The graveyard of dot-com disasters is overflowing with grandiose ideas gone spectacularly bad, and Philip J. Kaplan's F'd Companies offers an unapologetically acerbic opinion on dozens of the most outrageous. Kaplan, a programmer turned consultant whose own online dreams began when he launched a bulletin board system for pirated game software back in 1989, pulls no punches as he bluntly dissects Web failures that remain dazzling for their pretentious plans and audacious executions. There are big names like Webvan ("a classic example of PAYING more for products than they were SELLING them for") and Go.com (a "portal to nowhere"), but most here are less well known despite similarly burning through cash like a cyber-brushfire. In language far more explicit than his softened-for-the-bookstore title, Kaplan skewers the likes of Iam.com (which lost $48 million trying to convince models and actors to post their portfolios on the Net), OnlineChoice.com (which spent $20 million to learn consumers weren't interested in group buys of electricity and other utilities), HeavenlyDoor.com (which sunk $26 million into a site peddling caskets and burial plots), and Eppraisals.com (which dropped $15 million on an effort to sell online evaluations of antiques). The result is consistently profane, frequently hilarious, and usually right on target. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Not long ago, the world was awash with venture capital in search of the next Yahoo! or Amazon.com. No product, no experience, no technology, no business plan -- no problem. You could still get $40 million from investors to start up your dot-com. And you could get people to work around the clock for stock options and the promise of millions. Then, around April 2000, it all came crashing down.

Smart investors, esteemed analysts, and the business press found themselves asking:

  • Who knew people wouldn't rush out to trade in their U.S. dollars for a virtual currency called Flooz?
  • Who knew people wouldn't blow all their Flooz on a used car from the guys at iMotors.com?
  • And who needed a used car from iMotors.com when they could just sit at home and have 40-lb. bags of dog food delivered to them by a sock puppet?

F'd Companies captures the waste, greed, and human stupidity of more than 100 dot-com companies. Written in Philip J. Kaplan's popular, cynical style, these profiles are filled with colorful anecdotes, factoids, and information unavailable anywhere else. Together they form a gleeful encyclopedia of how not to run a business. They also capture a truly remarkable period of history.

F'd Companies is required reading for everyone involved in the "new economy" -- assuming your severance check can cover the cost.

4 out of 5 stars An extremely guilty pleasure.......2006-08-08

I'm a classics and linguistics major who's occasionally dated engineers, but I really have almost no insight into these companies and the corporate culture that bred them. Kaplan provides a hilariously profane catalogue of the worst offenders, explaining their failures, discussing what would've worked, and more than once talking about jacking off.

I found this a great insight into the mid-to-late 90s and a wonderfully funny read. I'm deducting a star for repetitive mechanics and sometimes-incorrect punctuation (just because you're a computer man doesn't mean that you shouldn't even try). That being said, it's pretty neat to have a tour guide who grew up wallowing in the midst of all this, so he feels no shame in saying things like "BUT HEY, THEY HAD 20 MILLION PAGEVIEWS A DAY! Douchebags."

Buy it; it's well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tales of Wasted Millions.......2005-10-24

I really enjoyed this book. It is a quick read, but will definately give you a chuckle. If you do not like profanity, this book is not for you. However, if you want to see how the dot bomb wasted millions / billions of dollars, then F'd company will share the stupidty of these companies. I just wonder who was dumber, the people who started these companies, or the morons who gave them cash?

4 out of 5 stars I like the guy-- he understands/understood the Dot BOMB era.......2005-03-07

What a character-- it takes this kind of guy to counter what the ivory tower gurus say is right...from the underbelly comes Philip Kaplan-- a good guy to know especially if you don't want to f___ up your company, business etc. Look at these flamouts-- there is something to learn from all of them-- even if it's what NOT DO DO.....gotta give the guy credit-- he isn't afraid to speak out....and we need more of that to avoid the next "Dot Bomb" era or will it be Tulips again???

    3 out of 5 stars Front-line insight, questionable format.......2004-09-22

It's a shame that so much money was wasted in the dot-com onslaught in the mid 90s. Philip Kaplan gives a pretty good and basic account of why some of these companies burned out ( and burned through millions of dollars) in the blink of an eye. However questionable his insight is to some readers, I'm sure many will be turned off be the profane nature of the writing.

I know what you are thinking. You buy a book with a title like "F'd Companies" you'd expect some profanity. But this book seems to be written in the style of: " Lets see how many times I can use the F word and various combinations of the F word, plus other curse words" Although amusing, it just gets downright tiresome to read page after page. If you really want this book, place it where your kids can't reach it.

A quick and dirty read, pick it up cheap if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! Now this is quality entertainment!.......2004-02-26

I wish I could find another book as funny and informative as this one. It is definitely one of my favorites!

        Book Description

There are a growing number of working adults affected by chronic health conditions that may be largely invisible to those around them. In this book, the author explores the 'silent' problem of unseen illness at work.
The author employs qualitative research methods to challenge the idea that if you look well, you must be well. While demonstrating the effectiveness of this controversial methodology, she uses it to expose the voices of a group of marginalized workplace actors who have hitherto remained unheard.

          Book Description

Soils are one of the world's most important resources, and their protection, maintenance, and improvement is critical to the continuance of life on earth. Soil Fertility, Second Edition, offers thorough coverage of the fertility, composition, properties, and management of soils. This book carries on the tradition of excellence established by authors Henry Foth and Boyd Ellis, leading soil scientists whose previous books in this field have become multi-edition classics. The Second Edition of Soil Fertility has been significantly expanded to include more information on mineralogy, while keeping the thorough coverage of essential topics. The book presents soils as dynamic, constantly changing bodies, and relates soil fertility and management to the mineralogy of their origin. Four new chapters offer updated information on soil charge properties, ion adsorption, exchange and fixation, and soil reaction. There is also a far greater emphasis on environmental issues, reflecting the increasing importance of environmental concerns to agronomists and soil scientists today.

                Book Description

Chloroplasts and mitochondria contain their own genomes and protein-synthesizing systems, but only a fraction of the genes required for the proper function of these organelles are specified by the genomes. Organelle Genes and Genomes reviews the properties of chloroplast and mitochondrial
geneomes and shows how such study is now contributing broadly to the resolution of important biological problems. These range from the use of organelle DNA molecules in evolutionary and phylogenetic studies to molecular investigations of the mechanisms underlying RNA editing, intron splicing and
mobility, and mitochnodrial disease. The book is divided into four parts. Part I describes the structure and function of chloroplasts and mitochondria. Part II discusses their origins as well of the structure, content, and replication of their genomes for phylogenetic studies. Part III considers
the genetics of model systems, transformation, the inheritance of organelle genomes and their intracellular genetics. This section includes chapters dealing with intron splicing, mobile elements, organelle plasmids and mitochondrial diseases. Part IV considers gene expression in organelles
including novel problems like RNA editing. Students and researchers in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and evolution will welcome this new contribution by an eminent researcher in the field.

As adept as Thomas McGuane has been through the years with a rod in his hand, he's even more skillful with his pen. Join the two like tippet to leader, and the result's as irresistible as a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear in the middle of a Hendrickson hatch.

For The Longest Silence, McGuane has trolled his inventory and assembled 33 essays written over three decades. Passionate, meditative, personal, and often very funny, they are filled with fellowship and connected by his love of angling. The title piece, a certified classic in the sporting genre, chronicles his quest for the elusive permit. Since permit is about the hardest fish to catch on a fly, the expected futility of not catching one hooks McGuane's introspection, and he weighs in with trophy prose: "What is emphatic in angling is made so by the long silences--the unproductive periods. For the ardent fisherman, progress is towards the kinds of fishing that are never productive in the sense of the blood riots of the hunting-and-fishing periodicals. Their illusions of continuous action evoke for him, finally, a condition of utter, mortuary boredom."

That's McGuane on angling in a nutshell; he knows the real action is internal. Whether he's casting for salmon in Russia ("Fly-Fishing the Evil Empire"), bonefish in the Florida Keys ("Close to the Bone"), or trout in Ireland ("Back in Ireland"), the catch is secondary to the pursuit, and the pursuit has as much to do with making sense of self and the universe as it does with anything aswim in a river. "When you get to the water you will be renewed," he assures. "Leave as much behind as possible. Those motives to screw your boss or employees, cheat on your spouse, rob the state, or humiliate your companions will not serve you well if you expect to be restored in the eyes of God, fish, and the river, which will reward you with hollow waste if you don't behave. You may be cursed. You may be shriven. You may be drowned. At the very least, you may snap off your fly in the bushes." McGuane clearly wades in with honest intentions; in The Longest Silence he casts cleanly to his target again and again. --Jeff Silverman

                    Book Description

From the highly acclaimed author of Ninety-Two in the Shade and Nothing but Blue Skies comes this collection of breathtakingly exquisite essays borne of a lifetime spent fishing.

The thirty-three essays in The Longest Silence take us from the tarpon of Florida to the salmon of Iceland, from the bonefish of Mexico to the trout of Montana. They bring us characters as varied as a highly literate Canadian frontiersman and a devoutly Mormon river guide and address issues ranging from the esoteric art of tying flies to the enduring philosophy of a seventeenth-century angler. Infused with a deep experience of wildlife and the outdoors, both reverent and hilarious by turns, The Longest Silence sets the heart pounding for a glimpse of moving water and demonstrates what dedication to sport reveals about life.

5 out of 5 stars smooth and satisfying.......2003-12-31

I am adding The Longest Silence to my list of favorite books on the subject of fly fishing. I do believe that some thoughts are too deep for words. But McGuane's words dive deeper than any book I've ever read. I admit, as a life long Michigan resident, that the first chapter based on the Pere Marquette River hooked me. But, as I read I realized that whether he wrote about Michigan, or Montana, or Argentina that the location is not what it's all about. It's about the long silent moments. Everything else "has nothing to do with the necessity but rather with the elaboration of the dream that is fishing".

5 out of 5 stars One of the best about the silence and joy of fly fishig.......2002-01-18

Over the past 20 years I have fished great rivers, streams and oceans. True, this isn't about how to be an expert fly fisherman but more about how to appreciate the sport. The author captivates you from the start and gives a very personal touch to a very personal place and time. For those who have never tried or experienced fly fishing a stream in a secluded area or watched nature announce the arrival of salt water fish, this is a must read. Compared to many of the great writers on the subject, and there are many, this writer raises the bar and leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars The examined life (and fly fishing, too)........2001-11-06

Well crafted, clean prose. A delight and a high spot in this year's reading.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, words to describe the fishing landscape.......2001-08-16

I came upon this book from a friend on a fishing trip to Baja. McGuane's crystalline dissection of fishing personalities and motivations are as crisp as his deep knowledge of fishing. It actually affected how I fished... I agree that the first half of the book is in bulk superior to the latter half, though his descriptions of 70s Key West was just perfect (I grew up in SoFL). His salt water bravado tales are oddly set against his erudite stream fishing tales. Anyone who fishes will love this book, anyone who does not fish may leave with a better sense of the madness. McGuane succeeds in writing about fishing so well that he makes Hemmingway's attempts seem crude and unknowing.

Thomas McGuane knows much about fish, fishing and fishermen. He also sees that the migratory fish is like a canary in a mineshaft. If it dies, the future of other even human life is threatened. Like the true angler he is more interested in the quality of his experiences in the fishing domain than in catching fish. Like Falkus but unlike most other angling writers, he perceives and conveys to his reader that fishing is not a competitive activity (like for instance golf or bridge), but rather it is an opportunity for man to engage with raw nature and from that engagement to learn humility.

1 out of 5 stars 5 stars? Are the other reviewers nuts?.......2006-11-12

I bought this book in part because its "attorney" author made it stand out from the pack. I hoped it would deal with potential legal pitfalls and issues related to FSBO. Instead, it's a very, very basic mishmash of tips crying out for a good developmental edit. The text is disorganized, annoyingly phrased, and light on content (it takes a large typeface and a lot of subheads to stretch it to 170 pp). If you've bought real estate, or read a major metropolitan newspaper, you don't need this book.

Sample sentence (p.45): "A well-done _For Sale_ sign will hopefully grab the attention of the passers-by."

Buy it, and here's what you'll learn: That "Balc" in a newspaper ad means "Balcony" (p.47). That (under the heading "The Right Sunday Newspaper") "there typically is one newspaper in your area that is considered _the_ place to advertise a home for sale" (p.61). That if a buyer presents you with an offer, you should say "I need to discuss this with my wife" (p.77). That the following are good words to use when writing an ad: "pristine, spacious, tree-studded, bright, flawless, and most-desirable" (p.41).

It's particularly annoying that all the "vocabulary words" throughout the text re in italics, even when they're words like "contact information," "realtor," or "stuff" (as in, "most people accumulate more _stuff_ than they will ever use," p.157). Often words are italicized for no reason, as in this mangled marketing tip: "...many people send _photo postcards_ of their family or children. These photo postcards tell a _thousand words_ updating friends and family visually with the picture."

When we decided to sell our own home, we thought it would be wise to get advice from an attorney. Well, we found it where we least expected: from a book written by Joseph DiBlasi, Attorney at Law. This book taught us to determine the value of our home, when to advertise, how to negotiate, and - last but not least - how to prepare the right contract. DiBlasi must be a very experienced real estate attorney. Go by his advice! It helped us tremendously.

From start to finish, this book takes the reader by the hand and methodically explains each and every step that a person needs to know and do in order to sell a home without a broker. Jam-packed with practical, useful information and well-researched advice. Experienced brokers should even read this book!

Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives to pharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal reference on hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patient wants to add herbs--let's say St. John's wort--to his drug regimen. Should the patient stop taking the Paxil he's been on for depression, and if so, how long must he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what's the recommended dosage?

The PDR for Herbal Medicines will go a long way towards answering such questions. The physician in this case would learn, after consulting the PDR, that "St. John's wort taken concomitantly with an SSRI ... may lead to an increased effect and possible toxicity 'serotonin syndrome', e.g., sweating, tremor, flushing, confusion and agitation." The same physician will also learn that the German Federal Health Authority's Commission E, which has studied the effects of hundreds of herbs, approved St. John's wort for depressive moods, among other conditions.

For more information, the physician can read about the trade names, descriptions of all the medicinal parts of the plant, actions and pharmacology (including the compounds and their effects, with citations), the results of clinical trials, contraindications, precautions and adverse reactions (photosensitization is a biggie for St. John's wort), dosage information, and a complete list of literature citations.

The second edition of this mammoth guide includes over 100 entries more than the first, bringing the total to more than 700. Additions include a selection of Asian herbs, such as Buplerum Chinese (also known as Chinese thoroughwax), which is used in Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, and homeopathic preparations; a directory of manufacturers (with Internet addresses when available), a safety guide (don't use kava kava while nursing), and more. There's even a section that lists unproven uses for each herb. But make no mistake: this is a mainstream reference that relies on scientific proof above all. Therefore, this is not a guide for everyone, but for scientific and medical reference, it's a helpful and comprehensive resource, and even those who push the herbal envelope will find much valuable information here. --Stefanie Durbin

Here it is in a form that can be used for scientific papers! No longer can all the "other" drugs (you know: The ones that have been used for centuries before Pfizer.)claim legitimacy via the PDR. Now there is room for what has worked in the rest of the world.

Great reference and takes the voodoo out of some of the "Natural cure" claims.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for herbal medicines.......2006-01-08

Being a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the US, I purchased the PDR for Herbal Medicines, 3rd ed. because I wanted to have access to western scientific resource material about the many (about 700) herbal medicinals covered in the volume. If you're looking for a good clinical or diagnostic manual for learning how to prescribe herbal medicinals, this book, by no means, articulates how to actually effectively prescribe herbal medicines properly. In order to prescribe herbal medicines safely and effectively, they must be applied according to a diagnostic pattern discrimination methodology that is suitable for each patient's constitution, clinical presentation and pathological disease situation. All that said, however, the book is an excellent resource for information about known scientific research, references to other source materials as well as pharmacological, chemical, toxicological cautions and contraindications for each herb covered in the volume. In fact, for this kind of information, the text is hard to beat. No one should use or prescribe a medicinal that they do not know the possible side effects and toxicity potential for that particular plant material. Although some naive individuals believe that all medicinal plants are safe to use, in fact, some herbal substances are toxic, contraindicated during pregnancy, should only be used for a short period of time, etc. This book has explicit information that is consistent with many of the best herbal medicine text books that I own. The book even has ratings by the well known German 'Commission E' board that approves herbal medicines in Europe for professional use. And if that isn't enough, many Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinals are also covered. There is also a section that covers many nutritional supplements on the market as well. All in all, I highly recommend the book to those who want detailed identification, dosage, usage, pharmacological and toxicological reference material for a large number of useful plant medicinal substances. This is a great book to fill in the blanks that many other reference texts simply do not cover.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough and useful reference.......2005-02-19

The PDR for Herbal Medicines is an excellent, thorough and scientific resource that will prove invaluable to physicians, nurse practitioners, naturopaths and others who use botanicals in the clinical setting. Also important for physicians who want to make sure that patients self-medicating with herbs are doing so safely. The various indexes make it easy to access vital facts rapidly.

Most likely, this text will not be as useful for lay herbalists, medical conspiracy theorists or New Age flakes who want information on the the "spiritual properties" of herbs.

1 out of 5 stars Buyers beware on this one........2004-02-04

This was published by Medical Economics and no author is listed. If you're a true herbalist, expect this book to be slanted to the drug cartel's viewpoint.

Andrew Bentley (Alfalfa and Buckwheat) aptly pointed out that info is left out and it says some data is not available, but it is.

Jerry Cott in his review points out their report on St. John's Wort. Do you really think this was not done on purpose? Imagine the dollars lost if people stopped taking the drugs that this herb will sometimes help.

Be sure to read what the pharmacist said. I applaud you as your lively hood depends on this type of manipulation of the truth.

Buyers beware on this one if you want the truth.
