Book Description
This book is an effective, concise text for students and researchers that combines the tools of dynamic programming with numerical techniques and simulation-based econometric methods. Doing so, it bridges the traditional gap between theoretical and empirical research and offers an integrated framework for studying applied problems in macroeconomics and microeconomics.
In part I the authors first review the formal theory of dynamic optimization; they then present the numerical tools and econometric techniques necessary to evaluate the theoretical models. In language accessible to a reader with a limited background in econometrics, they explain most of the methods used in applied dynamic research today, from the estimation of probability in a coin flip to a complicated nonlinear stochastic structural model. These econometric techniques provide the final link between the dynamic programming problem and data. Part II is devoted to the application of dynamic programming to specific areas of applied economics, including the study of business cycles, consumption, and investment behavior. In each instance the authors present the specific optimization problem as a dynamic programming problem, characterize the optimal policy functions, estimate the parameters, and use models for policy evaluation.
The original contribution of Dynamic Economics: Quantitative Methods and Applications lies in the integrated approach to the empirical application of dynamic optimization programming models. This integration shows that empirical applications actually complement the underlying theory of optimization, while dynamic programming problems provide needed structure for estimation and policy evaluation.

OUR APPROACH
This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?
In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported fresh or chilled lettuce, chicory, and endive. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then

Sound Advice from an Expert.......2000-10-17
This book is intended for amateur meteorite collectors. It explains where to look for meteorites, what to look for, how to buy and sell them, and what preservation methods should be employed to keep specimens in good condition (some iron meteorites rust very quickly!). It is not about dinosaur extinctions, the threat to earth from asteroids or the origin of meteorites and tektites. It is true to its title and the author pitches at exactly the right level.
The book was published in 1991 and, although some of the terms have since changed, the underlying science is as valid today as it was then. The real strength of this book is the author's enthusiasm which flows out of every page. Some of the preservation techniques mentioned in the book cannot be found anywhere else and, if you have just spent years hunting down your first meteorite, or paid a stack of greenbacks for a first class specimen, then you will definitely benefit from following Dr. Bagnall's sound advice.
I cannot disagree more with the comments by the anonymous reviewer. This book is quite clearly not aimed at students of meteoritics, and there is very little evidence to support a terrestrial origin for tektites. No wonder he would not reveal his identity!

Excellent.......2000-06-28
This is a great book that covers a variety of topics of interest to both beginning and advanced collectors. The treatment of the chemical and mineral makeup of various meteorite types is particularly good. This book covers quite a bit of information that is not easily available in other texts. It is thick with information. This is not a particularly light read as it goes into some technical details. The content is well outlined and indexed for easy reference. The treatment of the subject of tektite origins is well balanced. The author accurately presents a range of theories on this hotly debated subject without drawing any strong conclusions. An enjoyable and useful reference for any meteorite or tektite collector.
Nothing New.......1999-08-12
This book is overpriced for its lack of new information especially for advanced students on the topic. One irritant: the author repeats old information, notably about the tektites being considered terrestrial impactites in origin. He ignores a considerable body of data which suggests tektites are extraterrestrial (ironically an old idea which is getting some renewed attention today).

Book Description
In August 1979, 303 yachts began the 600-mile Fastnet Race from the Isle of Wight off the southwest coast of England to Fastnet Rock off the Irish coast and back. It began in fine weather, then suddenly became a terrifying ordeal. A Force 10, sixty-knot storm swept across the North Atlantic with a speed that confounded forecasters, slamming into the fleet with epic fury. For twenty hours, 2,500 men and women were smashed by forty-foot breaking waves, while rescue helicopters and lifeboats struggled to save them. By the time the race was over, fifteen people had died, twenty-four crews had abandoned ship, five yachts had sunk, 136 sailors had been rescued, and only 85 boats had finished the race. John Rousmaniere was there, and he tells the tragic story of the greatest disaster in the history of yachting as only one who has sailed through the teeth of a killer storm can. With a new introduction by the author.

Enjoyable Sailing Adventure/Disaster.......2006-02-26
Although I am not a sailor (and was occasionally left beind by Rousmaniere's use of sailing terminology), I thoroughly enjoyed this account of the deadly 1979 Fastnet race. The book is a narrative of a summer sailing race turned disaster off the coast of England and Ireland. As a bonus Rousmaniere is a good writer unlike so many other adventurers.
One of the most striking elements of the storm is that its effects varied so much over a very small distance. The author, who took part in the race on a larger yacht, was never really in life-threatening seas, while other boats just a few hours away pitched and rolled themselves to pieces. Rousmaniere tells his story along with accounts from the yachts that had crewmembers perish. He also describe the rescue effort in detail and gives some explanation how more than 300 yachts could have been surprised by one of the largest summer storms in history. The most interesting chapter at the end is his attempt to explain the lessons learned during the storm.
A good account of a hideous sailing adventure that will be enjoyable to sailors and land-lubbers alike.
Fastnet, Force 10: The Deadliest Storm in the History of Modern Sailing, New Edition.......2005-12-11
Incredible story. Well written. My family are sailors and my brother sailed one Fastnet race, so the details were both fascinating and scarey. Couldn't put the book down. If you have ever sailed, whether it be in a small sunfish or a larger boat, this story will ring so true. You will understand the challenges and the forces of nature, and hopefully make sure you are well prepared if you try anything on this scope. Great reading.
Thorough, Exciting.......2005-09-30
Even non-sailors will enjoy the thorough account of how a fast moving storm from America's Midwest grew into a sudden, shocking fury that wiped out the 1979 Fastnet race. Several boats and their fates are covered.
Adults Only.......2005-09-11
If you are looking for a good guys vs. bad guys screed; if you are looking for a juvenile, sensationalistic piece, look elaewhere. This is an intelligent, objective documentary of sea disaster in which boats were lost and people died. You don't have to be a yachtsman, just a muture student of the human experience.
It's Just So Exciting..........2002-01-14
Rousmaniere has done a great job on this book. He combines story and technical data quite well. He obviously did a lot of research, and it's reflected in the book. If you're a Sunday sailor - or a want to be ocean racer - this book is a must!
Customer Reviews:
Atmosphere.......2007-07-22
This book gives a wonderful, alive, feeling about the Hillerman stories. It puts the reader inside the scenes , and makes one understand the characters even better. It also makes you long to be there and visit those special places, and preserve them for all future readers.
Extremely Useful.......2007-05-24
I bet that 99 p.c. of Hillerman readers do not know the Four Corners region, the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni reservations to an extend that they can exactly imagine what Joe is looking at when he describes where he is presently driving or standing. Here is where this book comes in. It gives a load of details about small communities, certain mountains or washes or canyons or what have you. b/w photos... well, better than nothing. Besides, the book offers some extra goodies like the Dinee names of places and how to pronounce them. I keep this book on the table whenever I read a Hillerman book.
Customer Reviews:
The author must be an extremely annoying snob........2006-04-11
For a history book, the research and footnotes were not very substantial. Historians have been getting a lot of negative publicity lately for less that exemplary scholarhip. Since this is not a very important book it will not be scrutinized the way Doris Kerns Goodwin or Joseph J.Ellis would be if they were to write about Florida. I felt like someone was snearing at me throughout the book. It seemed more like a big long blog. I'd love to read more about Florida history since so many friends live there now, but I truly hated this book.
On The Other-hand I Don't Always Love How You Translate Yourself........2005-12-14
Up front let me disclose that I get a heapin' helpin' of Diane via our local paper, where she contributes noisy tirades and rants about Western Civilization in general. So my opinion is biased...against her. Like Diane, my people are from Tallahassee going back to the very beginning, and before that to the Spanish Period at Amelia Island and St.Augustine. And like Diane I descend from the Roberts' Line; so we're probably cousins....as are most people with Tallahassee roots.
Diane's writing reminds me of my father's Aunt Jimmie. Like Diane, she and her heirs protest their association with the Old South (especially slavery) but you couldnt loosen their grip on the inherited silver service and china and crystal that slavery paid for (with dynamite!). Both are proud as hell for descending from aristocrats and money, and both are deluded in believing that anyone takes their protests seriously. I mean, this is what her book is about. On the one hand she asserts her equality & fraternity with the unwashed masses then discloses how she wipes her ass with monogrammed linen. To paraphrase my great-grandmother, herself a Tallahassee belle: Diane, we always love you, but we dont always love how you translate yourself.
Like her newspaper articles, her book is a noisy jumble of loose associations and tangential thoughts.
A fun (sometimes biased) look at Florida history.......2005-08-02
This book is actually three books in one: A personal family history, a general Florida history, and current Florida event editorials. Overall, it was an enjoyable trip through the anecdotal history of America's most um...culturally diverse state.
Diane Robert's family history is one that most people wish they could write. Going back some 10 generations (she is lucky to be able to trace back that far) for stories. You might as well give up keeping track of all the relations in you mind. As she described it, a written version of her family tree would cover the floor of a small apartment.
When her ancestors were not available during a particularly important point in Florida's history, she provides a description of events that is a stew of fact, anecdote, illustration, and rumor to make it colorful for the reader.
On the downside, when describing current events in business and politics it is clear that her political leaning is Democrat. Even though I may agree with her, this point of view may turn off some more conservative readers. My advice is, get over it, you'll still enjoy the rest of the book.
This was an entertainment read, however, Diane does make one key point at the very end that most of us can learn from, and that is history is written by those it serves. An event may have occurred one way or another or not at all, but the way it is relayed to others will serve the purpose of it's author.
The Real Florida.......2005-05-30
Great book, esecially if you want to learn about the real Florida. I was born and raised here, several generations, and learned many things I never knew, was enlightened about many things I knew a little about, and recieved answers to things I had wondered about for years. I was also disabused of a few misconceptions. It is a very witty and entertaining book. I was sorry when it ended. She gives no slack to anyone, even her relatives, perhaps especially her relatives. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Florida. Carl Hiassen Fans should enjoy it, as a non-fiction tie-in.
Diane Roberts - An excellent example of Florida-bred writers.......2005-04-30
This book is simply a must read -- historical and very humourous to boot -- for anyone interested in Florida history from pre-White-People to White-People invading and essentially exterminating the Native Americans to Election 2000 and Election 2002.
Diane is an excellent writer, having regularly -- over the years -- written for the St. Petersburg (Florida) Times and the Florida Flambeau (the now semi-defunct independent newspaper based on the FSU campus, but served the community as a whole). And a commentator on National Public Radio.
Her writing style, content and humour have always been superb. I don't know how better to put it: Read this book!!!!!!! You'll be glad you did!
Martin Dyckman (now retired from the St. Petersburg Times), Rick Flagg, Michael Moline, Michael McClelland and many other journalists worked at the "Flam" at one time or another.
