Book Description
In this study, Don Ross explores the relationship of economics to other branches of behavioral science, asking, in the course of his analysis, under what interpretation economics is a sound empirical science. The book explores the relationships between economic theory and the theoretical foundations of related disciplines that are relevant to the day-to-day work of economics -- the cognitive and behavioral sciences. It asks whether the increasingly sophisticated techniques of microeconomic analysis have revealed any deep empirical regularities -- whether technical improvement represents improvement in any other sense. Casting Daniel Dennett and Kenneth Binmore as its intellectual heroes, the book proposes a comprehensive model of economic theory that, Ross argues, does not supplant but recovers the core neoclassical insights and counters the caricaturish conception of neoclassicism so derided by advocates of behavioral or evolutionary economics.
Because he approaches his topic from the viewpoint of the philosophy of science, Ross devotes one chapter to the philosophical theory and terminology on which his argument depends and another to related philosophical issues. Two chapters provide the theoretical background in economics, one covering developments in neoclassical microeconomics and the other treating behavioral and experimental economics and evolutionary game theory. The three chapters at the heart of the argument then apply theses from the philosophy of cognitive science to foundational problems for economic theory. In these chapters economists will find a genuinely new way of thinking about the implications of cognitive science for economics and cognitive scientists will find in economic behavior a new testing site for the explanations of cognitive science.
Customer Reviews:
Clarity and strength of argument. A solid landmark in economic discussion........2007-09-07
Don Ross explores the tangled and much-argued relationship between economic theory and cognitive theory anad manages the feat of creating a cohesive perspective. Ever since the 1970s and the psychology experiments of Kahnemann & Tversky (which went on to win a Nobel Prize in economics - Kahnemann confessed he'd never in his life so much as studied Economics 101) the precepts of economics, based on the "rational man" have been under attack. At the same time economics as a school has see-sawed between avid Friedmanism and a more Keynesian perspective where the role of central agencies and the role of the individual have been under the spotlight. The last 20 years have been pretty lively in this the so-called dismal science.
What Don Ross does here is stand back and look at the various loose ends in all the arguments, and cohesively tie things together: showing that there is a neat fit between the way humans tick (he brings us fresh understandings of cognitive psychology) and the way markets tick: not an easy task in the wake of the roller-coaster of the last 20 years.
The authority of Ross' voice elevates this book above the sometimes shrill marketplace of ideas, and this volume, all 450 pages of it, really establishes a new milestone in economics. It should be compulsory reading in university courses and deserves wide reading the finance sector where the quants too often ignore the realities and irregularities of the humans who make up the market. This book is awesome.

Book Description
Although science may claim to be "objective," scientists cannot avoid the influence of their own values on their research. In The State of Nature, Gregg Mitman examines the relationship between issues in early twentieth-century American society and the sciences of evolution and ecology to reveal how explicit social and political concerns influenced the scientific agenda of biologists at the University of Chicago and throughout the United States during the first half of this century.
Reacting against the view of nature "red in tooth and claw," ecologists and behavioral biologists such as Warder Clyde Allee, Alfred Emerson, and their colleagues developed research programs they hoped would validate and promote an image of human society as essentially cooperative rather than competitive. Mitman argues that Allee's religious training and pacifist convictions shaped his pioneering studies of animal communities in a way that could be generalized to denounce the view that war is in our genes.

Book Description
In an industry where nothing is real and no one actually wins or loses, the possibilities for manipulation are endless. World Wrestling Insanity sets out to expose the nepotism, backwards logic, and power plays that have made World Wrestling Entertainment go round. Alongside many well known names in wrestling, author James Guttman uses sarcasm, humour, and facts to break down the secrets of Vince McMahon’s company and analyze the reasoning behind many of the decisions made. Never before has WWE, the McMahon Family, Triple H, and others been held up to the light and examined so closely. Why are some of the shows written as they are? Who has the company's best interests at heart? Who has their own best interests at heart? Could the WWE’s errors be nothing more than accidents or are they the product of cold and calculated manipulation? James Guttman's first book, World Wrestling Insanity, actually analyzes all this insanity and breaks down the McMahonifaction of pro wrestling. You better get your copy soon. Something tells us that there’s a family in Connecticut who would like to make sure that James’s first book is his last one.
Customer Reviews:
Worst wrestling book I have ever read.......2007-04-14
This is undoubtedly the most boring wrestling book that I have ever read. 99% of the time the author is giving derogatory statements about everything that the WWE stands for. I found the book so boring that after I had read 2/3 of it I put it aside, however, I do plan to later finish the book
Painfully un-funny.......2006-08-28
I passed on buying this book for a couple of months, mainly because for twenty bucks it's very thin and it appeared to be yet another book detailing the last decade of WWE shenanigans. After finally picking it up, man I wish that I could get my money back.
Did you ever go to a standup show where the guy tells what he thinks are the greatest finely crafted jokes only to have the audience be completely silent and just not care?
That is this book. There's very little wrestling fact/stories. Just this guy riffing on WWE tidbits of the last 10 years. And did I mention he is SO un-funny? He actually has to write "by the way I was joking about the last sentence!" a ton of times to make sure that the reader knows he was trying to be funny. And to add to the hilarity he adds a bunch of poorly photoshopped pictures spread through the book... HHH with a dunce cap!, HHH as the Mona Lisa, HHH as 80s sitcom star Webster! BWA-HA HA HA!! that's funny stuff! (by the way I was joking about that last sentence)
I'm not sure who this book was written for. Wrestling fans will hate it because it has nothing new or different to offer. Fans of humor books will hate it because it's incredibly not funny. I guess that leaves Guttman's friends and family. I hope your Aunt Ethyl enjoyed it James, because I certainly didn't.
A Great And Enjoyable Read.......2006-08-26
I know James Guttman from back when he first started writing JG's Raw Insanity Reports when he wrote at Pro Wrestling Torch. His wrestling reviews were both hilarious and spot on. When he informed everyone that he was writing a book, we all waited with baited breathe until it came out. What a wonderful read. James takes you inside the crazy world of WWE and shows you some of the craziness that happens in the wrestling business that we all know and love. For some (like me) who hates the direction in which WWE has turned than this book is for you. Every WWE fan needs to read this book. Great job James!
Rolling on the Floor.......2006-08-25
I think this is the first book since I was three, that I wanted to read out loud. My boyfriend and I took turns reading out loud. It is a great read for any wrestling fan, especailly those that have become annoyed with the absolutly ridiculaous storylines. He also does a great job of reminding us of the few things they do very well.
Funny Look At The WWE.......2006-08-03
I've always enjoyed James Guttman's columns so I liked this book. You can tell he's a real wrestling fan and his frustration with the WWE product comes through. Great parodies, witty insights and all around good read.

Customer Reviews:
Copyeditor's Handbook.......2007-08-27
I was very pleased with the way this purchase was handled from start to finish.
Writers can learn from this book .......2007-07-20
As a professional writer, I like to believe that my work does not need copyediting. But of course, there are always some improvements that a copyeditor can bring to any text. And as a writer, I can learn from the guidelines in this comprehensive, clear, and very readable book. It will likely gain a place next to the Chicago Manual of Style as a secondary reference to check for questions about grammar, punctuation, etc. The book's exercises and the explanations that accompany the answers will help you develop your writing skills and understand why copyeditors make certain changes in your work.
Great update.......2007-07-12
I had used the earlier edition, and find this to be a much welcome update, with valuable information on electronic editing.
Very helpful.......2007-03-31
This a great guide for anyone new to the publishing scene. No matter how great your writing and grammar skills are, you will need a book like this to help you learn how to prepare a manuscript properly. It is also very nicely written and enjoyable to work through.
Great resource for copy editors.......2007-03-09
A copy editor does not need much else besides this book. Not only is it full of those mechanical issues that trip up even good writers, but this book also offers practical suggestions for approaching copy editing job (especially important for the newbie in the field). This is an extremely user friendly book, including quick reference charts, many examples, and practice exercises.

Book Description
As the judges of a literary prize chip away at the author list,
someone else is chipping away at them....
When the chairperson of the prestigious Knapper-Warburton Literary Prize dies in suspicious circumstances, Robert Amiss (the token sane member of the judging panel) wastes no time in summoning Baroness "Jack" Troutbeck to step into the chair.
Speculation that a killer may be targeting the judges worries the baroness not in the slightest - it's the prospect of immersing herself in modern literature that fills her with dread. But noblesse must oblige, even when it means joining the ranks of the superciliati sitting in judgement of the literati.
With the baroness at the helm, the judges resume the task of whittling away at the short-list. But the killer, too, has resumed work and is whittling away at the judges one by one.
Customer Reviews:
Get the Audio Version!.......2005-08-28
Read by Bill Wallis, the characters that enliven Carnage on the Committee come to life with a bright glint of gold and ne'er a hint of dross.
The book is funny and bawdy. It is not the sort of mystery described by Amiss as one that could be given to an aunt to read and not be cut out of the will. Edwards flails about on all sides and makes a number of well aimed hits. Academics, Publishers and Prize Committees beware.
Hilarious Sendup of Literary Prize Committees.......2005-06-06
Although the Knapper-Warburton Committee, some of whom get bumped off, is charged with awarding a Booker-like prize and we are intrigued to find out whodunit, the real plot here is the skewering of the self-regarding posturing of figures in the academic and literary worlds. We have the Queer Studies, gender-concerned, politically correct, Derridean deconstructionist and self-invented stereotypes which might become burdensome if not for the poisonously witty pen of Dudley Wright whose lampooning is both deft and good-humored. Lady Jack Troutbeck, who insists on being called 'Madam Chairwoman' to the gasps of some of her committee members, is a real creation, one I'd love to meet in real life, although I might find myself cringing if she were to decide to puncture my own personal balloon of pretentiousness.
Anyone who has ever sat on an academic or prize committee will find much that is deplorably recognizable here. The madness is all leavened by the 'bloody good guys,' as Lady Jack calls them, who bring some sanity to the proceedings.
Thumbs up!
Scott Morrison
way out amusing amateur sleuth .......2004-11-01
Lady Hermione Babcock was the chair of the newly created already highly regarded Knapper-Warburton Literary Prize, but when she dies, a fast replacement is needed as the committee meets next week to work the long-list. Baroness "Jack" Troutbeck is asked to replace the deceased. Jack accepts the position even though she learns that her predecessor was poisoned.
Jack works the members like a virtuoso, but someone else is also working the members as another death, this time by drowning occurs. While the police insist it is an accident or suicide, Jack knows better. As the chairperson, she feels she has two jobs on her plate. First and foremost finesse her committee into choosing her candidate without these morons knowing she pulled a Houdini on them. She also feels she is responsible to uncover the identity of the killer as other attempts on judges have occurred.
CARNAGE ON THE COMMITTEE is a way out amusing amateur sleuth tale that uses obviously exaggerated stereotypes (including a mouthy parrot) that takes the plot over the brink, but never loses sight of the who-done-it nor the committee work. Keeping the wild hilarious tale focused is done by delightful Jack, a teriffic protagonist whose manipulation of the committee and others in her circle (even the killer) is brilliant. Ruth Dudley Edwards provides a fine tale that reader swill enjoy due to a maestro performance by a star deserving more appearances.

Book Description
Is it possible that the true story of the Watts riots has never been told? Just as many still do not believe the Warren Report covering President Kennedy's assassination, neither do many believe the story of Watts. Carnage by Committee uses fiction to explore the possibility that an outside radical hate group could have orchestrated the rioting and burning in Watts in 1965. Leading a people already upset by social injustice and the seeming lack of care by society, a well-entrenched and locally funded radical organization seeks to dominate the entire area. Backed financially by an American corporation, the quasi-military portion of this alliance is well-equipped with Soviet weapons and with secluded areas to sharpen their skills. The elimination of this coalition is authorized through covert action at the behest of a senate committee and delegated to a single man.
