Book Description
Foundations of Inventory Management presents a complete treatment of inventory theory and models for use in advanced undergraduate, masters, or PhD courses in Operations research, manufacturing management or Operations management. Coverage is organized into an introductory section, followed by a section focused on predictable supply and demand, and the third section covering stochastic inventory models. Many recent developments related to or impacting inventory such as ERP systems, supply chain management, JIT, and ERP systems are integrated within the text.
The text presents inventory as a critical topic for virtually all businesses today and one in which theory and practice are closely linked.
Prequisite coursework for students of this text would include basic optimization theory, stochastic processes, and dynamic programming. The text includes examples as well as rigorous assignment problem sets.

Advance Inventory Modeling.......2007-01-12
This book is hardly on Foundations of Inventory. I would call it instead: "Advance Inventory Modeling". Nevertheless, if you are a graduate IE/OR student, this book is a gold mine regarding inventory modeling. If you are a practitioner looking for an intermediate book on inventory modeling, this book is one book ahead the one you are looking for. The author makes it clear about the type of reader his book was intended. I gave a 5 to this book, although it's showing 4 stars(I can't understand why).
Outstanding Book for mid-level and advanced audience.......2002-10-31
This is perhaps the most comprehensive and complete book on the theory behind the innumerable inventory models. More interestingly, it is an extremely well written for a technical book and the lucid style makes readin interesting. I am using the book as reference for research and this book provides a good b/g and development of different models: both stochastic and deterministic.
However, due to the mathematically moderate to advanced treatment of the subject (calculus, probability and some linear algebra and stochastic processes would really help), the audience for this book is definitely those with some background in math and/or engineering.
This book is not for those looking for a formula to plug in values (although it does give those too), it is for those who are keen on understanding the underlying 'logic' of inventory policies and systems and how they have been developed. Anyone in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Management (with quantitative inclinations) and professionals will find this an extremely good book.
The Bible of inventory management.......2000-03-17
This is a great reference book for Operations Research and Management Science professionals. Covers most of the classical inventory theory models. Highly recommended.
Book Description
In 1958, Stanford University Press published Studies in the Mathematical Theory of Inventory and Production (edited by Kenneth J. Arrow, Samuel Karlin, and Herbert Scarf), which became the pioneering road map for the next forty years of research in this area. One of the outgrowths of this research was development of the field of supply-chain management, which deals with the ways organizations can achieve competitive advantage by coordinating the activities involved in creating products—including designing, procuring, transforming, moving, storing, selling, providing after-sales service, and recycling. Following in this tradition, Foundations of Stochastic Inventory Theory has a dual purpose, serving as an advanced textbook designed to prepare doctoral students to do research on the mathematical foundations of inventory theory and as a reference work for those already engaged in such research.
The author begins by presenting two basic inventory models: the economic order quantity model, which deals with “cycle stocks,” and the newsvendor model, which deals with “safety stocks.” He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).
All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Review of the Stochastic Inventory Theory.......2007-02-13
This book provides a good path to learn the theory of stochastic inventory control. The first few chapters and the appedices are pretty useful.
Stochastic Inventory Mathematical Formulations.......2007-01-12
This book is not suitable for practitioner looking for methodologies on how to solve real-world stochastic inventory problems. However, it is suitable for someone interest on mathematical formulations, research...etc.; perhaps a graduate IE/OR student working on inventory models.
A great overview of stocahstic inventory theory........2004-09-12
Begining from early day in 1950, the Inventory theory is mathematically rich and widely applicable field of Operations Research. This books provides an excellent overview of the development in this direction so far. It teaches many very important concept without getting tedious in technical details. This also serves as a very good text for students interested in learning dynamic programming and structured policies. This book falls short of (my) expectations as its approach in describing the problem solving is very legality oriented. In other words, though this informs a reader why certain things are true by presenting mathematical proofs, it doesn't tell how do one arrives at the proof. However there are very few books which really do that.

Book Description
London shows how principled leadership and business diplomacy enhance employee and customer loyalty and commitment, essential to the survival of any organization in today's competitive, global economy. But, can this really be achieved? London defines principled leadership as the art of applying ethical business values, and business diplomacy as the means to do it. By using these techniques, executives and managers can implement change and gain commitment to their initiatives from inside and outside their organizations. Well illustrated with case studies and exercises, this book is essential for HR executives, management and organizational development specialists, and consultants throughout the public and private sectors. London describes how principled, diplomatic leaders and managers put personal feelings aside, avoid anger, and by doing so are highly successful in resolving conflicts. He identifies and explains different styles of diplomacy, such as the trial balloon, shuttle diplomacy, coalitions, and co-optation, and shows how principled, diplomatic behaviors result when people really listen to each other--and by doing so, develop their own values as a foundation for decision making, conflict resolution, and negotiation. The result is a clear demonstration of how human resource managers, trainers, and organizational development consultants can create a truly productive work environment in their own organizations, and how principled leadership and business diplomacy will benefit them as well their relationships with others.

Book Description
William E. Doolittle challenges established theories about native agriculture in North America, and puts forward new and innovative ideas. Looking at the evidence from a geographical standpoint, he focuses on fields, field features, and field systems. Emphasis is placed on modifications to the biophysical environment, specifically vegetation, soil, slope, and hydrology. There is a thorough exploration of horticulture, the methods used to maximise the advantages of adequate rainfall, and the techniques developed to compensate for deficits and surpluses in the supply of water. William E. Doolittle uses three types of data: reports on native practices compiled by the early European explorers; ethnographies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which provide ecological information; and archaeological studies, to examine the antiquity and origins of various agricultural activities. The resulting unique and fascinating account of the complexities of native Amreican food production is extensively illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs. Native agriculture in the rest of the Americas is examined in Cultivated Landscapes of Native Amazonia and the Andes by William M. Denevan, and Cultivated Landscapes of Middle America on the Eve of Conquest by Thomas M. Whitmore and B. L. Turner II.

Few men know the golf courses of Scotland and Ireland better than Jim Finegan, and no man writes of them more movingly. On one level this is an indispensable guidebook; on another -- in the tradition of Bernard Darwin -- it is simply a great read. -- George Peper, Editor-in-Chief, Golf Magazine
Book Description
Every golfer dreams of making a pilgrimage to the British Isles, to play the exhilarating game to be found on the ground that links land and sea. Increasingly, golfers on this side of the Atlantic have discovered that some of the most magnificent courses in the world -- and some of the most beautiful countrysides -- are to be found in Scotland's near neighbor, Ireland.
For the tourist or the dreamer, there can be no better guide than James W. Finegan. A passionate advocate and a charming storyteller, Finegan combines a writer's eye, a historian's knowledge, and a golfer's sense of wonder to provide an impossibly ambitious grand tour of this beautiful land. In a loop that begins in the west at Lahinch and continues clockwise through both the Republic and Northern Ireland, Finegan covers nearly seventy courses, visiting those that have become true shrines of the game, the courses that are well known and respected, and the little-known gems you might otherwise pass right by.
Now updated with new courses and changes to old favorites, Emerald Fairways and Foam-Flecked Seas is a book to be read, savored, and tucked away in your suitcase when you finally undertake the journey of your dreams.

Slips off belt.......2007-06-28
Stopped wearing this item and replaced it with a different model from another company. It slipped off my belt too easily.
The Ultimate Guides for UK golf.......2007-01-06
James Finegan's three volumes guides to golf in Scotland, Ireland and England are literate and engrossing. I can't imagine a golfing trip to the UK or Ireland without these guides.
BUY THIS BOOK - BUY FINEGAN'S SCOTLAND, TOO.......2000-02-07
Golf in the Kingdom comes to life with real information.
My golfing buddy and I are in the planning stages of a trip to either Ireland or Scotland. If you appreciate humorous, passionate writing, then this is the book. You can feel the pace of play and exciting in his words. You can also feel his appreciation for the joy of the trip in his conversations with golf pro's, barkeeps, hotel owners.
After reading this joyful book, you'll be hooked on travelling just like he has, same courses, same restaurants and inns.
Makes a wonderful gift for golfers who fully appreciate the game of golf. Between this and the Scotland book, I think that I've given away seven copies.
a must have golfing guide of ireland.......1999-10-09
this book is a must. I am a PGA professional who recently spent six weeks in ireland. thankfully i brought along my copy of emerald fairways. it was just as valuable to me as my golf clubs. his insight on the golf courses are extremely accurate, but the most valuable information is on food and accomodations. It was amazing to have read the book and then experience everything exactly how it read. even the people he comes across and writes about, really exist and are still around interacting in the same manner as he writes. simply a must have for anyone who has even dreamt of going to Ireland. Scotland may be the home of golf, but Ireland is golf heaven. there is a reason so many golf pros (woods, janzen, duval, stewart, etc.) take trips there. Finegan does an amazing job that could not be topped by anyone, not even Christy O'Conner. Enjoy it, I know you will.
How could I go to play golf in Ireland without it!.......1999-02-05
As we plan our trip to Ireland Jim Finegan makes us realize that we need to spend more time there to enjoy more courses from the great ones to the unknown treasures . His epistle on Scotland does the same. My only real question is, Do I need a Michelin guide as well or shall we just enjoy the beauty and finesse of the Irish courses as he tells us to ?? A great manual for Irish Golf.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2007-08-01
I recently completed my studies in Medical Transcription. I knew I wanted to get a drug book eventually, but I wasn't sure which one I wanted to buy. I went to a MT seminar where there were donated medical books for sale at just a fraction of the price you would pay new. There were several different drug books there. After looking them over, I finally decided to purchase this one. This book is incredibly easy to use. One thing I really like about this book is that only proper drug names are capitalized. Generic or antiobiotic drug names are not. That is something that I found really frustrating with some of the online drug websites. All the drugs were capitalized. When I was doing my transcription practice, I would have to do an extra step. I would have to look it up on the prescription drug cite and then in my medical dictionary. I frequently found myself questioning whether or not a particular drug is supposed to be capitalized or not. This book has eliminated that problem. All the drugs are in alphabetical order and each listing also says what the drug is used for, the forms it comes it(pill, suspension liquid, IV etc) and also the dosage. I also like that the font is easy to read. It is also not overly small. I also like that the drug name is in bold. This makes it very easy to find. I know that some of the other drug book have much smaller print than this one.
As I said before, I have looked at several different drug books since starting my studies in Medical Transcription. In my opinion, the Saunders book is the best.
A Transcriptionists Best Friend.......2005-09-19
This book is GREAT for anyone who is in the medical field, but especially for medical transcriptionists. It is a very user friendly book, and the "sound alikes" at the end are great. I would recommend this book to anyone who works in the medical field as either a transcriptionist or nurse, etc. It will make your life much easier.
Great help.......2005-08-03
I am forever looking up pharmaceutical names- doctors do not always spell them correctly- so this is very helpful. It has dosages which are helpful also. I would recommend this book.
Big applause!.......2004-05-15
This book is crucial to the life of a medical transcriptionist. Updated annually, as the world of pharmaceuticals changes on an ongoing basis, Saunders has the king of drug word books. They cross-reference medications, list info for the generic and brand name drugs under each (e.g. "acetominophen" and "Tylenol" with same info) to minimize double-lookup, unlike the so-called "Quick Look Drug Book." Experimental drugs and discontinued products are listed together with the rest, so one does not have to access a separate appendix. Strengths of dosage (20 mg, 40 mg, etc.) are given, generics are not capitalized, etc., all critical info for an MT. Also included is a "sound-alike" list as well as "sound-alike" info within each individual entry, which often is very helpful. There are other similar publications out there and I've tried several, but Saunders is clearly the best IMO for the transcriptionist's needs.
