Book Description

This book explores the organization of creative industries, including the visual and performing arts, movies, theater, sound recordings, and book publishing. In each, artistic inputs are combined with other, "humdrum" inputs. But the deals that bring these inputs together are inherently problematic: artists have strong views; the muse whispers erratically; and consumer approval remains highly uncertain until all costs have been incurred.

To assemble, distribute, and store creative products, business firms are organized, some employing creative personnel on long-term contracts, others dealing with them as outside contractors; agents emerge as intermediaries, negotiating contracts and matching creative talents with employers. Firms in creative industries are either small-scale pickers that concentrate on the selection and development of new creative talents or large-scale promoters that undertake the packaging and widespread distribution of established creative goods. In some activities, such as the performing arts, creative ventures facing high fixed costs turn to nonprofit firms.

To explain the logic of these arrangements, the author draws on the analytical resources of industrial economics and the theory of contracts. He addresses the winner-take-all character of many creative activities that brings wealth and renown to some artists while dooming others to frustration; why the "option" form of contract is so prevalent; and why even savvy producers get sucked into making "ten-ton turkeys," such as Heaven's Gate. However different their superficial organization and aesthetic properties, whether high or low in cultural ranking, creative industries share the same underlying organizational logic.

5 out of 5 stars The underlying economic principles for many industries.......2007-01-13

Dozens of books on entertainment industries come out every year, but only few survive the test of time. This is one of them, and not precisely for the encyclopedic amount of information and references it presents (you can actually get many more references by sending an email to the author), or for its practical value --which in my opinion is high. The value of this book boils down to its elegant treatment of the economic logic behind seemingly unrelated businesses like moviemaking or ballet. The chapter on contracts for creative products is truly illuminating.

The author provides upfront the seven basic economic principles that affect all creative industries:
1. Demand is uncertain
2. Creative workers care about their product
3. Some creative products require diverse skills
4. Differentiated products.
5, 6, 7: read them yourself.

While everybody in the entertainment world might have their own list, this one is written and carefully developed by Richard Caves.

The format might be intimidating to some (e.g., no pictures, no tables, no flashy stuff), so don't buy it if you are not willing to invest a little time and brains to profit from the author's reasoning.

3 out of 5 stars Okay for a look-see, but maybe not a great buy, per se. .......2007-01-04

Upon the suggestion of a very famous academic I purchased this text. This book is written by a famous Harvard economist, and I now know how much these highly esteemed professors can get away with. If you are looking for middle of the road quotes and want a new source for them, this book will easily do the trick. If you are seeking out a illuminating cover to cover text dealing with either Creative Industries or flat out Economics this book may leave you flat.

In all honesty, I did not complete this text and there is a strong likelihood that I never will. This is not to say it is without merits entirely (please note that I did give it 3 stars). It is just that the book very long and lacks an intimate feel of solidarity with either the artistic side or the commerce dealers. It covers a lot of ground, and I do believe that my wallet would have been better served if I had just spent an afternoon at the local University library thumbing the text and xeroxing what I deemed relevant.

4 out of 5 stars Positive People Management.......2000-08-02

If you are a first time manager, or you have ever encountered a difficult person to deal with at work then this book is for you.

The Antecedents Behaviour Consequences model described in Managing Behavior on the Job, provides an easy to use framework for understanding behavior and performance on the job (and at home for that matter) and to shape behaviour/performance without the connotation of manipulating people. It prevents the error that most of us make at some time in our management career, of making assumptions about people's behavior, and helps focus instead on behaviour that you observe as the starting point for bringing about positive change.

Brown uses 'Tracking' sheets and other techniques to help focus on observed behavior, and describes how positive behaviour can occur by setting the right Antecedents and Consequences. Brown also describes the process of how negative behavior is encouraged, by providing positive reinforcement, and what to do to change this pattern, so that everyone performs better and the right things get rewarded.

No book is a panacea. This book doesn't wave a magic wand and make the process of managing people simple - although it does provide very helpful suggestions which work to make your job as a manager/project manager that much easier.

        Book Description

"The book does well in several respects: First, it presents a broad but integrated view of the workplace as a source of stress. Second, it is thorough treatment of the topic of job stress and is well-referenced. Finally, it contains a clear description of the importance of organizational culture/climate as influencing perceived stress, a topic missing in many books." --Lawrence Murphy, Senior Research Psychologist, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Stress in the workplace is on the rise, resulting in higher rates of absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased health compensation claims. Managing Workplace Stress examines the cause of this increase in work-related stress, with a particular emphasis on stress created by organizational changes including redesigning of jobs, reallocations of roles and responsibilities, and the accompanying job insecurities. It highlights the everyday stressors likely to impact managers and employees, such as working with difficult people and managing increased workloads. This insightful new volume also offers useful and practical strategies for dealing with these situations.

                    Book Description

"I believe that this book will come to be regarded as a historical landmark in the way in which we think about and deal with 'stress'. While the analysis presented here is perhaps preliminary and one can argue with some of the conclusions, this book makes a unique contribution by challenging the complacent orthodoxy which characterizes so much of the stress literature. This challenge is not just part of an academic debate, but also has profound implications for what organizations and individuals do about 'stress'. I feel therefore that this book will be of genuine value to practitioners and researchers." --The Occupational Psychologist "At long last, we have a book which examines stress from this perspective and which aims to "present a critical understanding of the experience of stress and distress in employment" and to "use this analysis to explore broader debates relating to discourse, agency and subjectivity". I believe that this book will come to be regarded as a landmark in the way in which we think about and deal with "stress"." --The Occupational Psychology "The book under review makes a concerted effort to explain the genesis and growth of interest in stress and also to provide direction in managing new sources of stress.... Lucidly presenting and critically reviewing several models of stress, the book suggests clearly that most contemporary theories emphasise individual efforts and coping strategies in dealing with stress. The authors highlight the role of collectivity, particularly in organisational settings, in managing stress.... Evaluating current approaches to stress management and providing alternatives, this book is an excellent addition to existing literature. It attempts to excite researchers and academics in the fields of organisational psychology to re-examine the existing theories and practices.... Undoubtedly, the book is a welcome addition to the shelves of students and academics in the field." --Management Review Providing a thought-provoking and timely alternative to the current approaches to stress at work, Managing Stress addresses stress within the wider debates about emotion, subjectivity, and power in organizations--as an emotional product of the social and political features of work and organizational life. The authors first analyze the historical developments of the dominant "stress discourse" in modern psychology and elsewhere. Alternative possibilities for understanding stress at work are then presented, drawing on a range of perspectives from labor process theory to the work of Foucault. Next, they outline a powerful critique of the typical stress management intervention: Employees increase their effectiveness by becoming "stress-fit" for dealing with their work pressures. Finally, the authors explore various ways of "rewriting" stress at work, including recognition that stressful work experiences can be collectively produced and reproduced. Managing Stress will be essential reading for all those interested in this important topic within occupational and organizational psychology, social work, organizational behavior, and, more generally, within management and organization studies.

Riveting. I really didn't know how it was going to end. Was the internal temperature of the heap high enough to kill the pathogens yet let the aerobic decomposers work? Was the carbon to nitrogen ratio correct? Was the worm population going to survive or was there to be another mass die off? Wow. A real page turner.

Actually, this does have some useful drawings for making your own composters including worm based composters and turning devices. It also has a decent source list at the back where you can find the names and addresses of places that will help you recycle kitchen and garden waste.

I could have done without the political activism parts of the book. It polarizes the reading audience. It should have focused on helping those who are interested in starting compost heaps rather than trying to encourage a particular environmental policy.

                          Book Description

Recent advances in our understanding of the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of cell growth and control have led to sensational breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of proliferative and neoplastic diseases. As a consequence, cell growth and regulation has become a subject of vital interest to basic researchers and clinicians alike. Never has the need for authoritative reviews such as this been greater.

Comprising contributions by an international team of scientists at the forefront of one of today's liveliest areas of biomedical research, this book reports on the state-of-the-science in cell growth and regulation from the conceptual, experimental, and clinical perspective. Written at a level that will appeal to professionals as well as graduate and medical students, it explores a wide range of related topics, with an emphasis on the identification of checkpoints and restriction points and the mechanisms of proliferation competency and cell cycle progression, including:
                          * DNA replication and S phase
                          * Mitosis and meiosis

                          Book Description

No other form of fly fishing has broader application on so many types of water for both active and inactive trout. So argues Osthoff, who challenges the long-held notion that nymphing involves little more than dead drifting with the current. Osthoff advocates an active strategy of moving the nymph, applying effective casting and creative presentation techniques that will attract the most elusive trout. With comprehensive advice on rigging and prospecting, practice tips for a wide variety of casts, and strategies for precise control to bring your nymph to life, this is your guide to becoming a truly versatile angler.

Excellent book. Rich thinks outside the box and describes alternative nymphing techniques besides dead-drifting. The book also contains a wealth of practical information like how to put on split shots and how to simply build leaders

Nice reading when not possible going fishing but I expected more from the title. It is all about nymph fishing with split shots and floater not considering other nymphing techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative nymphing explained.......2006-08-06

I enjoyed Osthoffs comprehensive treatment of agressive nymphing in this book. Osthoff deals with every aspect of his technique from tying to rigging to casting and presentation to fighting and landing fish. The overall organization of the book was fine, but at times it progressed counterintuitively. In any case I got really excited about trying out some the techniques. I think the most valuable idea here is the concept of prospecting - strategizing and moving (yourself as well as the nymph) to maximize opportunities to trigger aggression in fish. Osthoff does an excellent job in explaining his ideas and the illustrations are very effective. If you are like me and spend most of your time dead drifting nymphs and want to expand your repertoire into active nymphing this is a great book at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Best and most complete book on nymphing.......2006-05-23

Rich Osthoff grew up fishing the driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. He spent many years backbacking the alpine lakes and streams of the Rocky Mountain backcountry. He is as consumate a fly fisherman as there is writing today. In this book Osthoff gives the most relavant and complete account of nymphing as a true sport that I've read. He relates how to rig a fly line for the various strategies an angler can employ. He advises on how much weight to use in a given situation, how to apply weight, how to position weight, remove weight, which leaders, tippet, indicators, line tapers, rods and reels to use. All this in the first chapter. In subsequent chapters Rich edifies on casting, moving the nymph, downstream strategies, upstream strategies and other practical applications. Osthoff also argues the long standing confict over whether nymphing should be considered true fly fishing. I regard "Active Nymphing" as the best and most complete book on nymphing to date.

I bought the book in mid-February and read it over a three day period. There was a wealth of useful information particularly describing correct depth, presentation, rigging configurations and other tactics. The following weekend I went out with the expressed intent to use the author's techniques and was very successful, catching 8 rainbows, cutbows and a couple of fat browns. Maybe a good day anyway but was armed with some very good pointers.

                          5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2006-03-03

This is one of those books I really enjoyed reading because of the wealth of information contained. Nymphing is not something very many people do, so it makes sense to have a look. In doing so, and applying some of the "know how" I caught 5 rainbows this weekend.. I usually fish in lakes so I was curious what he would have to say about this subject as relates to lakes, and believe it or not there was useful information. There is also advice on choosing the right fly line for a given situation. I never knew that in lakes a 1-2 ips sinking line was the ideal until I read it here. He also explains why this is so very well. There is a section on choosing which fly that tells you why - this was a first for me. (hint: its not just that it looks like food) All in all a short read with lots of information. I highly recommend it. (And no, I'm not related to the guy!) - Migs

5 out of 5 stars inspires the reluctant........2005-04-01

This book gave me confidence to go nymphing. It contains the kind of practical wisdom, echoed in many different situations, that comes from a good instructor and that I found lacking in the 3 or 4 other books I tried. The only thing better would be to get a guide with a similar belief in and passion for nymphing.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know.......2002-05-16

This book contains everything you need to know about nymphing. The author has been on the water for years and has an observant and analytical mind, and he can write clearly. This won't just teach you how to fish with nymphs, but why and when the strategies work. I've read a lot of books on nymphing; this little book is no. 1 on my list.

Tom Rosenbauer is one of my favorite writers when it comes to fly fishing and he has done an excellent job with this book. Covers everything from setup, leaders, tippet, water temperature, flies to use, techniques for different water types, strike indicators, on and on and on.
If you buy one book on Nymphing, well 2 books if you include Brooks' "Larger Trout" book, this should be the one you own. Very small and handy to have. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Timely and Wonderful.......2006-03-03

This is a timely and wonderful reference work. For those interested in uncovering information about seventeenth-century New England ancestors, this is an excellent resource guide. As many family researchers know, court records for the 1600s are one of three important sources of genealogical information, the others being vital records(town and church)and wills. The early settlers were litigious, being able to file their complaints easily and cheaply in the courts, without lawyers. Hence, there is a wealth of family information in these court files -- often highly amusing.

5 out of 5 stars A New Standard in the Field.......2006-03-03

Rapaport, a former trial lawyer, has worked for years as a legal practitioner with court records. This thorough and important work on a little known subject, outside the legal profession, will become a standard for genealogists and historians. For the first time, we have an extensive but readable guide to the intricacies of the often surprising riches found in court records. She provides an overview of the American legal system, the specifics of New England courts, types of court records, and where to look for them in each of the states, county by county.

This book is a must-purchase for any serious genealogical library, personal or professional.

It is so well organized, it will be handy for many future projects. I am impressed with its depth of coverage and its human tone with what could be an unfriendly presentation. Thanks immensely for putting this reference into the hands of those of us scrambling for answers to our New England genealogical puzzles.
