Book Description

Why isn't the whole world as rich as the United States? Conventional views holds that differences in the share of output invested by countries account for this disparity. Not so, say Stephen Parente and Edward Prescott. In Barriers to Riches, Parente and Prescott argue that differences in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) explain this phenomenon. These differences exist because some countries erect barriers to the efficient use of readily available technology. The purpose of these barriers is to protect industry insiders with vested interests in current production processes from outside competition. Were this protection stopped, rapid TFP growth would follow in the poor countries, and the whole world would soon be rich.

Barriers to Riches reflects a decade of research by the authors on this question. Like other books on the subject, it makes use of historical examples and industry studies to illuminate potential explanations for income differences. Unlike these other books, however, it uses aggregate data and general equilibrium models to evaluate the plausibility of alternative explanations. The result of this approach is the most complete and coherent treatment of the subject to date.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Debug the Myths of Poor Countries.......2007-07-24

Parente and Prescott use simple language to explain the cause of the large income difference between developing countries and developed countries. In daily medias like TV and propaganda, the difference is attributed to exploitation of the rich countries on poor countries. Also these exploitation will capture the little accumulated capital in poor countries that is the fuel of their economics growth. But Parente and Prescott use both data and economics theory to show that the true cause of poverty in developing countries is government granted "MONOPLY". If the developing countries still think that they need to protect their existing industries by Monopoly so that their workers can receive more. They are actually cutting the income of the workers in future. I highly recommend all those people who want to help the poor in developing countries to read this book so that they learn the correct way to help the poor.

          Description:
A permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for remediation of coal spoil heap drainage in Northumberland, UK, is described. The drainage has typical chemical characteristics of pH <4, [acidity]>1400mg/L as CaCO"3, [Fe]>300mg/L, [Mn]>165mg/L, [Al]>100mg/L and [SO"4]>6500mg/L. During 2years of operation the PRB has typically removed 50% of the iron and 40% of the sulphate from this subsurface spoil drainage. Bacterial sulphate reduction appears to be a key process of this remediation. Treatment of the effluent from the PRB results in further attenuation; overall reductions in iron and sulphate concentrations are 95% and 67% respectively, and acidity concentration is reduced by an order of magnitude. The mechanisms of attenuation of these, and other, contaminants in the drainage are discussed. Future research and operational objectives for this novel, low-cost, treatment system are also outlined.

            Description:
Radiocesium vertical profiles in organics-rich sediments of running shallow eutrophic Lake Juodis (Lithuania) were studied in relation to seasonal variations of vertical profiles (in water column and sediments) of standard variables (pH, redox potential, temperature, oxygen concentrations, conductivity). It is shown that the sedimentation rate, radiocesium mobility and its vertical profiles in sediments are controlled by the vital cycle (processes of the growth, accumulation and decomposition) of green algae covering the main bottom areas of the lake. It is also shown that calcite deposits are formed in the shallow bottom areas that are oxygenated throughout the year because of the photosynthetic activity of the green algae covering the sediment. Formation of the calcite coatings on freshly accumulated organics is remarkable for causing elevated densities of sediment solids in the upper part of the respective vertical profiles. These calcite deposits behave as a barrier for radiocesium backward flux to the bottom water making the respective bottom areas a radionuclide sink. Together with the jelly-structured sediments lying below these deposits, the calcite preserves the shape of the primary radiocesium vertical profiles formed due to free-ion diffusion after the deposition event. It was determined that bottom areas anaerobic in winter are the main radiocesium source in the water column and cause characteristic radiocesium redistribution in surface sediments.

              Description:
Nitrate contamination of groundwater has became an environmental and health problem in developed and developing countries. Nitrate pollution is caused by the intensive use of nitrogen fertilizers, crop irrigation with domestic wastewater and use of manure, therefore, it is concern of diffuse pollution. The non-point sources of nitrate contamination make really difficult to apply the ex-situ approach to groundwater remediation. Nevertheless, best available technologies to treat nitrate-contaminated water such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange and electrodialysis developed for drinking water production cannot be used in in-situ application, which cause their technological complexity. Other alternative processes can be potentially used in in-situ application such as chemical reduction, adsorption and biological denitrification. These approaches can be applied in different ways such as a permeable reactive barrier or direct injection of liquid and gaseous reactive compounds in groundwater. Particular attention should be given to the process which allows simultaneous in-situ removal of nitrate and other priority pollutants because it is an effective topic of a groundwater remediation field. One of these was recently proposed by our group for combining heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification based on cotton as the organic carbon source and support material and zero-valent iron (ZVI) for cathodic hydrogen gas favouring autotrophic growth. This process showed better performance than the simple heterotrophic one, and it is proposed to be simultaneously effective for removal of nitrate, chlorinated ethanes and chromium (VI). This study, overviewing the latest developments in nitrate removal, proposes the most proper process(s) by means of economic, technical and design prospects for in-situ application regarding sustainable development strategy in the developing, in particular, Mediterranean countries.

                      Book Description

Constant organizational change has led to new challenges for the HR department. In some instances it has created problems. This book identifies the two key problems facing senior managers and HR directors today: This book shows that the management of careers in organizations is still possible if career transitions: The authors outline the analytical, managerial and leadership tasks facing those seeking to manage careers in a climate of constant change. Fully illustrated with case studies this book will be of enormous use to any director concerned with the future success of the organization.

"A thoughtful, very readable and well-documented overview of employment in the context of the huge changes in the world of work that have been going on through the nineties. From the point of view of employers, the book is of particular value in drawing attention to the importance of trust as the basis of the social capital element in the intellectual property of organizations." Godfrey Golzen, Editor, Human Resources

"Trust and Transition is an important book on an important topic. If organizations are to manage change effectively, they need to help their employees to do so too. This deeply ethical as well as practical book indicates why this matters, and how career contracting can make it happen." A.G. Watts, National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling

                        Book Description

While organic soils have the potential to contribute greatly to agricultural production, the irreversible processes that occur from draining organic soils need to be managed with caution. The wise use of peatlands must include the avoidance of unacceptable ecological effects on the contiguous and global environment. Organic Soils and Peat Materials for Sustainable Agriculture provides detailed information from a worldwide perspective on the degradation process of fragile peat resources used for agriculture. It documents the best management practices and defines and quantifies soil quality indicators and pedo-transfer functions for organic soils and peat materials. Co-published with the International Peat Society, this reference is the first to integrate the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of organic soils and peat materials for sustainable agriculture and horticulture. It details the principles and indicators behind positive action in sustainable management. The book presents a complete analysis of how peat works chemically, physically, and ecologically. It quantifies the moorsh-forming, or peat degradation, process in tables and figures, provides conversion equations among pH determination methods, and supplies a novel diagnosis of N and P release. In addition, the book revisits water, pesticides, phosphorus, and copper sorption characteristics of organic soils. The authors provide up-to-date information in order to define quality indicators for the optimum use of organic soils. With detailed information and a global perspective, Organic Soils and Peat Materials for Sustainable Agriculture aims to promote a shift from the current paradigm of input-based unsustainable use to a new knowledge-based approach.

To enhance understanding and bring the material to life, Understanding Sport Organizations: The Application of Organization Theory, Second Edition, references numerous current examples. Each chapter opens with a practical example of a sport organization and closes with a case for analysis that allows the reader to directly apply the information from the chapter. Hei! I'm a norwegian(!) girl who's been trying to learn herself turkish. this book is really awesome!! it explains all the grammar so nice, so even me who's a foreigner can understand it. (And I've learned quite a lot of english grammar as well I think;) The only thing I'd like more of, are the exercises at the end of each chapter. (I don't always get the point in just one exersice). apart from that, this is the best book I've found so far. (And I've tried several:P )
Good luck to everyone buying it!! Eli:)

I found this book to be the most helpful learning tool for the Turkish language. It has a good blend of grammer and vocabulary. There are many helpful exercises including crossword puzzles and fill in the blank questions. Most books that I've found only cover grammar and don't have any practical information. I visited Turkey and all the expressions that I needed were found in this book. Even with grammatical errors, the locals were able to understand me. If you want to be a Turkish scholar then spend $200 on another course, but if you are just a tourist and want to know "practical" Turkish then this is the best resource available. It is in very simple terms and easy to understand. I definitely suggest this book.

4 out of 5 stars "What David wish he knew before he moved to Turkey".......2007-05-22

This book teaches the grammer very well. For me it is helpful alongside other picture based (Such as Rosetta Stone) learning programs. I have 4 more months to improve my Turkish before my trip and I think that I am well on my way with this program. It will take determiniation though. The hardest thing i find is the pronunciation. If you already speak Spanish it may be even more difficult as the sounds are more French and German like.

                                5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2007-02-10

The program worked really well for me to learn how to generally get around in the language, but immersion combined with diligence in completing the workbook exercises is really the key to making this program successful.

                                Book Description

For more than a hundred million years, sea turtles have been swimming in the world's oceans. These magnificent, long-lived creatures spend their lives in the water, coming ashore to lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the baby turtles leave the nest and enter a dangerous world of storms and predators. The females will return to the same beach to lay their own eggs when they reach maturity a decade later. Today, there are seven species of sea turtle: the grass--eating green turtle; the sea sponge--eating hawksbill; the olive ridley; the Kemp's ridley, which is the smallest species; the loggerhead; the flatback of Australia; and the giant leatherback. Having escaped the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs, these ancient reptiles today face new dangers that threaten their survival: pollution, hunting, and the destruction of their nesting grounds. Will this century be the last to witness their majesty? Will succeeding generations live in a world devoid of their graceful presence?

Marine biologist James R. Spotila has spent much of his life unraveling the mysteries of these graceful creatures and working to ensure their survival. In Sea Turtles, he offers a comprehensive and compelling account of their history and life cycle based on the most recent scientific data -- and suggests what we can do now to save them. From the Kemp's ridley, which nests on a single beach on Mexico's Gulf Coast, to the nomadic leatherback, which can weigh up to a ton and is in the most imminent danger of extinction, Spotila offers a vivid description of their diets and mating habits, and the conservation efforts being made on their behalf. Illustrated with stunning color photographs by the world's leading nature photographers, Sea Turtles will inform and inspire readers of all ages everywhere.

This book was fabulous. At first I thought it would be a tough kind of informational book to read, but it was not! It was written in layman terms and easy to read. The pictures are nothing less than gorgeous. There is so much information packed in this book it was hard to decide what to leave out! Also this book would be a beautiful coffee table book because the quality and pictures are wonderful. There was plenty of information about conservation and even though my daughter has always loved turtles now she is an activist and has joined a save the sea turtles foundation. This book was a godsend and a pleasure to read.

This book is beautiful. From one of the top sea turtle conservationists. It covers almost everything there is to know about sea turtles. The diagrams of turtle anatomy really help to understand these creatures. It is also great that Spotila profiles some of the dedicated conservationists working to protect the turtles. The pictures are stunning. The books large pages do the pictures and the turtles justice. After reading the book, you feel as if you have been initiated into the world of sea turtles. And, an added bonus, a portion of the royalties will be donated to Leatherback Trust. In short, if you like sea turtles, buy this book.

I am a biologist and found this book filled with inspiration because it offered so many ways we all can help with saving the sea turtles. I plan to do my part, how about you?

5 out of 5 stars Sea Turtle Lovers: Your Book Has Arrived!.......2005-09-10

James Spotila has produced one of those "labor of love" books that belongs on the shelf or coffee table of anyone who has ever enjoyed viewing a sea turtle.

Up to now these poorly understood gentile reptiles have been exploited to near extinction. Hopefully now the new understanding that these are wonderful sea creatures that deserve protection and respect is here to stay. Mr. Spotila's book will make a turtle lover out of anyone and I hope that it is widely read and becomes that classic natural history book on the 7 species of sea turtle that it should be.
