillfully demonstrate how local organizations are better able to meet community needs than governmental programs or market strategies.
Lively and informative, this well-crafted introduction to community development will appeal to students and to practitioners who want an understanding of the basic concepts and theories behind their activities.

Developmental Assets and Asset-Building Communities: Implications for Research, Policy, and Practice (The Search Institute Series on Developmentally Attentive Community and Society)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0306474824 |
Book Description
Introduced by the Search Institute in 1990, the framework of "developmental assets" is a set of social and psychological strengths that function to enhance health outcomes for children and adolescents. Since that time, research and application associated with the concept of developmental assets has been integrated with the fields of community change and community building: -to help understand the developmental experiences, resources, and opportunities that contributes to important health outcomes among young people; and -to energize and guide community-based approaches to strengthen the natural and inherent socialization capacity of communities in support of youth. Developmental Assets and Asset-Building Communities examines the relationships of developmental assets to other approaches and bodies of work. It raises challenges about the asset-building approach and offers recommendations for how this approach can be strengthened and broadened in impact and research. In doing so, this book extends the scholarly base for the understanding of the character and scope of the systemic relation between young people's healthy development and the nature of developmentally attentive communities. The chapters in this volume present evidence that asset-building communities both promote and are promoted by positive youth development, a bi-directional, systemic linkage that - consistent with developmental systems theory - further civil society by building relationship and intergenerational places within a community that are united in attending to the developmental needs of children and adolescents. This book is a valuable resource for developmental psychologists, child psychologists, school and community psychologists, practitioners, administrators and policy-makers.

Building Assets, Building Credit: Creating Wealth in Low-income Communities (James a. Johnson Metro Series)
Manufacturer: Brookings Institution Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0815774095 |
Product Description
Today, more low-income Americans have greater access to credit than ever before, thanks in large part to the growth of global capital markets and liberal use of credit scores. But not all have benefited equally from the opened spigots. Some are overpaying for mortgage credit, others are getting in over their heads, and some have become the victims of predatory lenders. In this volume, noted analysts examine how low-income families can continue to participate in the American dream of homeownership, building up assets and equity along the way, and what businesses and government can do to ensure that low-income families succeed in homeownership.

Bringing Buildings Back: From Abandoned Properties to Community Assets: A Guidebbok For Policymakers and Practitioners
Alan Mallach Manufacturer: National Housing Institute ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0813538750 |
Book Description
Abandoned properties are a plague across the United States, from rust belt cities like Detroit and Buffalo to small towns like Lima, Ohio, and Waterloo, Iowa. Even in Sunbelt cities such as Houston and Las Vegas, abandonment is a major problem, as investment flows to the periphery, leaving the older, inner neighborhoods behind. In Bringing Buildings Back, Alan Mallach provides policymakers and practitioners with the first in-depth guide to understanding and dealing with the many ramifications that this issue holds for the future of our older cities.Combining practical suggestions with a thoughtful exploration of policy, Mallach pulls together insights from law, economics, planning, and design to address all sides of the problem, from how abandonment can be prevented to how best to bring these properties back into productive reuse. Focusing on the need for sustainable reuse and revitalization of America's cities and neighborhoods, Bringing Buildings Back shows how finding solutions for individual buildings can and must be tied to the larger process of making our cities economically stronger and environmentally sounder places to live and work. The book is replete with examples of how cities, community development corporations, and others have come up with creative, effective solutions.
Written by a distinguished urban planner and practitioner with three decades of experience, Bringing Buildings Back provides both a detailed toolkit and a call to rethink the way America carries out urban redevelopment. It is a book that should be on the desk of every mayor, city planner, community developer, or neighborhood activist, and used in every course on urban redevelopment or neighborhood revitalization.

Wheelock's Latin, 6e
Frederic M. Wheelock , and Richard A. LaFleur Manufacturer: Collins ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060956410 |
Book Description
When Professor Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin first appeared in 1956, the reviews extolled its thoroughness, organization, and conciseness; at least on reviewer predicted that the book "might well become the standard text" for introducing students to elementary Latin. Now, more than four decades later, that prediction has certainly proved accurate.
The sixth edition of Wheelock's Latin has all the features that have made it the bestselling single-volume beginning Latin textbook, many of them revised and expanded:
Also new to the sixth edition are maps of the Mediterranean, Italy, and the Aegean area, as well as numerous photographs illustrating aspoects of classical culture, mythology, and historical and literary figures presented in the chapter readings.
