A complete guide to trading with price, volume, and float
Float Analysis explains how to use the Woods Cumulative Volume Float Indicator, the landmark concept in technical analysis that teaches the reader how to accurately determine when to purchase stocks. This groundbreaking book also contains all-new insights on how to understand and profit from these indicators, how support and resistance are redefined by this innovation, and how to implement these strategies into a high-growth portfolio.
Steve Woods (Hyattsville, MD) is the Executive Director of FloatAnalysis.com and has written a number of articles for various journals including Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities.
New technology and the advent of around the clock trading have opened the floodgates to both foreign and domestic markets. Traders need the wisdom of industry veterans and the vision of innovators in today's volatile financial marketplace. The Wiley Trading series features books by traders who have survived the market's ever changing temperament and have prospered-some by reinventing systems, others by getting back to basics. Whether a novice trader, professional or somewhere in-between, these books will provide the advice and strategies needed to prosper today and well into the future.

Interesting concept - Overpriced book.......2006-07-28
The author claims that he has discovered the missing element that complements price and volume and it is the float (or, the status of it). When the cumulative daily volume in a given time period adds up to the float (the number of publicly available and traded shares), you get a Float Turnover; good or bad things may happen at this point. Three cumulative technical markers are introduced here: Volume-Float Indicator, Volume Percentage Indicator and Volume Channel Indicator (this last looks like Bollinger Bands). These concepts and markers are all well explaned and demonstrated. The book has plenty of figures, even "A Compendium of Float Analysis Formations".
The book is clearly written, enthusiastic, even modest considering the confidence the author has in his findings. He wastes no time detailing the core discovery and the ten "sub-discoveries" that stem from it. He does not state that the method is fool-proof, but emphasizes its place in technical analysis. Fair enough. One may argue that the backward calculation that marks a period of Float Turnover is, well, backward. That is, how do you know where to start adding together the daily volume - backward? It is also hard to see the success of the method in today's quite volatile market environment. May work well for nice, smooth, trending periods, but boy, haven't you "gapped down" lately? I disagree with the criticism below that the introduction of Multiple Float Turnovers would be an oxymoron. These formations are emphasized only in the context of base building, nothing is wrong with that.
My only problem is that the book seems too pricey, considering that it is an expansion of a published article. I respect the author that he avoided unnecessary repetitions to bloat the number of pages, but one star is still down for the price, sorry...
Buy and Sell when price is above or below the float turnover.......2003-04-16
Shares traded to the public are referred to as the "Float". The float is a constantly changing measurement.
The amount of time it takes for the cumulative volume total to equal the float is the unit of measurement referred to as the "Float Turnover". So intuitively the Float Turnover represents a span of time required to change all ownership in the float. Every stock behaves differently. Some stocks have a float turn over in a couple of days, whereas, it takes years for others.
The author states, At the Top, "Right at the top all the shares are bought by unsuspecting foolish investors who don't realize the stock is over-priced and they get stuck at the top" and at the bottom, "The really smart people are buying all the shares and the price goes up because they are holding them tightly."
As price rise and fall, the constantly changing ownership moves from one price level to another.
Float turnover formations will be found at the exact location that marks a long term bottom or top.
When the stock is being supported it will tend to be at the top of the float turnover price range
When the stock is dropping without support, the price will tend to be at the bottom of the float turnover price range with the float acting as overhead supply.
The timely sell signal occurs where the price drops below the float turnover at the top where the price crosses the bottom channel line for the first time on the chart. A buy occurs when price breaks above the current float turnover price range.
Interesting but don't expect code.......2003-02-23
After reading the book, I have mixed feelings; this may be a brilliant new concept or a mathematical gimmick. What I can say is that this book comes with no software code. That costs considerable more. If you use Tradestation and can't code the concepts from the book yourself, your next book should be Professional Stock Trading by Mark Conway and Aaron Behle. They have a chapter on Float Trading with their adaptation of the Float Box, Float Channel, and Float Percentage. Also included is a trading system based on these concepts.
Give it up for the pros........2003-01-02
With fairness in mind, I must say that this book is both informing and yet another money-trap for you.
First of all; this writing is good because it takes a subject (A Stocks Float) and explains its` important role, and gives the reader a little more education on buying and selling power in the markets.
For all this, the book is great. However! Don't be fooled into thinking you are getting a tool or anything you can use in your market analysis. If you are a MetaStock language programmer or in some other high end platform of securities analysis, you can build your own indicator with the scant information given in the book.
Or you can shuck out about ... bucks and get a ready made indicator system that will make all your dreams come true.
If you are not a language programmer, or don't want to spend another five hundred on top of the WhOOPing ... bucks for a small under-written book, you better leave it on the shelf. You are better off just getting on-line and type in (Stocks Float) or the like and you can get a better education for a lot less money.
I have the book on my shelf. It collects dust. Save you money for a better education else ware.
ANOTHER SCAM.......2002-07-20
The theme of the book is SCAM, and the book is full of CONS
Let me show you why I said so:
The author claims at any given turn, there is always one float turn over, and if the stock has not turned over yet after one float, he refers to multiple floats. This is the biggest con.
Pick a number from the air. Use that as the float of the stock and chart it the way the author says it. You will have the same result at every turn of the stocks, ofcourse, depending on which number you pick, your float turn over could happen before or after his float turn over.
You see, if you add enough day volume, you will sooner or later get to the float number you pick. When it happens at the time when the stock turns, you call it one float turn over. And if the stock price has not turned yet, and you keep adding to it eventually you will have another float turn over. When this process is repeated over time, guess what, the stock will turn direction while the number you pick has turned multiple times. The author calls it multiple float turnover. What a SCAM.
I bought the book because I need to get more indicators for my software but I did not realize that there are many people got bought into it and gave it a positive review. As a software developer, I had to buy the book to see if this is really another valid indicator, and I was so disappointed that even the professional like Martin Pring got bought into it (Not sure if Mr. Pring realized this)
There are several places where you could spot the scam. First, what I have shown you above. Second, to get more people interested, the author uses the names of professionals such as William O'Neil and Gann. You see, if you study and follow those professionals, you will be far ahead with your own experience. And by telling the readers to study other professionals, the author gets the free ride on one of the most useless tool. O'Neil and Gann probably would not mind have their names mentioned because that is free publicity. But Pring! I am so disappointed.
He claimed he turned a few thousands to ten fold from Sep 98 to Jan 2000. Well, like Wall Street used to say: even a monkey can pick a stock in a bull market. What happened to the author after Jan 2000 while the book is copyrighted in 2002? Too busy to write the book conveniently in that 2 years and not trading for another 10 folds? Are you ... me?
If you have not bought the book, ask someone about the theory and check it out first before you buy. If you already have the book and think it is valid, please let me know. If I am wrong, I would like to know.

A valuable guide to becoming whole for the businessperson.......2006-12-07
Well, those Publishers Weekly do write a hard review! I quite like this book and Hilarie Owen's other works. Frankly, the people I've seen at senior levels of most organisations I've could do with something like this, and often do require a substantial dumbing down of concepts before they can get them... in terms of interpersonal dynamics many at senior levels have almost zero self awareness and even less self knowledge... perhaps that's a bit hard, although I say, just take a look at what's going on in the world of business today... organisations and leaders are run by the shadows, narcissism in the extreme, lip service is paid to concepts like sustainabilty because it seen to be necessary to maintain a good PR, and in the meantime wanton destruction of our planet in the name of making more and more money... paper... (or plastic, depending on where you live!).
The book is about becoming a whole person and is written from Owen's extensive practical experience as a leading change management consultant in the UK. Her influences are wide and that's reflected in this book (Psychology, systems theory, Jung, spirituality, creativity studies).
The book is divided into parts - 'knowledge capital', 'social capital', 'emotional capital' and becoming whole according to Owen is fusing these elements. It recognises that each person is unique and has different needs and growth involves a very individual learning journey, which is about doing your best, not becoming perfect. There are excerises on values, beliefs, intuition, creativity, relationships, emotions... If you've done some personal development, you will be familiar with the areas and probably many of the exercises, although one can always learn something new! If you haven't then you'll get a real good introduction to and sampling of the many areas that make up self-knowledge
Business typically only acknowledges knowledge capital (the mind) and everything else can be reduced with the use of the mind (witness the major mental job that has been done on emotions through the idea of EQ and all of the worksheets, tests, checklists, and other mental concepts that reduce emotions to a place most people in business can feel comfortable with them, that is, separate from them!).
The book would be good also for a coach as there are several useful exercises, quizes and tools you could add to your toolkit. There's a useful Learning Styles Questionnaire contained in the back.
I strongly recommend checking out the authors other books, starting with In Search of Leaders.
Recommended reading for managers. Let me rephrase that, it's more workbook as such, for self awareness and change... and it's actually not worth only reading it as you won't get much value out of it unless you do the excercises.

Book Description
An investigation of the rise of a molecular culture in biomedicine, Molecularising Biology and Medicine shows that biomedical practices and strategies centered on molecules were instrumental in the forging of new alliances between the biomedical laboratory, the clinic, industry, and funding organizations from the 1930s onwards.
The contributors present a coherent set of case studies of practices, technologies and strategies aimed at the isolation, investigation, manipulation, production, and uses of molecules including vitamins, hormones, blood products, antibiotics, and vaccines. These case studies examine how processes of molecularisation were set in motion in the interwar period, how they were used as a resource in the biomedical 'mobilisation' of World War II, and how new alliances and strategies created as part of the war effort played a central role in the reorganisation of biomedicine in the postwar period.

the most ruest Korean girl at Peabody.......2006-10-04
Throw away the book buyback guides! Finally there is a tell-it-all midge book that you will treasure forever. I stumbled across this book as I was perusing the aisles at my local bookstow and knew immediately that I had to have it. Aside from the blatantly Jacobsonian title, this book is your definitive guide to Midge.
Midge assistance and special orders was always something I left to my coworkers. Midge can be very confusing and frustrating. Seeing the many faces of Midge, the runess birthed from the dark underbelly of that infamous Baltimore music conservatory, had left me intrigued. Now having read this book, and having looked closely at the Midge under magnification, I am beginning to see the light from dark. Of course, one can not be expected to explain why none the currently available editions of the Brandenburg Concertos are suitable. That kind of psychological dissection could take years to explain, so I do not fault the authors for this shortcoming. This book is TOP SHELF!
The midge, tied and true.......2002-11-20
Mr. Holbrook has done a very fine job of covering how to tie midge pupa, larva, spinners and (a few) winged adults down to size 32 hooks.
This book shares space on my tying shelf beside Darrel Martin's Micropatterns (it adds nicely to Martin's fine work), Leeson & Schollmeyer's Fly Tier's Benchside Reference, Oliver Edwards' Flytyers Masterclass (the English use flytyer where the US uses fly tier), Hughes' Trout Flies and Mariano's In the Ring of the Rise.
I rank it with these other fine books because it belongs there. If you have an interest in tying midge patterns and want to learn how Mr. Holbrook came to his patterns, this book reveals all. If you want to tailor your midge patterns to your local Dipterans, you can find out how to do that as well.
This is not a book on taxonomy and it is not intended to be (and a guide to Dipterans is WAY beyond all but the Ph.D. taxonomists ..the Dipterists and Dipteran Journals are turning to genome studies over the morphological classification - do a search on Dipterists for more information).
The collection, observation and macrophotography guides are excellent for beginner to advanced collectors.
This is a must have book! Ed Koch is partially responsible for the author's addiction: good on you, Ed!
More Patterns Than Tactics.......2002-08-26
As long as the reader understands that this book doesn't cover a lot of tactics, it's a highly useful guide. The focus is on patterns--how to get the colors right, how to tie them, and what they imitate.
There's not much on casting technique or how to actually use them on the stream, but the material that is there is great. It has really useful patterns that are surprisingly easy to tie.
It will open your eyes to tying great midge patterns.......2002-01-15
Midge fishing and tying midge patterns was always something I left to somebody else - very intimidating. Where do you start and what do you fish and why? Talking to Ed and Don at fly fishing shows, listening to what they have to say, seeing the vials of midges that Don had pumped from the stomachs of trout, looking closely at the midges under magnification, and reading this book brings it all together. The patterns are real. They are easy to tie. The materials are cheap. When you read this book, sit back and take it all in you realize that most of the mystery is gone. It gives you the tools with which to master this art. You gain an appreciation for the patterns and why they work. This is not a pretty fly book. This is a real working fishermans reference. You have the results of 20 plus years of two masters trials and errors of fishing midges. A must have for a fly fisherman.
Midge Matching.......2001-12-27
This book is essentially a pattern book. Little if any information is given about actually fishing midge patterns. In fact, the author spends a great deal of time telling you that he doesn't know much about the process anyway.
The real point of the book is that fishing midges requires exact matching of midge patterns to current stream conditions. That is, sample the midge larva in the stream (little attention is payed to dry patterns), examine them microscopically, and tie up a matching fly using the included patterns. Little, if any, entomoligical data is given in the book.
The patterns are interesting, though, and the many photos of midges quite good (photography is hobby of the author and an entire chapter is devoted to taking photos of these creatures) although, again, with no entomological data on what is being photographed. Don't look to this book for many tips or "magic" solutions that will help you catch fish.

Like the first edition, LANGUAGE IN THOUGHT AND ACTION uses poignant and relevant examples to better explain the subtleties and nuiances of language.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2007-08-15
I am a prospective linguistics major, and earlier this summer I went to the bookstore to pick up a good book about language in order to have a little background before starting classes in the fall. I bought this book out of the four or five language-subject books there (perhaps because it was shorter and seemed to be written in a more friendly tone). I am so glad I chose this one.
S.I. Hayakawa does a terrific job of keeping the reader focused and interested. Whenever he makes a theoretical point, he is sure to provide at least one (and usually two or more) examples so that the reader can understand and relate the theory to real life--in effect, Kayakawa uses one of his own arguments in his book, and it works tremendously.
If you have any interest in language, especially about the more social aspects of it, such as its purpose in groups, connotations, and the necessity to take great care in choosing the words we speak, pick up this book. If you're busy, then just read one section (5-8 pages) a night. Hayakawa's commentary on the philosophy of language is outstanding, and Language in Thought and Action will make you appreciate the finest aspects of language and will urge you to use language in the most effective way possible.
Potentially life-altering.......2007-01-27
Lift the veil of word-hypnosis. Open your mind to understand how words really describe, distort and motivate for better and for worse. This book will challenge your view of the world, of communication, of people, prejudices and perception. HIGHLY recommended.
If This Book Were a Manadatory School Text..........2006-11-26
The "debates" wouldn't continue to be evasive exercises in meaningless rhetoric.
People would distinguish sound bites from actual information.
People would lose interest in non-issues like flag burning.
People would take control of the objects and symbols that now control them.
In short, nobody could give a reasonable excuse to pay attention to FOX News anymore, we'd demand more of our so-called "leaders", and the world would probably be much the better for it.
Read this book -- It helps to open one's mind!.......2005-12-30
S. I. Hayakawa's "Language in Thought and Action" is an excellent read. There isn't much that I can add to what has already been said by other reviewers. In terms of writing and speaking, this book will help me to remain cognizant about the words I use, their meanings, and their contexts. As a reader of books, articles, ads, etc., as well as one who "listens" to what others are saying, this book will help me to recognize that I must discern the "messages" I am receiving, in terms of their intended meaning by the writer and/or the speaker. While the book is very profound and thought-provoking, Hayakawa's style is not erudite -- that is, he does not talk "down" to the reader. I intend to re-read this book many times, in order to glean more of Hayakawa's important message. What remains is to try and get more people to read this excellent work, including relatives, friends, those in government, scientists and engineers, academics, media types, and those in the entertainment industry. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would do so without hesitation.
A great foundational book for anyone who wants to think more clearly.......2005-10-01
I read the second edition of this great work 35 years ago and it became the center of my educational process. Now when someone uses growl words, or refuses to lower the level of generality or brands a person by associating them with a label, I mentally repeat these basic principles of thought and civilization: The Word is not the Thing. Truth is found by getting to the lowest level of generality and examining things with care, not by inflaming people with symbols and putting people in boxes. This book is not only needed by students, but to help all of us deal with those politicans, marketing strategists and commentators who make their living by getting us to think in terms of shallow, implusive reactions. We live in a world of thought manipulation. Semantics can help you filter out the noise and learn how to think.
Dee doo dah dah dee do dah dah is all I want to say to you (when you twist words to manipulate me.... )
Book Description
Twenty years after his death, George Balanchine still dominates the world of ballet. Not only have his works been danced by the New York City Ballet continuously since 1948, but they also have been performed by more than two dozen other companies throughout the world. In clear and elegant writing, Terry Teachout brings to life the dramatic story of George Balanchine, a Russian émigré who fell in love with American culture, married four times and kept a mistress on the side, and transformed the art of ballet forever.
Customer Reviews:
"The Most Extraordinary Encounters and Events".......2005-03-05
Teachout's short biography of Balanchine has a lot more meat in it than I expected, considering that he makes a comment in the Preface that he wrote it for the casual ballet-goer or even someone who has never been to the ballet. He takes a casual but observant stroll through Balanchine's professional and personal lives and with telling incident and anecdote makes this giant of twentieth-century art come alive, warts and all. Further, his tone is one of kindliness and understanding, even when it comes to Balanchine's inveterate womanizing, without it becoming a work of hagiography. And he conveys in words how Balanchine filled his plotless ballets with "the most extraordinary encounters and events" and changed the face of modern ballet.
I came to this book not as a balletomane but as a lover of the music of Stravinsky whose music, of course, was the aural life blood of Balanchine's art. I was not disappointed in that there were many glimpses of Stravinsky along the way. But more important Teachout's easy style and consummate story-telling ability made this a compulsive read. Many biographers lack that quality.
Frankly I would recommend this book not only to the dance neophyte like me, but to any lover of ballet, or modern dance, or of twentieth century music. It certainly provides a beautifully written record of one of the high points of American culture of its era.
Scott Morrison
Combines Biography with Dance Criticism.......2004-11-30
I will make the inevitable comparison between this book and Robert Gottlieb's short biography of Balanchine. This book is my choice because Gottlieb's book, while businesslike, is a bit earthbound. Gottlieb's biography did not exude the spirit of dance for me. And the biographical facts, reported in brief by both Gottlieb and Teachout, have been given more scope in Bernard Taper's wonderful full length biography. In Teachout's favor, he is a dance critic, and he treats the dances themselves with more insight and depth. As a reader, I feel this added to the book's value. So the book I'll keep on my shelf is Terry Teachout's Balanchine.
