Book Description

Researchers in many fields are increasingly finding the Bayesian approach to statistics to be an attractive one. This book introduces the reader to the use of Bayesian methods in the field of econometrics at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level. The book is self-contained and does not require that readers have previous training in econometrics. The focus is on models used by applied economists and the computational techniques necessary to implement Bayesian methods when doing empirical work. Topics covered in the book include the regression model (and variants applicable for use with panel data), time series models, models for qualitative or censored data, nonparametric methods and Bayesian model averaging. The book includes numerous empirical examples and the website associated with it contains data sets and computer programs to help the student develop the computational skills of modern Bayesian econometrics.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-12-29

I was a Econ major who went through four years of the program without hearing about Bayes. I first learned about Bayesian statistics through the artificial intelligence community, where Baysian Networks has really revitalized the field in the past ten years or so.

What I am finding after reading the first parts of the book is that the methods used in AI are also used in Bayesian Econometrics. I was also surprised to see that MATLAB, which is popular among engineers and computer scientists, is also used in for Bayesian Econometrics. It seems that the economists may have found the value of Bayesian inference before the computer scientists did.

I wonder if the conclusions made in Steven Levitt's Freakonomics using classical econometrics would have been different if Bayesian econometrics was used instead.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in the wilderness of his formulations.......2006-07-25

This could have been a great book. But, it is lost in the wilderness of its own formulations. It lacks focus.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-02-20

This is GREAT book which explains complicated concept in a very plain manner. The computer program (MATLAB) they posted on the web is also crearily written and very organized. I highly recommend this book for anyone who are interested in Bayesian Econometrics.

Book Description

About two hundred and forty years ago, an English clergyman named Thomas Bayes developed a method to calculate the chances of uncertain events in the light of accumulating evidence. Though his method has extensive applications to the work of economists, it is only recent advances in computing that have made it possible to exploit its full power. In this new and expanding area, Tony Lancaster 's text provides a comprehensive introduction to the Bayesian way of doing applied economics. Using clear explanations and practical illustrations and problems, the text presents innovative, computer-intensive ways for applied economists to use the Bayesian method. In addition, each chapter includes numerical and graphical examples and demonstrates their solutions using the S programming language and Bugs software.

4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-04-12

I'm taking an intro to Bayesian stats class and we are using the Carlin & Louis book -- it is a POS.

I found this book in the library and it is much better. It gives very clear explanations of the ideas, and lots of concrete worked examples. Props to the author.

5 out of 5 stars Clear as crystal and plenty of workouts.......2006-07-25

This is as clear as crystal. It also has plenty of workouts. It is a very useful volume.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-19

If you are looking for a book for Bayesian estimation, this is the one. The first several chapters say it all about Bayesian methods. The rest of the book is applications. Very helpful reading for learning the method.

          Book Description

The aim of this book is to provide researchers in economics, finance, and statistics with an up-to-date introduction to applying Bayesian techniques to empirical studies. It covers the full range of the new numerical techniques which have been developed over the last thirty years, notably: Monte Carlo sampling, antithetic replication, importance sampling, and Gibbs sampling. The author covers both advances in theory and modern approaches to numerical and applied problems. The book includes applications drawn from a variety of different fields within economics and also provides a quick overview to the underlying statistical ideas of Bayesian thought. The result is a book which presents a roadmap of applied economic questions that can now be addressed empirically with Bayesian methods. Consequently, many researchers will find this a readily readable survey of this growing research topic.

            Book Description

This book explores the econometric implications of a policy-maker's learning. In a simple discrete model the policymaker maximizes the discounted sum of tax revenues subject to a constraint which involves an unknown parameter specifying the occurrence of Bayesian learning. An optimal balance needs to be found between maximizing current payoff and generating information which enhances the efficiency of maximization in subsequent periods. Learning is demonstrated to affect the exogeneity status of policy variables in small samples and to have implications analogous to the phenomenon in the focus of the Lucas critique. Active learning is proven to be a distinct cause of time inconsistency of optimal plane. It is argued that learning cannot be dismissed as a merely transitory source of these phenomena. A simulation exercise supplies quantitative evidence. Finally, the data generated are used to perform empirical exogeneity tests. Results show that the effect of Bayesian learning is empirically detectable. Learning is generally accepted as the driving force towards a rational expectations equilibrium with perfect information. In this context, the result on the loss of exogeneity of policy variables is an out-of-equilibrium econometric implication of the rational expectations hypothesis. This book is the first to explore the effect of an informational feedback on exogeneity.

1 out of 5 stars Well, at least I didn't pay for it.......2006-06-22

This was a free, 4-for-3 book that looked interesting and I thought would be a good way for me to put together a climbing wall for my foster children that wasn't a plastic one you get at the toy stores. Children get bored on those little tiny walls with plastic holds; I am experienced in woodworking and masonry and wanted to put something up in my basement or garage (which the book specifically promises to be geared to). I don't have a 25-foot ceiling like he does and there seems to be no way to scale down the walls (no pun intended). The entire first page basically says, "Don't build your own wall without an architect or a structural engineer." Thanks.

                          1 out of 5 stars Weak.......2002-02-09

This book hardly even covers the basics in building a wall. Very few diagrams and even fewer innovative ideas. He doesn't even bother to include many picture of walls in order to get ideas. Even the limited information free on the web surpasses the details in this book.

                          1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2001-05-22

This book is an awful intro to building indoor rock walls. Outdated and too thin. It reccommends creating your own holds which is a good way to make poor holds. The Metolious website offers at least as much info as this book and it's free. Unfortunately, there is no other book to reccommend that covers building indoor walls. Someone still needs to write it.

2 out of 5 stars Book for climbers.......2000-03-24

Althought this book was well written and a little useful, it seemed to me about making holds and construction techniques. I was looking for a book that might have info on self-belay and anchoring but the author writes that anchoring is a subject he doesn't want to write about and never mentions self-belay. He doesn't even mention floor padding for your home gym. It's a thin book for the money (26 pages) and the price per page was a little steep.

5 out of 5 stars clearly explained and very useful.......1999-03-19

I found this book very interesting. It is well organized and will serve people at all levels of experience. I would like to see more work by this author.

The Surveyor Reference Manual is the most comprehensive reference and study guide available for surveyors preparing for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam. New chapters on GPS, electronic distance measurement, geographic information systems, economics, job costing, and ethics have been added to this edition to meet the current NCEES survey exam specifications.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Background Book.......2007-09-26

This book is resonably well written and is aligned with the NCEES models for Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles of Surveying (PS) exams. About 60% of book is math related starting with fractional multiplication and proceeding through state plane to Lat/Lon conversions. Other areas include limited introductions to Boundary Law and Business Practices. Outside of the math, I would not depend too heavily on this book for answers.

2 out of 5 stars Useful, but with drawbacks.......2007-05-29

I am married to a licensed land surveyor, and have been in surveying for five years. I purchased this book to prepare to take the LSIT exam. It is a useful review of the pertinent math and does touch on a pretty comprehensive scope of topics, but still leaves a lot to be desired. This is a new edition and is FRAUGHT with errata. I have to update from their errata website frequently. It would be bad enough if I was familiar with the concepts in the book, but as I am trying to learn new concepts for the exam it is very demoralizing to be working through a problem which has errors in it and I can't figure out why I can't make my answer match what they have. I've done the problem correctly, but they've got a bogus solution and without a solid understanding of the concept at hand, there's no way for me to know who's right and if I've got the concept or not.

Also bear in mind this is a textbook. And trying to learn from a textbook is virtually impossible without a teacher. My husband is my tutor and I am learning using this book and his knowledge together--you are not going to learn surveying concepts out of this book by yourself...it's just too superficial. They breeze through a concept, give an example and move on...there's no explanation or in-depth analysis of what you've just touched on. It is a fine tool for exam prep, but you better already know the concepts, or have a tutor available.

The biggest disappointment is all the errata. If they had done a better job of editing before it went to press it would be a far better and more useful book....unfortunately there aren't many to choose from, so you're kind of stuck with it for LSIT prep work.

Good review material. Although the section on Astronimical Observations contains misleading and un-needed anti-catholic comments.

2 out of 5 stars Less than impressed..........2005-02-15

Like everybody else, I bought this not because I wanted it, but because it was the class text and thus, required. In that sense, it did its job (and the instructor's) in that it conveyed the information needed to pass the exams.

                          The downside:
--Numerous typo's, especially in the practice problems, leaving you to wonder why your answer doesn't jibe with the book's. Frustrating.

--SEVERAL leaps in logic: The book will (loosely) explain a concept. Then it will give an equation with no explanation as to how it was derived from the original concept. Sure, you can just memorize the equation, but without understanding WHY it works, it's awful hard to apply it to the real world. VERY frustrating.

--Many concepts are glossed over. Not too useful to those making a career of this.

I suppose this book is somewhat useful for a refresher course in geometry and basic surveying math, but it's no value.

Get it only if you have to. And get it used.

This was the only book I used to study for the LSIT. I am not a surveyor by trade but a civil engineer. This book did a good job covering and explaining subjects that I had not been exposed to or hadn't worked with since college. Using this book to study with I passed the LSIT exam on the first try. Some of the exam questions seemed like they were taken directly out of the text of this book.

I found this book left me wanting for more "manual" type reference information. It is quite specific to Ohio area standards for highway and boundary surveys. It is not a good reference for beginners needing a "daily use" surveying manual.

This is a great book. The counterpart of Gary LaFontaine's classic on the caddis. The book is well researched, clearly written, well illustrated with drawings and photographs. Filled with recipes for all the mayflies you could want to tie.

5 out of 5 stars Western Mayfly Hatches.......2006-07-21

Everything about this book is first class, the quality of its construction, illustrations and top-rate information. The book focuses on info that can really be used by the fly fisherman. I found it both fascinating and helpful. If you want to move from guessing about which insects to use to being knowledgeable, this is the book to have. I think anyone confused by insect hatches and their importance to trout fishing will find this book extremely invaluable.

The book has a short introduction to the various types of insects found in western waters. From the intro, it moves on to the insects most commonly found in the region, their importance to trout feeding, the differences among them, including those existing between the male and female of each species, the patterns to imitate them (with appropriate sizes, colors, etc) and the best times to fish them.

This is a beautiful book and should be in any fly fisherman's collection. I highly recommend it.
