Book Description
Good management of inventory enables companies to improve their customer service, cash flow and profitability. 'Best Practice in Inventory Management' outlines the basic techniques, how and where to apply them, and provides advice to ensure they work to produce the desired effect in practice.
The book shows how inventory management techniques can be used in a wide variety of situations, particularly in stores where the inventory can be anything from fast moving products to slow moving spares. The discussion extends across distribution warehousing and manufacturers' operations.
The text is based on best theory and practice, which has been gradually developed by the inventory management profession over the years. It covers the inventory control aspects included in the courses for the DPIM, COM, DLM, CPIM and other professional and academic qualifications.
Readers develop their understanding of stock control by seeing the techniques explained logically and learn how inventory structuring, individual item control, forecasting and co-ordination provide the base for logistics management. This new edition has been up-dated throughout and the final chapter, The Future - Inventory and Logistics, has been re-written to reflect the developing applications of technology and changes in focus.
Explains how inventory management techniques achieve low stocks and improved customer serviceActs as a practical manual for making improvements in stock control and for saving moneyCovers the syllabi of the DPIM, COM, DLM and other professional and academic qualifications

Inventory management.......2007-07-27
The concepts are presented pretty clearly, however the author is a Brit and the terminology used throughout is a bit foreign to me. But theres a lot of information here for someone who wants to get an overview of what inventory management entails.
Theory is not best practice.......2005-08-09
I bought this book expecting to find examples of new ideas developed recently by businesses that are considered at the top level related to assets management.
What I found was an excellent summary of all the textbooks used in college for the last 40 years. I could even find a chart we used in class in 1972.
Best Practices in Inventory management must include links to Manufacturing strategies, postponement of production to delay costs, improve flexibility for lower number of SKU's.
I find the title pretty ambitious but not enough "meat".
Stock problems? Look no further...........2002-07-05
If you work in stock control, sales, purchasing, or production planning and really do not have a clue where to start in order to maximise the profitability of your inventory (both raw materials and finished goods), then there is no better place to start than with this book. It gives much practical advice that is easy to implement in real business life and emphasises the genuine cost savings and improved cashflow that can be gained.
What I like most about the boook is its structure - it starts with the basics (why inventory control is important financially), and takes you through basic forecasting methods to more advanced levels (e.g. double exponential smoothing). You can implement most of the advice in Excel or similar spreadsheet. I am no mathematician and I must admit I found some of the formulas difficult to understand at first, but please do not be put off - perserverence will pay dividends and you will see this perseverence hit the bottom line!
very practical.......2000-09-03
Pragmatic view to inventory management
This book is useful........2000-06-13
This book is useful. It is expected, however, to be revised in some points. There are some miss specifications in terminologies and in some chapters, explanations are not good enough to understand the equations or methods the auther used.

Book Description
BIOACCUMULATION of XENOBIOTIC COMPOUNDS is one of the very few - if not only - books written exclusively related to this topic. This book comprehensively outlines the principles governing the accumulation of chemicals from the environment by organisms. Packed with tables and diagrams, this work reviews the experimental data available on both terrestrial and aquatic systems. It describes methods which are used to predict bioaccumulation of chemicals from their physicochemical properties. It also reviews environmental and other factors influencing bioaccumulation. This text also includes previously unpublished theoretical explanations of several bioaccumulation processes, including food chain biomagnification. Information in this exceptional volume is useful to government officials involved with environmental management, chemists, biologists, consultants working with chemical waste control, researchers, and graduate students.

Description:
The paper presents a novel methodology (RICH, Ranking and Identification of Chemical Hazards) for ranking and identification of xenobiotic organic compounds of environmental concern in stormwater discharged to surface water. The RICH method is illustrated as a funnel fitted with different filters that sort out problematic and hazardous compounds based on inherent physico-chemical and biological properties. The outcomes of the RICH procedure are separate lists for both water phase and solid phase associated compounds. These lists comprise: a justified list of compounds which can be disregarded in hazard/risk assessments, a justified list of stormwater priority pollutants which must be included in hazard/risk assessments, and a list of compounds which may be present in discharged stormwater, but cannot be evaluated due to lack of data. The procedure was applied to 233 xenobiotic organic chemicals (XOCs) of relevance for stormwater. Of these 233 compounds, 121 compounds were found to be priority pollutants with regard to solids phases (i.e. suspended solids, soil, or sediments) when stormwater is discharged to surface water and 56 compounds were found to be priority pollutants with regard to the water phase. For 11% of the potential stormwater priority pollutants the screening procedure could not be carried out due to lack of data on basic physico-chemical properties and/or data on bioaccumulation, resistance to biodegradation, and ecotoxicity. The tiered approach applied in the RICH procedure and the focus on the phases relevant for monitoring or risk assessment in the aquatic environment refines the list of ''compounds of concern'' when compared to the outcome of existing classification schemes. In this paper the RICH procedure is focused on effects in the aquatic environment exemplified with xenobiotic organic compounds (XOCs) found in urban stormwater, but it may be transferred to other environmental compartments and problems. Thus, the RICH procedure can be used as a stand-alone tool for selection of potential priority pollutants or it can be integrated in larger priority setting frameworks.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money.......2005-08-31
PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.
I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.
This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.
I have not used this edition as much as I have the other 2 guides that I own in this series, but it did come in handy during a spur of the moment trip to NC/TENN. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographical maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.
All 45 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.
When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.
So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in the 'Southern Appalchians', you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.
Exploring The Appalachian Trail: Georgia, North Carolina, Te.......2002-10-28
I checked this book out of my local library and found it to be the most informative book on the AT. The sections of the AT that I have personally hiked were very well covered in this book.It is very difficult to find accurate maps with tons of land marks and information the terrain. As well as a well thought out itinerary so you may better gauge your time and enjoy the trail, rather than worrying about where you are going to find water and shelter. So now I'm on amazon.com to buy this book to use on my next visit to the AT.
not for the out of stater.......2002-05-03
I'm probably spoiled by the AMC guides for New England, but I found this book to be somewhat uninvting and lacking in some key areas. The maps weren't all that great they clearly aren't for a guy from the north east who's trying to find his way through the red dirt maze that is North Georgia. Directions to the trailheads could be markedly improved, as some (particularly the ones I used) use forest service roads that park rangers (let alone easily purchased maps) don't know well.
The copy and descriptions are good once I got to the trailhead, and organized linearly along the trail. I really enjoyed the plots of trail elevation over distance.
A guide beyond the day hiker.......2000-09-25
I used this book to plan my first trip to the AT with a group of Boy Scouts. It was extremely useful in selecting my route. Especially useful was the trail summary in the beginning of each chapter. Also equally useful was the hike itinerary, giving distances between significant points. I found, however, the linear trail profile to be slightly misleading on a few sections of the trail. (More useful was the profile found in The Appalachian Trail Official Map from the Appalachian Trail conference.) This day hike book was perfect for my 5 day trip because each hike begins where the other left off. This was vital in my planning and I would highly recommend it for anyone needing a detailed description of the trail. Oh, and don't forget your hand lens. :)
Finally, planning a day hike is EASY..........2000-06-25
If you're planning to hike a small day or two-day section of the Appalachian trail in or around NC, this is the book for you. I wanted to hike a small section of the trail, but I only had two days and had to finish at a very specific point. I used the book to help me plan the hike and it was amazingly easy; none of the obstacles I expected caused problems. The hike went off without a hitch, thanks to the brilliantly organized hiking guide. Aside from the planning aspect, the topographical maps were priceless along the trail. I considered doing the hike without a planning book, but I'm thankful that I used such a quality source.

Michael Furman is perhaps the most in-demand photographer of automobiles today, and after one peek inside this large, fetishized monument to the great flowering of the auto industry after WW II, it's easy to see why. Huge fins, bright gleaming chrome, and colorfully glowing paint speak of incredible optimism and consumption of natural resources. A swell companion piece to his Motorcars of the Classic Era, Furman is capable of focusing on details that really make a particular car stand out while never losing sight of the importance of the overall design. There are things you totally expect to see here, like the fin from a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville or the deco/ Futurist "angel in flight" hood ornament for the 1947 Nash Ambassador Suburban as well as full side views of the 1951 Buick LeSabre and 1959 Firebird III (which still look like they came from the future for rides to the moon in total comfort). But even the biggest car aficionado will see these immaculately-restored museum quality rides in a different light through the clearly obsessed lens of Furman, whether it be the fin and light detail of the 1956 De Soto Adventurer or the oil cap on a 1959 Fiat Abarth Record Monza Bialbero Zagato! It's hard to think of a better gift for a fan of cars from this era, aside from one of the cars. --Mike McGonigal
Book Description
The postwar era marked the emergence of all things American, and in the 1950s, cars led the way. The brilliant colors-pinks, blues, yellows, and reds-soaring tailfins, and grinning, wide-mouthed grilles of the 1953 Buick Skylark, 1957 Ford Skyliner, 1953 Firebird III, and 1959 Cadillac tore up the country's pristine superhighways and dotted the parking lots of new suburban shopping malls. These and many other striking models, which expressed the national optimism and pride of 1950s America, are featured in this elegant volume of images by renowned automobile photographer Michael Furman.
The book contains more than 150 stunning photographs of these motoring icons, many never before published. An informative text and an illustrated index of technical information describe the unique qualities of these spectacular cars, each more imposing in design, size, and power than the preceding models. Furman's technical virtuosity and exacting eye for detail make this unparalleled collection of photographs an eye-popping delight, an invitation for car lovers of all kinds to rediscover an era when the American automobile was king. AUTHOR BIO: Michael Furman is a nationally recognized specialist in automobile photography. For more than 25 years he has photographed important launches of such vehicles as the Nissan Altima and Quest, the Mercedes CLK, and the BMW-7 series. He is also the author of Abrams' Motor Cars of the Classic Era.
Customer Reviews:
Five star pictures in a three star frame.......2006-04-28
Have autos looked any better than Michael Furman's stunning photos, I doubt it. These vehicles look just perfect with liquid looking bodywork and perfect chrome, in fact they probably look better than ones just off the assembly line. This is fine art photography and if you wonder how the 'Furman look' is achieved there is a clue on his website. Click on BIO and you'll see a shot of his studio with an amazing looking light panel hovering over what looks like a very small car. It seems to me that his controlled lighting source is the key and when digital images are printed on quality paper with a 200dpi screen you'll see the perfect picture as on these pages.
The choice of cars seems rather arbitrary, classics like the 56 Austin-Healy, the 58 Ferrari Testa Rosa or the 59 Cadillac Eldorado are a few page turns from possibly the ugliest chrome grill ever of the 51 Hudson Hornet or the bubblegum styling and color scheme of the 56 Ford Crown Skyliner. As well as whole cars there are plenty of lovely close-ups of logos and styling features, the fins of the 48 and 59 Cadillacs, a Buick 49 Dyna-Flow trunk handle or the hood ornament of a 57 Oldsmobile Super 88. Furman's photography can make any vehicle sparkle.
Awe-inspiring as all these photos are I was very disappointed with the book because it is the wrong shape. There are seventy-one side shots of cars and they clearly don't fit an upright page. They rightly have generous margins left and right which means they are even smaller still on the page. If the book had been turned sideways into a landscape format it would perfectly complement these profile photos so instead of being small and surrounded by too much white space the existing ones would be three or four times larger. Another advantage would be to avoid the middle of the book splitting those shots that do extend over a spread. Also, for a lavish photobook it has the usual conceit of placing all the captions on back pages but because of the wrong shape there is plenty of white space on each page for the captions to be set in some elegant typography.
Michael Furman takes beautiful auto photographs and it is unfortunate that this book does not give them the exposure they rightly deserve.

Mike Does It Again!!.......2004-11-29
This book is another loving tribute to those classic autos that can send shivers up your spine sometimes, they're so cool. I simply cannot see how Mike's photography can be improved upon in any way, shape or form. Buy this; you won't regreat it, promise.

Micheal Furman created an amazing collection of car photography. You're taken by the beauty of the different design of the era. Excellent gift for any car enthusiast.
