There is a reason..........2006-08-14
... why this book is getting few stars here at amazon. It is absolutely terrible! Read it at school and was tricked to buy it. Among the 40-50 academic books I have read this is the worst. Totally unorganized and so badly written that you believe the book was written as a project in grammar school.
BORING.......2004-03-09
If you want to waste your money then spend it on Sundaresan.
This book is highly disappointing. If your professor tells you buy it then you can tell him or her to .....
If you want to master fixed income securities, then you only need to purchase one and only one book, namely "Fixed Income Securities: Valuation, Risk Management, and Portfolio Strategies" by Martellini and Priaulet. That's the best book out there.
Much better books out there, Poorly written :(.......2002-07-16
Only a good book for reference. Difficult to understand author's explaination of analysis of Fixed Income products. Many instances key steps are skipped in problems used for examples. Look for an alternative.
Disappointing.......2001-12-20
I found this book to be of marginal usefulness. The writing style is not to the point and at times disorganized. The book does not come with spreadsheets despite all the screenshots in the chapters. What good is that? Additionally, it is quite expensive. There are other much better books out there for the same price.
A robust book that covers with breadth and detail.......1999-05-21
I had the pleasure of taking Professor Sundaresan's Debt Markets course at Columbia. He has tremendous experience in the marketplace. This book does a good job of covering the theory while also covering the practical aspects of the marketplace. One of my complaints is that some topics lacked a step-by-step approach, and you found yourself looking at a huge equation and wondering where it came from.
Hits: Duration, Convexity,Term Structure, Auctions, Treasuries, Corporates, Mortgages.
Misses: Futures, Unsightly 3-dimensional graphs
I also have Fabozzi's Handbook and Fabozzi's Bond Markets, Analysis and Strategies. This book is comparable to the latter.

More About HRD Press Diagnostic Assessments
When individuals or organizations face significant situations or challenges, one of the first priorities is to understand the issues involved and to work out what needs to be done. In many cases, we do not need any formal assistance to help this process and can think our way through the steps that seem to be most appropriate. However, on occasion the issues or the problems may not be entirely clear and a structured approach can help considerably.
To meet this need, HRD Press has a suite of simple and easy-to-use but comprehensive diagnostic assessment profiles to help people understand their skills or the situations they face more effectively. HRD Press' diagnostic assessments fall into three categories:
Assessments that measure the individual are concerned with competency. These profiles provide participants with an inventory of their relative skills in subcategories within each topic.
Assessments that measure the team's or organization's performance as a whole (usually relative to the individual's perception of his or her own performance or level of competence).
Assessments that measure a particular task or situation in which the style that is adopted or utilized by the individual or by others is important to understand.
All of these assessments are described in detail on the subsequent pages. In most cases, assessments have comprehensive facilitator guides to explain the underlying structure of the profile and to help facilitators to provide structured feedback. Person and organization assessments also have detailed coaching guides which provide practical "how to" tips on each question in the relevant profile.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive examination of all aspects of the ecotoxicology of soil organisms. The book explains how contaminants reach the soil, traces their transport through the soil, and then moves on to examine the effects of contaminants on different groups of soil organisms (e.g., microorganisms, micro- and mesofauna, larger soil animals including vertebrates). The book also considers food chain transfer and discusses risk assessment procedures that are specific to soil conditions. Ecotoxicology of Soil Organisms is the only book to take such a sweeping approach toward soil ecotoxicology.

In part one of the book, you'll learn strategies to help you maintain peak performance levels (flexibility, recuperation, sleep, overtraining, injury prevention and rehabilitation, and nutrition and supplements). Part two covers conditioning, and includes comprehensive aerobic and anaerobic training programs. In part three, Emma explains strength training as it relates to volleyball, with detailed information on basics and principles, core-training protocol, and illustrated upper-body, lower-body, and combination exercise guides. Part four addresses every aspect of movement training, including plyometrics, speed training, cross-training, and much more. Features dozens of illustrations, photos, and diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good book on conditioning........2006-01-30
This book was pretty good. Had some very nice exercises that I hadn't thought of using.
Loved It!.......2005-06-04
I absolutely loved Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball. Not only did it include everything a player or coach could want from a strength and conditioning standpoint but the majority of the exercises and drills can be performed alone or with a partner. This aspect is great for players like me who are looking to improve their fitness in the off-season. No full-team or volleyball facility required!
Best Volleyball Fitness Book!.......2005-05-19
Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to volleyball strength and conditioning training. The book is comprehensive, extremely well organized, and far and away the best title of its kind on the market today (and I've read them all). The author takes the time to explain things in clear detail, not getting carried away with his expertise, which is the case with a few of the other volleyball conditioning books I've read. This makes the book appropriate for all ability and experience levels from the beginning player to the most advance athlete. I highly recommed this product to all players, coaches, and fitness trainers involved in the great sport of volleyball. My advice: Buy it!
waste of money, sorry .......2005-05-18
This book is a waste of money. Some of the exercises are the direct way to injury (e.g. full squat and leg press "lowering the resistance as far as possible" good-bye sweet meniscus!!). The exercises are ok, but how on earth can somebody introduce them without explaining the risks and safety instructions!?! Same with stretching in hyperlordosis....!
The author comes from basketball and didn't even take the time to redesign the sketches of the court drills. ...not very professional.
The general introductions into the different topics are mainly ok.
I recommend "Complete Conditioning for Volleyball" and "The Volleyball Coacing Bible"; that is helpful and professional sport literature.
Superb!.......2004-03-30
Excellent book!! As a trainer, I used the various techniques in this book to improve and perfect the fitness levels and sport specific abilities of my athletes. The step by step methods implored by author Tom Emma is unparalleled. I highly recommend this book not only to volleyball players but to those looking to improve their respective fitness levels.

Customer Reviews:
Best Book on Writing as a Profitable Business.......2007-04-19
This is the best book I have read on what it's like to turn your writing into a profitable business. It's an easy read, yet packed with real life examples from Michael's many years in the trenches. His honesty about what it takes to succeed is refreshing, and I especially enjoyed the chapter on e-books. A great motivational resource and highly recommended.
Another "must read" for copywriters.......2007-04-13
Add another book to the list of "must reads" for aspiring copywriters. THE WEALTHY WRITER by Michael Meanwell. I thought this one might be a little different from books by American authors, but found largely, what sells in America sells in Australia.
I found Meanwell's book to be less engaging at times than Bowerman, Bly or Slaunwhite's books, but also found that he went into much greater (and more appreciated) depth in certain areas. For instance, others simply glazed over speechwriting. Meanwell devotes a very indepth chapter to it.
I didn't make nearly as many notes in this book as I did in some of the other similar books, but I can see referring back to this volume on a regular basis. There is a ton of good information here.
Where this book falls slightly behind the previously mentioned authors is mostly in the formatting. In places, Meanwell's work seems crammed and some of the samples he uses have been reduced to a size too small for old geezers to read. These things notwithstanding, I still have to put this book in the "must read" category for the target audience.
WOW!! This book delivers with a BANG! .......2006-08-31
I came across this book quite by accident and what attracted me besides the GREAT title was.....the GREAT title...! I mean, who doesn't want to learn ways on how to make more money---even Donald Trump is always on the hunt. I picked up the book and could not stop reading it. It had me at 'hello' and I learned exactly what I needed to do to become very successful as a writer.
And mind you, not just living paycheck by paycheck but it teaches you and gives you PERMISSION on HOW to live WELL. And don't you desserve to be happy and not have an ulcer worrying about money? I hear ulcers are quite painful. It has been a long time since I read a book that gave me the step-by-step guide on how to make a REAL living in writing and not feel GUILT about being PAID for sharing information in print with others that make their lives BETTER. There is nothing sexy about being BROKE as I am sure every broke-back (umm, is that even a word?!..lol!) person will attest to. And both my hands are waaaay up in the air as having seen those days. Good-byyye empty wallet and "daddy may I have 2 dollars!" Okay...where was I?...Ahh, yes... Chapters 11 and 17 alone is worth getting this book. It discusses how to give a powerful presentation, how to make money writing speeches for others, and markets that are WIDE open just waiting to be filled; markets that are quite lucrative and will put more buckets of broccoli and grade A beef wellington dinners on your table than you can eat--even for those of you out there who are gluttonous by nature. YAAAAAA! Sorry, I just couldn't resist. :) I wholeheatedly recommend this book for how GENEROUS the author is in the sharing of information, in the clear steps he gives on how to succeed in the business of writing, and the way he OVER-DELIVERS.
You just don't find this so readily these days as so many blockbuster authors do not seem to care about truly helping the average joe, such as myself, but are far more interested in how THEY themselves can profit off the little guy----me. This author is quite the opposite. He cares about his readers; this is quite evident between the pages and he genuinely wants his readers' lives to be enriched in every way imagineable in the direction of their dreams, that is. Get this book TODAY if you are tired of working a job you hate and barely making ends meet and have always wondered if you can make a money-spilleth-over career out of writing----yes, YOU CAN. I'm on my way...!
The Wealthy Writer.......2006-08-06
I didn't think this book was that great. I am interested in starting an on-line writing business and this is the only book I've bought and read so far --based on these glowing reviews. It did cover many common-sense aspects of writing and working for yourself --but I was disappointed in what it didn't cover: the legal requirements for running your own business and taxes. There was a single line on being a Sole Proprieter. No mention of taxes. No information on websites beyond stating that it would require too much information to cover here and would justify a book in itself. The book focused almost entirely on the author's preferred niche market, writing for companies. Overall I found this book disappointing and dated. If this is the cream of the crop, I shudder to think what the other writing-for-money books are like. This is definitely not a reference book that you will return to again and again.
A practical handbook.......2006-02-21
The Wealthy Writer is an excellent resource for both established freelance writers and those just entering the field. Its strengths are its practical nature. While many such books are written from an academic standpoint, The Wealthy Writer is entirely practical and simple to read. Its other strength is that it covers many different areas of freelance writing and shows readers how they can specialise in different areas. This is valuable for those wanting to know what focus they can take, while it also offers established writers new avenues.

Book Description
An instant classic on America's catastrophicand indefiniteoccupation of Iraq.
"Ah, the freedom. Look, we have the gas-line freedom, the looting freedom, the killing freedom, the rape freedom, the hash-smoking freedom. I don't know what to do with all this freedom."Akeel, a twenty-six-year-old Baghdad resident, on life in the new Iraq
Consistently compared with the work of Hunter S. Thompson and Michael Herr, The Freedom provides a fearless and unsanitized tour of the disastrous occupation of Iraq, in all its surreal and terrifying detail. Drawing on the best tradition of war reporting, here is a rare book that "embeds" with both sidesthe U.S. military and the Iraqi resistance.
Acclaimed journalist Christian Parenti takes us on a high-speed ride along treacherous roads to the centers of the ongoing conflict in Fallujah, Ramadi, and Sadr City through the first year of the occupation. He introduces us to relatives waiting anxiously outside the holding fortress of Abu Ghraib and takes a night drive around Baghdad with the insurgents. He recounts the military's use of drugs and prostitutes, the imperial buffoonery of the Green Zone, and the religious ecstasy of the Shiites. And he allows us to witness, close-up and in riveting detail, the cataclysmic violence, rampant gangsterism, and quotidian heroism that is today's Iraq.
As predicted by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, when "historians of tomorrow start writing, they will doubtless have copies of The Freedom close at hand."
Customer Reviews:
Quality writing from a quality writer.......2006-08-09
This is the first book I've ever read by Christian Parenti.
It says on the back of my edition from the Las Vegas Mercury
'[Parenti] has an eye for the pefect image, a wonderful ear for dialogue, and a prose style that floats across the page'
This is superbly apposite. Christian Parenti does have a really arresting, muscular, lithe and subtle way with words.
He zooms onto an intensely personal detail in one paragraph and then zooms out into the much larger picture in the next. He does this beautifully though.
This writing seems like it could have dictated in a stream of consciousness, but my guess is that Parenti is a heavy self-editor. I don't think anyone in a rush will write
"It is as if the very landscape of America has been flooded with an odorless, anesthetic gas that prohibits analysis."
or
"Considering all these dynamics, it seems that failure is, in fact, America's only option. And when the full history of this bloody circus is written, people will look back slack-jawed at the scale and brazenness of the occupation's corruption and incompetence. History will record Haliburton's colossal greed; The Bush administration's reckless ideological delusions; Paul Bremer's capricious mismanagement; the venality and duplicity of Chalhabi, Allawi and the other disobedient, incompetent puppets. And this criminal farce will be visually linked to images of bombed mosques in Falluja, the burning Baghdad library with idle US troops watching, sexual torture and humiliation in Abu Ghraib, and the swollen skulls of children sick from radiation poisoning."
I will be definitely reading everything else he has written.
I meant to give it 5 stars, I don't know why I've only ended up with 4.
Perspective from The Freedom.......2006-05-29
This is an excellent read providing perspective from important and fresh angles. I found it incredibly well written prose with a great ear for dialogue and an honesty that comes through in each encounter with his subjects whether they are U.S. soldiers, Iraqi mothers or men engaged in the Iraqi resistence.
This book dimensionalizes the conflict so when I get the steady diet of network news I have a better sense of what is going on behind the headlines ( and the "paid for" positive media that the DOD is polluting the airwaves with); on the streets of cities and in the American encampments across Iraq.
Regardless of whether you supported this war from the outset -- your view of conflict will be more informed by this read.
Is this REALLY the truth?.......2006-01-06
Can you contain all that is Iraq in 211 little pages? No? Then you must leave something out. What did Parenti leave out?
It's clear what he left in: An interview with a leader of the Communist Party in Iraq, another interview with insurgent cell leaders, and several interviews with friends both Iraqi and American who vehemently disagree with some aspect of the war. Are we to expect these anti-war and anti-American (not the same) interviewees possess the entire Iraq experience?
That's all there is to Iraq?
The war dissenters in the book are described in detail, with heart and in a sympathetic style. The war advocates are patriotic, mono-syllabic dullards.
Is this accurate? Complete? Why not strike up a friendship with a "John Wayne," flag waving, all-American soldier and interview him in more than just a token fashion? There are plenty out there. Could it be that such a warrior has nothing in common with Parenti? There is something more here that CP is not telling the reader. Furthermore, he never claims to be writing an article. This is pure editorial. He even mentions the fact that his opinions have colored his writing in this book. Oh, he says it's the truth alright. It's the "truth" plus his opinion.
Let us not expect the plain and simple facts from a book like this. "The Freedom" is one man's opinion. Read it if you don't agree with the war. You'll find solace in a journalist's editorial writing who shares your opinion.
DON'T read it if you are searching for the truth about Iraq. You'll find opinion.
I gave it 5 stars because I got what I was looking for--a journalist's take on Iraq. I entered into it not expecting even handed reportage. I wanted to know what one person has to say on the war who's opinion is radically different from my own and who can effectively write.
Parenti expressed his opinion and gave me insight into one reporter's mind: Report the tragic. Report the struggle. Report the conflict. This is grist for the mill. Give the readers a story--a cliff hanger. Report the truth only when it supports the story.
One more note of caution. Remember: he is a reporter not a soldier. He is a writer, not a State Department nation builder, strategist, tactician, politician or warrior. He is an expert. . .on WRITING, not international affairs. If you keep that in mind you'll better see through to the truth.
Come on. You don't think Parenti is the last word on Iraq, do you?
Insightful First Hand Account of a Farce.......2005-11-21
Christian Parenti has been to Iraq 3 times. He gives a stark political overview backed with first hand knowledge. I must say his writing style is superb and me manages a sense of humor throughout. The war has been fought for obscene millitary contracts to the Bechtels and Halliburtons of the world. Also, for oil control. Interestingly, he posits that it is not for our use but to inhibit future powers such as China and India from controlling oil. If we control the areas where they purchase their oil, we can engage in diplomatic blackmail.
Parenti also outlines the plight of women in Iraq as they are subjected to "misery gangs" who rape and beat them, leaving them on the side of the roads. Many of these women are then killed by their relatives to preserve their honor.
He sits in on dubious press conferences in which millitary spokesman sidestep every question. He rides with the grunts and talks to the freedom fighters. On a few occasions, he is in the right place at the right time, witnessing an IED that takes out a convoy and a marine. This book really leaves you feeling horribly sorry for everyone involved, except for the contractors. This is gonzo journalism at its finest.
The Truth.......2005-10-22
What Parenti offers here is an articulate account of cause and effect. Mainstream media organizations adroitly postulate intellectualized accounts of cause, but fail miserably to explore, analyze and depict effect. This is the void that Parenti fills with his simmering account of the travails involved simply in surviving in Iraq. He reports the front line experiences of soldiers, `insurgents', citizens, NGOs and journalists; those unfortunates who make up the episode of madness that is the Iraq war.
Parenti avoids the pitfall of painting himself into the Bush-bashing corner. His is not an overtly political polemic (although he cannot on occasion resist the temptation to thrust his knife between the ribs of the corpulent political leadership gorging at the trough of the Iraq war), but is instead an honest account of what the decisions made a world away mean to the people left to live out these megalomaniacal fantasies.
The Freedom is cinematic in its expression; Parenti captures the palpitations of fear, the stench of total societal destruction and the grinding heat of the desert, and he serves up a cast of desperate, angry, terrified and bewildered characters. Parenti's vivid prose unquestionably entertains, but the success of The Freedom is in relating the thrilling but morbid account of what passes for life in Iraq to the audacious claims of `progress' made by Bush and his puppet-masters. Piety, greed and hubris are the cause, Parenti offers us the effect. The meaningless rhetoric of the grand architects who sweep their hands over maps of Arabia is translated into the taut prose of survival. Parenti is courageous, honest, rational and talented and this book should be read by all who value those qualities.
