Book Description
Demographics - the study of human populations - are a powerful, but often underused, method for understanding the past and predicting the future. In Boom, Bust & Echo 2000: Profiting from the Demographic Shift in the New Millennium, economist David Foot and journalist Daniel Stoffman take a look at the importance of demographics. They try to predict what baby boomers, "baby busters", the "echo generation", and other groups in the coming years can expect. This fully-revised edition of the highly successful Boom, Bust &Echo contains the most recent information on demographic trends in Canada and how they can affect your future.
Demographics play a critical role in the nation's economy and social life, and they affect every one of us as individuals. The more we understand demographic realities, the better prepared we will be to cope with them - and to turn them to our advantage.
In Canada, the aging of those born between 1947 and 1966 - the baby boom generation - has changed the economy, driven housing and other markets, and transformed social mores and lifestyles. As the boomers enter mid-life, as the "baby-busters" behind them come of age, and as the "echo generation," the children of the boomers, reaches maturity, how will the country change? Where will Canadians choose to live? What are the prospects for employment? Which investments will be favoured? What lies ahead for Canada's health care and education systems?
Everyone who plans for the future - whether it be for a large corporation, a retail store, a school system, a nonprofit enterprise, or for personal well-being - needs effective forecasting tools. Boom, Bust & Echo 2000 goes beyond the traditional methods of focus groups and opinion surveys to an analysis of statistical facts. Here is an original and indispensable work filled with arresting insights, provocative assertions, and practical answers.

Know Your Audience: First and Foremost - How Old are They?.......2004-05-30
`Know your audience' is the first rule of communicating, and an essential tenet of dealing with people is to know them, especially if you want to persuade, motivate, or get them involved.
This book provides a fascinating look at how demographics can shape attitudes, beliefs and, most important, actions. The authors maintain that: "Demography, the study of human populations, is the most powerful-and most underutilized-tool we have to understand the past and to foretell the future.
Demographics affect every one of us as individuals, far more than most of us have ever imagined. They also play a pivotal role in economic and social life."
Boom, Bust and Echo is a very unique and interesting book; it is well worth reading for the insights that it provides into the behavior of consumers or, as the authors claim, at least two-thirds of that behavior.
Interesting read but methodologically unconvincing.......2001-12-13
The problem with this approach is the simple assumption that a commodity enjoys demand depending on what age group it appeals to, and what is the percentage of this group within a country's population overall.
That is exactly the main argument of the author: show me the population trends, birth rates, percentage of age groups, and I will tell you what's going to be in demand.
This assumption needs to be defended more thoroughly, however. Education is a good example. Although birth rates declined in the US for the last 20 years, more people get university education today compared to the past. Obviously, the economy of the 21st century demands that.
Growth or decline rates of the population cannot be the only major independent variable predicting demand.

Having a bookshelf full of futuristic reading including Boomernomics, Next, Pig and the Python and the complete series by H S Dent and many books from Harvard press as well as every new economy magazine printed I found myself continuing to reach for Boom Bust and Echo as it has more backbone, the chapters contain more substance and historical data to back it up. I commend this book to be carried at all times with a copy to be kept by the bed.

Lean for Life by Bass.......2007-10-01
The author integrates dieting and exercise. He advises that starvation
diets ultimately backfire. In addition, exercise must become a permanent
part of the lifestyle. The author calls for tough workouts including
treadmill sessions up to 40 minutes building up to the highest speed levels. He cites the equation: Training + Enjoyment = Success
The body burns 14-16 calories per day per pound. A 165# person requires
approximately 2500 calories per day. Weight training keeps fat burning
because bigger muscles burn more calories. A 155# person burns approximately 90 calories in a simple 1/2 or so walk. This book could
help in losing weight and keeping it off permanently.
Good for Serious Workout enthusiasts, not for the average joe.......2007-07-16
If you have the time and desire to become a 'bodybuilder' or fitness junkie, this book is for you. Excellent psychological and physical information. However, if you are in the remaining 99.99% of average Joes or Joannas and simply want to lose weight and stay healthy, AVOID this book. Mr Bass's discipline is impressive but his technique is not practicable.
Here's the key to fitness and good health for 98% of all normal busy Americans..... A. 90% of the battle: Eating Habits-Eat meats, veggies (no starch) and avoid sugar at all cost. Fats (not trans fats) are OKAY! B. 9% of the battle: Exercise-Simple walking for 30 minutes each day combined with 1 or 2 days of light weight (5-10lbs) dumbell exercises. C. 1% of the Battle: Genetics-My wife can eat 10lbs of chocolate a day and lose weight, however the majority of us cannot. Therefore genetics should not be too much of a concern for us normal folks.
I have tried all the diets, fads, etc. I ended up dropping my body fat down to 6%, reducing waist from 39 to 29, losing 60lbs...All while consuming 4000 calories & 1000 grams of fat per day by simply walking 30-40 minutes each day AND by avoiding all sugars & starches. Kind of a version of Low Glycemic/Low Carb. Not as radical as Atkins, not as liberal as South Beach.
My method is simple routine fitness. Create a simple routine in eating and exercise and you will stick with it forever. Make it complicated, difficult, burdensome, exhausting...YOU WILL QUIT. ALL (yes all) of my low fat hard work out friends go through annual vicious cycles. The older they get the bigger they get. There are a few Jack LaLane's & Clarence Bass's who have the drive, but for us normal folks, we need simplicty. I hope this helps.
A Real-World Approach to Fitness.......2007-04-10
If you truly want to change your life and increase your help, this book will help you. You'll learn how to control your diet and have consistent workouts.
You can't go wrong with Bass.......2007-02-24
Do you want to lose weight? Are you ready to face the truth about weight loss and exercise?
Bass gives it to you straight up. How to control your diet and how to exercise to consistantly lose weight and get control of your life.
Following the advice of this book will save you years of trial and error. listen to him and do as he says and you will get ripped. Yes, ripped. Bass takes a very real-world approach to this subject and puts it in a life perspective. And he should know, he is, was and will always be ripped.
Bass writes in a great, down to earth style. it is like he is talking to a friend....the reader. Bass doesn't hold back, his advice is solid and proven, just look at his pics on his site and see how he has maintained a ripped physique for DECADES.
If you are ready to experience true change in your life read this and follow even half of it to change your life for the better. Do it for a month and see how your habits change...for the better.
Bass is the king of rip....all hail the king....
Truly the best in a crowded field.......2006-08-29
Clarence Bass continues to prove that his methods are higly effective, sound, and simple to follow for life.
He began with 'Ripped' in the late 70s, a book targeted to
bodybuilders but still one of the best books on getting lean, still applicable 30 years later. His more recent efforts Lean For Life, and Challenge Yourself are in the tradition of the work of the great George Sheehan, MD, both very motivational and very scientifically sound.
I too am a physician, and like Dr. Sheehan, am constanly on the lookout for books I can recommend to patients searching for a way to reverse the damage done by years of poor eating and lack of excercise. In the work of Mr. Bass I need look no further.
Mr. Bass combines both diet and exercise advice into a program that unlike so many others, one can truly follow for life. He emphasizes whole foods, regular aerobic and resistance exercise and motivates like no other author I have encountered. And though his methods are 'common sense' in the best meaning of that phrase, it would take one decades of trial and error to come to the program he has developed.
His books are not only bodybuilding books, following their advice will certainly lead to a muscular lean physique, but more importantly, they are books in the tradition of wholistic health. Following his program will produce an outer appearance that is a reflection of the health within as he has proven in his descriptions of the testing he has undertaken at Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque.
His intelligence and wit come through on every page and best of all his books are higly readable.
If I could recommend the works of just one author in my practice, Mr Bass would be that author. Do yourself a favor and buy and read all his books. Then as the great Bill Pearl, champion body builder says of Mr. Bass work, read again!

Now you really know what you're talking about!.......2007-06-08
When I picked up this little tome;I didn't really expect it to amount to much. As usual,I read the customer reviews, and was really left wondering.Quite a spread of opinions!
After reading,I have to say that I fully agree with those who gave it top marks.
I didn't count the things covered exactly;but there are about 45 or so. When you finish;you are going to feel there could easily be thousands of things and expressions we use all the time, without really knowing what they mean or how they came about.
An excellent little gem to lay around for people to pick up and wile away a little time. However;don't be suprised if,as the Irish so aptly put it; "it gets nicked"....oh,how I love that word!
If you think this little book is superficial, and just might not be one of the pinacles of greatness in the world of books;you may be right. But wait till you see the extensive Bibliography at the end of the book.If you think the subject of this book is minor ,just skimming through this Bibliography, will show you how little we really know of what we speak.
Here's a smattering of what to expect:
What is the legal definition of insanity?
Why are the Liberals to the "Left" and the Conservatives to the "Right"?
What is the difference between a Republic and a Democracy?
How do microwaves work?
What makes food Kosher?
How do subiminal messages work?
Did The Three Musketeers actually exist?
What pasta names go with whatpasta shapes?
If you know the answers to all these questions, you might find this book dull;but if you want to know some of what you're talking about;now's your chance!
Good, except the computer section.......2007-01-03
I did learn a lot from this book and the writing style allowed me to just read straight through. I would suggest ignoring the entire section on computers though. Too much has changed since the book was written.
All Fluff.......2007-01-03
Don't bother, if you are half inteligent, you should know everything that's in the book, just commonsense.
Bathroom reading?.......2002-01-31
This book has a charming cover and wonderful printing. It makes a nice gift for young people (they'll probably keep it in the bathroom?). Ms. Padwa's writing style is engaging. In the introduction she says that although this book is not thorough, it "has the facts you need to hold your head high" -- that said, I was disappointed to read a few misguided "facts" within the book. Perhaps this is because she admitted to poring over books and articles but did not mention any conversations with actual people. And, with the number of contradictory books and articles on every subject, this method would have to produce somewhat flawed results. The flaws are annoying but forgivable, and since she writes as if she is having a pleasant conversation, I still open the book to random pages and read a bit from time to time.
Neither a dictionary nor the Word of God. . ........2000-12-31
This book doesn't pretend to be the end all be all of knowledge compedia. It's a relatively humorous look at some of the things that you may have fudged on in the passed and hoped you wouldn't get caught on.
Roughly one in 120 people are allergic to peanuts. Fewer than 1/20th of that amount are allergic to MSG (if such an allergy even exists). Sorry, but it's a medical fact. N.E.J.M. Mar. 1998- If you want to read something humorous and mildly insightful, read this book. If you have serious concerns about allergies, see a doctor.

What makes popcorn pop?
When a dried kernel is heated, the moisture trapped inside turns to steam and the kernel explodes. Native Americans discovered dried corn's popping qualities over 500 years ago, often tossing whole cobs directly onto a fire. The popped kernels were then gathered up as they jumped from the flames. It seems popcorn derived its name from the old English word poppe, meaning "exploding sound."

Interesting Conversation Starters.......2005-03-06
Some questions are just better off left unanswered. For example, I was always curious to know what Head Cheese was. I now know the answer, and I almost wish I didn't ask. For those of you who don't know.. it's a boiled calf head minus the brain and eyes.
It does not pretend to be definitive, but it is very interesting.
In a series of questions and answers - Is French Toast Really French?, What is the Best Way to Store Wine?, What is a Key Lime? and the ever-popular What is Vindaloo? - Rommelmann takes you lightly through all of the major food categories: meat & game, poultry, fish & shellfish, pasta, potatoes & side dishes, vegetables & fruits, bread & pizza, desserts, coffee & tea, cocktails, wine, health food, sauces and spices, techniques & terminology, dining out, and miscellaneous.
The book's biggest flaw is that there is no index, so you can't look things up. If you want to impress your friends with a tidbit you picked up in the fruit chapter but can't quite remember all the details, you have to go through the chapter page by page to find it. I think there's enough good information presented here to want to refer back to the book periodically, but, without an index, it's not a reference book, it's a reading book. But that's not such a bad thing, either.
mahimahi = dolphin?.......2004-03-19
On page 32, Rommelmann says that "Mahimahi is a beautiful blue dolphin, native to Hawaiian waters (no, not Flipper, which was a porpoise), with fleshy..." and I was told it is actually a dolphin *fish*, much different than a dolphin (I did confirm with a Google search, Mahimahi is a dolphin fish: http://www.simplyseafood.com/guide/mahimahi.html). It seemed from the book that she was saying Mahimahi is actually dolphin, not dolphin fish, and I thought it might be helpful to someone if I pointed out that it is not a mammal you are eating when you order Mahimahi!. Love her writing style, though, and I really enjoyed reading the book. Most of what is in there I never knew! A fun read for only twelve bucks. :) [of course, you can get it cheaper here ;)]
Still, I wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the book, considering what a HUGE error that is.
Very fun to read!.......2003-12-28
Fun to flip through, plus you'll actually learn a few things! All the "Everything You Pretend to Know About"... books are great.
Full of Savory Facts.......2000-09-01
This little book is the sort you want to keep by your bedside, or by the toilet. Its for reading in small doses, occasionally. Not a reference book, it's more along the lines of Ripley's Believe It or Not crossed with Larousse Gastronomique. In addition to classic definitions, many current food fads are also described. All is presented lightly and not at all technical. Pure enjoyment!

Bizarre and utterly fascinating, The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death is a dark and disturbing photographic journey through criminal cases and the mind of Frances Glessner Lee--grandmother, dollhouse-maker, and master criminal investigator. Photographer Corinne May Botz stumbled across the "Nutshell Studies" while making a video about women who collect dollhouses. On the suggestion of a collector, she visited the Baltmore Medical Examiner's Office, where Lee's miniature reconstructions of crime scenes were on display. The macabre dioramas fascinated and repulsed her: "I was entranced by the details: the porcelain doll with a broken arm in the attic, the grains of sugar on the kitchen floor...I was also riveted by the miniature corpses. Shot in bed, collapsed in the bathtub, hung in the attic and stabbed in the closet; all were eternally frozen in miniature rooms that had become their tombs."
A remarkable woman, Frances Glessner Lee established the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936. At the time, innumerable murders went undetected because evidence was mishandled, or ignored. To train investigators of sudden and violent deaths to better assess visual evidence, Lee created the Nutshell Studies--dollhouses that students could study from every angle, with minute crime scenes details taken from actual cases. Lee created 18 dioramas, using only the most mysterious cases (cases that could have been ruled as accidents, murders, or suicides) to train detectives and challenge their ability to read evidence.
Botz reveals as much about the nature of obsession as she does about Frances Glessener Lee--each model is painstakingly photographed from multiple vantage points, allowing the reader to witness the astounding level of realism and precision in each case, as well as giving the reader unobstructed access to each eerie setting. All 18 studies include a brief synopsis of each case, as well as a key to each grisly floor plan. Perfect for amateur sleuths, aspiring medical examiners, and fans of CSI, The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death is grim and oh so bewitching. --Daphne Durham

Book Description
This fascinating and macabre volume offers readers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigator. Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother, founded the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936 and was later appointed captain in the New Hampshire police. In the 1940s she built dollhouse crime scenes based on real cases in order to train detectives to assess visual evidence. Still used in forensic training today, the eighteen Nutshell dioramas, on a scale of 1:12, display an astounding level of detail: tiny pencils write, window shades move, whistles blow, and clues to the crime scene are revealed to those who study them carefully. Corrine Botz's lush color photographs lure viewers into every crevice of Frances Lee's models and breathe life into these deadly miniatures, which represent the dark side of domestic life, unveiling tales of prostitution, alcoholism and adultry. Botz's introductory essay, which draws on archival research and interviews with Lee's family and police colleagues, present a captivating portrait of the creator of these amazing miniatures.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Fascinating .......2007-05-14
Great photos and a wonderful introduction about the creator of these "dollhouse crimes," Frances Glessner Lee. The book is full of wonderful photos of the crime scenes Glessner Lee created as well as background about the crimes she recreated. Facinating and beautiful despite its macabre subject matter.
Unexplained Photos.......2006-12-18
Had I seen this book in a store I wouldn't have gotten it primarily because I'm into dollhousing & am used to seeing excellent photography. The majority of the photographs in this book is very poor. There is a close up shot of a table with lots of clues on it but the photo is so blurry that you can't tell what most of the items are. Its a real shame too because they make cameras just for miniatures & those of you who are familiar with the quality photos in "Miniature Collector" & "Dollhouse Miniatures" magazines would recognize just how poor they are. Also because Mrs. Lee was very talented & it would have been a great pleasure to have seen her work photographed clearly.
For the mystery minded, the book offers clues along with the bad photos but does not solve the mysteries.
I would suggest that you go & look at it in a bookstore before you decide to buy it. You just might save yourself some money.
Needs more text.......2006-11-06
I got this for my sister-in-law and she said it was really cool but she would have liked more text--more information on the background crimes and their outcomes.
Excellent Photo's .......2005-08-04
I loved this book all except the fact they didn't tell you the answers to the death riddles and yes they do have them. Darn now I have to become a law enforcement agent to find out.
